ATHENS – On one hand, you have Sheldon Richardson, the Missouri defensive lineman who infamously said he had to turn off the Georgia game this past Saturday because “it’s like watching Big Ten football. It’s old-man football.”
Then you have Jon Gruden, the former NFL head coach and current lead analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Football. He says he loves watching the Bulldogs’ offense in action. As for that spread stuff Missouri does? Not so much.

Before he became an analyst with ESPN's Monday Night Football, Jon Gruden earned a reputation as an offensive-minded head coach at Oakland and Tampa Bay.
“I like what Georgia does offensively,” said Gruden, who was on the broadcast crew that called Georgia’s game against Michigan State in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2. “I look forward to getting their tapes. . . . When you get Georgia, you get a lot of good stuff. You’re gonna see audibles, two-back play-action. You’re going to see an array of personnel groupings and formations and different ways of attacking. I like what they do at Georgia.”
Those two philosophies will collide this Saturday night in Columbia, Mo., as the Bulldogs visit Memorial Stadium to play Missouri in its first SEC game. The Tigers and Texas A&M were approved to join a newly-expanded, 14-team SEC last winter and officially were chartered into the league on July 1.
Over and above their long history and association with the Big Eight and Big Twelve conferences, the Tigers are coming from a different place philosophically. Coach Gary Pinkel’s teams are known for utilizing a spread offense to produce big numbers. Virtually every one of Missouri’s school records for points and yardage have been established during the era of Pinkel and his offensive coordinator David Yost. Routinely the Tigers have finished among the top teams in the country in total offense, including this past season when they were 12th at 475.5 yards per game.
“There will be some four-receiver looks and five-receiver looks,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “Sometimes the quarterback will be the only one in the backfield when they snap the ball. Their goal is to spread you out, but they want to run the football, too. A lot of their run game does come from their quarterback, but they do give it to their back in the backfield a good bit and run the zone-read type stuff like everybody else runs.”
The spread offense – and variations of it — has been hot trend in college football the last several years. It gained in popularity after Urban Meyer brought it from Utah and used it to win national championships at Florida in 2006 and 2008.
Gruden doesn’t care for it.
“These teams are in a no-huddle offense and they’re trying to snap the ball before the defense is ready as many times as they can in a game,” he said. “They throw bubble screen after bubble screen and funnel screen after funnel screen and they run the read-option and that’s about it.”
Gruden said such offenses do little to prepare their players for the NFL. He said Georgia’s pro-style offense, by contrast, is why you see so many of the Bulldogs’ players getting drafted early and having success at the professional level.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford credits a lot of his early NFL success to offensive concepts he learned in three seasons at Georgia. (Photo by Scott Boehm/Getty Images)
“They’ve had the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft in Matthew Stafford,” Gruden said. “My brother [Jay Gruden] coaches A.J. Green and he was accomplished enough to come into the NFL and make the pro bowl as a rookie. Cordy Glenn was a first-round draft choice. Knowshon Moreno was a first-rounder.
“It’s because they run a pro-style, two-back offense, which is really unheard of in a lot of places these days. They’re committed to slamming the ball at you. They can get into a one-back set, they can use the no-huddle, they throw the ball down field. I think the battery there of Mark Richt and Coach [Mike] Bobo is excellent. They’ve got an excellent line coach, too, [Will] Friend.”
What makes Gruden’s comments particularly interesting is they run contrary to what a lot of fans think. A vocal segment of the “Bulldog Nation” has been complaining for years about the play-calling and game-planning of Bobo, the offensive coordinator.
Gruden, who has worked with Bobo at some clinics in recent years, doesn’t get that.
“I think the guy’s an excellent coach,” he said. “I think he’s vastly underrated. That’s just my opinion. I don’t think you can argue that there’s been a lot of production and Georgia has won a lot of games the last decade. What has Aaron Murray done? He’s thrown, what, 60 touchdown passes in two years? That’s disgraceful isn’t it?”
Stafford was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2010 NFL draft. He passed for 5,038 yards with 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for the Detroit Lions this past season. He said he owes a lot of his early success in the NFL to the training he received at Georgia.
“Our system here is similar to what we did at Georgia; a lot of the same concepts and just how we go about it,” Stafford said. “Being under center and being able to play in a pro-style offense in college benefited me a lot. That was a big part of my decision to come to Georgia.”
Stafford said he stays in close touch with Bobo, exchanging text messages weekly and talking football over the phone.
“I love him as a play-caller and as a coach,” Stafford said. “I had him in his first couple of years [as play-caller] and I think he’s gotten better every year. I watched them last year and I thought they were moving the ball great. Obviously Aaron had a great year. I’m excited to see what they can do this year.”
Bobo said he doesn’t pay any attention to the criticism he gets from fans. He said he wouldn’t even be aware of it if reporters didn’t occasionally ask him about it.

