ATHENS — If Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson thought his comments about Georgia or the SEC would bait the Bulldogs into a war of words, he was sadly mistaken.
In fact, Georgia defensive end Abry Jones wasn’t even aware the comments were made by a player until the media informed him Monday evening. Jones initially “thought it was fans posting stuff,” and didn’t have a reaction to Richardson saying he turned off the Buffalo/Georgia game Saturday because “it’s like watching Big Ten football, it’s old man football.”
Jones was more interested in learning what “old man football” entailed.
“We play our football,” he said. “I don’t know what you’d classify as ‘old man football.’ This is college. I don’t know many people over the age of 23 playing football in college, so I don’t know what ‘old man football’ is.”
At Missouri on Monday, Richardson was held out of media day, with team spokesman Chad Moller saying that Richardson “earned himself a vacation.”
Coach Gary Pinkel said “I think he just got carried away a little bit, but I handled that internally.”
Wide receiver Justin Scott-Wesley laughed at the characterization of his team playing a geriatric brand of football. He was more surprised that Richardson took a shot at another conference.
“He said it was like Big Ten football, and I was like, ‘Wow, he took a shot at the Big Ten,’” Scott-Wesley said. “[But] football is football. You can’t get caught up in all the hype. Any team can win any day. We’ve just got to go out and play ball.”
Other players said placing too much emphasis on Richardson’s sound bite takes away from the things the Bulldogs have to accomplish if they want to beat the Tigers on Saturday.
Rush defense, for one. If Georgia is to put a damper on Missouri’s SEC debut, slowing the Tigers’ dual-threat quarterback James Franklin is imperative. After allowing Buffalo signal-caller Alex Zordich to gain 89 yards on 14 carries Saturday, Jones acknowledged the miscues the Bulldogs committed against the Bulls.
“It’s not something we wanted to happen, but seeing the simple mistakes we made, we kind of presented an opportunity for him to do that,” Jones said of Zordich’s rushing success.
When pressed to define what he meant by the “opportunities” the Bulldogs gave Zordich, Jones replied, “Not rushing in the proper rushing lanes, and then he had an opening to step up, and then he had space to run.”
The problems Franklin presents aside, Jones knew his fair share about Missouri, rattling off Tigers of recent vintage — quarterback Chase Daniel, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, among others.
Jones relishes being able to welcome Missouri to the SEC.
“I think us playing Missouri doesn’t really take away any of the excitement,” he said. “I think it adds a little bit more, seeing that it’s their first year in the SEC. … It’s a different team, but I think the same atmosphere, the same excitement is still in it.”
Etc.
Running back Ken Malcome’s left hand was bandaged, but he practiced without limitations Monday. He said he expected to play Saturday. …. Wide receiver Marlon Brown (hamstring), cornerback Malcolm Mitchell (ankle sprain) and running back Richard Samuel (hip contusion) were all limited but practiced. … Those listed as “out” for practice included offensive linemen Watts Dantzler and John Theus with ankle sprains.

Missouri hasn’t done anything yet to warrant a comment on this. Although Spurrier’s comment about playing UGA early was accurate. There usually are some key players suspended early on. This time Missouri gets to take advantage of that.

Win on the field….and the talking takes care of itself….well except for the trolls we could beat Mizzou by 40 (not that that is likely) not give up a sack or a first down and they would see a subpar effort, bad play calling and want the staff all fired .

If i were Coach Richt,
I would call a team meeting and assign each player a box of tissues and tell them to carry it with them all week and on the plane to Missouri because if we don’t come out a play GA football we will need them on the long flight home. I would then post the Missouri players comment about old man football everywhere. i would talk about it in the meetings, on the practice field, i would text it to the players everyday. i would then get someone to buy a funeral flower arrangement in UGA colors and send it to the Athletic department(and say it’s from a Missouri fan, and place it right in the middle of the room for all to see.
Then when it’s time to play ball i will ask them are they ready to form their own identity yet because it’s us against the world until you do.
Then i will tell them i expect a full game of OLD MAN GEORGIA FOOTBALL and let them loose!

There is actually (at least there was in 2004 and 2005) a bulletin board area that the players walk by through the training room where articles are posted…
Also, on the squat rack floor and above some other pieces of equipment there will be changeable mats with the upcoming opponent’s logo on them for motivation while working out….Trust me, they all see those comments!

