FIVE MORE THINGS
Wrapping up this past weekend and looking forward to this one.
The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a 41-20 win over Missouri in the SEC opener for both teams. The Bulldogs are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC as they head into Saturday’s game against visiting Florida Atlantic (1-1, 0-1 Sun Belt).
1. Last thing on “Old Man Football, Hopefully forever. I do want to give credit where credit is due. Sheldon Richardson, the Missouri defensive lineman who infamously coined that phrase for Georgia, came up to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt after the game to apologize. Pretty impressive considering how easy it could have been for him to just slink off to the Tigers’ locker room.
For what it’s worth, Richardson was not made available for interviews after the game and is not available today, as a Missouri beat writer tells. That’s why you haven’t seen him quoted anywhere. But Missouri coach Gary Pinkel addressed on Monday and said Richardson’s apololgy was “not orchestrated by us.”
“People make mistakes, you know, and get second chances,” Pinkel told reporters. “That’s all part of maturing. I think that’s a good statement on his part.”
Below is a video that shows the on-field celebration by the Bulldogs after the game. Obviously everybody was pretty pumped after the game. . . .
2. Georgia remained at No. 7 both in The Associated Press writer’s poll and the USA Today coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs, of course, started the season at No. 6 but dropped a spot in both polls after a ho-hum 45-23 win over Buffalo in the opener.
By the way, South Carolina moved up to No. 8 right behind Georgia after its 48-10 win over East Carolina and a really bad night for previous No. 8 Arkansas. The Gamecocks (2-0, 1-0 SEC) play host to UAB this Saturday, then get Missouri at Williams-Brice on Sept. 22. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare against the Tigers, who seemed like a pretty game club to me. Mizzou, by the way, plays host to Arizona State on Saturday.
3. As I mentioned, UGA has Florida Atlantic — or FAU, as they like to call themselves — coming into Athens this weekend. The Owls are members of the same Sun Belt Conference as Louisiana-Monroe, which pulled off a shocking upset of eight-ranked Arkansas 34-31 in overtime. Certainly that victory has made believers out of everybody in the Sun Belt and will give the Bulldogs’ coaches plenty of fodder for team motivation. But from what I’ve seen I don’t think FAU is quite on par with their conference brethren.
The Owls this past weekend lost this 31-17 to Middle Tennessee State. Apparently ball security is an issue for them. They’ve had six fumbles in two games, including four in the 7-6 win over Wagner. Meanwhile, La-Monroe continues its tour of the SEC. Next stop: Auburn on Saturday.
4. Kind of lost in the late-game heroics displayed by Jarvis Jones in Georgia’s win over Missouri on Saturday was the spectacular play of split end Marlon Brown. the big senior from Memphis had a career-best 8 catches for 106 yards and caught two big TD passes for the Bulldogs. He was asked afterward if he thought it was a “break-out game” for him.
“Yes, definitely, sure,” he said. “It feels pretty good but there’s always room for improvement. I’m going to go back and watch film and see what I can improve on and try to get better every week.”
That’s typical of Brown. He’s an incredibly humble kid who has had to overcome a lot of injuries — not to mention high expectations — since he’s been at Georgia. He was more excited to talk about how the Bulldogs finished Saturday’s game. They scored 24 unanswered points to put it away.
“We came in at halftime and heard a great speech from Coach Richt,” Brown said. “He said the last two ballgames we didn’t finish the drill. After that, we were like, ‘Man, he’s right. Let’s finish the drill like Coach Richt said.’ And we did.”
5. Other news items from Monday, Georgia’s Sept. 22 home date against Vanderbilt got picked up by ESPN2 for a 7:45 p.m. broadcast, Jones was named Walter Camp national and SEC defensive player of the week. And don’t forget “Russ” gets his official sworn in as Uga IX on Saturday.

GT Bob,
Your prior comments (before today) prove that you are an idiot. Your comments today confirm that you have no class. Why I am surprised? You are a typical Georgia Tech know it all, who never played sports or can relate to people.