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, he with Aaron Murray, has a strong reputation inside football for developing quarterbacks. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
“We’re in our hole and we’re in here grinding and working,” Bobo said. “We really don’t get caught up with anything like that, good or bad. I think if you’re doing your job you can’t really look at the positive stuff or the negative stuff. It can affect you either way. You just want to do the job to the best of your ability.”
Bobo said he believes he is a better coordinator and play-caller than he was when he first took over those duties from Richt in 2006.
“You learn what to look for and how to go about your week and the organization of it,” he said. “I just remember early on you felt like there wasn’t enough hours in the day and you weren’t going to get everything covered. I’m very fortunate to be here with Coach Richt, who’s been a coordinator and has a great staff. I think we work well together. It’s just about managing time and preparing for games and getting ready for each week.”
The system Bobo is running was designed by Richt. He has been coordinating offenses since the early 1990s when he helped lead Florida State to 14 consecutive Top 5 finishes. At the beginning of that stretch he had the Seminoles running a version of “the spread.”
“We called in the ‘Fast Break,’” Richt said. “This was in 1992. I know there’s a lot of people who think this spread stuff started a little while ago. We were doing a lot of that in 1992.”
But Richt eventually settled on a multiple pro-style offense. He said he prefers the versatility and “physicality” of it.
“It’s sound fundamental football, you know?,” he said. “I think the more that people spread the field, the less that they’re able to handle the power running game. Sometimes things trend to being spread and out in space, but sometimes when everybody works in that direction they forget how to defend some hard-nose football.
“We just believe in what we do, I guess.”
As well they should, Gruden says, criticism be damned.
“First of all, every coordinator in every town I go to is under siege by the fans and bloggers and websites and talk radio,” Gruden said. “But those people don’t represent everybody. . . . I think there are about 20 new coordinators in the NFL this year. Just to make a point, that’s a tough job.
“You’re going to be criticized, sometimes justifiably and oftentimes unjustifiably.”

Georgia’s problem isn’t the scheme. There are several problems the most serious is predictable play calling. Georgia also fails to empower the QB. In both college and pro ball the successful teams allow players on the field to make decisions for themselves instead of constantly looking to the sidelines. Bobo should not be calling plays–Murray should!

This article is misleading, in that it takes “a vocal segment” of Dawg fans to task for criticizing Bobo’s (and Richt’s) offensive scheme.
The scheme is fine… in fact power football is fantastic in an era of smallish d-lines built to chase around mobile QBs running the spread. Blow ‘em off the line, etc.
The problem is the playcalling within the scheme. Show me 4 quarters of consistent play-calling by Bobo and I’ll show you some Nevada swampland. Bobo never lets success get in the way of his script.

The problem for Tech is, they cannot score when they can defend, and they cannot defend when they can score.
If their defense is as good as shown last night, they will be a good team, because they usually can score a ton if they give their opponents one week to prepare.

Gruden rocks but I’m not sure I agree with him on Bobo. I know our offense is very much like the NFL and it prepares guys for the NFL, but is it the best offense to win college football championships? That’s the question and I have my doubts. We seem to get physically pushed around up front by the best defenses. Our offense is not physical at all. Our offensive line cannot match up with an LSU or a Bama. They just can’t. So, we may be running a lot of fancy schmancy formations that football nerds like Gruden have a good time talking about, but it isn’t getting us any hardware. That’s just the truth.

