ATHENS – At this point, Georgia’s Mark Richt is starting to sound a bit like a broken record. The Bulldogs’ coach keeps getting asked about the availability of defensive stars Alec Ogletree and Bacarri Rambo, and he keeps refusing to say.
Asked Tuesday if their presence atop the depth chart at their respective positions meant they might play against Missouri on Saturday, Richt said with a wide grin, “I would say I’ll let y’all know when the time comes.”
Both players missed this past Saturday’s opener against Buffalo. Afterward, Richt admitted for the first time they were out due to disciplinary suspensions. He wouldn’t say for how long, however.
Rambo’s high school coach, Alan Ingram of Seminole County High School, said back in March that Rambo and Ogletree had each flunked UGA-issued drug tests and were suspended for the first four games per the athletic association’s marijuana-use policy. Neither Richt nor anyone from Georgia has ever confirmed that report.
Richt was asked Tuesday if he was simply looking for a competitive advantage.
“I don’t know,” Richt said. “I would just as soon not give them all of our business. If there is some uncertainty at all then just like any kind of personnel on either side of the ball, if we weren’t sure about if this guy were playing or that guy is playing it’s just one more thing game day that you have to make certain that your players understand who’s in the game. It could be helpful.”
In the past, Georgia has announced its suspensions ahead of time and still does so in the case of player arrests. Cornerback Sanders Commings (domestic battery) and linebacker Chase Vasser (DUI) were each suspended two games because they broke the law. But Richt was forthcoming only after knowledge of their arrest became public.
Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is glad the Bulldogs are being deceptive about the players’ availability.
“Here’s what I think: I don’t know why you’d tell anybody because it’s not illegal,” said Grantham, who spent 11 years as an NFL coach before joining the Bulldogs in 2010. “Unless everybody is going to disclose all their information, why would talk about your team in that regard? To me you don’t talk about things like that.”
In the NFL injuries and suspensions had to be disclosed by a certain date each week. There is no such rule in the SEC or in college football.
“If everybody’s not going to talk about it and be on the same page, then I don’t think we should say anything, in my opinion, injuries or anything,” Grantham said. “Until it’s a league rule and you have to say something, until everybody plays on the same page, you do the least that you can.”
Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said the uncertainty is not complicating his team’s preparations.
“You prepare for the scheme,” Pinkel said. “Obviously I don’t know if they are going to be back or not. We can’t worry about that, we have to enough things to be concerned about that we have control over. If they play, they play. I don’t know what else to tell you.”
Here’s Richt on a few other things from Tuesday’s weekly news conference:
On whether cornerback Malcolm Mitchell (sprained ankle) will play . . .
“We’re not sure. . . . We’re hoping; we’re hoping. He did not practice [Monday].”
On whether freshman Todd Gurley would start at tailback this week . . .
“We usually don’t decide until Thursday how we’re going to decide who starts. We’ll have a guess-timate by about Thursday after practice, but I would think you’ll see more of the same as far as the guys who got carries. You’ll probably see the same guys getting carries, but it’s just a matter of how many.”
On importance of Saturday’s game . . .
“We don’t want to start out behind. You never want to start out behind the eight ball and getting into a chase mode right off the bat. I don’t think anyone wants to be sitting there at the first game in league play relying on people to help us get to the SEC Championship game. It’s huge. All SEC games do count so much, and the first one especially is big. If you win it, it hopefully creates momentum for you and gives you a chance to continue to control your own destiny in the race to Atlanta. I’m sure everybody is thinking the same way.”

I know the rule says a player must sit out for 30% of the games for a 2nd offense — but do they have to be consecutive? If not, CMR should be selective as to which games they sit out. He needs to only punish those two players and not impact the entire team.

There will never be a uniform drug policy. Do I think there should be? Yes. However, NOTHING is uniform in college football. From facilities, to coach’s salaries, recruiting budgets, academic entrance standards, seating capacities, etc….it’s all different. So why would the drug policy be any different? Richt gonna show Sheldon how to play MAN football. Not punk little BOY football. Sheldon, the JC transfer, played ONE game against a nobody and running his mouth…how good was his offense last year overall? How many wins and losses against INFERIOR defenses compared to what he will be facing this year, particularly Sat night? Yeah, what this MANS offense from the sidelines. The spread is nothing new BOY. We faced BETTER spreads than the one you will bring to the field Sat! We played against Tebow for 4 years. We whip em in BOWL GAMES….
You run that spread Sheldon, you NOBODY and turn the ball over and we will grind out the clock with the 4 horseman, balanced passing game of long, medium and short range, ball control, keep the defense well rested and in that lower humidity. The ONLY chance Missouri has is to NOT turn the ball over. What did they do last year against a good defense? You say we play old man football?! We won the Eastern division in the SEC 4 times snce 2000 and 2 SEC Championships with this offense and SHOULD ahve won the National Championship in 2007. Wait until we got an OL together for a couple years….Sheldon you will wish you NEVER saw the SEC. THIS IS MANS FOOTBALL BOY.
NOT I GOTTA HAVE A GIMMICKY OFFENSE BECAUSE OUR DEFENSE SUCKS AND WE HAVE NO CHANCE OTHERWISE OFFENSE!

