FIVE MORE THINGS

Wrapping up this past weekend and looking forward to this one.

The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a 41-20 win over Missouri in the SEC opener for both teams. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC as they head into Saturday’s game against visiting Florida Atlantic (1-1, 0-1 Sun Belt).

1. Last thing on “Old Man Football, Hopefully forever. I do want to give credit where credit is due. Sheldon Richardson, the Missouri defensive lineman who infamously coined that phrase for Georgia, came up to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt after the game to apologize. Pretty impressive considering how easy it could have been for him to just slink off to the Tigers’ locker room.

For what it’s worth, Richardson was not made available for interviews after the game and is not available today, as a Missouri beat writer tells. That’s why you haven’t seen him quoted anywhere. But Missouri coach Gary Pinkel addressed on Monday and said Richardson’s apololgy was “not orchestrated by us.”

“People make mistakes, you know, and get second chances,” Pinkel told reporters. “That’s all part of maturing. I think that’s a good statement on his part.”

Below is a video that shows the on-field celebration by the Bulldogs after the game. Obviously everybody was pretty pumped after the game. . . .

2. Georgia remained at No. 7 both in The Associated Press writer’s poll and the USA Today coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs, of course, started the season at No. 6 but dropped a spot in both polls after a ho-hum 45-23 win over Buffalo in the opener.

By the way, South Carolina moved up to No. 8 right behind Georgia after its 48-10 win over East Carolina and a really bad night for previous No. 8 Arkansas. The Gamecocks (2-0, 1-0 SEC) play host to UAB this Saturday, then get Missouri at Williams-Brice on Sept. 22. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare against the Tigers, who seemed like a pretty game club to me. Mizzou, by the way, plays host to Arizona State on Saturday.

3. As I mentioned, UGA has Florida Atlantic — or FAU, as they like to call themselves — coming into Athens this weekend. The Owls are members of the same Sun Belt Conference as Louisiana-Monroe, which pulled off a shocking upset of eight-ranked Arkansas 34-31 in overtime. Certainly that victory has made believers out of everybody in the Sun Belt and will give the Bulldogs’ coaches plenty of fodder for team motivation. But from what I’ve seen I don’t think FAU is quite on par with their conference brethren.

The Owls this past weekend lost this 31-17 to Middle Tennessee State. Apparently ball security is an issue for them. They’ve had six fumbles in two games, including four in the 7-6 win over Wagner. Meanwhile, La-Monroe continues its tour of the SEC. Next stop: Auburn on Saturday.

4. Kind of lost in the late-game heroics displayed by Jarvis Jones in Georgia’s win over Missouri on Saturday was the spectacular play of split end Marlon Brown. the big senior from Memphis had a career-best 8 catches for 106 yards and caught two big TD passes for the Bulldogs. He was asked afterward if he thought it was a “break-out game” for him.

“Yes, definitely, sure,” he said. “It feels pretty good but there’s always room for improvement. I’m going to go back and watch film and see what I can improve on and try to get better every week.”

That’s typical of Brown. He’s an incredibly humble kid who has had to overcome a lot of injuries — not to mention high expectations — since he’s been at Georgia. He was more excited to talk about how the Bulldogs finished Saturday’s game. They scored 24 unanswered points to put it away.

“We came in at halftime and heard a great speech from Coach Richt,” Brown said. “He said the last two ballgames we didn’t finish the drill. After that, we were like, ‘Man, he’s right. Let’s finish the drill like Coach Richt said.’ And we did.”

5. Other news items from Monday, Georgia’s Sept. 22 home date against Vanderbilt got picked up by ESPN2 for a 7:45 p.m. broadcast, Jones was named Walter Camp national and SEC defensive player of the week. And don’t forget “Russ” gets his official sworn in as Uga IX on Saturday.

Matt: See my comments to MIZ97 above. You Mizzou fans were very gracious, and it is much appreciated. Hope we will treat your traveling fans the same way next year in Athens. Even with a decimated OLine, the Tigers hung tough well into the 4th Qtr. Very underrated Defense (especially Gaines, Gooden and Ebner). You’re right – - your first teamers can hang with anyone in an SEC game; but those physical SEC games demand roster depth. Hopefully the SEC cachet in recruiting helps build that starting next year. Fwiw, Mizzou has now overtaken Vandy as my 2d favorite SEC team. Go represent against those Sun Debbils!

