No distinction between Todd Gurley and Georgia’s other tailbacks

ATHENS — Freshman Todd Gurley has out-gained the other tailbacks two-fold with 167 yards and 3 touchdowns on 15 touches in Georgia’s two scrimmages. But that hasn’t been enough for coaches to anoint him as No. 1 player at the position.

“As far as a clear-cut pecking order, I think we’ll probably come up with one a little bit later on, but not today,” running backs coach Bryan McClendon said after Thursday’s practice.  “We have one more scrimmage next week and a few more padded practices to keep progressing. So we still have some time to do some evaluating and guys to get better as well. You don’t want to come up with something and then switching things up next week and create a mess.”

McClendon said after reviewing the video from Wednesday’s scrimmage and watching closely observing Gurley go through 15 preseason practices, he is as excited as everybody else about the 6-foot-1, 218-pound runner. But he is also getting positive feedback from the other three players battling to be the No. 1 tailback: sophomore Ken Malcome, senior Richard Samuel and freshman Keith Marshall.

“You get excited when you see [Gurley] go out and perform,” McClendon said. “He went out there and had a good scrimmage. But he wasn’t the only one. Keith had a good scrimmage and had some good runs. And Ken, stat wise, didn’t have the numbers that those guys did, but he was probably the best one out there yesterday. It’s definitely something you have to go by what you see, but all those guys are working their tails off and pushing each other. It’s exciting to see that now.”

McClendon said he envisions all four players getting carries in the Buffalo game. One of them will have to go first, and the Bulldogs can play it a lot of different ways.

It can start Malcome, who began the preseason in the No. 1 position and has done nothing to fall back;

It can reward the senior Richard Samuel for being willing to return to the position and split time at fullback;

It can go with either one of the freshmen, making one the first rookie to start a season opener since Danny Ware in 2004.

Whatever Georgia does, McClendon thinks it’s merely trivia.

“I definitely think we’ll use four,” he said. “We used three the last couple of years in each game. We’ve played three or four guys before, so I definitely think we can play all four of them.”

Here’s what Georgia’s five tailbacks have done in the two scrimmage. Keep in mind that situations and opportunities with the No. 1 offense vary for each:

  • Gurley: 13 carries — 145 yards — 11.2 ypc — 3 TDs
  • Malcome: 10-67-6.7ypc-1
  • Harton: 14-56-4.0 ypc-0
  • Marshall 12-46-3.83 ypc-1
  • Samuel 6-40-6.67 ypc-1

Depth is a wonderful thing to have at any position. With four fresh horses, we should see some high energy back there at TB. We are also very deep at receiver. If I were CMB, I would think about no huddle. We could put new receivers and backs on the field every play–three deep. I would hate to be an opposing defensive back trying to run with a three deep rotation, no huddle. We could just run our opponents to death.

Looks like McClendon is looking for backs that are passblockers, more than runners. In that case, Samuel & Malcome will get most of the carries. Plus, must be that Gurley & Marshall are getting all their carries against the #2 defense, so their stats arn’t a big deal to McClendon.

Bud

August 17th, 2012

Samuel’s stats, the 6 carries, are only from the 2nd scrimmage. Richt did not release Samuel’s stats from the first scrimmage. Samuel must have been so good in the first scrimmage, that Richt wanted to hide it from Missourri. We know Samuel is also the best passblocking back. So I do think he’ll get most of the carries this season. Malcome is the second best passblocker, so he’ll get his share, Marshall & Gurley probably have a ways to go on the passblocking, so one could end up redshirting, probably Gurley, since Marshall got to camp early and has the passblocking edge.

Passblocking stats are not recorded, so we must figure, if McClendon is still high on Samuel & Malcome because of their advanced passblocking skills, and McClendon is holding back on naming Gurley & Marshall #1 & #2, unitl maybe mid-season, when their passblocking skills come around..

Mr Richt need a premier rb to carry the load @uga like Warrick Dunn was @fsu. Dunn(187lbs) is the only Seminole to rush for over 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. 1418 yards in a single season. RBs get stronger each quarter.

I was hoping Ken Malcome would get his opportunity to be the starter but if Todd Gurley is our best rb, then you have to play him. Mr Richt need to come out the gate with his best players in the starting lineup. That’s what great coaches do.

Honestly, that is why there is no leader…Gurley’s runs were not against the 1st team…in fact, his numbers are skewed by two long runs against 3rd teamers….his other carries are 14 carries for 34 yds…or 2.1 yds a carry.

The UGA coaches could do themselves a favor by not releasing these meaningless stats, now they are going to have some of the uglier UGA beaners booing and screaming at them on the sidelines all season.

It’s perplexing why McClendon said Malcome had the best day.