In “SEC World,” it would seem that all that would need to occur would be for UGA to go up there and INTRODUCE Mizz to BIG BOY football (old man or not). This SHOULD be like one of those bowl games where a traditional power goes up against the Chuck n’Duck or basketball-in-pads–whatever you prefer to call it, and administers a lesson in Southern Smashmouth.
Let’s hope that’s what happens. Injuries, suspensions, whatever; UGA’s squad should be better than MO.

Missing Rambo and Commings really showed this past Saturday. Both replacement players missed assignments and tackles. Defense played lethargic except the the third quarter. One thing we can not do is over pursue or Franklin will burn us. Stay in your rush lanes and man up. I am sure CTG will have them ready for probably the best QB we will see this year.

Remember Boise’s spread? That was early, but it didn’t turn out too well. Moore couldn’t run much better than CMR. Franklin is big, fast, and he likes to run. It is going to take a great performance to beat them, I think. If we play like we did Saturday we could lose by three TDs. D has got to get back to end of year form, and the O has to score a lot of points. We didn’t handle runners well all year and the one dig on CTG’s D was that we were weak against the spread. Whether founded or not, the Tigers are going to check our secondary’s oil all night.

I am truly concerned about this Saturday’s game based on what I saw from the defense against Buffalo. I am not here to bash the coaches or players and won’t. What concerns me is the Mitchell could very well be limited, who knows what is happening with Rambo and Ogletree, and Commings is already out. We allowed 90+ yards to a quarterback at Buffalo and the one we are about to face looks at that type of yardage on a consistent basis. Our D-Line got pushed around for a solid half against Buffalo. Our offense looked VERY inconsistent. Our O-Line is already banged up. Murray looked VERY inconsisent on his throws. There is no room for error in the SEC and I saw a lot of them on Saturday. Heck, the GT defense held VPI to 20 points last night IN BLACKSBURG and we gave up 23 to Buffalo in Athens???
There are several things I would like some of you die-hards to comment on. I know who you are and I know who the trolls are….
1) Did we even gameplan much for Buffalo?
2) How vanilla was our offensive gameplan?
3) Will Rambo and Mitchell both be back in the secondary this week?
4) Is Murray going to be “over-hyped” at the start of this game?
5) Will the offensive line be more cohesive in the second game? If so, will the tight ends show up?
6) In my opinion, we did not “Fly to the ball” against Buffalo like we did last year. We look somewhat tentative. Is this because of the relative “newness” of Connor Norman and Corey Moore? Shawn Williams was almost a no-show!
7) Is all of this mute because we played Buffalo and no real takeaways can be made from playing an opponent like this?
I look forward to your insights….
GO DAWGS!

BKing, that is a really good point that I noticed this morning too. Why did UGA move down in the poles but OK stayed right where they were. Why is OK in the top 10? We didn’t have a great game, but we put up 45, and on top of that, in the third quarter, I don’t think we even allowed a 1st down! So, I really think if anyone should have moved, it should have been OK with what should have been a LOSS against utep, who is probably not even as good as buff. Can anyone explain that to me? Is there so much bias out there for OK that they blow and they still get top 5 votes? Is Chokelahomo the next NOT-er-Dame?

32, it has been described in many terms, including spread by Michigan State last week. Chameleon is another favorite. They do a lot of weird stuff. Similarities are that they both throw a lot of high percentage passes out of a shotgun with 4-5 receivers. They do look conventional, too. My point was that I think they will try to do what BSU did to us. Moore was 28/34 last year against us, with Boykin.

The guy we need out there more than anyone in my opinion is Malcolm Mitchell. We’ve got other good receivers if Brown couldn’t go, but after Saturday if it clear that without Mitchell and Commings our cornerbacks have a lot of work to do. They are listed as “out” because they couldn’t practice at all. That doesn’t mean they are out against Missouri… at least I hope not.

1. we ran very little if any Cover 2 and correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think we ran and Zone Blitzes.
2. Grantham played 13 true or redshirt freshmen in the first half to try and build depth.
Our defense was very vanilla and while we still gave up way more than TG wanted, there’s nothing to panic about on that side of the ball. I think it was more about knowing we could out athlete Buffalo and come away with a victory without giving Missouri much to look at or game plan for.

