Notebook: UGA’s Kolton Houston remains in NCAA limbo, but still practicing

ATHENS – Georgia’s starting offensive line appears to be set two weeks before the season opener against Buffalo. But all that could change should sophomore Kolton Houston return to the equation.

Houston is ineligible due to the presence of a banned substance that has been in his system since 2010. Georgia has appealed that suspension to the NCAA because of the insufficient dissipation of the steroid despite what Georgia claims is “no re-use.” But the appeal was denied, and Houston must wait until an acceptable threshold is reached. If and when that happens, Houston will be immediately eligible to play.

In the meantime, Houston continues to practice while undergoing testing once a week. He was listed as the starting right tackle entering preseason practice.

“There’s no update, nothing new,” coach Mark Richt said Thursday. “I would think as soon as we knew he was cleared to play, it would be something we’d want to tell everybody. We’d be excited about telling that.”

At the moment, freshman John Theus is taking most of the snaps at right tackle with the No. 1 offense. He’s splitting time with sophomore Watts Dantzler, who also gets work at right guard.

Houston gets the majority of his work with the Nos. 2 and 3 units.

“We’re still trying to rep him enough to keep him as ready as we can without taking reps from guys we know are eligible to play,” Richt said. “So it’s kind of a touchy deal. But he’s getting some good work. … He can practice, so we’re trying to keep him fresh and get him as game-ready as we can.”

Andrews solidifies position

Another question for the offensive line entering the preseason was whether sophomore David Andrews would be able to hold the job at center. The Bulldogs aren’t ready to announce starting lineups, but indications are the Wesleyan grad has earned the top spot.

“I think David Andrews has had a good camp,” Richt said. “To me he has solidified that job.”

Sophomore Hunter Long was practicing as the No. 2 center before breaking his leg last week. But the question the Bulldogs were looking to answer in camp was whether they needed to move Chris Burnette to center from right guard. They now have that answer.

“We were just trying to find the best combination of five,” Richt said. “We went into camp hoping [Andrews] would be the guy, I would say. … I think it’s the best combination for Georgia for David to be the center.”

King sidelined

Wide receiver Tavarres King missed practice Friday because of what was listed on the post-practice injury report as a “left lower leg strain.” He was one of two flankers out for Georgia, as Rantavious Wooten was sidelined with a right hip strain.

Richt indicated the injuries weren’t serious.

“It just affected them today,” he said. “I don’t know that it will affect them much longer. I don’t think it’s anything serious.”

With those players out of action, sophomore Chris Conley and redshirt freshman Justin Scott-Wesley got more snaps with the No. 1 offense.

Picture this

Picture Day for fans is scheduled from 1-5 p.m. Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Football players and coaches will be there from 3-5 p.m. while other UGA athletes — including Olympic gold medalist Allison Schmitt — will be on hand from 1-3 p.m. Coupons to get pictures with Richt and bulldog mascot Russ will be distributed at 8 a.m. at the east-end ticket window.

Houston should just deny knowledge of the banned substance and say his dad is the only person who knew about it. Then he could play and even win the Heisman.

Dawg-Gawn…
The Seilers have picked a new UGA but do not want him to start the season because of the heat and noise due to him being a puppy.
Does anyone know if we are allowed to bring our own items to be signed or will the school be handing out posters again??

Kolton has never played. Kolton has not been allowed to play by NCAA. Why is he a sophomore? Kolton should be listed a freshman. If NCAA neo nazis ban him from playing for 4 years plus say 7 games into his fifth year, Kolton what gets to play 5 games or whatever?

The Idiot Olympics are in full force and I would like to update the readers of this AJC blog on the current standings. With two weeks until the start of the season, three idiots have separated themselves as the biggest trolls on this board.

Gold: GtBob- This determined troll is always right on top of his game, making sure everyone knows of his presence. He goes out of his way to insult Georgia’s players, coaches and program while his program is still stuck in the mud. Bob seems to not spend much time on his own team’s blog.

Silver: SSI Gator- This troll is always quick to criticize his rival team and seems to suffer from a superiority complex. Unfortunately for SSI, his(assuming it’s a guy) team no longer is superior to UGA, as Florida has suffered consecutive lousy seasons. Nevertheless, he is as cocky as ever and still seems to think UGA is about a six-win team.

Bronze: There are so many who could qualify for this final spot. “A Person Smart Enough To Know” and “Saint Richt” are tied for this position. Both appear to be Tech fans and don’t make much sense in their posts.

a letter writing campain to the NCAA by all UGA fans!!! Bombard them with letters. Send one everyday until KH ban is lifted. If every fan sends one everyday imagine the clogging of the mail at the NCAA offices. Just a short note demanding justice, the same they give Auburn every year The turning the other way when it comes to oversigning and greyshirting by Alabama. The suit scandle there but nothing happens of significance, yet when AJ sold his jersey a 5, yes FIVE game ban…..double standard? Who is the NCAA/ESPN darlings? Yes ESPN has influence on the NCAA they generate a lot of cash flow for them, as does all major networks.

I have always respected the betting odds that Vegas come up with. It amazes me how accurate they are. This year They have Alabama and LSU winning the SEC by 11 to 5 . Third is Georgia at 11 to 2. They also have Murray at 15 to 1 odds of winning the Heisman. If Georgia has as good of season as Vegas is betting we will win 10 to 12 games or more.
Don’t nobody give up on them yet we could have a very special year.

We Run the East

I don’t know which is harder to believe- UGA does not lose a game this year or Murray for Heisman! UGA fans are so good in the preseason. CMR is gonna moon the SC bench? Hardly, as i am sure Lattimore will get his annuall 175 yds a game against UGA. Will Lattimore be the ALL TIME leading rusher against UGA? He already has over 350 yds in just 2 games. Think your freshmen backs will be as good as Lattimore? Dream on little doggies!

Mouth of the east, it must feel good as a SC fan to finally, after decades of total dominance, to be able to talk a little smack. This year we return to patterns of the past. Okay so here is an idea… and yes, I know it’s out there… why don’t the Dawgs “filter” Houston’s blood? Surely there is some kind of machine that can strain out this offending steroid? The whole thing is so asinine that a solution like that is required to complete the saga. The NCAA is on drugs. The steroid does nothing to enhance performance so why is it banned? If it made him gain muscle mass or some such thing then I could see making him ineligible but the that steroid has no effect on that at all. The NCAA is administered like a government bureaucracy. Most of what they do makes damn sense at all.

That those who are envy our flagship state university have to go back nearly 30 years to find something serious enough to post on a blog.

As Oh Yeah posted, that sort of thing has been going on at various schools for a long time. Check out the charges against UNC and Auburn.

Let’s hope all schools caught engaging in this, react as UGA did, by raising the academic standards above most of their NCAA brethren, while continuing to be one of the nation’s top overall athletic programs, men and women.