I mean if you look at things objectively in the two scrimmages, touchdowns, yards, or yards per carry, Gurley was significantly more effective than Malcome.

So it must come down to McClendon’s subjective feelings that do not include traditional ways to evaluate running backs like touchdowns, yards, or yards per carry, perhaps passblocking or whether you went against the first or second string defense or how you did in practice instead of scrimmages or how long you have played on the team.

It’s interesting to see the contrast in how UGA & GT handle the running back ecking order.

The pecking order at GT in the offseason is always in flux, based on who had the highest yard per carry that day.

At UGA, it tends to be more static and not based on objective criteria.

GT’s rushing results are usually #1 or #2 in the nation, UGA’s are usually 7th in the SEC, so I’d say GT’s way of doing things get much better results there.

So our big problem at RB is that we have several guys who are all performing at a similar level–not so bad as problems go. We know that they are all going to get playing time–especially against Buffalo.

I just hope that Harton is not run up the middle. If Bobo runs him up the middle again on 3rd and long, Richt should give him a smack on the back of the head (Gibbs style). Harton has alot of heart but the laws of physics get in his way. He is good but not Warrick Dunn. They should only use him in screens and short passes as a safety valve.

The play I would really like to see more that once a season is an old fashioned power sweep. Put Hall and Samuel in as double fullbacks and run Marshall or Gurley behind them and a TE or pulling guard. Smash-mouth football.

Well, we’ve heard all of these glowing reviews out of preseason practice before haven’t we? I remember this time last year there was some talk about how unstoppable the sweep would be with Samuel at tailback and I think it was Figgins at fullback because of their size. Anyone remember that? I got pretty excited and thought maybe a coconut had hit Bobo in the head while he was on vacation and he finally realized that a physical running game is the way to win SEC football games. Well, I don’t recall seeing that play a single time throughout the whole season.

Gurley may be looking good in practice but we’ll see if Bobo will properly use him in the games. I like Gurley’s size but it will probably be a waste because Bobo thinks this is a flag football league. Bobo gets impatient with the running game and his passing game trigger finger starts getting might itchy, especially in the red zone. I’d love to see a breakdown of pass vs. run in the red zone. It seems like whenever we get close Bobo starts letting Murray fire away on almost every play.

Thanks.

I can just imagine the coaches’ discussion from reading your post: CMR- OK, how do we convince the public that Gurley is only average so we can play somebody else other than the best TB? CBM- Well, we didn’t play Malcome last year, so let’s play him this year, no matter how good 3 & 4 are. CMB- That sounds good, and let’s also recruit linemen from outside GA to make Tide Roll mad, even though SC and Vandy are getting the really good players. We really aren’t trying to win championships; it is all about playing favorites. Bud, think back through the great RBs that CMR and CMB have coached in their careers and ask yourself if maybe, just maybe, they know what they are doing…

I’m sure McClendon sincerely thinks Samuel & Malcome are better than Gurley. And most of his ideas are the ones that led to UGA being ranked 7-10th in the conference for the last 4 years. Last 4 of the time when it comes to the rushing game, McClendon is always sincerely wrong. What makes anyone think he’s finally right now for the first time in 5 years?

Well, CMB, CMR, and CBM have said that all of them will get plenty of carries and they will sink or swim on their performance. I’m going to make a bold prediction: if Gurley averages 12 yards a carry and he doesn’t fumble, he will be the number 1 TB, and probably a freshman Heisman winner! Bud, the coaches want to win much worse than you do.

6 ypc = 11 ypc

Apparently Hutson Mason is SO good he’s going to be the next Peyton Manning. Murray will get hurt and he will end up being better than Stafford and be drafted in the first round in the NFL. Then we’ll know for sure that Richt only started Murray because he liked Aaron better! Some of you guys are morons on here.

No separation may just mean Gurley still has a lot to learn about the playbook or pass blocking. Or McClendon may just want to wait and see if Todd can keep up the good work in the last scrimmage. We all know these numbers are a little inflated when our defense is giving up over 5 to almost all of the backs. If must have had something to do with the playcalling.

Hot dog

I think a coach’s ego would get in the way of leaving a better player on the bench. Remember, running backs must learn pass protection and the playbook and Richt has made it clear in past years how important pass protection is in this offense.

It’s time for Georgia to figure out whether:

a) You want to finish in the top 3 in SEC in passing and watch someone else win the SEC

b) you want to win the SEC by finishing #1 in rushing

If it’s (a), then keep looking for backs who can PASSBLOCK, like you have since 2008 and finish between 7-10th in the conference in rushing, don’t win the SEC, but have good passing numbers.

