COLUMBIA, MO. – On a historic night for the Missouri Tigers, Jarvis Jones made history for the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs’ decorated outside linebacker stepped up and intercepted the first pass of his collegiate career midway through the fourth quarter of what had been a see-saw game. Jones returned it 21 yards to the Missouri 1, only an official’s review of his dive and stretch keeping him out of the end zone.
No matter. Freshman Todd Gurley was more than happy to take a hand-off at right guard and slam the ball in the end zone, “Old Man Football” style. That gave the Bulldogs a 34-20 lead and provided an exclamation point on what would end up being a 41-20 Georgia victory.
“I actually thought it was a touchdown; they didn’t give it to me,” said Jones, mocking anger. “But you have to take what you can get and we came out of here with a big win. A lot of people thought we were going to come in here and get upset.”
If there was any doubt, Jones would erase it a minute later. His sack of James Franklin caused a fumble, which Jordan Jenkins recovered at the Missouri 5. Georgia’s Ken Malcome dotted the I-formation and ran the ball right up the gut from six yards out to set the final margin with 5:16 to play.
At the end of that flurry, Georgia had scored 24 unanswered points to seize the game in the second half. When the outcome was no longer in doubt, the Bulldogs’ boisterous contingent began chanting “Old Man Football” as the clock ticked down on this historic night. It was their retort for Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, who infamously used that phrase to mock the Bulldogs and their boring style of football.
“We were not trying to send a message,” Georgia coach Mark Richt insisted. “We were trying to win an SEC game.”
The Bulldogs were, however, bent on not letting Missouri send a message.
“We didn’t want them to make a statement on us,” sophomore cornerback Malcolm Mitchell said. “Missouri’s a great team, but we knew they were going to try to build their reputation off beating Georgia and we weren’t going to let that happen.”
Georgia’s late-in-coming domination spoiled what Missouri fans were calling the most anticipated game in their program’s history. The Tigers hadn’t played in a conference other than the Big 12 – or its previous incarnations of the Big Six and Big Eight – since 1907. But they and Texas A&M joined the SEC after last season, and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive was on hand for the coin toss of both games.
“It was real treat for me,” Slive said in the Faurot Field press box at halftime. “In both stadiums, you could just feel the energy, you could feel the euphoria, you could feel the pride and how excited everybody is. These are the third and fourth teams we’ve added to the league in 80 years. So it’s a historic day, and everybody wants to be a part of that history.”
It was a consummate team effort by Georgia. The Bulldogs gave up 371 yards, but only 91 in the fourth quarter. Aaron Murray was off-target early, but finished strong with 3 touchdowns and 242 yards on 22-of-35 passing. Georgia had a few drops, but Marlon Brown and Michael Bennett made 8 catches each, with Brown’s going for 106 yards and a pair of TDs.
Gurley wasn’t the beast he was in the opener with 65 yards rushing, but he combined with Malcome and Keith Marshall for 130 yards, and used a late 44-yard run to get the Dogs out of a hole.
“I’m proud of the boys and the job they did,” Richt said. “Two things we talk a lot about at Georgia, ‘G.A.T.A.,’ or getting after it, and finishing the drill. I thought the guys did a good job of that.”
The game turned in Georgia’s favor on what will go down as a coaching mistake by Missouri’s Gary Pinkel.
The Bulldogs had taken their first lead of the game, 24-20, on an 11-yard pass from Murray to Brown with 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter. On its ensuing possession, Missouri faced fourth-and-11 at its own 35. Pinkel got impatient and called for a fake punt. But it was sniffed out by Georgia senior Richard Samuel, who tackled punter Trey Brown after a three-yard gain.
The Bulldogs took over at the Missouri 38 and could only advance the ball 13 yards. But that was all freshman Marshall Morgan needed to convert a 41-yard field goal attempt to increase Georgia’s advantage to 27-20 with 7:33 to play. Marshall had made a career-best 52-yarder earlier in the game.
“I have been doing this a long time and a coach never calls something that he thinks will not work,” Pinkel said. “When they work, they are good calls and when they don’t they are bad calls and I will take responsibility.”
Said Richt: “Richard Samuel’s stop on the fake punt might have been the biggest play in the game. I know it was the one that made me the happiest.”