Exceptional talent being coached by mediocre talent…never works. Bobo is not creative; throws the ball around via Murray like AJ Green is still out there somewhere. You are spot on. I don’t think Grantham was trying to set his guys up for any ego deflate, But he was for sure forcing them to simply beat the guy in front of them. He never “called” a thing to help them, and I’d bet he was privately very thankful he DID get to chew them out at halftime.
The first half showed Buffalo was capable of moving the ball, which to me…….. makes the starters giving up ONE 1st down in the entire second half a pretty impressive adjustment. And it’s not like they had to pull out page 14 of the playbook to do that.

Kingdaddy, I think what caught up to our (second half’s) towards the end of the year was the lack of a legit running game, and eventually the Defense ran out of gas, SO even though this was a different situation….it’s still having to make an adjustment to a physical situation. They did and I think that is a very good sign.
I can hear Grantham now: “Get over it, and just outplay the man. Line it up and just do it. Don’t be looking over at me to bring any help cause it ain’t happening!”

We ran a very, very non-complicated scheme. There was nothing to it. An average defense could have learned what they did in one week. UGA respects Mizzou and were not going to show them anything. I really don’t think that they were worried about the point spread of the game.
For those that want to think the same defesne will appear Saturday night with the SEC opener, go ahead. It will be a totally different look to the defense. Still, Mizzou will be ready and they will have many other wrinkles as well. This is going to be a nail bitter. Look forward to it. Go Dawgs!

Hope Bobo eats up the clock a little better this week to keep the Defense off the field and to keep their offense off the field as much. Buffalo held the ball over 32:00 mins. We had it a little over 27:00 mins. We should be able to control the clock better, but I don’t know if Bobo cares. He loves to throw the ball. I don’t want a shootout. I want to run the ball to set up the pass and keep their offense off the field…

Altamaha, I think that’s a valid point. I also think our lack of depth wore us down as well. While our secondary clearly isn’t deep this year, I think our d-line should be deeper than last season. Also our offense wasn’t on the field long at times and therefore like you said, they ran out of gas. I kind of think this is why Georgia was able to have success later in the game against the Gators. They were on the field a lot more than our defense was and they got tired.

@kingdaddy –
I agree in running the ball as much as possible. With the possibility of 2 guys being out or at least not at 100% on the O-Line I have a rotten feeling this could turn into a shootout. That would not bode well for us. It will be about ball control.

Kingdaddy’s right gtbob…after last night’s performance I think I’d change my name if I were you…of course you probably would just as soon not think about it so I expect to see you around here for a while. Tell us, when Georgia handles Missou Saturday, are you gonna be here or just lie low?
I do think tat the flanker pass to Marshall was a wrinkle that I wouldnt have shown even if it didn’t ‘go’.

To state the obvious, Georgia’s running backs should be good this season, but to run the clock they’ve got to block better than they did last season. I don’t know how good Missouri’s defensive line is, but Gurley will have a tough time running if he doesn’t get much help. Go Dawgs.

Bob will be here regardless of how Georgia plays, because he will always be ready to downplay our chances against any opponent coming up on our schedule. The other haters aren’t as persistent… they will shut up more if we beat Missouri and South Carolina. The Auburn fans shut up in a hurry when we beat them last season.

Don’t get me wrong. I think we have an awesome passing game and I love the pass. I thought when we had the lead,we could have played keepaway a little better with a running game that was working and a couple of under-utilized TEs.(where was J.Rome?) Lynch was a monster. So was our FBs.

It’s also what LSU did to us. We had no running game, and LSU adjusted to the pass in time. Our best shot was to force the type of game it was, but when We didn’t convert those 10 more points in the first half, LSU was able to stick to running the ball. (as opposed to having to make up score) then Just wore em out.

Do the UGA coaches even have the sense to look at their recruits’ and players’ tweets? If they did, they might learn a thing or two about character and intelligence – or the lack thereof. Most of Richt’s guys are low-class jerks, and it shows in their tweets.

I think Buffalo kept the middle of the field pretty crowded, so our TE didnt really have much room to operate. On the other hand Murray did a great job reading that and thats why there were so many shots downfield against the man converage.
I’m 2 RTs going down further defined the roles of the TE as well.

