Missouri’s Sheldon Richardson apologizes to Mark Richt after Georgia’s win (UPDATED)

FIVE MORE THINGS

Wrapping up this past weekend and looking forward to this one.

The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a 41-20 win over Missouri in the SEC opener for both teams. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC as they head into Saturday’s game against visiting Florida Atlantic (1-1, 0-1 Sun Belt).

1. Last thing on “Old Man Football, Hopefully forever. I do want to give credit where credit is due. Sheldon Richardson, the Missouri defensive lineman who infamously coined that phrase for Georgia, came up to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt after the game to apologize. Pretty impressive considering how easy it could have been for him to just slink off to the Tigers’ locker room.

For what it’s worth, Richardson was not made available for interviews after the game and is not available today, as a Missouri beat writer tells. That’s why you haven’t seen him quoted anywhere. But Missouri coach Gary Pinkel addressed on Monday and said Richardson’s apololgy was “not orchestrated by us.”

“People make mistakes, you know, and get second chances,” Pinkel told reporters. “That’s all part of maturing. I think that’s a good statement on his part.”

Below is a video that shows the on-field celebration by the Bulldogs after the game. Obviously everybody was pretty pumped after the game. . . .

2. Georgia remained at No. 7 both in The Associated Press writer’s poll and the USA Today coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs, of course, started the season at No. 6 but dropped a spot in both polls after a ho-hum 45-23 win over Buffalo in the opener.

By the way, South Carolina moved up to No. 8 right behind Georgia after its 48-10 win over East Carolina and a really bad night for previous No. 8 Arkansas. The Gamecocks (2-0, 1-0 SEC) play host to UAB this Saturday, then get Missouri at Williams-Brice on Sept. 22. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare against the Tigers, who seemed like a pretty game club to me. Mizzou, by the way, plays host to Arizona State on Saturday.

3. As I mentioned, UGA has Florida Atlantic — or FAU, as they like to call themselves — coming into Athens this weekend. The Owls are members of the same Sun Belt Conference as Louisiana-Monroe, which pulled off a shocking upset of eight-ranked Arkansas 34-31 in overtime. Certainly that victory has made believers out of everybody in the Sun Belt and will give the Bulldogs’ coaches plenty of fodder for team motivation. But from what I’ve seen I don’t think FAU is quite on par with their conference brethren.

The Owls this past weekend lost this 31-17 to Middle Tennessee State. Apparently ball security is an issue for them. They’ve had six fumbles in two games, including four in the 7-6 win over Wagner. Meanwhile, La-Monroe continues its tour of the SEC. Next stop: Auburn on Saturday.

4. Kind of lost in the late-game heroics displayed by Jarvis Jones in Georgia’s win over Missouri on Saturday was the spectacular play of split end Marlon Brown. the big senior from Memphis had a career-best 8 catches for 106 yards and caught two big TD passes for the Bulldogs. He was asked afterward if he thought it was a “break-out game” for him.

“Yes, definitely, sure,” he said. “It feels pretty good but there’s always room for improvement. I’m going to go back and watch film and see what I can improve on and try to get better every week.”

That’s typical of Brown. He’s an incredibly humble kid who has had to overcome a lot of injuries — not to mention high expectations — since he’s been at Georgia. He was more excited to talk about how the Bulldogs finished Saturday’s game. They scored 24 unanswered points to put it away.

“We came in at halftime and heard a great speech from Coach Richt,” Brown said. “He said the last two ballgames we didn’t finish the drill. After that, we were like, ‘Man, he’s right. Let’s finish the drill like Coach Richt said.’ And we did.”

5. Other news items from Monday, Georgia’s Sept. 22 home date against Vanderbilt got picked up by ESPN2 for a 7:45 p.m. broadcast, Jones was named Walter Camp national and SEC defensive player of the week. And don’t forget “Russ” gets his official sworn in as Uga IX on Saturday.

The cynical side of me says that Richardson didn’t want to have to hear about “old man football” everytime they encounter a team from the SEC this year, but I am going to err on the side thatCT did and applaud the young man for swallowing some pride and approaching CMR like a man after the game. I say let it go now.

