Cinesport’s Brian Clark dialed me up and wanted to ask me about Georgia’s freshman tailback Todd Gurley, the lack of injuries in preseason camp and some other things. Click the video below and you can hear all about it.

Great discussion, Chip! You know the stretching before and after practice is paying dividends. We have had a number of pulled muscles every year. The contrast this year looks very promising.

Can’t wait to see the new running backs in action. Gurley appears to be a true, SEC caliber tailback and a good person as well. Let’s hope he and all the dawgs stay healthy. Go Dawgs, beat Buffalo! Can’t win ‘em all without winning the first one.

It would be nice to let a few games unfold before fans start going nuts about any one particular player. A year ago, Crowell was the next star. Before him, Caleb King was the next star. We give a guy too much glory, then rip them to shreds when they join the Doobie Brothers (with the suspension that goes with it) or if they only average 3.9 yards per carry. We still have Coach Bobo calling the plays, for better and worse……….

What people keep forgetting is that almost every running back at this level can run if provided holes. The best can find a way to turn something out of nothing, and can take a 3 or 4 yard loss and turn it into no gain or positive yardage. What seperates the best backs from the average at this level is their ability to pick up the blitz. You have to be able to at least get a piece of the defender when they come in on the quarterback. This is my only worry about Gurley. Can he pick up the blitz? Will he be able to recognize the scheme and block the right person? This is what you need to look for.

I agree with giving SAMUELS the start! He has been a DGD and put the team before all of his personal goals. Let him carry the rock for the start of his senior season!
I think you will see Justin Scott Wesley returning punts when it is all said and done. Great speed and size. Keep B. Smith and M. Mitchell away from special teams. We need our corners healthy!

“tough. Most of these qualities were missing with Crowell, King, etc. I believe we have turned the corner regarding the “type” of athletes we are recruiting”
Gee…some people need to get jobs in NFL player development or recruiting because they can decipher all these things based on 2 scrimmages against 3rd team walkons.
Its all nonsense of course and nothing but the usual beaner wishful thinking…the beaners do this every year with the next “great” UGA Heisman winner….no wonder the kids never work to develop because they are pronounced as the greatest before they even take a snap.
Two summers ago, it was heavily delusional UGA beaners who were proclaiming that UGA had the real two dynamic duo, Ealey and King, who were of course really better than Richardson\Ingram and they had the goods to prove it….just you wait and see for that season.
Last season, it was the move of Samuel back to RB which meant that UGA now had the “bigger, faster” Richardson\Lattimore whom all opposing defenses would be terrified to tackle now that he had spent a year at 4th team LB.
Now we arrive at this Freshmen who has had two long runs against 2nd team defense along with averaging 1.9 yds a carry the rest of the scrimmage has suddenly solved all the dismal problems of UGA running game. This taking the Preseason MNC to a new level….he has won the Heisman before even taking a real snap against college competition…neat.

LogicalUS, I couldn’t agree more! LOL! These people have no clue what to look for anyway. Yes he has the size and speed…so do every other back at this level. These are suppose to be the elite players from high school…but they are still growing. These are boys, not men. Samuel is a man. He might not be the best back, but he knows the scheme, he can pick up blitzers and is big enough to take on the linebackers, and he is smart. As I said, he should get the nod until someone definitively takes him over. I still think all of the backs will run well. People have said that our O-line is young, but I think they will be better than the last several. They have something the others didn’t…attitude. They want to hit you in the mouth!

Stretching can’t be over looked. Kareem A. Jabar was injury free for the most part of his 21 NBA sasons. He says stretching was the key. He would strtch 90 min after each game and practice. Of course him being 7′14″ may have had something to do with it!

Paddy, when I was in the USMC, we not only did warm up exercises, we did cool down stretching exercises as well. It helps preven cramps, pulls, and prevents you from stiffening up as much too. I’m really suprised that they weren’t already doing cool down stretches.

If we are smart like I know Richt is. lol We will start Gurley from the begining of the season. Lets stop being loyal to back up players like Samuel, Malcom. Marshall at this point of his career is a third down back at best. I don’t wan’t to waist anytime in Gurley big game growth. By the time we get into the beef of our schedule, Gurley would be ready. If we keep holding him back, when big games come he would still be in that freshman mistake mold. Treat him like Latimore from SC and watch the young man carry us to a SEC title.

I agree we should be cautiously optimistic…I was one of those last year who thought Crow was a saviour…well we see how that turned out. I just wanna see these guys(the whole team) play hard and maximize their potential. I hate a loss but what is worse is to see those winnable games get away. Im not expecting a NC or even to get back to the SEC…Im just gonna be fired up and root for these guys as hard as I can. GO DAWGS!!!

@ SC Dawg:
If talking smack about UGA with the competition is really high among your priorities then you have a much, much bigger problem. urley had a couple of long TD runs but other than that he is averaging about 2 to 3 yards/carry. Marshal is getting injured a little too frequently but we will have Malcome and Samuels to rely on early on.
With all the bitching and negatives on here by DFINO will continue to hurt UGA especially in recruiting so maybe you should save up your sick leave for Mondays after UGA plays on Saturdays.
I expect great things from the Dawgs this year but it not only takes a great team to go undefeated, you must have few injuries and some luck. I will be pulling for the Dawgs evert game but it is insane to let it take over your health and mind!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheer up!!!! It is just a game but I live and die with the Dawgs as much as anybody. Nobody goes undefeated ALL the time and some even win the MNC without winning their conference or their division!!!!

Totally dillusional doggie fans – let’s review the probable losses for UGA this year:
MO – 50/50 game (UGA has stunk against B12 teams on the road – see OSU and Colorado).
Tennessee – 50/50 game – upset special – UGA thinking about Columbia and TN will be better than
many are giving them credit.
South Carolina: 30/70 – USCe will win this game as they are a better program. Spurrier vs Richt as HC? Spurrier vs Bobo as OC? USC will make it 3 in a row as they beat the over-rated doggies.
Florida -40/60 – Gators will be favorite – this team is more athletically talented than UGA and wll have a better defense. They will find their offensive identity by this game and they have a talented OL. Look for this team to be a very physical running team.
Auburn – wow wish both teams could lose this one. A second rate university in Alabama vs the state university of georgia which is a football wannebe team. What has uga exactly done on a national level? 2 national titles – one during WW2 when half the country did not field teams and the last in 1980? wow – really impressive, georgia …….really impressive.

Question? Wasn’t it supposed to be competition for the running backs as well as the other positions on the team? Well, the answer is that Gurley won the competition and deserves to start against Buffalo. Stop worrying about hurting someone’s feelings such as been the case with Aaron Murray for the last couple of years. Putting Gurley in for the Buffalo game will be great experience for getting him ready for the Missouri game and the DAWGS will sure as heck need him as well as the others then! GO DAWGS!!