A good OC takes what is offered. Bobo has to take our line into consideration in his gameplan. Now, Gurley was ripping some pretty good chunks out of them and didn’t seem tired to me. MARSHALL was chomping at the bit. I say give it to them until their Defense shows they can stop them. If we have a lead, then we should try to deney them the ball. CMB took a lot of deep shots. I thought Wooten made a great pass that should have been 6…

Accross the wide Missouri,
If you aren’t a jealous techie . . . , you may score 34 or more on our D, what with all our future NFL players suspended.
But, is Mizzou’s D is better than last year’s SC and Auburn defenses?
It takes a good D to keep us to 24 . . .

Don’t worry, Mizzou.
Just go talk to Boisy fans and just remember do not spill your beverage in the laughing fit you will have when the ACTUAL UGA team shows up on Saturday instead of the behemoth of football domination hyped by the UGA homers.
Talking with Boisy fans last year was hilarious getting their reaction to the actual UGA squad which ran out on the field after the delusional hype by the usual suspects. They simply were LTAO that they were scared of playing the “greatest team in football history” and then had uncontrollable fits of mirth at the actual team which ran out on the field. Don’t get confused about the lack of similarity between the actual UGA team on the field and the hyped behemoth, there are no hiding supermen waiting in the locker room, that IS the actual team.
Just don’t drop your beverage.

And who was talking about a “mute” point…? Seriously? I’m looking forward to a close firs half Saturday, and then Mizzou jackin it up in the 2nd half. GA has never had to play 80+ snaps/game on defense before but that’s what we were used to in the B12. Long flight home for you all. Enjoy Columbia, eat at Shakespeare’s Pizza while you’re in town. All the trash talk is good fun, but truth be told, we are really excited to be in the SEC and look forward to many big games like this one.

Mizzou seems to know the SEC pecking order. They’re aware the go up against a middle of the pack East team. They have seen C. Fla; Colorado; Michigan St and others go up against these same old Dawgs and come away with “W”’s. Now if they were about to play Alabama or LSU, then I would question their sanity. They fully understand the pressure is on UGA.

I have a very bad feeling about this game. This team has not shown the ability to win a game like this in quite a while. They have a lot to prove to win me over right now. We don’t have a killer enough instinct to win these games here lately. Have the defense is descimated, and the offensive play is offensive.

I actually think mizz can win the east. The east is terrible. You guys are forgetting mizz plays big boy football too. Just because the sec has won the last six championships, not that uga has anything to do with that, doesn’t mean they are not used to going up against solid teams every week. You folks need to realize mizz can beat the teams in the east. You puppies better step up or mizz may step in and win the division first try which would make sec look bad.

indianman: georgia will show missouri what sec football is about
___________________________________________
We have some idea what SEC football is about, since we have an all-time winning record against it. What we’ll find out Saturday is what Georgia football is about, and what Missouri football is about, over the span of exactly 60 given minutes. (Teams play football games, conferences do not.) Mizzou is competetive, even in the SEC.

Any “real” Dawg fan is a little nervous about Saturday, and the Buffalo game didnt make it any better. With that being said, I feel like the Mizzou trash talk is a little premature. Regardless of what your “all-time winning record” may be, this is your first year actually playing in the conference. It will take a big day by our defense but I think we can get it done! Personally, I’m excited to have the newcomers, I think it only makes the conference stronger… but to the fans of Mizzou and A&M, the rest of us have been here for a while and have proven winning histories in the toughest conference in the country… Welcome to “old man football” and best of luck!

My my, what is all the consternation about?
Your Dawgs are ranked SEVENTH. Tigers are not even in the 25. Our top RB is not suited.
Yet I hear the doubts.
If your defense is what I have heard it is, what the polls say it is, ya’ll can rest easy it will be your day.
BUT if not, then buckle up because “old man football” may not prevail on Saturday nite.
And thanks for having us in your conference. It’s great to be a part of the SEC and in time we hope to get to the top ten as well!

The Facts…
Of the seven Eastern division teams, only two claimed a No. 1 ranking at some point during the past five seasons: Florida got there in late November of 2002. And Mizzou made it to No. 1 on Nov. 25, 2007.
Mizzou is 53-21 over the past five seasons. That’s one fewer win than Texas, and only four fewer wins than USC and Alabama. A lot of reputable and even heralded programs haven’t won as often as Missouri since 2007; the list of teams with fewer victories includes Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida State, Michigan and Notre Dame.