I’m not sure why the Georgia fans were chanting ‘Old man football’. They had to go to spread to move the ball against the Tigers. Sheldon Richardson did a decent job blocking up the holes against that I-formation.

Don’t care why he did it — even if someone else made him, it took a lot of guts and maturity for Sheldon Richardson to walk up to CMR, offer his hand and express regret over his comments. All the credit in the world to him.

Some kid who is probably 18-21 years old makes a flippant comment, and the adults in the press just pound it into the ground. If you had forgotten it before the game, the ESPN broadcast crew reminded us several times.

The press loves to create drama where there really isn’t any. Anyone who has played football knows that once the game gets underway, players think about their assignments and responsibilities on each play, not what some guy on the other team said earlier in the week. I’m as big a UGA backer as anyone, but even I started to feel sorry for the kid. Kudos to Chip Towers for a positive report on this (non) incident.

Whatever we run, I think we do better spreading the field instead of a power I. We do not have a strong enough line at present to just line up and go straight at someone. Spread it out and turn Gurley and Marshall loose, and I think we will see better results. And, if given enough time in the pocket, Murray can pick a defense apart with the receiving corps that we have. Whatever or whoever caused it,Richardson showed some class in approaching CMR after the game.Good for him, and good for Marlon Brown to finally have a breakout game! I would like to see more of Jay Rome and our split ends being a factor as CMB totally ignored them in the 1st game. We have a lot of weapons, just hope CMB will utilize all of them going forward.

Who in the hell said he had to apologize? There go those voices in your head again GTBob. Seek help. Its a free country. He can do whatever the hell he wants. As Chip said, he could have bolted for the locker room and no one would have thought a thing about it. Instead, he walked up to the dean of SEC coaches and apologized man to man. That takes stones. Stones that you obviously don’t have. Hell, I think you’re big mouthed coach owes Richt a couple of apologies after some of his tough talk on his radio call in shows over the years. Yeah right. Johnson can barely even look Richt in the eye anymore during the post-game handshakes. Once again, you Techies wouldn’t know anything about class.

“By apologizing he just looks like a coward.”

No GTBob, whining like a little girl about academics when your joke football team gets its azz kicked on the football field makes you look like a coward. I was fortunate enough to work the UGA/ Missouri game Saturday evening. The atmosphere was electric, and the crowd noise was definitely one of the loudest I have attended.

From my sideline view where I was, it was obvious that Missour is not physically ready to play in the SEC, not from talent at skill positions, but upfront on both sides of the ball. They need to get bigger and stronger to play 4 quarters in the SEC. Missour has a ton of talent but they are not deep enough to be able to play the physical brand of football played in the SEC. I have no doubt they will compete with everyone, but with their OL/DL depth it will hurt them.

The second thing I noticed was UGA OL at times looked confused on blocking assignments and forcing Murray to make throws he rushed into areas where good defensive teams would make plays that would go against UGA. Murray did a good job of picking his hot routes and making throws. The other thing that was apparent was the middle of the field was open most of the night against UGA,, Franklin made most of his plays behind the linebackers, as Missouri ran a ton of sideline WO routes allowing the Middle to be open. UGA will need other players to step it up besides Jarvis Jones in other games if a good team can block him( big if). I did not see a great deal of substitutions going on either side of the ball on defense which was surprised me especially for UGA.

Big Win for UGA. Good crowds and Great Fans from both schools.

Good luck to your teams and Go SEC!

