ATHENS – Let the hype begin.
Georgia coach Mark Richt tried to downplay the performance of tailback Todd Gurley in Wednesday’s scrimmage. The freshman from Tarboro, N.C, led the Bulldogs in rushing for the second time in as many scrimmages this preseason. This time with 87 yards on 7 carries, two touchdowns — including a 66-yarder – and two receptions for another 22 yards.
But Richt was unable to dampen the excitement of Georgia’s players, who are making up their own mind about what they’re seeing from the young back.
“Special,” senior safety Shawn Williams said. “When I’m standing on the sideline and watching, all I can say is, ‘Wow!’ I don’t want to say too much, but when I saw that [number] 3 running down through there today, I was like, ‘that’s going to be a Trent Richardson right there.’ That’s what I can say. Big and fast, that’s all I can see.”
Said wide receiver Chris Conley, who had a pretty good day himself with 4 catches for 114 yards and a score: “I’m seeing a lot of great things out of Todd. He’s definitely maturing fast. He’s definitely picking up the plays very fast. He’s finding the running lanes, he’s got great vision and he’s actually got a lot of speed for a guy who’s that big. He has a knack for staying on his feet when he gets hit and he’ll just keep moving. It gets me very excited whenever you see a running back who can create plays like that when there’s really nothing there.”
Gurley also led all Georgia backs in the first scrimmage of the preseason last week. He had 6 carries for 58 yards and a 40-yard TD run in that one
Richt was excited about what he saw, too. He was just a little more measured in his assessment of Gurley in what he otherwise described as a “pretty good” scrimmage.
“Well, he had one big run,” Richt said. “I forget the situation but the one that broke out I think was a short-yardage run. A lot of times that happens. . . . But, yes, he’s done well and I’m impressed with him. I was impressed with the running backs today. They all ran well.”
Keith Marshall also averaged 12.4 yards per carry (5 for 62) and busted a 52-yard run. Richard Samuel had 6 for 40 with a TD and Ken Malcome added a TD and 35 yards on 5 carries.
“So it was nice to see that for the offense,” Richt said. “Not for the defense.”
Overall, Richt was had a negative view of the Bulldogs’ 90-minute scrimmage, which featured eight turnovers, including a fumble and an interception from each quarterback. There were highs such as the No. 1 offense scoring on its first three drives; and lows, such as the No. 2 offense driving the length of the field to score on the No. 1 defense.
“I thought we looked like a pretty good team,” Richt said. “But pretty good is about 8-4, maybe 9-3 if you’re lucky. We’d like to do better than 8-4, but that’s about how we played today. It wasn’t just awful but it wasn’t great. . . . I didn’t see a team that was ready to be great. I saw a team that was still pretty good. So I wasn’t that thrilled about it.”
Other notable stats from the scrimmage:
Probably the best news: Richt said there were no significant injuries that will knock anybody out of any upcoming practices.
The scrimmage was closed to media but here’s the “unofficial official stats” offered by Richt afterward:
RUSHING
PASSING
RECEIVING
DEFENSE
KICKING
PUNTING
About those turnovers
Richt was clearly aggravated by all the turnovers, which included fumbles by four different quarterbacks and three interceptions.
“I saw a lot of bad things,” Richt said. “I saw three bad interceptions, just bad throws. Every time a quarterback got touched, they fumbled the ball. They’re not supposed to get tackled but sometimes they’ll get touched. Everytime they got hit a little bit, they fumbled the ball.”
Murray struggled with ball-security a year ago, throwing 14 interceptions and losing five fumbles. It marred an otherwise productive season in which he passed for 3,149 yards and 35 touchdowns.
“We’ve got to take care of the ball; we can’t be careless with the ball,” Murray said. “I think we’ve done a great job all of camp of not having many interceptions or fumbles. . . . Today we weren’t as sharp as we need to be. We had a couple of fumbles in the pocket where we weren’t keeping two hands on the ball at all times. We’ve just got to be more careful.”
Richt said some of the carelessness could be explained because the quarterbacks don’t get hit during the preseason.
“Sometimes they’ll relax because they know they’re not going to get hit and they can make that an excuse if they want to,” he said. “But the bottom line is, just like we tell the running backs, when we run a play, you better bring that ball back to the manager. I don’t care if the whistle blew and they ripped it out. The ball came out [four] times between our quarterbacks on what wasn’t even a vicious tackle or anything like that. So we better get better at that.”
Williams said the defense deserves some credit for so many balls hitting the ground.
“We were real aggressive,” he said. “We were trying to force the issue. We forced a lot of turnovers. Rambo forced a fumble, I had an interception, Corey Moore had a nice interception and B-Smith had a couple of pass-breakups. So we did our job.”
Conley goes deep
Conley, a sophomore flanker from Paulding County, had one of the biggest plays of the scrimmage when he hauled in a pass from Murray for a 70-yard score. It was one of four catches he had to lead the Bulldogs receivers on Wednesday.
“We were doing a great job with play-action today,” said Conley, who 288 yards as a backup last season. “The defense bit on a fake and Aaron made a great throw. It was a play-action boot(leg) and the cornerback bit. Great pass.”
Drew plays big in return
Sophomore Ray Drew was unable to practice for a week due to a concussion. But not only did he return to live action on Wednesday, he was one of the defensive standouts in the Bulldogs scrimmage with four tackles.
“I believe this was a big-statement scrimmage here,” said Drew, who moved to defensive end from outside linebacker. “This was the last scrimmage we’ll have as a team before we start actually preparing for Buffalo. So this was a chance to show coaches that I’m ready and that I can actually play. . . . Being able to get out there and show them I know what I’m doing and can go full speed and make plays helped me out.”
SI tabs Dogs No. 9
Georgia was picked No. 9 in the Sports Illustrated preseason rankings released on Thursday. The Bulldogs were picked No. 6 in the USA today/Coaches poll released earlier this month. The Associated Press poll comes out on Saturday.
Picture Day on Saturday
Fans’ Picture Day will be held Saturday in the Reed Plaza area of Sanford Stadium. Tickets are required for access to the area where Richt and the bulldog mascot “Russ” will be located. Those tickets will be distributed at 8 a.m. Saturday to the first 150 fans east end ticket window on East Campus Road.
The Georgia cheerleaders will be available from 1-5 p.m, Russ and other UGA sports teams from 1-3 p.m. and football players and Richt from 3-5 p.m.

