Missouri player: UGA plays ‘old-man football’

Missouri does not enter the SEC shyly. Quite the opposite, based on comments by one player.

According to an article in the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune on Sunday, Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was asked after the Tigers’ 62-10 victory over Southeastern Lousiana Saturday night if he watched the Georgia-Buffalo game on television earlier in the day.

“I watched the game. I turned it off, too,” Richardson was quoted as saying. “… It’s like watching Big Ten football. It’s old-man football.”

Then this: “If we execute, nobody in this league [the SEC] can touch us. Period.”

Missouri, which officially became an SEC member on July 1, opens play in its new league by hosting Georgia at 7:45 p.m. Saturday in sold-out Memorial Stadium.

Georgia coach Mark Richt laughed when informed, on his weekly teleconference with reporters Sunday evening, of Richardson’s comment.

“’Old-man football?’ Well, I don’t know what he meant by that,” Richt said. “But bottom line is, we got to get after it and do what we do well, and they’ll be trying to stop everything we’re trying to get accomplished.”

The game provides multiple challenges for Georgia, not the least of which will be the emotion associated with Missouri’s much-anticipated SEC debut.

“It’s a huge game for them, no doubt,” Richt said. “It’s a huge game for us, too, though, because we’ve got our goals. And they’ve got their goals.  Shoot, to me, it’s the biggest game of the year, no doubt. … It’s a monster game.”

Being the visiting team for Missouri’s SEC opener “is not the best draw,” Richt added. “But it is what it is.”

Aside from the sure-to-be-charged atmosphere, another major issue Georgia will face: Missouri’s spread offense, led by dual-threat quarterback James Franklin, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound junior who last season passed for 2,865 yards, ran for 981 yards and accounted for 36 touchdowns (21 passing and 15 rushing).

“It’s a problem,” Richt said of defending Franklin. “A quarterback who can run well is a problem. … And they’re going to spread you out. They’re going to get you in a lot of four- and five-wide looks. … It’s a space game, and space is the enemy of the defenses.”

Franklin had surgery on his shoulder in the off-season but reportedly did not have any problems with it in the opener against Southeastern Louisiana, an FCS team. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 131 yards and ran six times for 39 yards.

Comparing Missouri’s opener with Georgia’s performance in its 45-23 victory over Buffalo, “it looked like [on film] Missouri’s boys played harder than our boys played,” Richt said. But he added that the Bulldogs “probably played as hard we could” considering the heat and humidity in Athens.

Etc.

As of Sunday’s teleconference, Richt said he had received no updates on the status of any of  his team’s injured players. … Richt on Connor Norman, a former walk-on who started at safety against Buffalo: “Overall, Connor did a good job. I can think of one play where he missed a tackle out there in space, but just about every safety in America is going to miss a tackle here and there when you’ve got too much space with a back.” Richt said Corey Moore “continues to push hard for playing time [at safety], but right now we think Connor is more ready to play.” … As expected, Richt stayed mum on the status for the Missouri game of suspended players Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree. “We’ll know when the time comes,” he said. . . . Despite Ken Malcome’s hand injury and Todd Gurley’s huge opening game, Richt wasn’t ready to publicly commit to the freshman Gurley as Georgia’s primary running back for this week. “Well, he’ll definitely get the ball, that’s for sure,” Richt said.

Yep, Big Crimson, if that doesn’t get the dawgs fired up I’m not sure what will. Mizzou didn’t need tO go there, and hasn’t earned the right to either..

St richt and all your other cute names, how do you know I’m on here all the time unless you are too, lol. Also, why are you on here now. I’m not here to be liked by trolls and tards or you. You feel the need to come in here on a regular basis and make fun of Dawgs that aren’t even talking to you, but I’ll be your huckle-berry. What school do you like? A grade-school? Jr. High? Better go to bed little boy, it’s 10:00, your bedtime…

We played the Buffalo game like an NFL Preseason game. Our coaches absolutely showed
as little as possible. Also I hope Missouri keeps talking crap all week. We tend to do better when
our opponent is overconfident. UGA has to jump on this team early and not let up. I think we are a better team the Missou hands down, the question is whether we play like it. Richt please let Rambo & Ogletree come back next week.