Saying sorry to Jesus Richt takes stones? Im not sure Richt even cared about the comment, god knows he has probably heard much worse from his own players. The guy was asked a question and talked a little smack in his answer. All of the UGA fans got their feelings hurt so he shook Richt’s hand after the game. Back then, the option plays were run out of the single wing. Fullback fake, cross-buck, spinner, etc. In the early ’60s I played in the triple-option belly series, and I also had the glorious experience of playing one year against our hated rival who ran the single wing before they abandoned it. Common sense tells us that the real reason he apologized was one of two things:

@GTBob

Common sense tells us that the real reason he apologized was one of two things:

1. His coach made him apologize (likely).
2. He took so much crap about it that he took it upon himself to publicly apologize just so he didn’t have to hear UGA fans whine about it anymore. (less likely)

Haus, good point. We don’t know how good ECU’s D was. I have to say I was very impressed with Thompson’s arm and play. On the Visor, it looked like he was trying to go for two in the 4th qtr after they went up 41-3. It was confusing, so maybe I misread it. The only reason I could think of was that one more TD would have cracked 50 if they made it to 43, instead of 42. I saw a quote in the last couple of years saying he really wanted to start hanging 50+ on some of his victims. Like I said, I could be wrong, so maybe the press asked what was going on with that I got some kind of response. I couldn’t believe it, and hope there was a legitimate reason he went for two.

When the only thing to cheer about are moral victories, you know your football team and the culture of your program is abysmal.

While Georgia fans are celebrating a road victory (on the scoreboard), Tech fans are celebrating a moral victory by stealing the letter ‘T’ from their opponents’ stadium sign. Boy, you guys sure outsmarted them there!

A coward avoids confrontation and the possibility of harm or criticism. Sheldon Richardson did not at the end of the game. I thought all along it was going to be a tough game, it being Mizzou’s first game, and having to play at their place, and it sure looked bad for awhile. But, to the Dawgs credit, they fought hard and finally took over the game. There were a number of mistakes by both teams, but the one that really did Mizzou in, seemed to me, to be the fake punt that Richard Samuel blew up. God, I love that kid. Not sure if it was Sheldon’s comments, or the large number of doubters, or that awful yellow all over the stadium, but the Dawgs hung in there, and basically wore Mizzou down. Maybe, the strength and conditioning program deserves some credit. Maybe, the Dawgs saw all that yellow, and thought they were playing Tech. Whatever it was, it sure felt good!

As an Auburn alum, we all have a bunch of young kids who say and do stupid things. I applaud Mr. Richardson for showing a great deal of class!!! I also applaud Coach Richt!!!! As an Auburn fan, I hold the utmost respect for Coach Richt!!! If I had a son who was capable of playing college football, I would be honored for him to play for such a fine man!!!! One could play for Saban and get a ring or three, but I would rather trust my son’s future in the hand of Coach Richt!!! Not everyone will go to the NFL. Richt takes boys and makes men out of them. Congratulations UGA, Mark Richt screems CLASS!!!! War Eagle

A coward avoids confrontation and the possibility of harm or criticism. Sheldon Richardson did not at the end of the game.

Instead of being a man and owning what he said, he went over and apologized like a little girl. Sorry, but I consider that cowardly. Remember last year when UGA fans were upset with Mark Richt after he apologized for his players and coaches who almost started a fight after the Vandy game? Its similar to that. If you have nothing to apologize for and you apologize anyways then you fear some kind of backlash is coming and you are giving in to that fear. That is cowardly in and of itself.

to everyone saying how good Mizzou was:

They finshed 5th in a terrible league last year. They beat nobody of any significance last season. Their QB is really not an effective passer and they are undersized everywhere. The so-called #7 and third best team in the SEC should beaten them like a drum, but Missouri had the game in control until the lack of size and speed finally caught up to them. So yeah, they handed UGA their behinds for most of the game, though the scoreboard didn’t show it, just like the score 41-20 really doesn’t mean Georgia dominated either.

When unranked Arizona State goes in there this week and flat-out destroys Missouri, because “the Zou” just isn’t really that good or intimidating, what will you all say then, that the UGA game is the reason Missouri lost? some of you guys are delusional.

And I’m not a Tech fan

I think GTBob owes Sheldon Richardson an apology. Who Knows what was even said between Coach Richt and Mr. Richardson? Who knows Mr. Richardson’s motivation for approaching Coach Richt? No one on this Blog.

Yet, GTBob calls Mr. Richardson a coward and said he “talked big and ran off like a little girl in the end”.

