Accolades follow Jarvis Jones’ performance against Missouri

After weeks of chatter about the four suspended defensive players who would not be on the field for Georgia’s SEC opener at Missouri, the topic of conversation in the game’s aftermath turned to one who did play, linebacker Jarvis Jones.

Georgia coach Mark Richt called Jones “maybe the best defensive player in America.” The Walter Camp Football Foundation named him the national defensive player of the week. UPDATE: Jones was also named SEC defensive player of the week on Monday. Even Braves third baseman Chipper Jones chimed in, posting to his 145,000-plus Twitter followers: “Jarvis Jones is a monster! Shocker! He is a Jones!”

“I think it was a special game,” Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Sunday of Jones’ performance. “… He is a special guy that works extremely hard in his preparation. He’s really instinctive. He does a lot of things for us.”

Jones was a force throughout Saturday’s victory over Missouri and punctuated his performance with two huge plays near the end: an interception and a forced fumble that gave Georgia’s offense the ball at Missouri’s 1- and 5-yard lines, respectively, in the fourth quarter. Those plays led to 14 points within less than three minutes, stretching a tenuous 27-20 Georgia lead to the comfortable final margin of 41-20.

For the night, Jones had eight tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one interception and one pass breakup – all of that with a strained groin muscle that Richt said hobbled him at practice last week and bothered him throughout the game.

“Really, I think the way [Jones] finished the game is the way we finished as a team,” Grantham said. “We emphasized finishing in the fourth quarter, taking charge of that quarter and winning it. And really that’s what we did there.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo noted the difference from last season’s SEC opener, when Georgia led South Carolina 35-31 in the fourth quarter in Athens but lost 45-42.

“We didn’t finish in the fourth quarter [against South Carolina],” Bobo said. “But [Saturday] night we did finish on the road in a very hostile environment.”

Grantham and Bobo filled in for Richt on Georgia’s weekly media teleconference Sunday evening. Richt was tending to some family business, UGA said.

Not surprisingly, both Grantham and Bobo expressed a desire to have cornerback/wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell on their side of the ball.

“I promise you, I’m going to go in there politicking hard for him offensively,” Bobo said. “… He’s going to get back on offense some this week.”

Georgia (2-0, 1-0 SEC), which remained No. 7 in the media and coaches’ polls, plays a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Sanford Stadium against Florida Atlantic (1-1, 0-1 Sun Belt Conference). Florida Atlantic is coming off a 31-17 loss at Middle Tennessee.

I love watching players like Jarvis Jones. He makes his whole team better. He took over that game last night and simply refused to lose! Plays hard; encourages teammates; great leader and a humble young man. Just a Damn Good Dawg!!!

Once again, two things I really liked. Marlon Brown finally having a good game, and Richard Samuel blowing up that fake punt.

Lame Kitten has got to be kicking himself for making roster room by letting Jarvis go. I wonder what he thinks of that decision now. LOL

Please tell Shawn Williams and Malcome Mitchall to stop acting like idiots, especially when the other team gets seven yards. Show more class and get your head out of your @$$.

All the team needs now is more consistancy on offense. get 3-4 yards on first and second down. I’m sick and tired of 3rd and long. Less running plays up the middle with our smallest tailback too.

Should have thrown the ball more early like they did to start the LSU game last year. I think we would have pulled ahead earlier.

I think Bobo needs to try and establish the run early in the games to calm down the offensive line and get those jitters out.

Some notes upon return from Columbia.

James Franklin 20 carries 25 yards.

Winston Churchill National Memorial was pleasant surprise in middle of nowhere.

Murray 2 games 6 TD passes.

Bulldog haters unite counting on hope that this was sure game we would lose and now saying doesn’t mean anything, we still haven’t beat ranked team.

Mizzou fans and campus and town of Columbia will be welcome addition to SEC.

Auburn making it easy for lingering recruits to choose wisely.

Am so proud to have a Carver High School graduate succeed and flourish at the University of Georgia. Columbus is such a beautiful part of GEORGIA, not Alabama.

Keep the season rolling boy’s No Regrets. Welcome back this week Commings and Vasser. Back in time for the Vols and Cocks, Ogletree and Rambo.

So glad Georgia chose Red as team colors and not god awful Orange or Yellow.

Just Asking?

