Most questions have been answered as Georgia prepares for 2nd preseason scrimmage

ATHENS – Georgia will hold it’s second controlled scrimmage of the preseason this afternoon at Sanford Stadium. And for many of the Bulldogs, this will be their most important practice of the year.

After today, Georgia will pretty much settle in on organizing its game plan for the season opener against Buffalo. But the players who will figure into those plans will largely be decided on after today.

Most of the Bulldogs’ personnel decisions have been made. We all know who the quarterback will be and, even though there were three starters to replace, the offensive line was basically established in the first week of camp.

The only real questions on the offensive side of the ball is who will start at fullback and what will the tailback rotation look like. So this is an important day for tailbacks Ken Malcome, Richard Samuel, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, as it is for right tackles John Theus and Watts Dantzler. If Samuel or freshman Quayvon Hicks going to unseat Merritt Hall at fullback, they’ll need to prove they’re worthy of it today.

“I believe we’re ahead of last year and I think that’s due to a lot of guys coming back, one being our quarterback being a third-year starter and having more knowledge of the offense,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said, refeering to junior quarterback Aaron Murray. “He’s getting us into better plays, getting our protections set better and that’s making the adjustments easier for our offensive line. We’ve just got to keep improving daily and throughout the season.”

Defensively, Georgia basically has nine starters returning, so there’s not a lot of mystery about who will be playing on that side of the ball (suspensions notwithstanding). It looks like senior Cornelius Washington has nailed down the defensive end spot opposite Abry Jones, with multi-game starter Garrison Smith filling in on either side. Ray Drew needs to prove he’s worthy of being in the rotation but remained in a non-contact status due to a concussion as of the last practice. Redshirt freshman Sterling Baileyis battling for snaps as well.

Your cornerbacks after Sanders Commings are  Branden Smith, Damian Swann and Malcolm Mitchell with Devin Bowman, Blake Sailors and Sheldon Dawson providing depth. Connor Norman and Corey Moore have to prove they’re dependable backups for Bacarri Rambo at free safety.

Whether or not Rambo or Alec Ogletree will be available for the first game — or any of the first four — is a question that remains unanswered and coach Mark Richt is still not ready to address it.

“I don’t know when we’ll let y’all know that,” Richt said this past weekend. “I don’t like talking about that.”

Of course, Georgia’s kicking game is the biggest unknown heading into the season. But we pretty much know who will be doing the work. Freshman place-kicker Marshall Morgan and punter Collin Barber will be looking to instill confidence in the coaches — and their teammates.

Georgia’s scrimmage won’t get started until 5 o’clock this afternoon, so it will be later this evening before I’ll be able to share any stats or observations. In the meantime, what is your biggest concern with 17 days remaining before the season opener?

One of the biggest concerns…seems so lately is conservative play calling on offense. Hate to say it but Les Miles and Steve Spurrier take chances and gamble. You have to in order to make it to the big stage. We UGA does actually take a few risks, it seems the payout is huge. Just an observation.
Second concern would most likely be suspensions on D.

How can we stay on the field with these guys. We know nothing about them. They are an unknown. They come here to knock us off and we are just not ready. They are fast – we can’t keep up with their speed. They have a wall of a defense and we have no running backs. We can’t block and our kicking game is a mess. If we can just keep it close maybe we will have a chance for a long field goal. Hunker down, dawgs – you gotta hunker down……

biggest concern has to be the suspension( not against buffalo but going to mizzou with 2nd stringers in the secondary is scary) and the kicking game. blair walsh’s struggles really hurt us last year, and to start a true freshman is a major concern

Offensive Line, Offensive game planning and playcalling, tailback situation, suspensions and whether Murray can overcome some of his big game mistakes. Obviously pretty concerned with the offensive side of the ball. Feel really good about the defense and the coaching on that side.