Playing in its rarely-used gold jerseys, the Tigers got off to an ideal start in the second half. Leading 10-9 at halftime, the Tigers had to kick off to Georgia. But the mistake-prone Bulldogs continued their bumbling ways and had to punt away after a net gain of zero.
Missouri made quick work of its good fortune. On third-and-eight at its own 32, Franklin hit L’Damian Washington over the middle on a post route in which he beat Devin Bowman to the middle without any safety help. That gave the Tigers a 17-9 lead just 3:12 into the second half.
Georgia responded with an “old man-style” offensive drive. The Bulldogs went 75 yards in 12 plays and converting on third down four times, including five yards on a touchdown pass to Tavarres King from Murray. Because Morgan missed an extra point in the first half, the Bulldogs went for two and converted on a pass to Bennett. The game was tied at 17 halfway through the third quarter.
Missouri answered with a long drive of its own. But Georgia’s defense bowed at the 7-yard line. That’s where they stopped T.J. Moe on a third-down pass. The Tigers settled for a 25-yard field goal and a 20-17 lead with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
Georgia took its first lead of the game on the ensuing possession. The Bulldogs zipped down the field, covering 73 yards in five plays, including a 40-yard reception by Brown. A 23-yard catch by Bennett was followed by and brave grab by Brown over the middle for an 11-yard touchdown. After the PAT, Georgia lead 24-20.
Both teams seemed to start the game a little tight. Missouri bobbled a couple of snaps and gave up a sack to lose 23 yards on its first possession.
Georgia did similarly. After taking over at the Missouri 37, the Bulldogs lost 12 yards in three plays, including eight on a sack of Murray given up by gimpy right tackle John Theus.
Theus got off to a rough start. Starting despite an ankle injury that kept him out of practice most of the week, Theus was called for a false start on Georgia’s second series. It basically resulted in a 40-yard penalty because it nullified a long first-down completion deep in Missouri territory.
The teams finally settled down after that and started to play some offense. Missouri used 10 plays to get down to the Georgia 8 before James Franklin and Kendial Lawrence fumbled an exchange. The ball was kicked around for 20 yards before Georgia’s Amarlo Herrera finally recovered at the 28.
The Bulldogs gave the ball right back. On first down, Missouri linebacker Donovan Bonner was not fooled on a play-action fake and intercepted Murray’s pass for Marlon Brown on a quick slant. He returned it to the Georgia 25.
Georgia’s defense stiffened and Malcolm Mitchell batted away a pass on third and five at the 20. The Tigers had to settle for a 37-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead with 12:03 left in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs blew an opportunity to answer on their ensuing possession. Murray hit Michael Bennett in the hands inside the Missouri on what would have been a first-down pass. Then, on third-and-five, Bennett was called for a false start, which nullified a first-down run by Gurley. Georgia lost five more yards on third and long and had to punt.
The Bulldogs would finally get on the board on their next possession. It came after the officials on the field ruled Franklin had fumbled when Jarvis Jones grabbed his arm on a pass play. The call was overturned via replay, but Missouri still had to punt and Georgia took over at the 41, about 10 yards further away than it would have been.
The Bulldogs managed just six yards. But that was enough for freshman place-kicker Marshall Morgan, who boomed through a career long 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-all with 5:52 remaining in the first half.
The game cranked up considerably in the last two minutes.
Taking over at their own 37 with 2:02 left in the first half, the Tigers needed just three plays to score. Franklin hit Marcus Lucas with a 41-yard touchdown over the middle. The PAT with 1:31 to go put Missouri ahead 10-3.
Turns out that was plenty time for Georgia to answer. The Bulldogs went 71 yards in five plays, scoring on a 2-yard pass to Brown. King had set up the Bulldogs with a 34-yard reception. But Morgan missed the point-after kick wide right and Georgia trailed 10-9 at halftime.
“I feel like after that first touchdown, everybody just calmed down, settled down,” Brown said. “We thought, ‘OK, it’s going to be a four-quarter game. We started playing well and, on the defensive side [for Missouri], they started looking kind of sluggish, not moving around so much like in the first quarter when they were all hyped up. We kept grinding and grinding, and I think we just wore them out.”