What really concerns me is whether or not CMR and CMB are willing to throughout the game plan if something is working very well. In the past if we are running well, they want to pass and vice versa. Remember the Bowl game with Texas A&M a few years back? They couldn’t stop our running game and for whatever the reason CMR and CMB decided to run it down their throat. Nearly every play was a running play! We even lined our fullbacks in the I.

The offense seems like they are going to be scoring a lot of points. Since everyone has repeatedly stressed that Georgia won’t be playing any good teams at all this year, even if the defense gives up a few scores it won’t matter anyway.

Richt continues to downplay Gurley’s superior performances, sounds familiar, did the same junk with Thomas & Ealey until they got sick of it and transferred.
Keep it up Richt, Gurley will transfer, just like Ealeyu & Thomas did, and they’ll find a coach who sees what they do, and your two favorites, Samuel & Marshall will get all the reps.
And that 8-4 season will be your year.
P.S. Speaking on 1 big play, Marshall was 4 rushes for 10 yards and 1 rush for 52 (Well, Keith Marshall has had 1 big run in 2 games, the rest of his carries were for a 2 yard average), so Marshall is the one Richt should be making THAT comment about, CERTAINLY NOT GURLEY.

Don’t worry so much about Missou. They have no O-line anymore. They had 2 starters go down with season ending injuries in their first scrimmage. Their LG was a 5th year Senior. Guess all that work Murray did with the Manning brothers didn’t pay off, if he can’t complete more than 57% against the No 2 defense.
Another interception, and a fumble. After Murray’s fourth Spring, really see why Mark Richt is concerned. Murray couldn’t get the ball to Tavarres King against the No 2 pass defense. This is the worst possible news.
That kind of performance by Aaron Murray, against the UGA No 2 defense, wouldn’t beat Mizzou, GT, Auburn, Florida, or South Carolina.
Not surprised Hutson Mason struggled against the No 1 defense. The No 1 defense was solid against the pass, going against the back up No. 2 set of receivers and the No 2 oline
Concerning, the No 1 defense is NOT solid against the run as Malcome & Samule both averaged over 6 yards per carry.

Get off all of this 1s vs 2s whining. When you are trying to develop a young OLine the last thing you need is for their confidence to be destroyed in a scrimmage. They need to experience success, not get stonewalled by Jenkins, Geathers, Washington, A.Jones and crew. 1 vs. 2 also develops more depth. Can you imagine the whining if we read poor offensive stats of 1O vs. 1D? No team is going to scrimmage 1s against each other for more than a handful of plays 2 weeks before season opener.

The stats are overblown in scrimmages. Georgia’s defense should be really good this season and maybe some of their guys are taking longer to get into game shape than the offensive guys. I have watched Georgia’s defense play a lot and I think they were very good last season, but got worn down at times and I feel that may have been due to a lack of depth. I’m not sure how good the secondary will be until the suspended guys are back, but I know the defensive line should be deep with Smith, Geathers and Drew coming off the bench.

