COLUMBIA, MO. – On a historic night for the Missouri Tigers, Jarvis Jones made history for the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs’ decorated outside linebacker stepped up and intercepted the first pass of his collegiate career midway through the fourth quarter of what had been a see-saw game. Jones returned it 21 yards to the Missouri 1, only an official’s review of his dive and stretch keeping him out of the end zone.
No matter. Freshman Todd Gurley was more than happy to take a hand-off at right guard and slam the ball in the end zone, “Old Man Football” style. That gave the Bulldogs a 34-20 lead and provided an exclamation point on what would end up being a 41-20 Georgia victory.
“I actually thought it was a touchdown; they didn’t give it to me,” said Jones, mocking anger. “But you have to take what you can get and we came out of here with a big win. A lot of people thought we were going to come in here and get upset.”
If there was any doubt, Jones would erase it a minute later. His sack of James Franklin caused a fumble, which Jordan Jenkins recovered at the Missouri 5. Georgia’s Ken Malcome dotted the I-formation and ran the ball right up the gut from six yards out to set the final margin with 5:16 to play.
At the end of that flurry, Georgia had scored 24 unanswered points to seize the game in the second half. When the outcome was no longer in doubt, the Bulldogs’ boisterous contingent began chanting “Old Man Football” as the clock ticked down on this historic night. It was their retort for Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, who infamously used that phrase to mock the Bulldogs and their boring style of football.
“We were not trying to send a message,” Georgia coach Mark Richt insisted. “We were trying to win an SEC game.”
The Bulldogs were, however, bent on not letting Missouri send a message.
“We didn’t want them to make a statement on us,” sophomore cornerback Malcolm Mitchell said. “Missouri’s a great team, but we knew they were going to try to build their reputation off beating Georgia and we weren’t going to let that happen.”
Georgia’s late-in-coming domination spoiled what Missouri fans were calling the most anticipated game in their program’s history. The Tigers hadn’t played in a conference other than the Big 12 – or its previous incarnations of the Big Six and Big Eight – since 1907. But they and Texas A&M joined the SEC after last season, and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive was on hand for the coin toss of both games.
“It was real treat for me,” Slive said in the Faurot Field press box at halftime. “In both stadiums, you could just feel the energy, you could feel the euphoria, you could feel the pride and how excited everybody is. These are the third and fourth teams we’ve added to the league in 80 years. So it’s a historic day, and everybody wants to be a part of that history.”
It was a consummate team effort by Georgia. The Bulldogs gave up 371 yards, but only 91 in the fourth quarter. Aaron Murray was off-target early, but finished strong with 3 touchdowns and 242 yards on 22-of-35 passing. Georgia had a few drops, but Marlon Brown and Michael Bennett made 8 catches each, with Brown’s going for 106 yards and a pair of TDs.
Gurley wasn’t the beast he was in the opener with 65 yards rushing, but he combined with Malcome and Keith Marshall for 130 yards, and used a late 44-yard run to get the Dogs out of a hole.
“I’m proud of the boys and the job they did,” Richt said. “Two things we talk a lot about at Georgia, ‘G.A.T.A.,’ or getting after it, and finishing the drill. I thought the guys did a good job of that.”
The game turned in Georgia’s favor on what will go down as a coaching mistake by Missouri’s Gary Pinkel.
The Bulldogs had taken their first lead of the game, 24-20, on an 11-yard pass from Murray to Brown with 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter. On its ensuing possession, Missouri faced fourth-and-11 at its own 35. Pinkel got impatient and called for a fake punt. But it was sniffed out by Georgia senior Richard Samuel, who tackled punter Trey Brown after a three-yard gain.
The Bulldogs took over at the Missouri 38 and could only advance the ball 13 yards. But that was all freshman Marshall Morgan needed to convert a 41-yard field goal attempt to increase Georgia’s advantage to 27-20 with 7:33 to play. Marshall had made a career-best 52-yarder earlier in the game.
“I have been doing this a long time and a coach never calls something that he thinks will not work,” Pinkel said. “When they work, they are good calls and when they don’t they are bad calls and I will take responsibility.”
Said Richt: “Richard Samuel’s stop on the fake punt might have been the biggest play in the game. I know it was the one that made me the happiest.”
