Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson apologizes to Georgia coach Mark Richt after the Bulldogs 41-20 win in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday. (AP photo by L.G. Patterson)
FIVE MORE THINGS
Wrapping up this past weekend and looking forward to this one.
The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a 41-20 win over Missouri in the SEC opener for both teams. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC as they head into Saturday’s game against visiting Florida Atlantic (1-1, 0-1 Sun Belt).
1. Last thing on “Old Man Football, Hopefully forever. I do want to give credit where credit is due. Sheldon Richardson, the Missouri defensive lineman who infamously coined that phrase for Georgia, came up to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt after the game to apologize. Pretty impressive considering how easy it could have been for him to just slink off to the Tigers’ locker room.
For what it’s worth, Richardson was not made available for interviews after the game and is not available today, as a Missouri beat writer tells. That’s why you haven’t seen him quoted anywhere. But Missouri coach Gary Pinkel addressed on Monday and said Richardson’s apololgy was “not orchestrated by us.”
“People make mistakes, you know, and get second chances,” Pinkel told reporters. “That’s all part of maturing. I think that’s a good statement on his part.”
Below is a video that shows the on-field celebration by the Bulldogs after the game. Obviously everybody was pretty pumped after the game. . . .
2. Georgia remained at No. 7 both in The Associated Press writer’s poll and the USA Today coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs, of course, started the season at No. 6 but dropped a spot in both polls after a ho-hum 45-23 win over Buffalo in the opener.
By the way, South Carolina moved up to No. 8 right behind Georgia after its 48-10 win over East Carolina and a really bad night for previous No. 8 Arkansas. The Gamecocks (2-0, 1-0 SEC) play host to UAB this Saturday, then get Missouri at Williams-Brice on Sept. 22. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare against the Tigers, who seemed like a pretty game club to me. Mizzou, by the way, plays host to Arizona State on Saturday.
3. As I mentioned, UGA has Florida Atlantic — or FAU, as they like to call themselves — coming into Athens this weekend. The Owls are members of the same Sun Belt Conference as Louisiana-Monroe, which pulled off a shocking upset of eight-ranked Arkansas 34-31 in overtime. Certainly that victory has made believers out of everybody in the Sun Belt and will give the Bulldogs’ coaches plenty of fodder for team motivation. But from what I’ve seen I don’t think FAU is quite on par with their conference brethren.
The Owls this past weekend lost this 31-17 to Middle Tennessee State. Apparently ball security is an issue for them. They’ve had six fumbles in two games, including four in the 7-6 win over Wagner. Meanwhile, La-Monroe continues its tour of the SEC. Next stop: Auburn on Saturday.
4. Kind of lost in the late-game heroics displayed by Jarvis Jones in Georgia’s win over Missouri on Saturday was the spectacular play of split end Marlon Brown. the big senior from Memphis had a career-best 8 catches for 106 yards and caught two big TD passes for the Bulldogs. He was asked afterward if he thought it was a “break-out game” for him.
“Yes, definitely, sure,” he said. “It feels pretty good but there’s always room for improvement. I’m going to go back and watch film and see what I can improve on and try to get better every week.”
That’s typical of Brown. He’s an incredibly humble kid who has had to overcome a lot of injuries — not to mention high expectations — since he’s been at Georgia. He was more excited to talk about how the Bulldogs finished Saturday’s game. They scored 24 unanswered points to put it away.
“We came in at halftime and heard a great speech from Coach Richt,” Brown said. “He said the last two ballgames we didn’t finish the drill. After that, we were like, ‘Man, he’s right. Let’s finish the drill like Coach Richt said.’ And we did.”
5. Other news items from Monday, Georgia’s Sept. 22 home date against Vanderbilt got picked up by ESPN2 for a 7:45 p.m. broadcast, Jones was named Walter Camp national and SEC defensive player of the week. And don’t forget “Russ” gets his official sworn in as Uga IX on Saturday.

@kingdaddy. Thank you for a well-thought response. More than I can say for slick rick, but it was fun goading him. And I do enjoy the wins but there’s not been enough lately to make up for all the other crap surrounding this program, it seems. Maybe this year. I just want them to do it in a way that makes UGA proud for years, unlike somebody like USC or Auburn.

I’m sure the MO coach had a good talk with Richardson but that was a good move to apologize to CMR. He should apologize because Richt knows nothing of “old man football”. That was Dooley when Ga was “Tailback U”. I for one have said that the Richt era has overemphasized the pass and we have not been known as a team with a rushing attack. Teams that win championships have good D and know how to run the ball..

Many times I have wanted to ring CMBs neck or kick a couple of players in the pants but the one thing I always have , is my love for UGA. Football is just a game, but UGA is a family. You may be new or old, it doesn’t matter. Wheather I agree with CMR or not doesn’t mean squat. He is the team captain and I trust him to get the team in line and do what he can do for this team. Its not up to me to judge 10-2. I just wish he went to a school where he wasn’t so unhappy. I know one thing: I am happy with the direction of this program and if you don’t like it, leave it…

Just what in hell is wrong with dancing in the stands when your team wins a game like UGA did on Saturday???
You leave CMR alone you knucklehead!!!!!!!!! GOD is going to get you sooner or later
According to ESPN, CMR is the 4th winningest active coach in the nation. None of the 3 coaches ahead of CMR is named Saban or Miles or Spurrier or Paul Johnson or Petrino!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we won a great, “historic” game and it still isn’t good enough for everyone. Hope we smack FAU by 60. If we destroy them, at least we won’t go back in the polls. All is good in the Dawg Nation right now…

And as far as beating FAU by 60, you probably will…but you don’t need to. All you need to do is win all of your games.