We upset GA Tech the year he started (Tech was ranked top 5 at home that game if yall forgot) because we didn’t allow him to throw the ball. Grantham’s defense DID NOT give up 38 per game. Special teams gave South Carolina a free touchdown and then Murray’s pick-six and Crowell’s fumble basically handed South Carolina two more touchdowns. Then the breakdown on the o-line gave Murray no time to throw resulting in a scoop and score from Melvin Ingram. Against LSU, we certainly looked bad on defense in the second half but we didn’t have much depth on the d-line at all and couldn’t rotate guys like most teams can. Tyson was out and we had no quailty backups on the line. LSU got 14 puts from the Honey Badger’s TD and pick 6 by Claiborne. IN reality the defense played good, but they were not GREAT. You have to look and realize points a team gives up are nto always the defense’s fault. You can’t blame Grantham for Murray throwing a pick. The same thing in the Michigan State game, a pick 6 gave them a free touchdown. Not the defense, BC.

Nick, you must be new to football. The way defensive stats work are, things like interceptions or fumbles by the UGA offense that are immediate touchdowns, count against defensive scoring, as do punt/kick return td’s by opponents, as do offensive scores by opponents. Didn’t know if you were aware, but on cfbstats, UGA shows over 38.8 points a game in defensive scoring, against ranked teams in 2011. YOU mgith WISH it didn’t count, but unfortunately, IT ALL COUNTS.

Dear BC,
A lot of times UGA calls two plays at a time and then the QB selects the play at the line of scrimmage. If you’ll notice the QB holds up one or two fingers. I would have to look at my playbook to remember the name of this system but CMR and CMB have done this with every QB. From what I understand also, the QB rarely calls the “audible” that you are referring to. Instead, the team may call a play with a tag and the QB has the freedom to take the tag off the play call . For instance, the play is called Adam 13-2. Adam means the guard is pulling and going to double team, the number 13 means the QB is under center, and the number 2 means the play is run to the right. So the play Adam 13-2 is called and if the offense has what it needs in order to double team effectively the play is run. If the defense doesn’t give what is needed for the offense to double team effectively then the tag is taken off and the play 13-2 is run. Just FYI, this is how Florida State ran their system until Jimbo took over as head coach. They may still run this system but I’m not sure.

BC, I don’t care what a site says about our defense. It’s not the D’s fault is someone on offense screws up just because a statistical system says it does… yes, it counts from a “scoring defense” number, but it doesn’t tell the real tale of how the defense performed.

UGA vs the game cocks in 2011 a pick 6, a pick that was returned to darn near the goal line, a fake punt td, a sack fumble td, which means that even though stats would say the def gave up the whole 45pts, people with football IQ know that I just named 28 points that the def shouldn’t be responsible for which means that 17 points, they were responsible for. Stats again mean nothing. They don’t tell the complete story.

My whole point in informing you about what you claim is an “audible” is not really an audible and I was using that to point out that you don’t know what your talking about when it comes to football. Just because you sit at home and play madden all day doesn’t mean you understand the game. Statistics don’t show the entire story. I bet, if you looked you would find that Willie M’s defenses gave up more TD’s from outside of the redzone than inside the redzone.

Willie’s D’s gave up 48% in 07′, 63% in 08′, and 53% in 09′.

I love Richard, his heart, hard work ethics, team player, do the right thing attitude on and off the field, ect… But yall know he has never gotten out of anybodys way when he runs the ball. His little one and two yard carries just dont cut it.
But I have to give it up to him in the Florida game last year. He played like man now! His determination was one of the differences in that game down toward the end.

0-12 thru 6-6 and richt gets fired on the spot
7-5 he probably still goes and we make a play for Kirby
8-4 or 9-3 – the AD makes some lame excuse as to the positive direction of the program and great 30+ recruiting class and we go chik fila or outback
10-2 is the most likely. We lose 2 close Ones and miss out on the big time once again. Status quo.
11-1 – we are back – bcs bowl
12-0 – hell freezes over and tide roll melts

OKC, you have to keep in mind that scrimmage numbers never really make much sense. Vasser had 3 sacks and JJ had one. I would expect the defense to play better, but considering the defense lost only one solid guy off last year’s squad (Boykin), it’s hard to expect any reason why we would regress. I think the defense had some guys out there who were out of shape or banged up pretty badly. Remember that John Jenkins was out of shape at the start of camp and wasn’t effective early on.