@St Richt:

CB # 19 Sanders Commings and LB # 33 Chase Vasser are both suspended for the Mizzou game.

LB # 9 Alec Ogletree and FS #18 Bacarri Rambo are both in the hands of M. Richt and it will be very interesting to see how Richt handles this situation…. if he holds them out, he could end up shooting himself in the foot again…. If Richt lets them play it will make him look as he values football over what is morally right.

I believe Rambo sits and Tree will play.

Being a Gator I was hoping that the Dawgs would slip up against Mizzou however because of one no brain, dead from the neck up player well GEORGIA STOMP A MUD HOLE IN EM AND WALK IT DRY!! I guess Pinkel has no control over his players I believe their D line goes about 260 the average SEC O line is 300 plus lets see how they like old man football when their line is sucking air after being pounded on for awhile. This is how you get disrespected when you consistently come out and underachieve. Nobody talks about Ala. or LSU like that. Richt constantly defends the poor play of some players. If they are not getting the job done, put them on the bench. Connor Norman was a joke on the field and he needs to let Grantham decides who will be playing and why can’t UGA cover TE. This has been a problem over the past few years.

Did CMR just admitt that a mobile QB is hard to defend? By the way, the Missouri DT was right, if I can predict Bobo’s plays, other experienced defensive coordinators can too. The Alabama game showed just how far UGA is from the top tier teams. I see at least 3 losses this year, maybe more….

Old man football? Don’t you know Missouri’s coach just cringed when he heard his player had said that! Funny. Well, Georgia I hope you guys go to Missouri next week and introduce them properly to the SEC and show them what they have gotten into! It certainly is not old man’s football.

Hahahaha, seriously?! No one can beat you?? You guys will be lucky to beat Georgia next weekend! You may have a good quarterback, but that defense is soft and your team will now be playing against some big-time defenses. I hate to break it to you, Richarson but being a pretty good team in the Big 12 doesn’t get you anything but average in the SEC. I can’t wait until you guys play Alabama laugh. RTR.

I have to admit I was never one happy about expanding Missouri into the SEC East. Just doesn’t sound right. I don’t think Ga played inspired football yesterday. I think it is hard to when you are playing a Buffalo, etc. But thanks to a really stupid quote by the Missouri player….I look at this game differently. Being the first SEC game for Missouri….I hope Ga takes it to Missouri and shows this young man what SEC football is all about.

Missouri’s defense is average, if not pretty bad if I remember correctly. I think the game will be a shootout but Georgia wins 34-31. Franklin has a big day running but in the crunch can’t throw it well enough with Jarvis Jones in his face.

Few teams are as good as Alabama and LSU. When you win national titles, you get better recruiting and have more depth. I think Georgia will be fine this year, they just won’t be great like some of their fans are predicting. If no one else gets suspended they are probably going to win the SEC East. I’m sorry, but I’m not sold on South Carolina’s offense without Jeffery. They don’t have any receivers.

Um, it has been a while, but unless you are talking about beating a top-5 team, here are some:

2006 against Auburn on the road. Auburn was ranked in the top 10.
2007 against Florida. Florida was ranked high before that game because of Tebow.
2008 on the road against LSU.
2009 against Georgia Tech (when they were ranked high. Obviously they were overrated.)

If Missouri beats Georgia, it will be because Georgia shot themselves in the foot with suspensions or because Murray turned the ball over too much. Missouri is NOWHERE close to being an elite team. When they play good defense against SEC teams, then I’ll give them some credit. I don’t see that happening because they are from the Big 12.

I agree. I think Georgia is a little overrated, but Missouri is just not that good. Last year they lost to Kansas State, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Oklahoma. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were pretty good, but the other three weren’t that good. So I don’t know why everyone makes such a big deal about them coming to the SEC. Same with Texas A&M.

Here is the prob. UGA is basically the only school in a state that produces I think the 4th most NFL players. So, UGA pretty much gets the pick of the litter. So since there are better high school players in GA than there are in AL and LA then it must be coaching. Bring in the WV coach and put CMR on the road!!!