Mike Bobo better be massaging Jarvis Jones’ feet and kissing his back side, because he single handily won the game for Georgia and saved Bobo’s continuation of calling a vanilla and ineffective offensive gameplan. It escapes me why Bobo is so content with calling all running plays on 3rd and long? Is it just in case a back may be able to break six tackles or is it to just try and gain a few more yards on a punt with field position? I would like to know that answer as I’m sure it frustrates more than just me. Jarvis Jones is a beast, Marlon Brown finally stepped up, and surprise surprise the heart of the team Richard Samuel made one, if not the biggest, play of the game with the fake punt tackle.

Great win for Georgia, but I have to disagree with Top Row Dog about Columbus being beautiful. No offense to any residents of Columbus, but I would not categorize that fair city as beautiful. Bleak might be a more accurate description, and I’m glad I don’t live there. Go Dogs!

Contractor, Not sure which game you were watching or if you are just repeating a common criticism spouted constantly by the flocking sheep of Bobo whiners. Review of stats show we ran 4 times on 3rd down out of 16. Two runs came up short, although 1 of those went 9 yards. One run went for an 11 yard gain and a first down, one run went for 6 yards and a touchdown. Although we were only 5 of 16 on 3rd down, most of those were in first half and 12 of those were pass attempts.

ESPN Stat of the game… 4-for-5. The Bulldogs went 4-for-5 on third down in the third quarter after troubles earlier.

Just the facts please…….. not repeated supposition.

Your last sentence redeemed your post so your at least half a fan.

As a dawg, naturally I’m loving his play on the field, but my favorite thing about Jarvis is his attitude. Loyal. Leader. Disciplined. Work ethic. Role model. Humble. Focused. Intelligent. Classy. Jarvis Jones is a damn man.

How you haters doing tonight? Dawgs won. You hate that too dont you? You thought they were gonna lose. They stroked though. Shut down a STRONG offense without 4 starters on D. Were in better condition and dominated the 2nd half, especially the 4th quarter. Its so sad when your own fans are haters of your own team. NEVER satisfied. Nothing good enough. Poor Tech would LOVE to be in your shoes. They would hire Mark Richt in a heart beat. Hes only beat them how many years in a row now? Like 9 or something?

Let me tell all you haters something else. UGA probably wont lose a game this year. Not if Murray stays healthy. You think Jarvis and Rambo came back to lose a game? They came back to win the SEC Championship. AND let me tell you haters this also. UGA will get better each amd every week and come the end of the year, the UGA defense will be so strong, they will keep UGA in ANY game against ANY team and with the UGA offense improving also in the OL and backs and receivers getting experience and throw in Mitchell in that mix to help tremendously in a BIG game, UGA CAN BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE NATION AT THE END OF THE YEAR. AND throw in the fact that they got SEC championship experience last year, even better chance. UGA defense will be able to shut out anybody or at least keep them under 10-15 points and we can hand with anybody. Bring on Bama or LSU. We WILL BE READY!!!

SO you loser haters….you are going to hate this year all year because the ONLY time you are TRULY happy is when the Dawgs lose or dont do well so you can bark like little itches that you are….and the Dawgs wont be losing. Sucks to be a hater hatin on THE Dawgs this year.

Oh and to all you ignorant Richt haters…..he WILL be getting ANOTHER contract extension AFTER THIS YEAR…….HATE ON THAT LOSERS!

Over/Under on USCe being the next game that haters say we can’t win? Surely Vandy has no line, as last year was close till the end, think more about last time they were in Athens. Didn’t score. The Cocks look vulnerable this year, and may not be undefeated when we play them. Dont be suprised if Missouri goes in to Comobia and gives them a loss before we get our hands on them. If not, theres an epic matchup of top five teams that UGA will win by two TDs. At least. Lets just pray for no more injuries/suspensions , and this could be a very special year!

Also, just say Jarvis continues to dominate, and stays healthy, how long before he starts getting some Heisman talk? He’s almost a shoe-in for the best LB and maybe best Defensive player. Its a 12 game season, can’t wait to see this team dominate :)

Great save from Jarvis, cause Bobo and Murray were a big liability in the first half. The calls were awful and Murray’s execution was worse. I’m really puzzled about the vanilla compressed play calling. Little to no shifting before the play and giving Mizzou 15 seconds to evaluate our formations and from film study just about to know what’s coming. Murray is better I know, but he looked like a red shirt freshman coming off the bench in the first half. Great win and the good news is Richt’s teams usually get better as the season progresses.