Mr. Richardson insulted an opposing teams schematic approach to offense, and GTBob insulted the very same kid personally.

As a Mizzou extremist I think I speak for the knowledgeable side of our fan base in saying that we all quietly wanted Sheldon to put his foot in his mouth as soon as he made the ‘old man’ comment… That being said, I’m glad he apologized. I once had the pleasure (or lack of pleasure because he is huge) of sitting next to Sheldon on a plane flight from Los Angeles to St. Louis (the trojans were courting him…) he is a good kid. He has a big personality and he was just trying to get the team fired up in saying what he did. As for UGA—quite a squad you guys have— Jarvis Jones will haunt my dreams forever. And to think you guys were missing Rambo and Co. on D—wow… The game went pretty much how I thought it would— you guys just have more depth and defensive playmakers… My biggest fear about the SEC was realized on saturday— We just don’t have the depth. Hopefully we wil be able to recruit more depth in years to come but we are walking into this ASU game a crippled bunch.

Always respected Georgia— don’t like Spurrier, hate Florida, hate Saban, Les Miles sucks at coaching— thats about it… and Mississipi State and Tennessee are so overrated… Mizzou will win at Tennessee… See you guys in Athens next year.

Good luck

Bob Ritter– I like that you are a Mizzou fan with me but we DID NOT beat ourselves on Saturday night– Yes, we made some mistakes, but Georgia physically pounded us like only Oklahoma used to do in the big 12… Look at the injury report dude, that was physical football and we could not keep our head above water for 4 quarters… It is unfair to not give Georgia credit— we’ve seen this story before…like we Chase Daniel and Co would hang with the sooners for 3 quarters only to fall apart physically in the 4th Q… give credit where it is due. we’ll be alright

The final score against Missouri is not indicative of how tough they played Georgia . After Georgia went ahead Missouri was forced to play catch up and abandon their strategy of offense. When you fade back to pass on every play it is a lot easier for the defense to sack the QB and force a turn over or intercept.
The same thing happened to Georgia last year with L.S.U. If all you look at was the final score of 42-10 , it looks like L.S.U. beat us like a rented mule but everybody knows that was not the case. We made a lot of mistakes after Georgia started to play catch up in the late 3rd and fourth quarters and a great team will take advantage of those mistakes.
Georgia finally took control of the game because of our depth was better than Missouri but as long as number 34 and number 57 and Franklin are health every team that plays Missouri this year better respect them as a very good team. We did not beat the hell out of them , like the final score indicates. They are a good team ans will beat some other good teams this year.

Even with a decimated OLine, the Tigers hung tough well into the 4th Qtr. Very underrated Defense (especially Gaines, Gooden and Ebner). You’re right – - your first teamers can hang with anyone in an SEC game; but those physical SEC games demand roster depth. Hopefully the SEC cachet in recruiting helps build that starting next year. Fwiw, Mizzou has now overtaken Vandy as my 2d favorite SEC team. Go represent against those Sun Debbils!

I’m amazed that you still believe I am a Tech fan, even though I have never said anything of the sort. I’m not hiding behind anybody, just observant and realistic about the current state and reputation of UGA football. Georgia should beat Tech almost every year. Georgia has more money and resources and can recruit better talent because they play in a better conference. But UGA football is not superior, or classy for that matter. They are poorly coached and undisciplined. A classy, disciplined team doesn’t go party in the stands after playing a sloppy game against an unranked team they outmatch in both size and speed. But UGA fans will believe it was a dominating, impressive win and delude themselves in to thinking this staff has improved. They haven’t. UGA football is the same as it ever was and ever will be under Richt. But again, it’s okay because UGA beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl a few years ago.

You realize that realistic UGA fans know that Georgia cannot really compete with Alabama for the SEC, that the schedule is the best thing going for them this season, and that Richt and company will be outcoached in at least one game this season and get beat. UGA’s hopes always hinge on upsets of other teams in the division.