If it’s (b), you have to average over 215+ yards a game rushing, instead of 164. And look for backs who can RUN.

There are two many variables to go just with YPC. What team were they running with? What team were they running against? Who was the fullback? Who was the quarterback? What were the plays? Was the defense expecting pass? Etc.

Let Samuel be the first to touch the ball, but play all four. Richard deserves the honor and should be rewarded for his hard work and leadership. With four horses like this plus a great young fullback, why not run, run, run, and wear out the defenses? We should routinely get over 250-300 yards rushing. Run the danged ball.

Start Malcome/Samuel for first series. Gurley/Hall second series. Marshal/Hicks third series. Keep alternating until someone seperates themselves from the pack. It can’t hurt and will keep the Defense from getting any rhythm. Eventually this will show who’s #1. This will also reward Richard and Malcome for all their hard work. We are blessed with RBs this year and may have a couple of really good full-backs also. The only way UGA wins the SECe this year and Richt & Bobo keep their jobs is if we develope our running game this year. If you don’t use them, we will surely lose them…

Anybody that follows football knows that a passing game is a quick strike offense. This means your Defense will be on the field alot. No wonder we run out of gas in the 2nd half. A running game eats the clock. It keeps the other teams offense off the field and KEEPS OUR DEFENSE FRESHER GOING INTO THE 2nd HALF. The rushing game will win a championship and make your Defense even better. If CMR can’t see that by now, then maybe he’s not going to take us to the next level. With our talent, the only thing holding us back is “COACHING”…

kingdaddy, I think we would have run the ball more last season if our running backs had played better. Maybe with four fresh guys to tote the rock and some good young fullbacks out there, the staff will call more running plays. Murray seems to play better when he has a running game to back him up, because play action is much more effective. (Ex: Auburn game)

If CMB doesn’t use imagination better in the run game, it won’t matter. Most every team in the SEC can stop you from running between the tackles. Bobo used no imagination last year. 2 up the gut, a bomb, then punt! I was so sick watching this over and over. Just as when we had Ware, Lumpkin and Brown, two of,which are still NFLers Coach Mike Bobo, or whichever coach parcels playing time won’t have a real plan for playing them. It’ll be one running for six yards, then he’ll get pulled for someone else. This staff proved back then that too many weapons is
too much for them to figure out. I’m a big Richt fan, but facts are facts. They won’t give anyone time to get in the flow of the game, just as they didn’t back then.

Bud, for the 5th time…..the stats are totally incorrect!!! Keith Marshall averaged 12.4 yards/ carry in the last scrimmage. He had fewer yards, but also fewer carries than Gurley. You can’t say Gurley is better based on a total of only 13 carries in 2 scrimmages…..when his competition (KM) had fewer opportunities and still averaged way over 10 yds/ carry. That totally defies logic…..and you don’t have a clue as to which defense they were facing and what offensive line they were running behind. I’m certain the coaches have to wade through all those factors in making a decision.

Just throwing this out there but Georgia was #1 in total yards offense in the SEC last year, 3 rd in Average yards per game, 3rd in 3rd down efficiency , 1st in total 1st downs. 5th in rushing offense.
3rd in passing offense. Not saying there isn’t plenty of room for improvement especially with turnovers and a field goal kicker that missed 14 FGs,these stats came a against 6 defenses that ranked in the top 20 nationally., without any consistency at TB.

I understand the need to be sensitive to upper classmen but they need to understand that the BEST back starts. And if it’s Gurley or Marshall then so be it! Doing it any other way is opening a Pandora’s box of trouble! Hopefully Richt understands that if he wants to hang around a few more years.

My hope is that one guy emerges amongst this group. RB by committee does not allow an individual to get in the rhythm of the game. You need a workhorse and then spell them when the time is right. We should not be worried about the running backs. They are good and will produce behind our new line for years to come, but I am uneasy about whether Coach Bobo will utilize these talented RBs to the best of THEIR ABILITY? 2 up the gut by Carlton Thomas and a bomb, then punt, will not win us a big game this year! (Carlton Thomas never stood a chance!) Without an outside game this year, we will not beat S.C., FLA. OR AUBURN. A stout Defensive line will stop last years running game, but THIS YEARS RUNNING GAME CAN BE DIFFERENT. Only with an OUTSIDE RUNNING GAME will we get where we want to be this year. If CMR wants to win a big game, he has to change philosophies. Run first, eat clock, no turn-overs—DEFENSE. I’m not saying no more passing, I’m saying less passing, more running. LAST YEAR, OUR PASSING GAME ALMOST DESTROYED OUR DEFENSE BY KEEPING THEM ON THE FIELD TOO LONG. Bobo is the key…

Mssrs Richt and Bobo need to put a halt to their friends and family program.

