Malcolm Mitchell (R) sprained his left ankle in Georgia's walk-through practice on Thursday, meaning Damian Swann (5) will get the start Saturday at boundary corner (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
ATHENS — Yet another defensive starter is going to miss Georgia’s opener against Buffalo.
Malcolm Mitchell, who was moved from wide receiver to cornerback due to attrition in the Bulldogs’ secondary, has been scratched from the game as well. The sophomore from Valdosta reportedly sprained an ankle in Georgia’s “walk-through” practice on Thursday. That’s according to UGA, which closes its practices to the media on the Thursdays before games.
“I can confirm that he sustained a left ankle sprain in yesterday’s practice and will not play in tomorrow’s game vs. Buffalo,” Georgia spokesman Claude Felton said on Friday afternoon. “No projections at this point on his availability for next week’s game.”
No details were provided on how Mitchell actually injured his ankle in a walk-through practice.
Mitchell was slated to start at boundary corner for the Bulldogs. His absence makes him the fifth defensive starter expected to sit out the opener.
Senior Sanders Commings, the regular starter at that position, is suspended for the first two games due a domestic battery conviction in February. Outside linebacker Chase Vasser is also suspended for two games due to his May arrest for DUI. Inside linebacker Alec Ogletree and Bacarri Rambo are expected to miss at least the opener due suspensions for teams rules violations. UGA has never confirmed nor denied that Ogletree and/or Rambo is being disciplined but has declined interview requests for the two players since March when it was first reported they failed surprise drug screenings conducted by the UGA athletic association.

If we don’t have him vs. Missouri, we could very well lose that game. We already won’t have Commings. I guess this means Damian Swann will have to step up and do his thing. Wouldn’t you know it? The LAST practice before the game.

Guess this means that our front 7 will have to get after the passer even more. Our defense is hurting in the secondary with so many stupid decisions and now this. Why can’t we just be full strength? Every time we have a bit of hype, we do something to mess it up.

Probably got board and was racing with one of the running backs. The coaches probably thought it was good fun until he turned his ankle. If he can’t practice next week of play in the Missouri game it won’t be very funny then.

So I guess our starters will look like this now:
DE: Abry Jones
NG: John Jenkins
DE: Cornelius Washington
OLB: Jarvis Jones
ILB: Mike Gilliard
ILB: Christian Robinson
OLB: Ramik Wilson
CB: Branden Smith
FS: Corey Moore
SS: Shawn Williams
CB: Damian Swann

Good thing Shawn Williams kept his head on straight this offseason or we wouldn’t have a secondary to field vs. Missouri. Against Buffalo it shouldn’t matter, but we need all hands on deck vs. Mizzou. Damn, it’s ALWAYS something. Either uneccessary injuries, or stupid decisions off the field. Something always happens.

And it’s all happening on the defensive side of the ball. The offense has had a cool offseason. No problems over there. It’s on the defense where we’ve had suspensions and injuries. Offense seems ready to go and will put up 50 points tomorrow.

Could it be that UGA doesn’t want to tip their hand for Mizzou? Sounds kinda fishy that he ’sprains’ his ankle during a walk through…
It may be exactly true because one would think he would need ‘live’ reps against Buffalo, but you UGA is defenitely less forthcoming with information since McGarity arrived.

Wow. That’s incredibly bad luck. No need to push it against buffalo fellow Dawg fans, get him healthy for Missouri. Hell, our 3rd team could be Buffalo. That said, there could be a silver lining here. Some of the younger guys are going to get allot of reps against an inferior opponent. Im interested in seeing Sheldon Dawson and Cory Moore. I think people forget how highly tauted Damian Swann was coming out of HS. Thats the thing, gone are the days where we are only 1 or 2 deep. Grantham has this thing fine tuned and we have 4 stars all over the place on defense. We;re getting there on offense too but its taken longer, especially the Oline (Theus was a good start).

Our defense is good enough to dominate Mizzou all day long. I mean literally shut them down. The only problem is our defense will be watching the game on TV back in Athens. ———————————————————————–
There’s a big difference in having a sprain where you hold a guy out for the first game against a weak team so that he should be good to go in week 2 versus having a healthy player and sitting him out just to play “mind games” for week 2.
It’s bad enough when a player is focusing on the second game before the first is played but it’s much worse if the coaching staff is doing it. Missouri isn’t that good of a team and UGA should win it but if you’re having to play mind games before you get past your season opener then that’s showing a lack of confidence.

Mitchell pulled his hamstring last year and missed about 3 games. He was moved to defense this year for the start of the season to fill in for suspended players. The bad thing now is he want get any live action at cornerback aganist a lesser team before the first SEC game at MIssouri. Good luck with that.

State of The Georgia Bulldawg Nation
Some of you will not agree with this, but It is honest as one can be.
15-20% of UGA fans Think Richt is no longer getting the results they want( BCS runs)
20-30% of UGA fans Think Richt needed to get rid of his Offensive Coordinator
99.9% of UGA fans think Grantham was the answer.
50-60% of UGA fans realize that if Georgia does not win the SEC this Year it will be their last chance for a couple of years with the amount of players graduating, leaving for the NFL after the season is over.
20% of the UGA fans think that getting to the BCSCG is really in their grasp.
80% of SEC fans think that somewhere along the line that UGA and CMR will choke on a game they should win.
The facts are that UGA is loaded on defense, their OL is their weak link, their QB will have to make plays each week and not turn the ball over in order for UGA to win the three games they do have that are semi-tough.
The UGA nation will need to understand that with certain teams that play tougher schedules throughout the country will jump UGA once the season starts if ANY form of weakness is exposed in the first 3 or 4 games.
In the end, most fans are taking a wait and see approach to UGA and most fans outside of UGA think UGA is beatable if their running game is not there, even with 4 and 5 star running backs pouring out of the backfield. Defense wins championships, but the offense has to be able to keep the defense off the field.
The other weak area is Kicking, but UGA has always had great kickers going back to the Dooley Administration. When everything is going bad for UGA the Kicking game seems to always be the bright spot( with the exception of 2011).
Good luck to your dogs, and stay healthy my friends.