Murray had a good scrimmage the first time but this time his turnovers started showing up again. Last year Murray was great in some games but in the games we lost Murray averaged 3 turnovers. CMR can’t hope that he improves and just leave him in there like he did last year if he starts turning the ball over. You know if Murray is going to have a good game or not. I don’t mind losing to a better team but when you beat a team as bad as we beat South Carolina last year and lose because of turnovers and no leadership it just hurts your heart. We can’t have that this year.
Both Gurley and Marshall had a lot of yards but when you take away their one long run each , both only averaged 2 to 3 yards. They need to average 5 to 6 yards to keep the yardage tapes moving up the field. We don’t need a bunch of three and out like last year.

CMR won’t let Murray and the other QB’s get tackled , fearing they may get hurt but doing that won’t help them learn ball security. About BC. If stats say Thomas and Ealey were great backs then stats are for losers. Thomas was small and surprisingly slower than you would have thought. Also couldn’t count on him. Ealey would have made a good 3rd string back for a top SEC school and should not have been best we had. Too slow and little power. Bad attitude in practice and had to go for good of team. SI picking the Dawgs #9 is telling. They, historically, have not been one of the kinder news sources when it comes to UGA. Young backs busting a couple of big runs against the #2 defense does not a Trent Richardson make. I’m not a downer Dawg, but let’s not place a world of expectations on another freshman’s shoulders. We have had this going on ever since Murray was qb. Senseless interceptions and fumbles…..interceptions and fumbles that lose ball games. Nahh……GA goes 9-3. We could do worse. Prediction: We lose at least one game in Columbia, 2 others in the SEC and struggle with Tech. We could lose to Vandy, TN, FL or AUB. In 2012 we have Harton, and the two NC boys Gurely and Marshall, Boo Malcome with a season under his belt and a R Samuel, now having made the adjustment back to RB and THE HERO of the Florida game.
UGA is far better than they were one year ago and without IC. If the O line can stay healthy and develop some thin depth, UGA on ) should be much better. I staill worry about Murray, as he is a shaky, nervous dude in big games and with pressure in his face.

Gurley, like Mason, is probably doomed. He seems to be the best at his position. Murray seems to have picked up right where he left off last year. Int and fumble. Therefore, we will redshirt Mason. Makes sense.

To say that the defense is respondsible for Murray’s fumble when the gamecock’s defense scored on his turnover is ultimately unreasonable. Turnovers hurt this team more than anything else. I believe the outcome would of been different had Mr Richt started Ken Malcome and bench Aaron Murray at some point for turning the ball over. I think Aaron Murray believe that he is entitle to turn the ball over because no one never held him accountable.
This season shouldn’t be about Aaron Murray, OL, defense, rbs, and the assistent coaches – this season should be about Mr Richt’s decision making and his coaching ability.

Trap games this year. Tenn,Vandy and Tech….Vandy has like 18 starters coming back and so does Tenn.
Games we could play well and lose. SC & Fla.
A game we could walk in unprepared and get killed. A Van Gordor coached seasoned Auburn team.

Vandy has 13 starters returning, not 18. Vandy lost key seniors, especially on defense. They will go 6-6 or maybe 7-5. Hope they beat SC but not likely. They won’t beat us either

I like CMR trying to keep Gurley’s head fitting inside the helmet. More meaningful would be to take away the RB and WR and QB breakaway plays and then look at the numbers. 1st O against 2nd D is always gonna yield some big plays. Of concern to me is that three of the top four tacklers were DBs. Maybe that’s a product of a lot of pass vs run plays, but if they’re tackling on runs, we’ve got problems up front. Chip, what was the run/pass play call split against the 1st D?
Glad to see Rome, Drew and JHC showing up. There’s talent in the backfield, albeit still learning to block, I’m sure. Now, if that O-line can just gel and start moving people…

“…running back who can create plays like that when there’s really nothing there.”
**************************************
I was excited until I got to that sentence by Conley. Look at the stats – about 2 yds per carry when you take out the long runs by Gurley and Marshall. If our O-line can’t consistantly open holes vs our #2 D . . .
That line better grow up and get better in a hurry – these talented young backs can’t do it by themselves.

You are a hater and an idiot. Mason was wanted by no major colleges. UGA gave him a scholarship because he loved UGA and they thought he would be a great back up. That is all he will ever be. I don’t know about tech as a trap game. It’s a game we can lose, but not because of that. I’d say TN gets full attention too, Especially since its right after Vandy. Not sure you can have back to back traps game either. Tempted to say Vandy could be a “trap”. Except they usually give us a good game, and that is to surprise.
Not sure what would cause them to be casual or unprepared going to Auburn. I’d doubt that very much.