I’m not sure the scheme is the problem this year. My concern is that Bobo never seems to call for a sustained running game. The Dogs will have some success on the ground and then he’ll call 10 pass plays in a row. And the bulk of the pass plays are slowly developing ones where Murray has to chunk it 40 yards or take a sack. It wreaks of desperation and/or impatience. I’d like to see a sustained power running game, particularly now that we have the backs for it, and more screens and quick hitting passes.

“I love reading what most of you ‘offensive geniuses” think. You guys really should call Michael Adams and see about getting hired.”
This is an incredibly dumb comment and a tired argument. Football is a results oriented business. You either win or you lose. While I may not be qualified to take Bobo to task on the nuts and bolts of his job, I am perfectly qualified to look at our Win-Loss records and question the job he doing based upon that. The fact remains that we have not won any championships since he became our offensive coordinator. Not only that, we have failed to win any big games since he became our offensive coordinator. Those are facts that do not require any coaching experience to state. Moreover, I may not have Bobo’s coaching experience but I do have a healthy functioning set of eye balls. I can see our offensive line getting its jock handed to them by all the great defensive fronts that we face. I don’t need a Phd. in meteorology to tell me that the sky is blue.
You are dismissed.

@Josh I think he called a pretty consistent game last week we scored 45, had 2 dropped TD passes and 2 more overthrows to open receivers, Murray overthrowing or the receivers dropping the ball is not Bobo’s fault his job is to get the right played called so the receiver gets open and he did. Anyone who complains about “play calling” just does not understand football as it is today and is showing your ignorance. A great percentage of the plays are changed at the line of scrimmage in keeping with what the defense shows. If you want to complain about the plays, criticize the QB, not Bobo.

Love Coach Richt and Coach Bobo…they are doing a great job building men…my concern has always been Georgia’s ability on offense to quickly make in-game adjustments…Coach Bobo’s play-calling appears too predictable at times and, they seem reluctant to slow the pass rush down with RB and WR screens (particularly to backs out of the backfield)…and with the addition of Marshall and Gurley, both of whom seem to have good hands, screen passes would not only slow down the rush, it would provide these guys room in space to bust big plays! Also, LOVE the football and effort Michael Bennett is showing on EVERY play…really making opposing defenses work and never take a play off…that will wear on a defense in the fourth quarter…Go Dawgs…GATA !!

Look, Mizzou scored 62 points, but 28 of that came from the defense and another 14 off of punt returns. So all in all, their offense scored 20 points against a Div.2 team. That’s “high octane”? As long as UGA doesn’t have the turnovers or the special teams breakdowns, I think they’ll thump Mizzou pretty good. Central Florida doesn’t have the offense of defense that UGA. UGA ran a vanilla defensive scheme, because they didn’t have to do anything else. I think you UGA fans don’t have a thing to worry about. JMO

For a lot of the time the play calling by Bobo is good.
BUT
When you run a sequence of plays and go right down the field and score and then the next time you get the ball Bobo changes everything and we go 3 and out , we as fans go “WHAT THE HE@@ “. Why didn’t Bobo stick with what is working. Most coaches don’t make any changes until half time ,so if what you where running worked one time it will probably work again but you won’t know unless you try.
Last year in one of the games Bobo ran Thomas up the middle for no gain . On the next play he ran Thomas up the middle for no gain and on the third play he ran him up the middle for no gain. Another time he ran Thomas up the middle for no gain, then threw an incomplete pass and on 3rd and 10 he ran Thomas up the middle for maybe one yard. If the other team has the middle covered don’t run a 5′7″ tall running back up the middle.
That’s the type of Jekyll and Hyde decisions that drive us fans crazy.
As Spurrier once said if it works he will run it all day until you prove your defense can stop it.