we obviously have a lot of naive fans of the game of football. Of course Malcolme Mitchell is fine and dandy, Richt is holding him out of this game in which we are 37 point favorites, because the depth at corner is thin and he wants as many fully ready players for week 2 at missouri. An actual, serious opponent…not Buffalo. Why would he risk playing any of the starters against Buffalo? SEC East Commish, Corey Raymond replaced Ron Cooper as DB coach at LSU. Raymond is an alum who played for the Giants and Lions after LSU and was DB coach at Nebraska before returning to LSU in the Spring. Cooper was a great coach and I think he’ll do well in Tampa. Raymond, according to the players, is more of a technician, and that’s just what our young DBs need. We’ve got two young guys, Mills and Collins who will be holding down the LCB and nickel spots. Thankfully, our early season isn’t as tough as last year’s, so they’ll have time to get some experience before conference play.

your percentages are horrible and borderline ignorant, along with the crying about schedules considering they change EQUALLY throughout a given time frame. I’ll be looking for you when we do get to go to baton rouge and have a game with bama in the same season while your breaking up the egg bowl.
I do agree Vandy is no push over but I also will mention how much losing your D-coordinator was exposed last night as well as what you will see going forward. It will resemble what occured when Mullen left for Miss st. with UF.
I do hope you enjoy your next 3 (cupcake) games and hopefully your QB gets healthy when the Dawgs stop through for the rent check.

Tenn has some weapons, just not sure if they know how to use them yet.
If I were Dooley, I would follow the advice of Coach Franklin and lay everything on the table and pass when you should run, go for it on 4th down, onside kick, blitz often …he needs to win 7 or 8 games.
He reminds me of Shula when hired at Bama, he needs to turn some heads.

@GameCluck in Georgia – you’re still referencing the past. Your comments about the last two years is like General Robert E. Lee bragging about winning a couple of battles in the Civil War and we know the whole story there. Also, how was Boise St inferior when they were ranked top 10? After last night’s performance I wouldn’t be too quick to talk trash as a Cluck fan. You might want to get on one of your blogs and talk about how you guys get your ship together before we show up in Columbia and hang 30-40 on you…..further exposing that defense more than Vandy did.

If I were a gamecock fan I’d probably get sauced on a cock blog after last night….
we get it though, It’s put up or shut up after that performance.
It’s scary when you folks start sounding like UF fans when you only speak of recent and fail to mention historic past……. this is a new year and that’s why it such a pure sport… its unknown until the season is over.
Issues for UGA…. hmmmm Defense is fine, Oline is fine, WR’s are fine, QB is fine, and after tomorrow the K and P wont be rookies anymore so they will be fine…. so maybe it would have to be TE??? at least until the next one finishes his application to TE U.. lol
bottom line – 1 game at a time, stay healthy, stay together, play hard, get better, have fun! most of all play UGA football and dont take the foot off the gas and we’ll be fine!
prediction for your next post – the new kickoff spot was created so it would help UGA kick it through the endzone making it even tougher to keep UGA from the SECCG…
that would be the only thing we havent heard before so I’m going out on a limb that what you bring won’t be original! lol

The saint coach and UGA ’s pollicys are the problem. Look at Alabama and LSU and other schools drug policy’s for example. Georgia has had TWO OR THREE TIMES LESS arrest than both bama and LSU as well as TWO OR THREE TIMES LESS DRUG OFFENSES!!! These other schools SIMPLY DO NOTHING BECAUSE THEY WANT TO WIN!!! I DONT LIKE THE UGA POLLICY OR THERE COACH!!! UGA HAS AS MUCH TALENT AS BAMA IF NOT MORE!!!! I believe they did last year also!!!! LSU WAS BEATEN BY 4 YES 4 TDS IN THE FIRST HALF AGAINST UGA IF THEY DIDNT DROP SURE TDS!!! Don’t tell me that game wouldn’t have been a different game if they get those SURE 4 TDS!! I DONT EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE BOWL GAME. CAN YOU SAY CONDITIONING?? CAN YOU SAY COACHING????? UGA OUT_PLAYED SOUTH CAROLINA AND STILL LOST!! THE SHITTY COACHING IN THE OPENER MORE SORRY COACHING AND MISSING PLAYERS.This year saint Richt throws off the freshman of the year running back from the team to start his stupidity! Then benches 4 starters on defence for less than the bama and LSU players do all the time. RICHT IS THE PROBLEM!! HE NEEDS TO BE A YOUTH PASTOR AND NOT AN SEC FOOTBALL COACH!!!! IM A CHRISTIAN BY THE WAY!!! I LOVE JESUS BUT I DESPISE RICHT AS A COACH!!!! You need to fight fire with fire!!! He reminds me of Obama AMERICA DONT TORCHER!!! HE SHOULD SAY AMERICA DONT TORCHER MY MUSLIM BROTHERS!!! THEN HE MAKES IT LEGAL FOR TERRORIST TO ENTER OUR COUNTRY. VOTE THIS IDIOT MUSLIM OUT BEFORE HE DESTROYS US!!!!!! REMEMBER BEN LOUDEN PROMISED SOMETHING IN THE HEART OF THE EAGLE?? IM NOT SURE HE IS REALLY DEAD!!! GET REAL VOTE RICHT AND OBAMA OUT AND EVERYTHING WILL GET BETTER!! TOM