Don’t know your intelligence level of college football but MU led UGA for almost 3 quarters and lost due to a bad call and 2 mistakes. Georgia didn’t beat MU … MU beat themselves. MU will have a winning season in the “SEC” whose fans think their conference ” does not stink ” because that’s all they know in the south. MU fans have other interest, especially academics and that is more than I can say about many SEC athletic programs and many of their fans like you

You did not read any of that from me…..you are lost

It appears that UGA has shown some great football ability against Mizzu especially in the 2nd half but if we are to hope for that “Championship” we got to keep most of our guys healthy AND eligible. We have several BIGTIME STUDS such as JJ, Gurley, John Jenkins, Murray, etc. If one or more of those types go down we would be in for some really tough going!!!!!!!

Anybody know Jenkins’ injury status???????????????

This young man did a classy thing and whether did it alone or with his HC’s help, it matters not.

Maybe if you apologize to CMR like Richardson did you may have some outside chance of making it to HEAVEN!!!!!!!

I think I will go over to the GT blog and troll for a while as I sit here with one hand down the trousers and the other banging out provoking garbage about a team that I don’t pull for in the hopes that I can get someone to show me some attention. Man, grow up and move on. Are you really that desperate for a conversation? You don’t care about the team or watch the game but you desperately try to provoke others with your caddy remarks. If your an adult find a productive hobby. If your retired go do something, anything to help others rather than bait people on here. It got old a long time ago. Cocaine really is a h-ll of a drug,…1st. Tech’s win over Clemson was against an undefeated team and kept them alive in the ACC. I’d say that was worth celebrating at the time. 2nd. I don’t think you are bright enough to understand your own point, much less the one I made about LSU/UGA. 3rd. UGA was ranked #11 and beat UGA at home.

It’s okay buddy. Celebrate the win against the unranked team that basically gave you the game in the 4th quarter. I’ll check to see if you are defending this team when the blockhead coaching staff costs them a game in a few more weeks.

In the meantime, is that win over Hawaii still the pride and joy of Bull-dawg-nation?

@Rick James

I’m amazed that you still believe I am a Tech fan, even though I have never said anything of the sort. I’m not hiding behind anybody, just observant and realistic about the current state and reputation of UGA football. Georgia should beat Tech almost every year. Georgia has more money and resources and can recruit better talent because they play in a better conference. But UGA football is not superior, or classy for that matter. They are poorly coached and undisciplined. A classy, disciplined team doesn’t go party in the stands after playing a sloppy game against an unranked team they outmatch in both size and speed. But UGA fans will believe it was a dominating, impressive win and delude themselves in to thinking this staff has improved. They haven’t. UGA football is the same as it ever was and ever will be under Richt. But again, it’s okay because UGA beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl a few years ago.

@ Rick James

You realize that realistic UGA fans know that Georgia cannot really compete with Alabama for the SEC, that the schedule is the best thing going for them this season, and that Richt and company will be outcoached in at least one game this season and get beat. UGA’s hopes always hinge on upsets of other teams in the division.

So talk to me when those losses happen and let’s see how loyal of a UGA fan you are then. I would guess not very.

The way that Georgia played this weekend at Mizzou and I think they can play with anyone. They played minus four defensive starters and shut down that offense! Two blown plays that probably wouldn’t have happened with Commings and Rambo back there.

Because the Missouri fans cant talk any more smack.Alabama,LSU and South Carolina or as good or better so there’s no need for their fans to be here talking smack. That only leave the fans from the inferior in state school which is who? I’m not going to even bother to read most of the comments regarding this story because from what I’ve read so far, they are inherently negative and ignorant. The bottom line is that the young man did the right thing in the end. It’s so funny how quickly we forget what a lot of us were like at that age, when our elders couldn’t tell us anything because we knew it all. If he did this on his own…wonderful. But if he did it after being reprimanded and encouraged to do so, that’s fine too because that means he is being taught and coached to do the right thing and listening to those who are teaching him the right thing to do. Isn’t that what is supposed to happen? II thought that’s what college was for, to learn. Both inside and outside the classroom.

kingdaddy: Uh….multiple arrests, suspensions, players acting like they have no discipline on or off the field (see the dance party in the stands Saturday), and that’s just character issues that make UGA look bad, year after year, without the wins to smooth it over.

Now, on the field since the 2005 SEC Championship (and last championship): 2005 Sugar Bowl, 2008 blackout blowout, kickoff game vs. Boise with the stupid pro combat gear. Just to name a few.

Mark Richt seems a nice guy, and no doubt he works hard at football and works hard with those kids. But the problems keep surfacing. Had UGA lost that game, would anyone be saying “it’s okay, we had four starters out for disciplinary reasons….” No, everyone would be screaming for Richt’s firing and complaining about the game strategy and discipline issues surrounding the players. Those issues are still there, and UGA will again fail to realize their potential on the football field while the off-field issues will continue.