Insiders on message boards were discussing Crowell’s suspension before the Florida game and Rick James is still convinced that nobody knew until after the Florida game. Delusion is turning into denial.

Haus, I still wasn’t happy with the drops. Burning defenses is the best way to stop the massive blitzing on our young line. Receivers/QB can put a stop to it. Dropping a ball on a heavy blitz is like missing a quail after your prize Dawg goes to the trouble of pointing him, only worse.

Loyal Dawg, I see what you’re saying. UT will be a much tougher challenge this year and USCe looks to be a little overrated. Hope the Dawgs get back to beating Darth Visor again. Three losses to those dudes would be unacceptable.

Agreed, CHDawg. Waaaay too many drops by some key receivers in the game. At first I was willing to blame it on nerves but after a while it was just getting old. Murray made some impressive throws that some guys just couldn’t hang on to. Hope they address that in practice this week.

Bob, the AJC reported that UGA was notified on Tuesday after the game. They tested before the game; I wonder who might have leaked that IC might have failed the test? Since he was likely the only one who knew for sure, it was likely IC or someone he confessed to. Your comment is libelous, Bob.

Haus, I don’t know if you watched SC Saturday, but they looked very strong. The backup QB looked fantastic. SC went up a lot in everybody’s estimation as a result. They looked more like Florida under Spurrier than SC under Spurrier. Lattimore did about as well as Marshall did. They didn’t use him much.

Bob, you aren’t too bright, are you? What was Richt supposed to do? Sit him out on a rumor? Richt *had to wait* until the tests were officially released, even if he saw the rumors. I’m sure he doesn’t sit people out because they made a bad score on a test either. He has to wait until the official grade comes in. But, never mind that Georgia is aggressively testing their athletes under policies they have control over, Bob. Like I said, not too bright. Are you really that dumb, or has your hatred of UGA clouded your mind? Don’t forget that most drug testing companies use split samples to protect the people being tested from a false test. They run the test on the first sample and if the results are positive they test the other sample. Takes time. But, it isn’t official until it is official.

Bob, I imagine the kid felt the need to apologize because something he said got blown into the appearance of disrespect. The media certainly portrayed it that way. Give the kid some credit that he understands thats the reality of perception is more important than some pompous argument about his right to answer a question, or the phrasing of words.
The mistake he made was underestimating how those kinds of comments can turn into (what it did).
Sometimes people still apologize for things that were not entirely thier fault or thier intentions. I am sure you understand that, despite you pretending not to.

CH, I didn’t see the USCe game, but heard the backup QB did pretty well. I never thought that Shaw kid was anything special, so they might have found their man. If he can put up those kinds of numbers against SEC opponents, we might have something to worry about. I really hope the Dawgs handle those guys this year, though. Sick of losing to Darth Visor!

“That option is a throw-back to 1940’s football.”
Back then, the option plays were run out of the single wing. Fullback fake, cross-buck, spinner, etc. In the early ’60s I played in the triple-option belly series, and I also had the glorious experience of playing one year against our hated rival who ran the single wing before they abandoned it. Remember Billy Kilmer, QB of the Redskins? Single wing tailback at for UCLA.

The mistake he made was underestimating how those kinds of comments can turn into (what it did).
Common sense tells us that the real reason he apologized was one of two things:
1. His coach made him apologize (likely).
2. He took so much crap about it that he took it upon himself to publicly apologize just so he didn’t have to hear UGA fans whine about it anymore. (less likely)

Haus, good point. We don’t know how good ECU’s D was. I have to say I was very impressed with Thompson’s arm and play. On the Visor, it looked like he was trying to go for two in the 4th qtr after they went up 41-3. It was confusing, so maybe I misread it. The only reason I could think of was that one more TD would have cracked 50 if they made it to 43, instead of 42. I saw a quote in the last couple of years saying he really wanted to start hanging 50+ on some of his victims. Like I said, I could be wrong, so maybe the press asked what was going on with that I got some kind of response. I couldn’t believe it, and hope there was a legitimate reason he went for two.
