Georgia’s Todd Gurley scoffs at comparisons to Trent Richardson

ATHENS – Nobody is sure yet what Georgia has in tailback Todd Gurley. The freshman from Tarboro, N.C., has been the Bulldogs’ leading rusher in their first two scrimmages and has impressed coaches and teammates with his size and speed during preseason camp.

But if nothing else, it’s becoming clear that Gurley is well-grounded. He just laughed this week when he was informed that senior safety Shawn Williams compared him to Alabama’s Trent Richardson.

“I think he probably compared me to him because I wear No. 3 and I have dreads like Trent Richardson,” Gurley told reporters after practice Monday. “I have a long, long, long way to go to be like Trent Richardson. But, I mean , just for a starting senior here and one of the key leaders on the team to call me that, that’s big. I’ll just take that and keep working with it. That’s a nice compliment there.”

It certainly is. Richardson rushed for 3,130 yards and 35 touchdowns at Alabama, including 1,679 this past season as he led the Crimson Tide to the national championship. Richardson was picked No. 3 in the 2012 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns.

The physical comparisons between Gurley and Richardson go beyond their hairstyles, however. Richardson is 5-foot-11, 220 pounds. Gurley is 6-1, 218. And both have exceptional speed for their size. Gurley ran track for Team USA  in Europe in 2011 and advanced to the semifinals in the 110-meter hurdles at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France.

Georgia coaches are saying they currently have four No. 1s at tailback heading into the Sept. 1 season opener against Buffalo. Gurley and fellow freshman Keith Marshall is in that group, so either become the first freshman to start an opener for the Bulldogs since Danny Ware in 2004.

“I haven’t really even thought of that,” Gurley said. “I really haven’t. Man, that would be great just to start in the SEC as a true freshman at any position. But I haven’t really thought about starting. I’m just trying to get everything down.”

Sophomore Ken Malcome gets the majority of snaps with the No. 1 unit and senior Richard Samuel reps with the ones as well.

The comparison to TR is a high compliment from a teammate–but let’s not overburden young Mr. Gurley with unreasonable expectations. He has a load of talent and is certainly going to be a great member of the team, however, let us not forget that he has yet to run his first play in an SEC game. Why don’t we wait until after this season to start making comparisons to an NFL player who was the number three pick in the draft. I hope he will live up to that comparison but he does not have to do so to be a great RB.

I think the real story here is the lack of praise for Marshall. He had a head start on Gurley and it seems like he’s the number 3 back in the rotation. I know they’re ask Co-number 1’s but honestly there can only be 1-4. 1.Gurley, 2 Malcome 3 Samuel then Marshall. I’m just going off what I’ve read and the stats. Am I wrong, or has Gurley leapfrogged Marshall so far? I think we all know that Samuel is just getting reps because of his loyalty and knowledge.

IF UGA wins the SEC they still will not be there because those who vote have a love affair with the big ten and since Urban is at OSU and has a soft schedule, they will be voted #2 at the end and will go to the big game against USC.

let us pray (you’ll pardon the expression) that this season CMR sees the light – sees what 9l,000 fans see – and substitutes AM when he mentally and physically fatigues after the first half. Let us ferverently hope as well that our soft-hearted coach holds his compassion for the suffering of our opponents (after we may have scored a few more points than they) till after the game. Yes a killer instinct wins games. Unseemly ferocity (within the rules) wins games (See Auburn vs. UGA, 2011). After we triumph there’ll be time enough for man-hugs to be bestowed upon our worthy opponents.

The last couple of years, we have seen tons of TIDE fans on this blog. A few years ago they were LSU fans and Gators. Actually, these clowns never went to ANY of these fine schools. They are day trippers. The team winning at the moment is THEIR TEAM. They go to Walmart and purchase caps with THEIR SCHOOL’s insignia and stroll around the mall. It makes them feel important.