Nice win for Georgia. It’s not as if Mizzou is a ranked team, but the historic nature of this game garnered national attention. This is the first time that Coach Richt hasn’t found a way to whiff a game of any real significance in the past few years.
Next up… Beat a ranked team.

Wow! The ‘Dawgs are definitely the powerhouse that their top-10 ranking implies! Too much for us! When you have all your D back, you’ll really be something!
Congratulations, and I hope Tiger fans in Columbia were gracious in defeat and tipped their caps to victorious and celebrating Georgia fans there.

The offensive line showed it’s youth with some mistakes. Dropped passes were key. Can’t blame Murray. I thought he showed toughness haning in. Defense will only get stronger with the return of starters. Good win for our “DAWGS”!

As a Tech fan I must say UGA looked pretty good last night. Good game.
Told ya Gurley would be a good back, UGA fans jumped all over me when I said he was better pick up the Marshall. Marshall pretty good but I think Gurley will be special type back.
Saw Florida also, They are going to be pretty good, TA&M RS-F QB will be real good

Do any of the CMR, Bobo and Murray haters have a fricken clue about football???? I’m convinced they are all Tech fans trying to act like disgruntled Dawg fans. Their “football IQ” indicates significant impairment issues!!! By the way, Richt’s “road” record on opponent’s home fields is around 75%……..a record matched by very few coaches including Saban and Miles. Also, UGa had one of the top 2 offenses in the SEC last year…..pretty impressive considering we were compared to LSU, Bama and Arkansas. I guess that proves that Bobo and Murray are terrible!!! Get a clue dudes!!!!

@BigTime Tech Fan,
Good “civil” post and my comments were not directed at you. You seem to have a clue about football!!! Also, I still think Marshall will be great. Seems like he hasn’t had the offensive line doing a great job opening holes. Stay tuned because my bet is he’ll explode very soon….hopefully against SC!!! Thanks for your positive post.

Speaking purely from a objective point of view, This Georgia team won because of Jarvis Jones and him only. If he’s not on the field, Georgia loses. After all the beating of chests and hot air eminating out of the mouths of the delusional Dawg fans this was supposed to dispel the doubts about Mark Richts regime. If you’re a Dawg fan and you say that you are not horrified after what you saw last night, god bless you. Murray is bi-polar, Grantham is a hot head and Mark Richt needs somebody to put a mirror under his nose to make sure he’s still breathing.,

I don’t see anything objective with any of your comments, just the usual bashing from someone who never grows sick and tired of hatin’ on the dawgs.

PJ, you are entitled to your opinion. We won the game and I am happy that we are complaining about a win and not a loss. I think we will see that Missouri isn’t a very good team. It took a special teams miracle by Samuels (shedding three blockers to make a tackle on the fake punt). and perhaps the best single defensive performance by a Georgia Bulldog, certainly the best since David Pollack to eventually pull away from a team that isn’t very good and didn’t play a very sharp game.
Remember, we were orginally scheduled to play AL. in Tusc. We were LUCKY to get to play Mizzou. Anyone think we could have beaten BAMA last night with that effort?
II am not calling anyone names or saying they should be fired. here are some of my complaints about OBVIOUS errors in judgement by our highly paid coaching staff:
1.) Todd Gurley got 10 carries. If I worked for the AJC as a reporter, I would ask both Richt and Bobo how in the world they can justify that. Does Lattimore get 10 carries for South Carolina? Yeah, if he gets hurt in the 1st quarter maybe. Would Saban allow that to happen? If you don’t want me to complain about the win, please tell me why it makes sense that Gurley got 10 carries?
2.) On 1st and goal at the Missouri 2 yard line with 48 seconds left in the first half and an exhausted Dawg defense…. The clock starts with the setting of the ball because of the first down by UGA. We still have 1 timeout and we snap the ball with 18 seconds left on the play clock, we then don’t attempt a single running play from the 2 yard line, first and goal. We throw two passes and don’t run any time off the clock. We did score, but we did it the HARD way (imagine if one of those passes were intercepted) and we ran no time off the clock. Missouri went down the field in 38 seconds against our exhausted D and they got their hands on a pass in the end zone. Luckily, it went incomplete. Can anyone justify this strategy and clock management inside the two yard line. Does the offensive staff not talk to the defensive coaches. Tell me why it was smart to throw a fade route after snapping the ball with 18 seconds on the playclock?
Why was it smart to have John Jenkins in the game with 2 minutes remaining and Georgia up 20 points? Luckily, his injury wasn’t serious. We have a 3rd string Noseguard that is pretty good. Why so many starters in the game after it was won, especially the defense which had to be exhausted.
We were 0-8 at one point on 3rd down. Some of this was because we threw 30 yard sideline patterns (low percentage passes) on 3rd and 4 or 3rd and 5. Other times it was because we would get 4-5 yards running the ball on first down and then go to the air. 0-8 against the Missouri defense is not a sign of an offense belonging to a top 10 team. It is a sign of ineptness.
Special teams were an adventure to say the least. We have Freshman kickers, so I get that. There will be growing pains. How in the world does Mitchell field that punt that he fumbled. I don’t care how fast you are, a punt returner must first do no harm. Either field it or get out of the damn way. He looked like a Freshman.
The undue pressure put on Grantham’s defense by this offense and special teams was a sin. the defense had to play a game and a half last night with four starters out. Hats of the Grantham’s bunch and especially J.J. for potentially saving the season.