Kickers will be fine… most do start as true freshmen anyway (Rex Robinson, Kevin Butler, Blair Walsh ring a bell?). I am worried about suspensions, but I understand why Richt isn’t talking. I think fans forget that football players or not, these young men should have the right to some privacy. I think Murray is going to have a breakout year and that our stable of tailbacks, with Malcome and Samuel to give them maturity and Gurley and Marshall young talent, will be great. SEC CHAMPS!

As great as Glenn and Anderson were last year, I wondered if both might have been natural guards who were moved to tackle. This year’s tackles sound like they are playing where they are most gifted, and where they want to be. Wouldn’t it be funny if this year’s line ends up being better than last year’s? Sounds like Malcome, Murray, and the receivers are all another year older and wiser–could be a great year coming Dawgs! Here is hoping we stay healthy.

As for concerns my biggest is always the OL its performance means so much to the team and is so dependent on timing and team work. At the start of every year there is a certain amount of time needed to “jell” as a OL unit. Second biggest is injuries if we can stay healthy we could have a real good team this year. Go Dogs!

I’m not that worried about the suspensions right now. I am more worried about the distraction factor, along with the repeated errors in judgment, and what that means. We are very deep on D, and the only area we are questionable is the secondary. Sometimes getting more people ready to play early helps depth over the course of the season because of the forced playing time for what would be backups. Starting in the top 10, but not too high is perfect–exactly where we want to be. When we were ranked #1 in ‘08 and we got all of the press, everybody marked the UGA game. This year they are not nearly as worried about us..Go Dawgs.

It seems like every year we have the same concerns offensively: A questionable offensive line to support a pro-style offensive scheme, the consistent doubts about the line’s abilities to run block for power runs between tackles and the inability to sustain pass blocking long enough for the quarterback to wait in the pocket for long pass routes to develop (and a shorter quarterback than the prototypical pro-style). My dream is that Bobo recognizes all of the above and institutes, at least during various points of the game, a modified spread offense….We’ve got a QB who can move and release the ball, speed and sure handed receivers for those 5-15 yard possession receivers, a blocking tight end and some running backs with ability. A proper spread, used at varying times can allow for more lengthy and fruitful possessions and take pressure off an inexperienced offensive line. I’m not talking about all the time, but I think a few possessions would do wonders for the Dawgs.

A freshman kicker(s) is always a cause for concern, but not sure it’s been an actual weakness in the past. As mentioned previously, the good ones come right in and start.

The coverage teams as a matter of better personel and added emphasis during the week. Sounds like they are addressing that. As Lilly pointed out the other day, nobody was complaining about that a few years ago when UGA was at the very top of those categories. I don’t think its a big mystery to any of them.

My guess is the starter at tailback will be Malcome or Samuel because they have been there the longest, but not because their the best back. fishhook dawg: I get what you’re saying, but don’t think Murray’s starting because he has seniority or “a gold card.” I’ve seen enough to believe he’s their best quarterback. And I agree that Malcome or Samuel will probably start the first game. But that will be because they are (a) a known commodity and (b) they will be more apt to know their assignments. That said, both Marshall and Gurley will play, and if either demonstrates they’re more talented than the other, they’ll play more accordingly. Conspiracy theories regarding playing time with the stakes such as they are in SEC football are ridiculous. Coaches have no incentive to play anyone other than the absolute best player.

UGA has enough good athletes to whip most of the teams on this year’s schedule without much problem. Last year Boise St and South Carolina, 2010 South Carolina and Arkansas, 2009 Ok State. It is time for UGA to take care of business in week 2 and play with urgency against Missouri and absolutely pound them.

Altamaha, So basically you are saying UGA doesn’t have a depth issue? I guess giving 7 walk-ons scholarships mean the roster management has been great. You can’t argue with someone who doesn’t believe they have a problem.