They pick the MNC team of that year and roll with it. Auburn had TONS of “fans” last year for about three weeks and even that went away. Oregon ALSO has “fans” here because of their goofy uniforms but that is another story.

Yes, whether a LSU or Alabama or former Gator “fan” they come here to trash talk the Dogs. It apparently makes them feel good. Afterall, I suspect that they ahve NOTHING TO Do or anywhere to go.

Gurley is the back that we have been missing since knowshon. He can do everything. Malcome can bust it between the tackles and finish runs. Marshall can take it on the outside and take it to the house at any moment. Gurley can do both and this is why he will lead the team in rushing this year. Its sad but Samuel is an afterthought and will probably only get meaningful snaps on passing downs, but he is a reliable blocker and we definitely will need that.

And to the tide trolls there is not one UGA fan that has compared Gurley to Trent Richardson bc no one has seen him, but for a player of Shawn Williams caliber to say that it gets me excited.

Gurley and Marshall have the mind set that is needed to be good team players. One thing we all need to remember is that there is a lot more than just running the ball at this position. You have to be able to pick up your blocks and have vision on the edges to do this. It is totally different in front of 90,000 than it is in practice. Game speed is different as well. A blitzing backer or a bull rush by a defensive end can blow right past you in a blink of a eye. I trust Coach Richt will make the right decision on who plays.
I would like to respond to the Bama folks on a few things. Your program has more SEC and Ntl. titles than ours. You have a great fan base and a outstanding coach. You deserve to be on top of the mountain but don’t come here belittling the fact that UGA is not where you are. We have pride in our school and program as well. We are not Sisters Of The Poor. We have won 12 SEC titles and Coach Richt can claim several. As an alumni and one who wore the uniform I take great disdain to see my school badgered. If I am doing my math correctly, Coach Richt owns a winning record against Alabama. Obviously he can not claim a national championship but hopefully he will
bring us one soon. If you are so content on bashing UGA day in and day out then you have a problem. Most of the so called “Bama” fans on here are actually Tech fans . I was once told if you do not have anything positive to say then keep it to your self.

Georgia has 5 times the population of Alabama hence the amount of talent that comes out of highschool every year. Anyone that thinks alabama doesn’t have good highschool football i suggest watching hoover play prattville this year.

I’d have to agree, This is NOTHING like what Crowell faced. The situation, or the dangers of high expectations. Gurley was not even the most heralded of the freshmen RB much less expected to carry the team.. Some thought he might RS. If we have such thin skin that we cant even comment on a very pleasant surprise in our preseason camp, without worrying that fate might take him the way of a former player, we may as well hang it up.

You are completely out of touch. IC had a reputation in HS for getting in trouble, poor grades and whimping-out with injuries. He was a gamble and a big mistake. Gurley is the opposite to IC and He, along with his buddy KM will be superstars together. By the way, Keith Marshall is the only player in history to have a higher GPA in HS than his time in the forty (4.3 to 4.25)…that is twice IC’s HS GPA. KM and TG will not be troublemakers at UGa so don’t lose sleep over that issue.

I think the headline is a bit misleading given the content of the player’s quote. “Scoff” implies hubris, and I expected his quote to read, “Are you kidding?! It sure is refreshing to hear how humble and focused some of the players in the 2012 class. Kids who would rather let their talents on the field speak for them instead of running there mouth. A lot of the 2011 class are like that to. CMR has done a better job in resent years in recruiting not only humble kids but smart kids, one who deserve to be in college. The few mistakes , like Crowell didn’t last long and was cut loose fast. Some kids just have no business being in college.
The player who I am most proud of on the Georgia team is Jarvis Jones. This kid, from the same environment as Crowell, is very humble, focused and doesn’t run his mouth. Someone who could have been a first round draft choice last year but came back to get some more experience under Grantham’s leadership. A leader and mentor of the younger kids who let’s his results on the field speak for him. A truly great Dawg and I hope he will have a long and rewarding future as a Pro.