Soon as we have an OL together for awhile UGA will be right there with LSU and Bama. Havent had one with any experience together since 2007 when we demolished Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and didnt get the chance that bama got last year. Soon as we do though….Bama and LSU D-lines and the rest of their defense will have to deal with an offense that is better than both of theirs…AND THAT IS A FACT. THINK ABOUT THAT RICHT HATERS. GET AN OL PLAYING TOGETHER AND STAYING TOGETHER FOR 4 YEARS AND THAT IS WHAT HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE STAFFORD WAS A SOPHOMORE….EVEN STAFFORDS LAST YEAR WE HAD MOSTLY FRESHMAN THAT PLAYED OVER WAY THEIR HEADS….GOT TO HAVE A LINE. LOOK AT WHAT BAMA DID WITH THEIRS SAT NIGHT…GIVE RICHT A BREAK BECAUSE UGA WILL HAVE A MUCH BETTER OFFENSE THAN LSU OR BAMA WHEN WE HAVE AN O-LINE THAT IS AS GOOD AS THEIRS AND WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO MAKING THAT HAPPEN…
LOL that BOY said ALL SEC offenses are old mans offenses….Yeah and his offense is for teams that can win when playing football LIKE A MAN PLAYS IT! WHAT A LOSER AND WHAT A RUDE AWAKENING COMING FOR HIM SAT NIGHT! DEFENSE. DEFENSE. THE TEAM WITH THE BETTER DEFENSE WINS. ASK MISSOURI WHO HAD THE BETTER DEFENSE LAST YEAR WHEN THEY LOST ALL THOSE GAMES…..ASK WHO HAD THE LEAST TURNOVERS? UGA WINS 46-33. EVEN WITH HALF OF UGA DEFENSIVE STARTERS MISSING, INCLUDING 2 ALL-AMERICANS IN RAMBO AND OGLETREE AND YES OGLETREE IS AN ALL-AMERICAN WITHOUT A DOUBT….IS IT SATURDAY YET?! SCHOOL WILL BE IN FOR THAT JC TRANSFER WHO WILL REALIZE THAT HE IS STILL AN IGNORANT, ALL MOUTH, KNOW-NOTHING, WHO WILL DREAM TO BE A MAN WHEN HIS LESSON IS OVER SAT NIGHT….
DEFENSE WINS. UGA HAS THE BETTER DEFENSE EVEN WITH IT MISSING HALF ITS STARTERS….

Plus it helps to move up in polls with big road win spanking Mizzou to teach them the lessons.
And that’s why we got to stop listening to namby pamby wimps and pointy heads that tries to punish for having little partying fun. The only reason the NFL gives the details that they do is to support Vegas and other betting outlets in that this information impacts the line. Betting increases viewership and the NFL has known this for years dating back to the days when Jimmy The Greek used to be a mainstay on one of the networks pre game programs. That is until that “off the record” conversation with Connie Chung.
Chip it is clear that you are getting perturbed with the lack of information the CMR is providing but think you need to take this frustration to the AD. This change in policy is designed to help UGA, not Vegas or give the media additional fodder to write about. Wright about what is happening on the field or here is an idea, go do some investigating reporting to find out the details that are so important to you as opposed to expecting ever detail be tossed to you like a doggie treat.

The Point:
Total distraction caused by the players choices and actions: No Other Way to Put It
Ogletree: theft, drug while on team: one game at this point – if so why bother
Rambo: drug use, more drug use – one game at this point – if so why bother
One thing is for sure, our db’s got run over by buffalo, only a slight improvement will be shown it these players return.
UGA DEFENSE vs Buffalo:
Defensive lineman: great talents so big and fat now they cannot move to make a play
Defensive linebackers: great speed to the ball but head up plays they get plowed to the ground
Defensive backs: slow to the ball, out of position, will not come up and make tackles
Very Concerning and totally unexpected
UGA OFFENSE:
Aaron Murray will destroy any hope for improvement in 2012 / checking to pass plays when it looks like gurley should be running the ball

Game Changer,
I get the feeling that you for some reason think that you know anything about football, and I am afraid you are void of understanding the game at all. The DB’s did not get run over by Buffalo. Do you honestly think, that with or without the suspended players on the field this week, that UGA showed it’s real defensive scheme, so that Missouri would have a full idea of what to expect. The Buffalo game was a dress rehearsal and mostly scrimmage for the DAWGS. If they had implemented their full defensive set, Buffalo wouldn’t have gained nearly as many yards as they did. Coach Grantham was inserting guys into the line up to see who was ready to go, and who needs more seasoning on the team. Did you see the normally animated Coach Grantham, during or after the game? No you didn’t and there was a reason for that. He knew by experimenting that they would give up some yards, but he would get a good idea of what he needed to fix this week.
The offense, was routine, and proved a nice success as far as the running game goes, but if you knew anything about football, you might realize that for the most part, they were also finding out where they stood as far as receivers and RB’s go, and allowing the OL, to get their feet wet and continue learning to work as a unit.
You will see an entirely different mindset on both sides of the ball this week, but since you really don’t understand a lot about football, you will probably not notice a lot different.
It is a shame you waste so much time being critical and at the same time, lack so much knowledge about the game.

