Sunday’s UGA notes: Offense or defense or both for Malcolm Mitchell?
8:53 pm September 9, 2012, by Tim Tucker
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham filled in for head coach Mark Richt on Georgia’s weekly media teleconference Sunday evening. (Richt was tending to some family business, UGA said.) What they had to say:
- Not surprisingly, both Bobo and Grantham expressed a desire to have cornerback/wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell on their side of the ball. Mitchell missed the season opener with an ankle injury and played defense in Saturday’s win at Missouri. Now, with defensive back Sanders Commings returning from suspension for this week’s game against Florida Atlantic, it sounds as if Mitchell’s role is up for discussion again.
First, from Bobo:
“I promise you, I’m going to go in there politicking hard for him offensively. I already walked in there to Coach Grantham’s meeting earlier this afternoon and asked what kind of offense FAU runs, what kind of personnel groups, how many receivers they’re going to have on the field. He was trying to say they play five wides. I don’t think they play five wides. [He was] joking a little bit, like he had to have him.
“But that’s something we’ll talk about as a staff. He’s going to get back on offense some this week. We’ve already discussed about that earlier in camp. Whether it will be full-time yet, I don’t know. But I sure would love to have him on offense, and he did a good job on defense the other night.”
And then, a bit later on the teleconference, Grantham:
“I think he’s a guy that will still continue to play on defense, because there is a need for him and what he brings to our defense. I think for the first time out he did a good job. He’s aggressive. He understood the route concepts and what’s happening. I thought he played better the more he played. I think he’s only going to get better as a corner. I think he’s the kind of guy that can be a very valuable guy to us moving forward on the defensive side of the ball. So we’ll continue to use him and work him in as needed and use his skill set to help us be productive on defense.”
Sounds like a question for Richt at Tuesday’s press conference.
- Todd Gurley got the start at tailback Saturday after his breakout performance in the season opener. Bobo estimated Sunday, off the top of his head, that Gurley played 39 snaps against Missouri, Keith Marshall 22 and Ken Malcome 13. “It’s based off production,” Bobo said. “Todd obviously had the biggest production last night in amount of yards (65) and yards per carry (6.5).” Bobo said Gurley didn’t get as many carries (10) as Marshall (12) because “some of the situations dictated we were spreading it out and throwing it when he was in there.” Said Bobo: “I think all of them did a nice job. All of them ran hard. We obviously didn’t block the way we wanted to on every play. … All of them are progressing. This week again will be another competition, along with their first two games of how we grade them and their production, [to] determine who the starter is.”
- Not surprisingly, Grantham provided no update on the status of suspended players Alec Ogletree and Bacarri Rambo. “We’ll just have to see what happens as we move forward.” As for Commings and linebacker Chase Vasser, whose suspensions are completed, Grantham said the plan is to use them in the same way as last season. With Commings, that means getting him ready to play both cornerback and safety, Grantham said. Grantham said he had received no report Sunday on the status of nose guard John Jenkins and defensive end/outside linebacker Cornelius Washington, both of whom “injured lower parts of their body” against Missouri, Grantham said. “We’ll have to wait and see tomorrow.” (Richt indicated after the game that Jenkins did not appear to be seriously hurt.)
- The sprained ankle that sidelined freshman right tackle John Theus from practice for the first three days last week “hurt him a little” in the game, Bobo said. Theus “went through some adversity in the game, a couple of missed blocks and some missed assignments,” Bobo said. “But the guy continued to play hard and play physical. … We’ve just got to get him out to practice this week so he can get better.” Theus was flagged for three false-start penalties against Missouri.

Obama Sin Laden:
Richt and Company know WAY more football than I do. That doesnt mean that they don’t make mistakes and errors in judgement. I never called them STUPID or that I know as much as they do. I;m saying hey, here are 3 or 4 things that make no sense to me. Keeping several starters in game with 2 min. left on def. Giving Gurley only 10 carries (coach Richt told Chip Towers during the week that Gurley was going to get the ball a whole lot more this week, it didn’t happen and I believe that was a mistake). Throwing the ball twice from the MO 2 yard line shows that we don’t really think about the run. Is there a more sure play to pick up the 7 points in that situation than to give it to Gurley in the I formation and him power it in?
However, your calling our gameplan conservative is laughable.
Chuck it deep, Chuck it deep, run it… is not conservative playcalling.
First and goal at the opponents 2 yard line and we call two straight pass plays from the 2 yard line… there is NOTHING conservative about that. OK, we didn’t try a fumblerooski, or double reverse so I suppose you could say we didn’t try a lot of trickeration, but we weren’t exactly Vince Dooley or Tom Osbourne 3 yards and a cloud of dust conservative. We were think pass first and think pass second and then Oh yeah, we have Todd Gurley so maybe we should run him a few times (lets don’t get that 18 year old too tired though, lets keep him to 10 carries or less as he plays some on special teams).
A conservative gameplan?

As has been said, we need young Mr Mitchell more on the D side more than the O…at least for now. To me we’ve already got the finest set of receivers in the Conference, if not the Country. Plus we’ve yet to see Scott-Wesley. Let Mitchell play D and see just how good that side can be…particularly after all the kids are back…who knows, maybe we’ll get the rep of having both the best receivers and the best D-backs in the SEC and beyond…just sayin.

To whomever it was talking about the collective IQ of the Georgia faithful, I hold a doctorate in microbiology, and I can assure you that I am very much a Georgia Bulldog. It is nice to see your lack of intelegence however, as your own post has subjected you to the maturity level of a young child.
As for the true faithful Dawgs out there, lets enjoy this win and hopefully the Dawgs can use this to propel themselves to a title! GO DAWGS!

It was MR that drug tested them too. Not the NCAA. Why would any coach in his right mind drug test teenagers when they just got back from spring break. They are down there parting like every other college student in the country. They need to let these kids have some what of a life and fun for god sakes. You can beat your girlfriend. That’s fine. But don’t smoke a harmless planet. And people wonder why the world is so fundamentally messed up.

I would agree that randomly testing anybody the day after spring break is asking for trouble. BUT in this case, these boys got tested because they were scheduled to be tested, and they knew that. (just like if you had failed an earlier random test at your place of business, you would be regularly tested for some period of time, as a condition to keeping your job).
And even pushing your ex-GF away lands you a pretty heavy penalty, so obviously it NO, you can’t “beat your girlfriend”.

Anybody else notice how hard Mitchell was hitting people also? The kids motor is great on both sides of the ball…..even with a slightly bum ankle. He might be better in time as a DB. Most likely next year.

#36 on defense acts like a damned idiot, prancing and jumping around like he made the game winning play – when the opponent makes a 5-10 yard catch against him. Act like you have been there before Dawgs, not like a bunch of idiots. And I am a FAN…