That is not my perspective on college football. That is my observation of the UGA football program over the past 5 years. We have been average at best on the O-line.

“We’ll let you know after the season how it went, and you can decided then if it’s worth your bother.”

No thanks. I prefer to watch the games myself. I also prefer to look at UGA football, which I love dearly, objectively and without bias as much as possible. I guess you don’t feel the same. Good for you. Based on my observations over the past 5 seasons or so I can tell you EXACTLY how this season is going to go unless something changes. We will win the games we are supposed to win. We have a good QB and a good defense. However, without an improved offensive line we will lose the big games. This has been proven time and time again. “Can’t believe we are Bobo bashing again while Bobo sits in the booth and calls the same plays we have been running for 11 years.”

I disagree. I think the offense has changed substantially since Bobo took over. When Richt was in charge we were known for ball control and actually had some semblance of a running game. We could actually grind out tough yards when needed. David Greene didn’t light the stat sheet on fire but he also didn’t put our defense in horrific positions with turnovers because Richt was letting him zip the ball over the field like it was a damn flag football game. It was more about winning the damn game than putting up flashy stats, which leads me to my next point…..

“And you do know we score a lot more and have better stats offensively now than we did 7 or 8 years ago.”

Who gives a flying crap? If I want flashy stats I’ll go root for some sissy team out west or Georgia Tech. I want wins and championships. Bobo cannot get it done against the best teams. That is not an opinion. That is not “hating.” That is a FACT. So maybe we’re putting up some big numbers against the New Mexico State’s and Georgia Tech’s of the world? Whoopdeefreakingdoo!!! How’d we look against LSU last year? What about Boise State? Those were both top 5 teams and Bobo was completely outclassed, which leads me to my next point….

“Because we could win 20-14 then because of our defense.”

Defense is no longer an excuse for Mike Bobo. We had a very good defense last year. We were not able to keep up with Boise State offensively. The offense was a complete no show in the second half against LSU. The running game against Mich State in the bowl game was an absolute freaking embarassment to the game of football. Defense is not an excuse anymore. We had a good defense in 2007. We missed out on a shot at a championship because of Mike Bobo’s offense against South Carolina and Tennessee that year. Those two losses were completely on Mike Bobo. He is not a championship caliber offensive coordinator.

You can continue to make excuses for him and I’ll continue to wait patiently until we have an offensive coordinator that knows what he’s doing and can win us championships.

Thanks.

I’d bet the farm that Roll Tide has, at some point, attempted the ludicrous comparison of Trent Richardson to Herschel Walker, so that fool can just STFU.

And Honey Badger didn’t go to rehab for pot.

I hope the team stays focused on the task at hand and not get distracted. I believe Missouri will be a ready football team and Georgia must not under estimate them. I wish the team, the offense and defensive a outstanding season. If the running backs play together and not get caught up in the hype they will be ok.

I’m excited about the defense and hope they exceeds expectations and at the end of the season ranked within the top 1-5 defenses in the nation.

Murray needs an exceptional season and he has to be more consistent in not throwing interceptions.

GO Gurley, Malcome, Marshall, Samuels, Harton, and the other backs-have a great season and thanks for being a DAWG!!!

P.S. Really excited about the receiving corp!!! Get to the SEC Championship game! I could care less who you play as if the team gets there they will compete. I believe they as a team learned valuable lessons in the LSU game last year and for a few first half mistakes could and should have had LSU on the ropes!

It’s nice to see that Gurley is grounded and a little humble in his role at Georgia. I believe Marshall is the same way and the impact these two could have at Georgia is really positive. The other backs are a great group of guys and have proven themselves and it nice to see two quality people such Gurley and Marshall added to the mix.

I really hope that some other top quality backs will see opportunities at Georgia and join the fold. Especially if they have the character of these two guys.

I coached Todd in football and track. As long as he stays humble and blesses the Lord for the talents he has been given, he will do Great things at Georgia. I was and am very lucky to have worked with such a fine young man.