@7576DAWG
You have a point, however I don’t really question play calling until your in a critical situation late in a game in a one or two possession game because outside of that, any play call is genious if it works. If we run Thomas up the gut for no gain on first and second for no gain, and then run it on third and bust a 25 yard run (see Richard Samuel @Arkansas) then everybody says ” wow they must have seen something upstairs and attacked it. What great playcalling.” I’m just in general a player’s guy, I tend to lean more on the players have to get it done whatever the play is. Spurrier could run the same play 20 times in a row, but the players have to execute, or the play doen’t work regardless of the call

I think we do run some spread. I know we try to trick people a lot. It seems that what we do is less suited to our level of talent than what Alabama does with the same type athletes. We’re throwing halfback passes (which I do like) at Buffalo while Alabama lines up and shoves it down Michigan’s throat. I have said on a number of occasions that Bobo calls plays that has receivers running open downfield at lot …. but Murray hits a low percentage of them. The knock on Bobo is that he inexplicably will leave something that’s clearly working for something that doesn’t work. Texas A&M a few years ago for example. He seems more interested in balance than in what is actually working on the field.

7576Dawg, what about the bowl game against MSU. Richt and Bobo put the dawgs on the proch with 3:30 to go in the game. Didn’t even try for a first down. Same in OT relying on Walsh to make a FG to win when the guy was 50/50 last year. Just lacked the killer instinct to put the game away and keep pounding the ball down the field. Haven’t seen a full 60 minutes from these coaches the past two years. Sure if we are behind then it’s gang busters but if we have any type of lead its cruise time.

So, the players are more ready than others when they get to the pros. While that is great, our object should be to win games at Georgia and this offense and Bobo’s play calling has not been very successful at doing that.

Gruden’s comments should not be taken lightly. This is a great staff at UGA who run a system designed perfectly to take kids to the next level, and the kids know it.
While I have been critical of Bobo at times, I have always liked the system they run at UGA. Its a perfect fit for UGA and the type of players they typically are able to recruit. They have been able to recruit players like Stafford and Green because of the system, and yes, Bobo’s coaching. Whatever you may think of his playcalling, Bobo is an excellent QB coach.
I think most of the criticism comes from the desire to see a National Championship at UGA. Everyone wants that, but the deck is stacked against UGA in the polls. You saw that in 07 when they got voted down for not having a conference title. That didnt matter with Alabama last year because the Tide can get the votes, UGA cant.

None of you “FANS” have a clue of what you are talking about. According to the polls UGA should win every game and score evertime they touch the football. That’s not reality….for any school at any time in history. With the obvious exception of GT’s 200+ point win in the 30’s-40’s.
A lot of those up the middle runs into the crowd are setups. They aren’t meant to bust the big one (it’s great if they do though). Do a little homework on what these men make their living doing 6-7 days a week, 12-16hrs/day. They aren’t stupid they see the same things all you Captain Obvious’ see. What you call a failure may be getting the exact result it was intended to have regarding opposing defenses positioning.
When a boxer goes to the body, he knows it will not result in a knockout. But it will have an effect on the opponents ability to defend his chin.

Just be ready and play good ole sound football and do the SEC proud with your welcome of the neophite to the league! I just hope Rambo, Cummings and Ogletree are real proud of themselves for letting the team down! DAWGS gotta win without them which will prove so much more without some of the strength of the team! Don’t get me wrong with my example. This year we have three stud Tailback’s so I want to see a lot of running, especially Gurley. Along with the running though we don’t need to under utilize Conley and Bennett. Both are play makers and don’t drop very many passes. I think sometimes Murray is too slow in deciding what to do. The offensive line can hold off the defense just so long before they get a sack. That is not bad play calling. You just have to give the defense credit for a good job. It puts the offense in the hole when Murray loses 7 or 8 yards when he could have thrown it in the stands. If Murray will eliminate 50 % of the sacks and 70 % of his turnovers Georgia will have a great year. Don’t beat yourself and the play calling will look a lot better.

Bobo has done a good job since he took over. Gruden’s comments are great indpendent verificaton of that. The man knows more about football than any one that posts on here which is why he was an NFL Head Coach that won a Super Bowl and is considered one of the most informed and intelligent football analysts on television. To debate with him simply advertises one’s own lack of football knowledge and insight. .

For those of you worried about Mizzou’s 20 points on offense. Please remember it was pouring rain for half of that game. After Mizzou went up 28-0 in the first 8 minutes of the game, combined with weather conditions, there was not much of a reason for Mizzou to force the issue on offense. I am looking forward to a good football game with your Dawgs.