I believe in letting the coaches do their job, but I don’t understand the benefit Georgia receives by keeping everybody in suspense over the discipline issues. It keeps the spotlight on the problems for an extended period of time, and keeps everyone in the world talking about them, and if they aren’t playing, it is a last minute bump for the opposing team, not us. Even if our players already know, the other team doesn’t. So, Saturday night they get a small momentum pop. Now, if one or both will get to play that would be a bump to the Dawgs.

I think Richt should stick to his principles…if not, then UGA is no better than all the other teams you guys crucify.

What a bunch of bellyaching by grown men trying to act like they know something the Coach doesn’t already know. The season has started, get on board please. Waaa, Waaaaaa, Waaaaaa, geez, give it a break. Is CMR breaking a rule? Is he breaking a law? Did he hurt your sensitive girly feelings by not asking your premission to run his team the way he sees fit? Do y’all conplain about everything at home all the time? Probably not. This blog has become a whineing board for some of you bioches. If we lose, then complain, but at least wait till we lose. Quit falling for all the troll talking points. They hate this program. They hate our coaches and they hate the players and fans. Quit agreeing with them you weak-minded tools…

Like it or not but UGA is just a Top 20 team year in and year out. No not a BCS Title contender, just a decent team with a lot of talent that never materializes into the teams they should be.
The level of play falls squarely on the Head Coach and the attitude he promotes in his program. If the HC is a stern hard nosed disciplinarian father figure that demonstrates a strong command of his program the other issues take care of themselves.
The fan base of UGA has accepted the current coaches for what they and the program as it is under Richt and until either he changes or the administration make a change we can all expect more of the same.

One more thing, stop comparing your continued discipline issues and the way others handle their business. With the history and discipline issues at UGA over the past 5 plus years the standard at UGA is much much different than other programs who suffer their issues. We all saw how players reacted over Richt’s tenure and their follow up actions delivered the hard nosed truth they did not respect Richt and his guidance.

I know the rule says a player must sit out for 30% of the games for a 2nd offense — but do they have to be consecutive? If not, CMR should be selective as to which games they sit out. He needs to only punish those two players and not impact the entire team.
========================================
It is called PEER PRESSURE used to the POSITIVE. The military does it too.
You punish everybody for the INDIVIDUALS mistake and then the TEAM will make sure the Individual gets his act cleaned up.
You can’t Punish the TEAM and not the Individual because the game has to be played. you want to Fix a problem child the best way is to make the Good kids run laps, push-ups and eat slop while the Trouble makers Sit in the A/C, play X-Box and eat steak. The Other players will deal with the Problem child.

I have a close friend(actually my boss) who works as an official and he worked a couple of Mizzou scrimmages and he said that the OL and DL of Missouri looked below average but their skill people are lights out.
Who ever controls the line of scrimmage is going to win and after watching Will’s OLine at UGA I am sure he is really coaching hard this week to create more space as the OL at UGA had some really good plays, some bad plays and a few really poor plays.

Not sure using the misfortunes and illegal actions of your players as a means to deceive your opponents is an ethical thing. What these kids did was wrong. UGA’s D will ge gassed, so Murray had better runa ball control ground game for chunks of time being taken off the clock.

That Richt would attempt to turn 2 apparent drug violations into a competitive advantage for his team sends the message that such violations are/can be beneficial for the team. Winking at the violators encourages more violators.
So don’t be surprised, Coach Richt, when your “student athletes” commit these offenses over and over again. By your hand they’ve learned well.

High today in Columbia is 98 degrees, but they expect a cool front to bring it to about 70 at game time. Advantage: Tigers. MO is used to high scoring shootouts. UGA not so much. High scoring game Advantage: Tigers. Low scoring game Advantage: UGA. Suspensions and injuries Advantage: Tigers. Looks like the Tigers beat us by 10, but hopefully Murray will light the scoreboard up, King will not drop any passes (the kid seems to always be open on long balls), and Gurley will romp through the Tigers like a hot knife through butter.

I’m so sick of Bulldawg nation saying what a wonderful upstanding guy Mark Richt is. Richt is a shark like every other major college football coach savvy enough to swim in bloody waters without being eaten. He puts out a squeaky clean ‘Aw Shucks’ image like his mentor, Bobby Bowden and refuses to discern ANYTHING about the character of the players who play for him.
UGA has a revolving door of guys getting arrested and Richt slapping them on the wrist. Don’t even get me started about the guys like A.J. Green who couldn’t pass high school classes, let alone a college course. I’m sure if the 3rd string snapper had gotten arrested for a DUI, he would conveniently disappear. Just like Urban Meyer….different standards for different skill levels of player. Wonderful ethics there Richt.

Isn’t this Ogletree’s first drug violation? His first encounter with trouble, his freshman year, was due to theft, not drugs. Therefore, according to the policy, he should only miss 10% of total games, meaning just ONE. He did not play against Buffalo. Problem solved. Ogletree will play against Missouri.
Meanwhile, Rambo will miss the next three games.