I’m not going to even bother to read most of the comments regarding this story because from what I’ve read so far, they are inherently negative and ignorant. The bottom line is that the young man did the right thing in the end. It’s so funny how quickly we forget what a lot of us were like at that age, when our elders couldn’t tell us anything because we knew it all. If he did this on his own…wonderful. But if he did it after being reprimanded and encouraged to do so, that’s fine too because that means he is being taught and coached to do the right thing and listening to those who are teaching him the right thing to do. Isn’t that what is supposed to happen? II thought that’s what college was for, to learn. Both inside and outside the classroom.

kingdaddy: Uh….multiple arrests, suspensions, players acting like they have no discipline on or off the field (see the dance party in the stands Saturday), and that’s just character issues that make UGA look bad, year after year, without the wins to smooth it over.

Now, on the field since the 2005 SEC Championship (and last championship): 2005 Sugar Bowl, 2008 blackout blowout, kickoff game vs. Boise with the stupid pro combat gear. Just to name a few.

Mark Richt seems a nice guy, and no doubt he works hard at football and works hard with those kids. But the problems keep surfacing. Had UGA lost that game, would anyone be saying “it’s okay, we had four starters out for disciplinary reasons….” No, everyone would be screaming for Richt’s firing and complaining about the game strategy and discipline issues surrounding the players. Those issues are still there, and UGA will again fail to realize their potential on the football field while the off-field issues will continue.

In a perfect world, this blog would be a wonderful experience. Since I’ve been here, its like walking in the hood. You never know what to expect. Sometimes its ok, sometimes you get bushwhacked. Sorry for your disappointment and hope you will return…

@kingdaddy By the way, I made it known I was a UGA fan (and alum, fwiw) a few nights ago. It’s actually easier when people think you are a Tech troll because then you don’t have people who rip you for not being a “true dawg fan”. I can still be a fan and not be pleased with the product I see and how it represents UGA.

@kingdaddy

kingdaddy: Uh….multiple arrests, suspensions, players acting like they have no discipline on or off the field (see the dance party in the stands Saturday), and that’s just character issues that make UGA look bad, year after year, without the wins to smooth it over.

——————————————————————————————————————————-
This is the same garbage that Tech fans bring up when they dont want to talk about Tech/Georgia head to head on the field. This Missouri win is really under his skin.I’m sure it broke his heart is broken because he was so sure he could hide behind them today..Spoken like a true Tech fan.

Some of what you say I totally agree with. Name a school where the kids don’t get in trouble? I get mad at Coach Bobo’s play calling, but he did better Sat.night. Was he perfect, no, but he got the job done. The players are trying really hard to “walk the line “. Our players aren’t thugs! You are wrong to think they are. They are just kids away from home, away from their parents for the first time. UGA will win this year and you being negative won’t change it. I see a perfect storm forming in Athens. I’m sure the MO coach had a good talk with Richardson but that was a good move to apologize to CMR. He should apologize because Richt knows nothing of “old man football”. That was Dooley when Ga was “Tailback U”. I for one have said that the Richt era has overemphasized the pass and we have not been known as a team with a rushing attack. Teams that win championships have good D and know how to run the ball..

Many times I have wanted to ring CMBs neck or kick a couple of players in the pants but the one thing I always have , is my love for UGA. Football is just a game, but UGA is a family. You may be new or old, it doesn’t matter. Wheather I agree with CMR or not doesn’t mean squat. He is the team captain and I trust him to get the team in line and do what he can do for this team. Its not up to me to judge 10-2. I just wish he went to a school where he wasn’t so unhappy. I know one thing: I am happy with the direction of this program and if you don’t like it, leave it…

kingdaddy…every week, some school/team has some argument of unfairness regarding the polls…it’s waaaaaaay early in the season to be worried about it. If UGA loses to TN, SC, and/or FL, it won’t matter. All you have to do is win all of your games…very rarely are their more than 2 unbeatens, and in most years not even that.

Why does Missouri have a really good team? Because they were ranked when you played them? Oh wait…Time will tell how good Missouri is. For now, UGA beat an unranked team. Again, a good win, but certainly not a “great” win.