Well, to be fair, if you include FCS games then Paul Johnson is well ahead of Richt. CPJ has also won at three different schools now. I would love to see how Richt would do at Navy.

I have been shooting(AT) doves and preparing deer food plots; grilling steaks, shrimp and chicken and drinking a few ice cold Coors in them fancy aluminum cans with the screw tops(That’s about all the screwing I get involved with anymore). The cans are great and make really good spit cups when having a “Chaw” while driving. I am still high(Not alcohol high) while watching reruns of the 41 – 20 game in Columbia on Saturday night????
QUESTION: What ever gave you the idea that 10 – 2 went to any school?? They ain’t been no evidence on here that would cause me to think he has ANY schooling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10 – 2 is Game Changer. Ain’t no doubt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kingdaddy…every week, some school/team has some argument of unfairness regarding the polls…it’s waaaaaaay early in the season to be worried about it. If UGA loses to TN, SC, and/or FL, it won’t matter. All you have to do is win all of your games…very rarely are their more than 2 unbeatens, and in most years not even that.
Why does Missouri have a really good team? Because they were ranked when you played them? Oh wait…Time will tell how good Missouri is. For now, UGA beat an unranked team. Again, a good win, but certainly not a “great” win.

Navy can’t afford CMR and CPJ is nowhere near CMR on won/lost records among active coaches but CPJ is a Damn Good Coach. I can’t believe all the BS that was posted about GT losing to VT in a damn good and close game.
Regardless of how you want to put it CPJ is not, nor will he EVER be ahead of CMR in won/lost records
even if you go back to the sandlot pick up games CPJ coached and played in………………………………….but it’s okay if you want tp say otherwise because I love your stupid little a$$ anyway. Do Alabama fans say that they had a “great” win when they beat an unranked team? How about LSU? “Great” wins usually regarded as a team that beats a Top 10 team…or maybe a team that beats a team that was ranked higher than they are…However, a number 7 team beating an unranked team? Nah

One would yhink that a Bammy fan would be more concerned about the recent uprising of Louisiana-Monroe spanking of Arkansas than rattling on about GT and making light of what Holt did to Granning about 100 years ago at Grant Field. I saw that game and Holt should have been arrested. I don’t remember Bammy-ites taunting ANY SCHOOL about refusing to play Bammy until Saban came to the rescue. You will recall that EVERYBODY was clamoring to schedule Bammy for their Homecoming game.
Very bad news for The SEC West. Rumor has it that L-Monroe will be joining the SEC next year and playing in the West Division. Surely you remember L-Monroe, the team that kicked Bammy butt and Saban butt .all over the field in the Tuskaloser Bowl. Since L-Monroe has already beaten Arky and Bammy(They beat Bammy the worst) LSU(aka Loose Screw U) is next.
Nother Thang!!!! UGA isn’t on L-Monroe’s schedule!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was skeptical at first about Missouri in the SEC, but after this weekend,I am glad they are. They seem to actually fit right in. As for Richardson- he is a kid…but it was a classy move on his part to say something to Coach Richt. Missouri- stop feeling like you have to prove you belong. From what I witnessed Friday and Sat in Columbia you will be fine. NOW- go beat SC !!

Also the option offense at Tech is great when it works and you move the ball and have the lead, but fall behind in the 4th qtr with limited time and your dead. Heres to hoping that happens a lot this season for the insects…GO Dawgs !

1. Richardson showed some maturity and some character.
2. SC is definitely our biggest obstacle to winning the East, and yes, Missouri proved they can compete in the SEC. Look at the Box Score, pretty even stats, and wasn’t it a 24-20 game at the start of the 4th quarter?
3. The goals for this Saturday, (1) win as impressively as we should, in order to hold our spot in the polls, (2) don’t get anybody hurt!
4. JJ is David Pollack reincarnated. It took a while, but welcome to big-time football Marlon Brown, keep it up!
5. JJ named Walter Camp and SEC Player of the Week was a no-brainer. When is the last time you saw a D player take over the game in that fashion? David Pollack against SC in 2002?
P.S. Alabama visits Fayetteville this Saturday. What if the earth stood still for a few hours and Arkansas upsets the Tide? Watch the polls go crazy. (I know, I know, but remember, I said, what if the earth stood still…..)

1sr. The Mizzou kid showed a lot of class. From frineds who went to the game, the whole crowd had class and wished UGA well this year. The compared it to going to Ole Miss in regards to the attmosphere.
2nd. Marlon Brown and Richard Samuel are both class acts and do the University proud. I wish both would have outstanding years and contipults them to the next level.
