UPDATED: Bulldogs’ fans fanning out all over Missouri this weekend

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. — Greetings from Missouri.

Jefferson City is not where Georgia and Missouri are playing their football game. But this place — the state capital 30 miles south of Columbia — is where I could find a hotel room. But I’ll be driving up to Columbia tomorrow to check out the scene as the Tigers get ready to play host to the Bulldogs in this historic meeting late Saturday night.

UGA’s ticket allotment from Missouri was 6,000 for the game and those, of course, all went to season-ticket holders. But I know even major donors had a hard time getting more than two apiece, so you know it’s a really tough ticket. Nevertheless, past experience tells me a couple of thousand more Georgia fans may find their way inside Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium. I’m guessing the Bulldogs will be well represented inside the 71,000-seat stadium.

There is enough of a presence that the action has spilled over here in Jefferson City. Tonight in downtown, the Convention and Visitors Bureau is holding an “SEC Pep Rally & Street Fair.” If you buy a $2 wrist band and cup, they say they’ll even waive their public drinking law for you.

It’s interesting how Georgia’s contingent is kind of spread out all over Missouri. I think the grand majority of folks are flying into St. Louis where a lot of them are taking in the Cardinals-Brewers game tonight. Others are flying into Kansas City and making that home base. A lot of those folks will drive into Columbia to catch the Georgia game, then go to the Chiefs-Falcons game on Sunday in KC.

I talked to Brian Hoyt of Atlanta earlier today. Hoyt, an engineer and producer for Dickey Broadcasting’s 680 The Fan, is flying into St. Louis today with four of his fellow Parkview High graduates: Steven Berrier, Dennis Hanson, Jimmy Whitlock and Mark Zabrosky. They’re getting in the whole shebang — taking in the Cards’ game tonight, doing the casinos after that, heading to Columbia on Saturday for Dogs-Tigers, then driving on to Kansas City to catch the Falcons-Chiefs. They’ll drop off their rental car and fly back to Atlanta from Kansas City Sunday night.

“It’s the ultimate guys trip,” Hoyt said. “Everybody’s kind of getting married and settling down, so we said, ‘let’s take one more trip.’ It’s one of those things where we just started talking about it and were saying ‘that’d be fun to do’ a few months ago. Then it from from being a joke to, ‘No, let’s do this.’ And now we’re on our way.”

Berrier, the most seasoned traveler of the bunch, is cashing in miles and points for the plane fare and hotels. Hoyt came up with Georgia tickets and Whitlock chipped in with Falcons tickets, so it’s a true group effort.

Anyway, the Dogs-Tigers should be an awesome game on Saturday. We’ll get more into that later.

For those of you still coming this way, be warned: Columbia is not a very convenient place to get into. Flights directly into Columbia are few and very expensive. It’s 100 miles from St. Louis and 125 from Kansas City, so it’s a haul either way.

And bring a light jacket or pullover. Forecast for tomorrow’s game is sunny and 72 degrees but overnight low could get down to 50.

That’s all for now. Check back for regular updates.

In the meantime, I’ll leave you Georgia fans with this from Grandpa Simpson:

What makes the SEC so DA@@ hard?
To all the Missouri fans I welcome you to the SEC. That brings me to the answer to the above question.
Missouri will have no problem getting up for the Georgia game but what makes the SEC SO hard is then you are going to have to play South Carolina, Vanderbilt who is a lot better this year than normal, Alabama , Florida and Tennessee not to mention you are going to have to get up for the Texas A&M game. If you win the East then you will play Alabama again or L.S.U. or Arkansas. IT NEVER ENDS.
In the Big 12 you are use to playing Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska and Texas A&M and that is if they all end up on your schedule in the same year . Actually you probably will only have to play 2 of the above in a given year and maybe one more in a playoff.
The SEC has 5 teams rated in the top 10 . Some teams will have to play all of them this year. What usually happens is two or even 3 of those top 10 teams will lose 2 games early in the season and the dumb pollsters drops them out of the top 25 . This doesn’t mean they aren’t still real good and should still be in the top 15 in the nation but other Conferences only see the team has two loses are are ranked 25TH. Missouri will find out that depth and defense is the key to playing in the SEC. If you don’t have depth and a good defense you will lose 5 to 7 games every year.

When will the ACJ catch-up to other on-line news papers?
Have a blog where you can only have 1 name/ email address and you can REPLY directly to a poster?

It would be nice to not have to read posters you don’t care about like Thomas Brown & his 20 names.

If Vegas knew that Rambo, Ogletree, Cummings and Mitchell would be playing the spread would be a lot bigger. They are counting on the passing of Franklin being able to pick apart the second team defense of Georgia, which will then open up the run. Georgia needs to blitz on every play and key in on Franklin. If someone else beats you then so be it. But Georgia needs to completely neutralize Franklin with speed. Treat it like you were playing Georgia Tech.

I believe UGA last played Missouri in the 1960 Orange Bowl and Larry Rakestraw, QB for UGA, set a long, long standing Orange Bowl passing record, as UGA did whup the Tigers that game.

My UGA alumna wife was born in St Louis, although she grew up in Buckhead and her paternal side family are all MIZZO fans and one trip to STL, we pulled out an old Missouri annual and there was the 1960 score and I pointed it out and they older folks there, sort of hated me. THEY DO TAKE Tiger football very, very seriously.

Go Dogs.