Playing in its rarely-used gold jerseys, the Tigers got off to an ideal start in the second half. Leading 10-9 at halftime, the Tigers had to kick off to Georgia. But the mistake-prone Bulldogs continued their bumbling ways and had to punt away after a net gain of zero.
Missouri made quick work of its good fortune. On third-and-eight at its own 32, Franklin hit L’Damian Washington over the middle on a post route in which he beat Devin Bowman to the middle without any safety help. That gave the Tigers a 17-9 lead just 3:12 into the second half.
Georgia responded with an “old man-style” offensive drive. The Bulldogs went 75 yards in 12 plays and converting on third down four times, including five yards on a touchdown pass to Tavarres King from Murray. Because Morgan missed an extra point in the first half, the Bulldogs went for two and converted on a pass to Bennett. The game was tied at 17 halfway through the third quarter.
Missouri answered with a long drive of its own. But Georgia’s defense bowed at the 7-yard line. That’s where they stopped T.J. Moe on a third-down pass. The Tigers settled for a 25-yard field goal and a 20-17 lead with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
Georgia took its first lead of the game on the ensuing possession. The Bulldogs zipped down the field, covering 73 yards in five plays, including a 40-yard reception by Brown. A 23-yard catch by Bennett was followed by and brave grab by Brown over the middle for an 11-yard touchdown. After the PAT, Georgia lead 24-20.
Both teams seemed to start the game a little tight. Missouri bobbled a couple of snaps and gave up a sack to lose 23 yards on its first possession.
Georgia did similarly. After taking over at the Missouri 37, the Bulldogs lost 12 yards in three plays, including eight on a sack of Murray given up by gimpy right tackle John Theus.
Theus got off to a rough start. Starting despite an ankle injury that kept him out of practice most of the week, Theus was called for a false start on Georgia’s second series. It basically resulted in a 40-yard penalty because it nullified a long first-down completion deep in Missouri territory.
The teams finally settled down after that and started to play some offense. Missouri used 10 plays to get down to the Georgia 8 before James Franklin and Kendial Lawrence fumbled an exchange. The ball was kicked around for 20 yards before Georgia’s Amarlo Herrera finally recovered at the 28.
The Bulldogs gave the ball right back. On first down, Missouri linebacker Donovan Bonner was not fooled on a play-action fake and intercepted Murray’s pass for Marlon Brown on a quick slant. He returned it to the Georgia 25.
Georgia’s defense stiffened and Malcolm Mitchell batted away a pass on third and five at the 20. The Tigers had to settle for a 37-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead with 12:03 left in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs blew an opportunity to answer on their ensuing possession. Murray hit Michael Bennett in the hands inside the Missouri on what would have been a first-down pass. Then, on third-and-five, Bennett was called for a false start, which nullified a first-down run by Gurley. Georgia lost five more yards on third and long and had to punt.
The Bulldogs would finally get on the board on their next possession. It came after the officials on the field ruled Franklin had fumbled when Jarvis Jones grabbed his arm on a pass play. The call was overturned via replay, but Missouri still had to punt and Georgia took over at the 41, about 10 yards further away than it would have been.
The Bulldogs managed just six yards. But that was enough for freshman place-kicker Marshall Morgan, who boomed through a career long 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-all with 5:52 remaining in the first half.
The game cranked up considerably in the last two minutes.
Taking over at their own 37 with 2:02 left in the first half, the Tigers needed just three plays to score. Franklin hit Marcus Lucas with a 41-yard touchdown over the middle. The PAT with 1:31 to go put Missouri ahead 10-3.
Turns out that was plenty time for Georgia to answer. The Bulldogs went 71 yards in five plays, scoring on a 2-yard pass to Brown. King had set up the Bulldogs with a 34-yard reception. But Morgan missed the point-after kick wide right and Georgia trailed 10-9 at halftime.
“I feel like after that first touchdown, everybody just calmed down, settled down,” Brown said. “We thought, ‘OK, it’s going to be a four-quarter game. We started playing well and, on the defensive side [for Missouri], they started looking kind of sluggish, not moving around so much like in the first quarter when they were all hyped up. We kept grinding and grinding, and I think we just wore them out.”