With the inconsistency we’ve shown the last few years under Richt, I’m with Old Fan. I just can’t get a good feeling about the Dawgs under Richt. Every year I have looked for the positives and developed my own perspective as to how we should approach the season based on our personnel. What should be our strengths we play to, and our weaknesses. Seems to me the coaches haven’t geared a game plan, offensively, and special teams wise to play to our strengths, and avoid our weaknesses. I honestly believe Richt and Bobo are our weak links, I know they’ve been working to improve themselves, let’s hope it’s worked and we get back to form.

That said if we get on a roll we could be good, however, this is the SEC and during our recent history we’ve struggled against UK and Vandy. USC, UF, AU, UT aren’t going to roll over for sure. Mizzou is an unknown. One thing I know for sure, it will take a special effort to win them all. Let’s play them one at a time and hope for the best.

As I ask all the time, what sort of a damn fool would NOT play his favorites?

The idea that ANY coach would so “favor” a particular player that he ignores the 100 others, his staff, his emploter, his family, his own standard of living and livelihood..and play them irrespective of thinking they were not the best option……has always seemed to me to be the single most ridiculous meme out here.

And the folks who say that are never talking about a once in a lifetime player either. They are talking about one of the thousands of players that a coach has contact with over a career.

Bottom line: That is a just a cowards way of not saying, I know more about football players than (coach).

Bad Dawg

My point was and is that UGA doesn’t have quality depth to stack up against the elites. Case and point LSU last year. This year seems like UGA will have the same problem due to poor roster management. Best case scenario is a Capital One Bowl appearance after losing the SECCG. Not a bad spot but not quite where I would like to see this team. I think 12 wins is a reasonable goal this year.

AltamahaDawg

August 15th, 2012
2:53 pm

My point is that of the 7, more are good enough to be regular players, and HAVE proven that………….so the award of thier scholarship does NOt prove a lack of depth. In fact, they contribute depth.

The other 3 and prove nothing about who is ahead of them in the line-up.

I’m saying, a team is judged by 70 best players, not the 10, 15 that are at the bottom of the list.

I think a couple of points are worth making: first, we haven’t had a dominant D in a long time. We were very good last year and dominant at times, but not dominant most of the time. This year I think we will be dominant a lot more of the time, and dominant defense is very hard to beat. Time will tell. It also helps the offense a lot by giving them the ball a lot. Second is that Malcome and Samuel are both going to be very tough backs. Maybe the toughest we have had in a while. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Malcome get 1000, even with the platoon system in full swing. Obviously, an injury or one of the youngsters turning out to be a prodigy might tone his numbers down. He is going to be good imo.

Graphite, worrying about playing Bama or LSU is a good problem to have, and on the scholarships Bad Dawg, they are a little weird, but I think it is one of those–make lemonade out of lemons–moments. The other thing is that it might, in an unexpected consequence, drastically improve UGA’s walkons in the future. If you have a choice of a scholarship at some lower ranked D1 school, but Georgia is your dream, you might decide against the scholarship and walk on at Georgia, realizing the opportunities. A lot of pro players come from schools like that for one very good reason–picking players on their ratings out of high school doesn’t predict the future perfectly. Some kids really blossom after HS.

LakeDawg

Whether UGA has 70 or 85 scholarships is IRRELEVENT to THIS year. Where it becomes a problem is down the road, because future players are not being developed. However, these walk on scholly’s are for a single year and UGA is signing a big class to get the numbers back up. I have ZERO worries about the numbers.

Check Alabama’s depth chart for reference. When I checked UGA’s I found 15 walk-ons who are in the 3-4 deep at various positions. I’m no expert on Alabama football but I doubt they don’t have many walk-ons. Not to mention Alabama blew every team out of the water last year outside of LSU which allows them to get some of their younger guys game experience. UGA struggled to put away every solid opponent they faced so their younger guys didn’t get that experience.