It takes a TarHeel to come onto our blog and provide some perspective. It’s the new-ness of the team to the SEC that has everyone with their draws too tight. Tell me how Mizzou has historically stacked up against Texas and Oklahoma and Nebraska for that matter? Why people think a middle-rung Big 12 team can step into the SEC and all of sudden the SEC needs to worry is beyond me.
Talk to me after the this weekend, then after the season and let’s see how relevant Mizzou is. Also, food for thought. If Buffalo wins their remaining games, how bad will UGA look for only winning 45-23?

@Left Coast. There were 5 offensive touchdown scored with a missed pat. That would be 34 offensive points scored. 28 scored on defense and special teams. None of that equals 20 in case you didnt see the game like I did, because I was there see the attached link for the box score.

Totally agree with the comments “power running game” and Will Friend can coach an O line. Georgia is committed to running the ball. If you think not then look a the O line and 2 deep roster, then look behind them, the FBs + depth, the RBs + depth. Then look at the TEs. Those guys can block, and you make a mistake thinking they can not catch the ball. The schedule today and the teams you face require a power running game and depth. Every player there is see a lost of reps, and the RBs and FBs that is good. None of those guys want to go into the second with a beatup body and dead legs. That was a huge issue for the Dawgs last year on the O side of the ball. They maybe young and inexperienced, but I think the Dawg offensive coaches like their squad of offensive players.

That last part didn’t make me feel better, Dawgfan64.
Buffalo only had one punt return (thank goodness) but it went for 30+ yards.

I get just as frustrated as many others do with Coach Bobo from time to time, but I do not think his play calling is the issue… AND I know he is a great QB coach (just look at what he did with Q. Carter, then Greene). I feel like our issues boil down to 2 things: first, the man leading the program has to demand excellence & motivate. From my seats, the team often looks flat and rarely look like they expect excellence from themselves. I just feel like the players lately love Coach Richt, but don’t respect him as anything more than a good man. I have a hard time believing that the players view him like Saban, Stoops, Petersen, or even Kiffin & Paul Johnson’s players view their coach…My view from the cheap seats is that they should fear him a little bit, but I’m sure I’m wrong in thinking that… Secondly, our OL stinks. It has really stunk for the last four years, with glimpses of potential from time to time… I’m not sure how we fix it, but I know its a problem.

UGA does not play Old Man Football. They play Big Boy Football. You know like they do in the highest league the sport offers…the NFL. Of course to play that way you have to have the right players and coaches. It takes an amazing mix of speed, strength, athleticism and smarts. It will be interesting to watch a team try the spread in the SEC with non SEC caliper talent. 225 lb+ LB and DE’s running 4.5’s has a funny way of negating spreads. FLa and AUb have done it successfully with recruits form the south but I’m not sure they bred those caliber of athletes in Missouri.

Gruden is 100 percent spot on with his comments. I said it in a blog the other day, but the NFL exposes what you really were in college when you take away the creampuff schedules some play, the gimmick offenses and the media hype machines. What was that UM QB that was talked up a few years ago? Can’t even remember his name because the NFL exposed him as a scrub.

Old man likes old man football. News at 11. Pro Style football is fun to watch at the NFL level because they have the speed and skill to make it entertaining. At the college level its just boring. I do not know what to expect after last weeks game. The defense started out horrible.. The offense missed a bunch of TD opportunities. Missouri will exploit our suspended secondary. Missouri’s crowd is going to be in the game. Uga does not play well in a hostile stadium. I pray that the coaches and players were all looking ahead. The heat should have been an advantage for the dawgs last week. The players looked out of shape and winded. Let’s face it; it takes 3 games for CMR’s teams to get in shape and in rhythm.

all this praise about UGA’s system is completely missing the point. Yes, we know UGA churns out NFL caliber players; but, it’s the results that are substandard, which tells me that we’re mismanaging the system. When i saw UGA was ranked 6th, i just laughed in disbelief. Over the last 4 years, UGA has beaten 1 top 10 team – guess which one….yeah, TECH in 2009 (that one shouldn’t even count) UGA is 1-8 vs. top 10 teams since 2008…how bout let’s win one over a top 10 team before we start seeing Sugar falling from the sky?