GREAT win for the Dawgs! While I too get frustrated with the offense sometimes and wish we were more consistant, especially running the ball, all Dawg fans should be very happy with this win. The Dawgs went into a very hostile environment against a team that was playing, according to them, the most important game in their school’s history, and surivied a bad start and many mistakes to win by 3 touchdowns. Yes, Murray had a slow start, but look at his numbers at the end of the game-good completion percentage (even with several drops) and 3 touchdowns and 1 int. Let’s be proud of the Dawg coaches and players for playing for 4 quarters and finishing the drill.

Since Mizzou ain’t up to the task, and in consideration of the graciousness with which I have been entertained in this forum, and in consideration of the fact that Georgia provided us with the only honest U.S. President since some time in the early 1800s, I will be rooting for the ‘Dawgs to win the SEC East, and a whole lot more!
By the way, here’s a not-much-publicized quote from Abe Lincoln:

I love the “if not for Jarvis Jones” idiots. Reality is he is on our team and thank the lord for that. Also thankful for all the other guys who overcame a lot of mistakes to win an Sec road game by 3 TDs. Can’t wait till we start to gel as all Richt’s teams do as the season goes along.

If you look at this game you will see that Mizzou tried to pull the Boise State techniques by stunting and not showing their defense until the snap – the fact that Will Friend prepared and solved that puzzle is a huge attaboy for him and our young offensive line – as for our D – the spread, especially one like Mizzou’s that has talented players to execute it, is a Bi**h to defend and stop – when you combine all of this with the fact that it was a long road trip and that Mizzou was AMPED for this game and you will see that this game was a HUGE performance by our Dawgs – and don’t forget some of our best players weren’t even there. This game and performance by ANY standard was a stellar accomplishment for Richt and our boys. And I think we can now put to rest the “Murray has not won a big game” BS – this WAS a huge game and I tell you what – there are not many teams in the SEC east that are going to beat Mizzou if they play like they did tonight – depth is their main problem and as the season goes on it may be their biggest weakness – AND, I like the fact that our boys looked fresh all of the way to the end of the game – good conditioning against a team that will run most defenses ragged. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure where you’re going with that, but my point exactly, and yes I did watch the SECCG……had we played 4 FULL QUARTERS, we would have been SEC champs. We had LSU on the ropes, and couldn’t close the deal. No first downs for LSU in the first half. Mistakes and miscues led to our demise there.
LSU was a good team, but not as good as BAMA in the second game (BCSNCG) they played.
We have to start strong vs stumbling around in a fog, and maintain that type of play until the end.
I stand by my statement…..You can bet that Spurrier (because of his total hatred for all things Georgia), Saban, etc, insist on just what I’m suggesting. They won’t let up.
If we are to be considered great, we have to dominate from start to finish…..

All of you idiots who think this was a great win should come out of your mothers basements and look around at the other teams who have championship potential. One thing you will see is that they come to play all four quarters not two of their choosing. Another thing is their talent level is lower than ours. Wonder what makes the diff? Maybe the coach??
And to those of you who don’t want to read what you don’t agree with, log off or move someplace where there is no freedom of speech.

Georgia made some clear mistakes, but I think a lot of the mistakes can be attributed to a true freshman playing in an electric road environment. Theus had multiple false starts and got beat several times but I am guessing he will end up being a really good lineman for us. Bennett’s dropped passes, especially the pass by Murray that was right on the money in the fourth quarter, were very surprising as he is a solid receiver. I hope that doesn’t happen again, because we would have had a big first down on the 35 and Murray probably would have at least gotten us in solid field goal range, if not a touchdown.

Miami has the right to his opinion, but we can sure as heck disagree with him. Missouri is not a great team and Franklin did not do much at all in terms of running the football. He threw the ball well for a while.
Anyways, Go Dawgs!! I’m glad we played big in the fourth quarter and Jarvis Jones is a monster. Does anyone know about Jenkins’ injury?