7576DAWG: Thanks for the welcome, and the advice about the tough SEC row to hoe. We’ve heard. Mizzou is missing 3/10 top OL for the year; hance, the expert forecast is for that diminished depth to take a toll as the season wears on. We’ll see. Attrition will take a toll on some other teams, too, I imagine. Meanwhile, one game at a time, brother! Saturday night lights! :>)

I’m here with 6 other TECH fans to cheer on the MIZZOU Tigers. My friends live in Russellville, MO about an hour away from Columba. We’ve got T-shirts with “TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!” which we’re teaching all the Tiger fans to hate Ugag as much as we do. We KNOW MIZZOU will win the game and Ugag fans have no idea what they’ll face on Faurot Field. It will be a glorious night with a wonderful ending with the “Yellow Jackets and Tigers swarming all ’round!!’

I’m by no means a defensive expert, but to me it would only make sense to have someone on this Franklin at all time. Someone assigned to him every play.
Too funny with the hating Jackets on here. Of course if you can’t beat them, pull for a team that just might. I get your pain.

Georgia fans have had to deal with that lack of depth for a few years now. We can stay with anyone for 30 minutes . We hope since our entire defense came back instead of going Pro that we can finally play with the big boys for 60 minutes. Good luck to Missouri I have always respected their integrity as a school and football team.

_______________

If you think UGA is the only obnoxious fan base you need to stay in the hole that you are in. I recall several years back I was with my boy at a UGA/GT game. Just him and I with some friends. Enjoying the game, not getting into any verbal assaults that for the entire 1st half the tech people were throwing at us. I kept telling my, at the time, 9 year old son to ignore. Then a couple of your nerd herd, DRUNK fans (probably because they were losing) starts yelling and cussing at my son because he kept looking back. Just looking back and saying nothing. That entire drunk nerd herd section just stumbled in their place and laughed.
Not all tech fans are like that. I have many tech friends. Don’t play a blind idiot twinkie and say that UGA is the only team with drunk fans. Needless to say going after a 9 year boy shows the class that people like you have. It’s a lot of class, too bad it’s all low!

Welcome to Columbia, Missouri! The in-laws give me one of there season tickets each year in Columbia and this is the one I chose right away. Sure I’m a homer and think MIZZOU will win, but I expect this to be an absolute war. It’s going to be an exciting atmosphere around Columbia, Missouri all day tomorrow. With the game not starting til 6:45PM CDT both teams fans will be out in force for all day tailgating. Georgia fans, I’m confident 99% of the MIZZOU fans you deal with this weekend will be classy and welcome you and probably even sip on beers and tell football stories for hours up and hours tomorrow afternoon only to part ways telling each other good luck. That’s usually the way it is around Columbia, Missouri…with the exception of when Kansas use to come to town. Hopefully by the end of this year many of the SEC fans will be able to say “wow, maybe Missouri is pretty damn good”, but we have to await that outcome. Hope you all have good trips to Missouri this weekend and good luck!

Guys, I wouldn’t get on the Vegas boys. UGA is missing 5 out of 11 starters due to injury and suspensions. Three of the top 8 members of our young O line are doubtful. We have a number of injuries on offense. MO is at home, healthier, and they have a huge point to prove. The only thing Georgia has in its corner is Sheldon’s comments. I think they are likely indicative of what their players think of Georgia. If they are over confident that will help us a lot.

What Mizzu & A&M will learn quickly is everyone in the SEC plays D — even the weaker Teams.
Those that have posted Mizzu has a shot to win the East are crazy!!
Even if they win this weekend, which they won’t, Mizzu will be a beat up football team by November.

@Stuck in Kuwait for this year

You and I see things on the same level, and I believe that the vast majority of our fan bases are like us. We want to project the best of images of our Universities, and our Athletic teams at events like this; however, we have our own group of rowdies who don’t mind blacking the eye of our program with disrespectful conduct. We forgive our own rowdies, so how can we not forgive yours? I am pleased that Mizzou gained its freedom from the Big 12, and proud that it is now a member of the SEC. Welcome to the family!

Say, ya’ know what, this game is building intensity by the minute, and by game time it’s going to have a bowl game atmosphere surrounding it.This is “awesome!” I know what Mizzou is bringing to the quality and tradition of the SEC. The very words: “The Show Me State” says it all, and I just hope my Dawgs will be able to meet and exceed that challenge Saturday night. No matter who wins, may the players of both teams escape serious injury, and walk away with their heads up ’cause….We are the SEC!

Thank you for your service to America; may the Lord bless you, keep you, and bring you home soon.

Here’s an idea.

Since Missouri and Georgia are both in the SEC East and will play each other every year, as a UGA alum I would like to see Georgia Tech booted off our schedule.

They have no concept of sportsmanship and are bitter hateful people. We do not benefit from playing them and it is time we turned our backs on them for good.

Since Missouri does not have an instate FBS rivalry that I am aware of, I think it would be a good move to have the Georgia Missouri game played as the last game in the season for both schools.

It could really become a big time annual event.

The people at Missouri impress me as classy and I think that Missouri fans will find they are treated well when they come to Athens and Sanford Stadium.

Hope the SEC and Missouri and Georgia will buy into the last game of the season thing.

Its good to begin a healthy rivalry with you guys and may the best team win.

I would just like to boot kick Tech off the schedule and play a team with some classy fans than understand good sportsmanship.

All Tech knows how to do is to hate and point fingers.

Face it, we own you on the field. We are 10-1 against Tech in the last 11 games.