Hey idiots…..the OL has been getting pushed around for a few years because most all of them have been NEW every year! Have you not noticed that the OL has been having tremendous turnover every year?! Heck it seems like it started in Staffords last season. We havent had 3 guys play together for 2 or more years….it seems like forever and freshman after freshman starting or playing significantly. Thats all about to change the next few years. I hope Dantzler can just stay healthy. The rest of them too! With the backs(havent had none since Moreno)and QB’s and reeivers then next few years, with a VETERAN OL leading the way, UGA can get their first SEC and national championship.
Should have won the NC in 2007 but UGA didnt get the shot Bama got last year….HADNT HAD AN OL SINCE!! YOU ALL KNOW THATS BOTH IS TRUE SO STOP HATING ON RICHT. BEST COACH IN UGA HISTORY. WAITED FOR A CANT LOSE JOB WHERE HIS OFFENSE HAD NOT YET BEEN DEFENDED WITH DEFENSES LESS TALNTED AND DC’S LESS TALENTED AT A SCHOOL THAT GETS GREAT RECRUITS AND SAID YEAH….I CANT LOSE THERE! MEYER WIL DOMINATE THAT CONFERENCE FOR THE MOST PART, ESPECIALLY WITH PENN ST OUT THE LOOP…HE DIDNT GO TO A SCHOOL IN THE SEC DID HE? COULD HAVE BUT DIDNT DID HE? I WISH MEYER HAD STAYED AT FLORIDA BECAUSE THAT WAS GOING TO BE A UGA WIN MOST EVERY YEAR WITH HIS FOUND OUT OFFENSE….YOU GUYS ARGUE AWAY WITH GRUDEN ALL YOU WANT….

Lilburn, the TE were covered, that’s why Murray took so many shots downfield. Buffalo played 7/8 up front all day. Then we lost #1, #2 RT and they were blocking the rest of the day.
Plus I think Coach Bobo was just refusing to show anything. But he typically has TE’s ranking pretty high in the league in terms of pass receptions.

To the football genius who said the qb should be making all the calls from the line not the o.c. is a freaking idiot. Just bc peyton manning does that does not mean a 18-23 yr old could do that. what is the point in an o.c. then. What about the yrs the kid only plays one yr or two yr. You got to think about this yr in and yr out just bc murray might be here four yrs does not mean the next one will. It is so hard for a college football player to audible at the line. It usually takes them two yrs to learn the play book and you want them calling the plays at the line. They got chemistry2 and physics and everything else on their mind too which most of yall forget all that. These are not professional athletes and just bc their body looks like it does not mean their mind is anywhere near a professional. Almost all QB’s in college look to the sideline and it never hurts their draft stock. Sam bradford always looked over there and in fact the two times he hurt his shoulder that is what he was doing and he nor the line never audibled to pick up the weak side blitzer who crushed him causing him to have shoulder surgery. These young QBs have enough on their plate. Thats even more stuff yall could criticize them about why did murray call that and this bla bla bla bla. The blog is filled with Nick Sabans only problem is no one has found yalls talents yet. so keep criticizing amateur athletes and look at Bobo’s numbers no one in the history of UGA has racked up more points.

My biggest gripe against UGA’s play calling is for some odd reasons it appears we struggling to get our playmakers enough touches, especially in big games. If these players are truly big time, then let them show and prove. Don’t get to 3rd and 15 and you’re doing a play action fake like someone is respecting that…..their not!!!

Why all of the bitching about LSU,Bama and Florida?
They out recruit UGA every year so they should have better teams. Simple, better recruiting better team, Bama is loaded and deep they get 5 stars UGA gets 4 and 3 stars. UGA is the under dog we have to coach them up and stay healthy because of depth problems. Until UGA wins big games recruits are going to go to Bama, LSU and even Florida and SC.. Why? because they are young and dumb and think winning is everything. Just think how good T-Bow could have been if he was a pro style QB. He was really underrated because of the spread he worked out of at Florida. It worked good at Florida but not in the Old man football.