@Eric……Florida went into College Station and faced a very talented QB and a prolific offense under the new A&M coach…….and completely shut them down in the second half (2 first downs and zero points)…..and when the light completely goes on for Jeff Driskel (learns to go through his progressions quickly)……every team in the SEC will be challenged big time by the Gators…..but you keep on thinking that “Florida is terrible” and Georgia has nothing to worry about when they play them……typical.

There is the game you thought you saw and the one that was played. The offense was terrible. Didn’t convert a single 3rd down play until the 4th quarter. Quarterback was again off target and the O line couldn’t make holes for the backs. The defense and individual players rising to the occasion made the difference.

Atomic, I agree. He wasn’t great, but after that pick, he played well. When he had time last night and his receivers weren’t dropping the ball, he looked great. The difference in the game was our defensive line. The times that they got pressure on Franklin, Missouri couldn’t do anything against our defense. When Franklin had a good bit of time, he attacked the middle of the field.

This was a GREAT win for UGA!!! probably ruined the day for all the doubters nay sayers, debbie downers and haters so it’s expected for them to come on here with the georgia won but lines because after all that gum flapping they ended looking as stupid and incompetent as mr. washington. Heres the reality, UGA played a great game, the coaches had an excellent game plan the kept franklin one dimensional the entire game defensively , and offensively they were solid. yeah yeah yeah hater we know they weren’t perfect and murray could have did this and that and bobo and richt should and need to whatever which is epected to be your rebuttal. so to answer all that look at how the responded to adversity which a good indication of ho good a team is and can be. 1 after going down 3-0 answer score with score of there own which was repeated immediately after goin down again and again an again. 2 when faced with adversity composure is maintained and they continue to execute consistently. 3 when under distress and pressure they lmit mistakes and turnovers. 4 make the right adjustments throughout the game maximising results against opponents on both sides of the ball.5 close games strong!!! UGA did all of this last night in a highly competitive game, in a very hosile environment on on the road and did it with four starters missing. BUT!!!!

Tampa GAtor @ 10:59AM – Right on all counts. I watched the Gators and Aggies from start to finish. Gators showed tremendous improvement over week one. Defense was very strong, especially in 2d half. Driskel actually improved during the game. He looks like the real deal to me. Very athletic. He is growing into the position. Coaching staff obviously made effective adjustments at half time. The offensive play calling reflected a new QB and was managed quite well. All in all, it looks like Florida will be in the hunt for SEC East Title along with South Carolina and Georgia. I think all three teams will continue to get better as season progresses.

Not sure why when a fan points out a fact like Murray played like a D2 QB for 3 of the 4 qtrs, or that Bozo is still a Bozo even though they scored 41 they are referred to as “Haters”….Facts are facts! After 3 years at the helm Murray is a very average QB and I can only assume we have nothing better…Kind of like the Joe Cox and yes Mike Bozo syndrome back in the day….And by the way If it was the same game I was watching I believe Todd Grantham and the D were responsible for quite a few of “Bozos 41 points”….???
The D looked great and they won this game for us! The one thing that was very apparent was no one looked gassed the entire game which was amazing based at the speed Mizzou executed…I wonder if all the conditioning is starting to kick in??? Jones was a beast and Jenkins played like a stud….Another bright spot was Malcome Mitchell….Kid plays tight and is not afraid to lay some wood….D will be back to a non concern in a few weeks and I honestly believe the balance of the season will hinge on the play of Murray and the play calling of Bozo….or the lack there of!!!
By the way, I am not a hater….Just passionate as hell about the Dawgs!!!