Who starts and who plays needs to be based on merit, not seniority or who sucks up the best.

Gurley will be too good to keep off the field. He will be as good if not better than Crowell. Many of us heard he was the secret weapon, not Marshall, coming out of NC. People forget he is only 4 pounds lighter than Herschel Walker was as a frosh. You will see a surprising running game this year. If it is as good against Missouri, and Georgia doesn’t struggle in that game, Georgia will go 11-1 and play for the SEC Title again, this time winning it (and that includes whipping Bama if that is the West winner).

I agree with kingdaddy….start the 1st game at tailback/fullback with Malcome/Samuel, then Gurley/Hall, then Marshall/Hicks, and early in the 4th qt with Samuel/Ogletree…late in the 4th with Harton,Karempelis/any other FB…..now for the Mizzou game….play whoever played the best overall in the 1st game at both positions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked Alabama to win the SEC West last year and they would have if their field goal kicker makes one field goal but amazingly they were allowed to play for the National title. I again picked them to beat LSU 21 to 7 which they did and I was pretty close with the score.
Alabama can’t beat LSU this year unless Mettenburger bombs or get hurt. Alabama lost too many great play makers in the draft.

Herschel didn’t start vs TN in ‘80. “Just another big slow back.”.

Start the senior it’s only right ! He’ll get to play full back also ! That’s serious for Buff. 4 backs 4 quarters ! Don’t get them banged It’s a long season ! We’ll need Richard to stay healhty I predict he’s going to have alot to do with our progress early on with his blocking on the passing plays !

The real concern is even if Richt has a playmaker at RB, will this head coach be able to properly utilize him in the season and hold on to him in the off-season. The problem is Richt’s offenses are not geared to feature the run, which at Georgia and in the SEC is a major problem. Richt’s offensive playbook and big but soft O-line is not prepared to support a power run game, which is why Richt has downgraded the importance of running the ball and depended on an error-prone QB to defeat lesser opponents and lose to respectable opponents. He has a ACC passing mentality in a power running league dominated by Saban and Miles. Historically speaking most of Georgia’s greatest teams of bygone era, featured a power running game. But as in his recent past and true to his form, Richt will find a way to mis-manage or under-utilize the RBs and waste their talent. May the offensive blame-games of the Richt era continue.

Another thing, the socialistic Richt sympathizers must stop focusing on the coaches overall cumulative won/lost record to soothe the sting of a disappointing loss or disappointing season. He’s been more than compensated for past games. The era of coaches winning just enough to keep a job 15 to 20 years to win a national title at a major competitive program is dead and gone. Accept it. After 12 years on the job, Richt has approached(or may have passed) the now or never point. Will Richt raise the program to the next level or will it be the same old sad story of under-achievement ? Stay tuned my friends, this season will tell the story. Go you Hairy Dogs !

If you have four runs for 4 yards and a fifth for 66 yards Your average will be 12 ypc. Whoever is getting the consistent yardage and blocking is the guy. Give me a back that can consistently get 3-4 yard carries any day.

I would love to see four straight runs for a 1st down late in the game. How long has it been? I would love to see a nice 90+ yard march down the field that just kills the clock and the opposing D while our D is rested up. I miss those days.

Those of you who think Gurley or Marshall will redshirt are obviously too young to understand football. All 5 guys will carry the rock in the first game.

Unfortunately for Gurley / Marshall our illustrious leaders Richt and Bobo tend to use players based on their hard work, good attitude etc rather than output. So Samuel will get the ball more than anybody because of his willingness to constantly switch positions. It won’t matter he runs it for 50x and only get 7yards. Same with Malcome.

It’ll take getting a mile behind in the Missouri game before Gurley and Marshall get some serious carries.

Wow the first thing I thought was the defense sure is giving up a lot of ypc. All but one of them were good.

Everybody knows. there will NEVER be another Hershel Walker. We need to stop saying these guys are the next Hershel. Let them be the present who they are, and give them the chance to prove themselves without comparing them to anybody.

I am from Tarboro (the same home toen as Gurley), and had the pleasure of watching this kid play for four years. He is one of the most gifted athletes i have ever seen in any sport. Besides football he was a state champion in the hundred meter hurdles and a great basketball player. Because Marshall went to Milbrook H.S. and its vicinity to Tarboro I had the chance to watch him as well, and i feel like both these guys will be great college players, but Gurley is speacial, he runs hard both outside and up the middle, and the biggest difference between him and Marshall is he will RUN OVER people. Maek my words, if given the chance to play he will be one of the best running backs in college football. We here are proud of him and are glad he has the oppurtunity to play for an outstanding University like Georgia, in the toughest conference in college football.