One would yhink that a Bammy fan would be more concerned about the recent uprising of Louisiana-Monroe spanking of Arkansas than rattling on about GT and making light of what Holt did to Granning about 100 years ago at Grant Field. I saw that game and Holt should have been arrested. I don’t remember Bammy-ites taunting ANY SCHOOL about refusing to play Bammy until Saban came to the rescue. You will recall that EVERYBODY was clamoring to schedule Bammy for their Homecoming game.

Very bad news for The SEC West. Rumor has it that L-Monroe will be joining the SEC next year and playing in the West Division. Surely you remember L-Monroe, the team that kicked Bammy butt and Saban butt .all over the field in the Tuskaloser Bowl. 1. Richardson showed some maturity and some character.
2. SC is definitely our biggest obstacle to winning the East, and yes, Missouri proved they can compete in the SEC. Look at the Box Score, pretty even stats, and wasn’t it a 24-20 game at the start of the 4th quarter?
3. The goals for this Saturday, (1) win as impressively as we should, in order to hold our spot in the polls, (2) don’t get anybody hurt!
4. JJ is David Pollack reincarnated. It took a while, but welcome to big-time football Marlon Brown, keep it up!
5. JJ named Walter Camp and SEC Player of the Week was a no-brainer. When is the last time you saw a D player take over the game in that fashion? David Pollack against SC in 2002?

P.S. Alabama visits Fayetteville this Saturday. What if the earth stood still for a few hours and Arkansas upsets the Tide? Watch the polls go crazy. (I know, I know, but remember, I said, what if the earth stood still…..)

He doesn’t need to be apologizing to Mark Richt. As nice and classy as it was. He really needs to be aplogizing to his teammates, his coaches and the Mizzou fans, especially the ones that travel on the road with them. It wasn’t just UGA he foolishly insulted, it was the entire SEC. There’s a giant red target painted on all their backs right now. Think it was bad this week when it’s opening day in your own stadium and you get spanked. That’s sportsmanship on the side of Richardson. I’m sure he caught it from his coaching staff last week. It was a good game and they have no need to hang their heads. Sure, it was “classy” that the MO player apologized for a bone-head quote. That was a very nice gesture by the Mizzu player. I hope some of our players can learn from that as well. I don’t think he expected the firestorm that occured after what he said, but I think he handled it was class. Franlky, we were the ones who looked bad for throwing it back in thier face after winning the game. It was one player and not the sentiment of the entire team and fan base. While good motivation and entertainment, we could have been a little more humble in our win. We are number 7 and they are unranked. We were supposed to win and look better doing it. I know the boys were happy, but celebrate on the bus and act like it is business as usual on the field and shake hands and walk away. UGA does that gay thing where they get set on the line then everyone stands up to look to the sideline for help. That is not “old man football”. It’s more PAC, Big East, or FCS school football. Pretty pathetic of UGA.

GTBob, Let’s play ball, hopefully root for our in State rivals then strap it on when we compete and are bitter enemies for another 4 quarters this year. The banter is just good old smack to me after many years of watching both teams play.

I love the photo…..the non-verbals really show sincerity by Sheldon and it looks like CMR is being a totally class act. We are really lucky to have such a great man as our coach….and Missouri has a pretty classy guy in Richardson!!!!

Richardson is a man not a kid. The picture shows a lot of sincerity in his face. Everyone makes mistakes, men admit to them and apologize. Kudos Mr. Richardson.

One day…maybe…GTBob will be able to write something with substance, like how his techies won a game, or maybe something about his honeycomb helmets. Until then, trolling is all he has to share. I appreciate his consistent observations of something he will never have…a winning older man football team!

Not often in this day and age of “it’s not my fault” do we see any one with the decency to apologize, and do it face to face. Kudo’s to Sheldon Richardson.

Remember when Jesus said “don’t cast your pearls to swine”? They will stomp all over them. I know this really isn’t what He meant by that, but you get the idea. GTBob is swine and all he wants is your response so He can feel better about his obviously miserable life. What do you want us to say GTBob? That we are sorry that UGA smashes GT’s face every year? Because I for one I’m NOT! Go Dawgs!