I think the teams that don’t take Missouri serious will get beat unless a few key players got hurt in the Georgia win who don’t have anyone to come in and take their place. If Missouri shows a lack of depth at any position the other teams in the SEC will pound that position all day.

Alabama and L.S.U, and Mark Richt wears a toupee but….thank God for 1980!! Not exactly an S.E.C. powerhouse, their biggest victories come in recruiting and NEVER extends beyond that.

UGA ’s first quarter slow starts have to be solved. The defense looks bad in the first half statistics of both the first two games because the offense runs three plays and punt leaving the defense in bad field position and on the field too long. Murray needs to overcome the jitters in the first quarter and the offensive line needs to come out blocking with fire in their belles to open up good running lanes to gain valuable first downs running the ball until Murray warms up his passing. It is time for smash mouth dirt in your face offensive line play, if the starters cannot do it, then play the subs until you can find 5 Big and tough linemen who want to play and start, if we don’t get better offensive line play, it is going to be a longer season than we had anticipated. The coaches need to devise better pre-game warmup passing drills with the wide receivers so Murray will get those jitters out before the game starts and not waste the first quarter productivity opportunities.

Can anyone understand booboo’s play calling. Every 2 and long its a draw play everytime. So predictable. And why the run more out of the shot gun formation than the pro-I. And why doesn’t girl get to rum the ball more offer? 10 carries for 68 yards. 6.8 yards per carry and a TD. Bobo needs to make better game plans or be fired. I love the multipro scheme but I can tell you what play he is going to call every time. Just my opinion.

Comgrats on the win last night. You’re defense was great even without the 4 missing starters. I’ve watched SEC games for years because for the most part the are crazy competitive games. I also know the game is most important in the trenches for SEC games. So, with that I want to hear some thoughts about MU O-line. Understanding that to start the game we started
LT: A 3 year starter in his second game back from a torn ACL
LG: a true freshman in place of a stater who got hurt in fall camp
C: RS sophomore starting his second game
RG: jounior walk-on in place of of starter hurt in fall camp
RT: starter first game back from knee injury in fall camp
And we ended with our center at LT and a RS freshman at C. So we ended with 2 regular starters and only one in his position.
Also I don’t know how much of a difference just considering JJ and the two beasts in the middle.

@hateidiots…….
The A&M coach’s offense at Houston has been prolific……and A&M has better players than Houston. And the Gators DID shut it down in the second half. And theat redshirt freshman QB……well……..he is very good. You will see when Georgia plays him.
and…….that “middle tier” Florida team is now ranked 18th in the country…….and if the offense continues to improve, with its defense (which is hardly middle tier)…..the Gators will continue to climb that Top 25 ladder. But Driskel has to learn how to read progressions quickly and make quicker decisions in the pocket….for that to happen.