Lets use some logic here, Every program has walk ons that play, other wise with the 85 scholarship rule you would be unable to redshirt many of the incoming freshman. do you actually want your startrers playing on special teams when you leading Buffalo by 35 points or some of our lesser opponents. When your up 3 tds vs tech with 8 minutes you want Jarvis Jones or the starters covering punts in those situations? I want to see the better players play a bigger role in special teams but at times that matter .Georgia is lower than it should be on scholarships ,it is what it is but a large talented class is coming with at least 8-10 early enrolees,Georgia like many other schools recruit preferred walk ons, Time to move on and get over it.

Some of these fools are saying UGA wins the SECCG this year. They truly believe UGA can compete with Alabama or LSU for 4 quarters. That’s laughable.

It’s hard to believe some of you are actually college graduates, Columbus Dawg, you are the first to come to mind this evening. I base my opinions, and feelings on reality, not hope. I hope Richt makes progress and learns how to coach at this level. Reality is his first five years he “tremendously” benefited from the recruits of Jim Donnan and the defense of Van Gorder. When this program became the “entire” entity of Mark Richt it started to tank. At this point he is still a deer in the headlights. He doesn’t know how to handle prime time, JMO.

I love family, and take care of them, but I know how to differentiate family from business. Richt runs the team like family, and doesn’t have the backbone to make tough business decision.

Bad Dawg

It is laughable

Laughable cause this coaching staff shows every single year that a team with less talent Arkansas; Boise St, Central FL, Michigan St, Ok St, USC and the list goes on with half decent coach ends up taking that lesser talent and out coaching our coaching staff

Then when it comes to supierior talent or equal talent we have no chance; You never saw that with Dooley; I saw many times where UGA didnt have the talent that the other team had yet Dooley’s staff figured out a way to win

Flat, I will raise you one glass of kool aid. I’ve seen Richt teams quit after the coaching staff made bad decisions, got away from what was working, i.e. poor play calling by Bobo. Specifically the 2008 game vs UF. We were dominating early, but Bobo’s playcalling shortchanged the team and they reacted accordingly. These players know when their coaches take them out of a game and aren’t going to bust their butt. Richt hasn’t been able to build any semblance of chemistry, common committed objective, he’s simply not a great leader. I don’t think we achieve what we’re capable of under his watch.

Atlanta Dawg, I’m not one to profess that Dooley was a great coach. What qualifies Richt as a good coach and why do you still consider him one. Appears to me the program has been less than completely under control the last few years. Would appreciate a players honest perspective.

Atlanta Dawg is your typical AJC UGA fan. Either a super homer or a Mark Richt apologist. I don’t know what it is about Richt that everyone loves but I guess him being a Christian makes him the best man for the job. I thought winning big games consistently was his job but I guess if you beat Ga Tech and the bottom of the barrel SEC teams that means you are a great coach nowadays. We all should be happy to have such a nice man as our head coach.

Richt said his quarterbacks fumbled “every time they got touched” in Wednesday session. Richt says overall the Bulldogs played “pretty good” but he says that would only translate to eight or nine wins.Starter Aaron Murray completed 8 of 14 passes for 158 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Funny…..8 or 9 wins is what I have expected all along. That’s totally unacceptable with the schedule we have. Guarentee- Murray and his stupid mistakes cost us at least 2 games this year-

Alt Dawg–I used to argue with these idiots, but i just leave the trolls alone–let them troll. It is quite apparent they do not understand football; 1) do not understand the concept of 1 and 2s or 2 and 1s; 2) no comprehension of how to organize or execute quality practice measures and know its limitations; 3) do not understand recruiting numbers and how they work. Never argue with a stupid person, they will drag you down to their level, and then beat you to death with experience. If Murray and BoBo exude confidence in the play book and we understand that maybe Gurley and Marshall are the real deal, with a powerful Boo–runnin backs will be solved. I am not worried about the defense too much–we fix TOs everyone will be surprised how hard it is to score on our D–also we need to get them off the field to rest–O needs game sustaining drives–we’re getting there (obviously Crowell wasn’t the guy–I thought as many did he was–bad attitude). I think we’ll be fine. GO Dawgs!!!!