Good job Larry! You are welcome on our board anytime. I have been a diehard UGA fan for forty years and am definitely not a hater, but we can’t be satisfied with this victory. Yes i am thrilled we came out of Columbia with a win. Yes we did score 41 points, but it is pretty easy to score when the defense gives you the ball first and goal at the one. Bobo’s play calling is predictable and questionable. Dropped passes and false starts killed our drives. But, it is only the second game. They will get better. This defense could be the best I’ve ever seen for the Dawgs. Let’s just hope Bobo gets better! Carolina and Florida will be tough games, and don’t overlook the Vols. Go Dawgs, Sic’em!

that’s funny! No knock on Florida because I think they will be more competitive and a better team than they were last year and that’s the case with a few middle tier SEC teams but there is nothing prolific about A&M’s offense with a freshmen qb under a new coach in it’s first game of the season against a ranked SEC opponent with a solid D.

The Murray haters need to go back and look at the game on their DVR. He was under intense pressure and did an amazing job considering. His numbers were still good, and we had about five to six easy throws that were dropped. 22-35 with 3 TDs and 1 int is still very strong. Pressure is usually what causes QB mistakes, as we learned from watching our pass defense improve under CTG. A lot of fans don’t get this, and maybe some of the newbies to football are posting the hate? Murray isn’t just a good D1 QB, he is one of the best. Our O line is what has to improve. They have to grow up and improve tremendously over the next few weeks if we want to compete with the big boys this year. They showed improvement–even throughout the game, so that is a positive.

UGA didn’t exactly kick butt as much as they outlasted Mizzou. Both teams did a lot of self-destructing. But anyone who says that Georgia’s D did less than stellar without four starters, is just pain foolish. Actually, reviewing the game today, the O played well, too. The main issue there is timing. As Murray develops a relationship and timing with that line, look out. I really felt like we saw the Dawgs develop into a team in the second half, and the big commentator said it best; this is a team that will grow and improve as the season progresses.
Coolest play of the game: Samuel IV shaking off a blocker and stopping the fake punt… You have to love Richt bear hugging that guy and thanking God it wasn’t another Gamecock moment. LOL
Mitchell is good but needs to settle down a little. It will come. Next week will be good for fine tuning and getting the young players more big stadium experience.

Awesome Job Dawgs! Yes, there are many things that needs to be worked on, but get stronger as the game moves on was a sure sign of what a team can become. last year we would have been doomed. Say what you will about Mizzou, but they have a good team and had extra incentive. Our guys hung in there and took advantages in the second half of what was given to them.
This team will only get better. It’s a much different attitude than last years team. Not saying they are going to win it all, but the improvement was there. I’m ready to get all of our guys back!

Missouri got over half their yards on three plays. We should be able to cut down on the big play success when Georgia is at full strength. I’m not worried about the amount of yards Missouri got. This was a great victory. Murray finally played under pressure from a good team and did not panic and turn the ball over. The one interception was just a good play by the defense. Murray was a very good leader yesterday and I am very encouraged about our success this year.
Bennett had a Jekyll and Hyde day. Very unusual for him . Probably won’t be a pattern. We need to run Gurley 20 times a game but Richt is trying to make three Tailbacks happy. Malcome runs very hard and there doesn’t seem to be much of a drop off from Gurley. Marshall needs to develop the second effort syndrome. Marlon Brown was great.

“We didn’t want them to make a statement on us,” sophomore cornerback Malcolm Mitchell said. “Missouri’s a great team, but we knew they were going to try to build their reputation off beating Georgia and we weren’t going to let that happen.”
If MIZZOU is a great team then what is BAMA and LSU ?
Time will tell, but MIZZOU is under sized and will get pushed around alot ths year. They are not a top 50 team.

Solid win. Bobo remains a liability. The defense bailed him out. He’ll of course get credit for the 41 points but anybody who actually watched the game knows that he was getting absoluely schooled for most of it and had no answer. Gurley needs to get more carries. Please spare me any crap about picking up blitzes and “learning the system.” He is a monster with the ball in his hands and he needs to get more than 10 carries a game. That’s just ridiculous. Defense gave up some big plays but otherwise a solid performance. That Jarvis Jones interception was there all night. They were living very dangerously with a lot of their passes. We probably should have picked off more. I can’t believe the way Mizzou just zips it straight down the middle of the field like that. That’s not Old Man Football. That’s Dumbazz football.
We still have a long way to go but this was a step in the right direction.