We are a high execution team one penalty one missed assignment and we look weak when we execute we look like a pro team. The guy who got hurt late seemed to be pretty good. But what Missouri will find out is the patched up Offensive line that you mentioned will do okay , especially in the first half against most of the teams except the elite programs but to even beat the mid level teams in the SEC you better have depth so you can play for 60 minutes with kids who are as good or nearly as good as the starters.
Georgia had 8 defensive starters who came back for one more year to see if we could win a Championship . Everyone of those starters will be drafted this year. Because they came back Georgia has the depth now to be able to compete against the best but the thing we lacked last year to compete the entire game against L.S.U.
Missouri did not see 4 of those players. Two of them are nearly as good as Jarvis Jones. Our defense is better than what you all saw yesterday. But in the SEC DEFENSE is everything. Teams like Vanderbilt, Mississippi and Kentucky have had great offensive players but no defense . Those teams will get beat 50 to 17. The great defenses will blitz on every play. Franklin is a great player but Missouri needs a Tailback just as good as Franklin. It will take 2 or 3 years for Missouri and Texas A&M to focus their recruiting on more of a defensive based team. If Missouri wants to try and just out score every team , that will be Okay but the speed on the defenses have proven an offensive based team will not work in the SEC.
If you don’t believe anything else , believe what I am about to say. Georgia is just one little team in the SEC. Eventually the East will be better than the West. When that happens you will play at least 6 six games just like last night . Every other week Missouri will have to beat a potential top 15 team. They just keep on coming. And then if you win your division, Missouri would have to play the West winner.

Agree, Marshall may be fine back, UGA may have a Ronnie Brown Cadillac Williams situation for a few years. Puppy Express instead of Pony Express.
Also Missu looked good, they will play a role in who wins SEC east. They just let the game get away late with some real bad turn overs.
Actually the LB from Mizzu was a beast as much as J Jones, I don’t know why Mizzu would not adjust to his outside rush, it was almost like they wanted him to do it. I would have set on back in motion to chip him or a least make work a little

You know weird things happen sometimes with letting other players step up. SCs QB Thompson looked like he couldn’t complete a pass in HS when he came in against Vandy, and then on Saturday he looked like an NFL QB. I was thinking about how tough Hererra played, and how fast Ogeltree is, and I thought an interesting twist would be to occasionally move Ogeltree to the side opposite Jones. Leave Hererra and Gilliard/Robinson in the middle in certain situations. I’m sure using him in the middle with Vasser would be great sometimes, too. I was just thinking about the pressure Ogeltree, Jones, and our front three could bring….scary.

I loved the game and what an atmosphere… Just got back in town from it late today…. For those that were concerned about the 1st half… You had to be there to experience the crowd that was amped up from the get go…. Loud and boisterous. We all had a great time meeting them and vice versa… Their Defensive Coordinator threw everything but the kitchen sink at us in the 1st half and Murray kept his cool while running for his life. Once we got it to halftime the coaches adjusted things and it was all over as we wore them down with “OLD MAN FOOTBALL”!!! This is a team that will make us proud and only going to get better…. You better get your tickets now or get your hands on some as this will be a special season to remember… I can’t imaging when Alec O. and Rambo get back how nasty the D. will be….

Here to eat some crow and prove that there are those of us with class in Missouri! First of all I would like to thank GA for our first SEC “dance.” There was a lot of “stepping on toes” from both sides of the ball in the early going and in GA salsa’d on our hopes. Secondly Jarvis Jones is a man’s man and I am disappointed in our lack of adjustment to account for him. No matter what colors you wear it was an exciting game (for the first 3 quarters anyways)! Our team will have plenty of film to learn from in the coming weeks and I find myself thankful that the chip has been knocked off our shoulder. I look forward our next tango.

To those who bash “haters”: Our performance Saturday with 12 penalties and 3 turnovers WILL NOT allow us to win against, let’s say, more experienced SEC teams. Just sayin.
Defense played well. Jones practically sealed the win by himself. Offensive on the whole was not well prepared and did not execute well until the last quarter, and most of those 21 points were set up by the defense with amazing field position. Again, just sayin.

Jarvis Jones = David Pollack + Thomas Davis + Boss Bailey
Mike Bobo wasn’t the main problem with the offense. Murray’s inaccurate throws in the 1st half would have put Mizzou in an early hole.
Running the ball, quick strikes to WRs and TEs, and playaction for deeper throws will equal a lot of big wins for UGA. Bobo just needs to call for these plays from the start instead of letting Murray struggle for a half.