That is a nasty looking scar on Gurley’s right leg. That had to hurt.
At least CMR ain’t pumping sunshine this year.

I read where someone posted that Mizzou is counting UGA as a victory already. I sure hope they are! Talk about a game that Murray needs to prove and get that monkey off his shoulder. I would really like to see more receptions from our RB/FB – TEs on swing & screen-passes. Glad to see J. Rome get a couple, but why not crank it up this year? I am so afraid we will run into a stout Defensive line that stuffs us and CMB will not be prepared to shake it outside to spread the D. This will open up the middle. S.C. is not going to let us just run between the tackles AND they aren’t planing on giving Murray time to throw. Coach Bobo needs to be prepared better this year than last year. I was encourged by the spring -game, we ran a lot of end-around, swing, screen & halfback passes and moved the ball really well. I think getting to the outside is the key to opening the middle. Thanks for the updates…

that is hilarious. You called Marshall “one of Richt’s pet underachievers.” Since he is a true Frosh who has not yet played in a game (because the games haven’t started yet) how exactly has he underachieved so far in his UGA career?
Do you not like the way he drinks water at the breaks? The way he ties his shoes in the locker room before practice?
I am with you 100%. I can’t believe that guy hasn’t led UGA to an SEC title yet. What a bust, the guy doesn’t have a single rushing yard for UGA so he was obviously overhyped and they way Richt has stuck with him just shows Richt’s blind loyalty. He should have been dismissed from the team 45 minutes after signing day. My understanding is that his signature went under the signature line twice and it leaned to the right. I wouldn’t allow a back like that on MY team if I were in charge.

I’m more concerned at this point with the team’s overall physical conditioning. I watched a replay of last year’s Florida game, and our O-line was sucking wind against an undersized defensive front. Crowell was so out of shape, he had his hands on his hips after two consectutive runs. At that point in the season, there is no excuse for guys being that under-conditioned. All of the talent, all of the X’s and O’s don’t mean squat when your team can’t either “out run” or “run over” the opponent. The last few years, we haven’t been able to do either. If that hasn’t been fixed, then we are getting excited about nothing. Period.

“The No. 1 offense started out great and after the No. 2 offense scored, it must have inspired the No. 2 defense because the No. 2 defense stoned the No. 1 offense for the next three drives and a one-minute drive. The No. 1 defense got scored on on the goal line. I didn’t like that. The offense scored one out of two from the 2-yard line and the 1-yard line. That wasn’t that impressive.”

Everyone, please ignore BC. The guy is in love with himself and wants to use this board to argue. Don’t encourage him. His anger toward Murray is getting old… the dude was a sophomore last year, cut him some slack. If he commits a ton on turnovers against Missouri, I’ll get worried. But I’m looking forward to an improved season from Aaron. If the running game and o-line come to play, Murray will make less mistakes because he won’t feel the need to carry the team.

I thjnk the talent on the field is going to be ok, but I am still worried about Bobos play calling. It is clear that the stregnth of this team will be its recievers, Tight end and QB, so I feel that Georgia should pass to set up the run, until the offensive line gel. What we do inside the red zone will be very important this year being the the Oline is not a proven group to start the season. I think eventually the O line will be one of the best in the conference, if they saty healthy.

Its a very simple thing to do when you have competition! Whoever is winning the competition should win the starting position. The coaches, the media, and even his own teammates are talking about Gurley! Obviously he is doing something right. Whats so hard about starting the better player? I would be shocked if Gurley is not the guy who is starting against Buffalo and I must also say that it makes other recruits hesitant about coming here if they know they can beat a player out in practice but not be allowed to start! It makes no sense

I think we will beat MO and certainly hope that we do, but it is a dangerous game as most early season games are.
They have some talent, especially at WR. It is at their place and they will be excited about getting a win in their first SEC action.
We have more talent, but there are several games over the past two seasons where we lost to a less talented squad and other games that we won, but were awfully close.

Go Gurley and Go Dawgs. Sounds like Richt and company have us headed in the right direction. Let’s see how everything they have worked on transfers to the field in Sept. Schedule sets up nicely for us this year. Will not be a cakewalk like everyone says but it is very manageable and we could easily be 11-1 or 12-0 going into the SECCG. If we remain healthy we could have something for the SEC west this year. JUST SAYING………………………….

King and Insider…makes sense to me on NT comments. Not reading too much into practice notes and stats but its encouraging to see plays bein made on both sides of the ball, by second teamers!! Gonna see alotta playing for true freshmen again this year…says alot by the talent being brought it, regardless of the numbers or stars. Can we just finish the season and fourth quarters?? thats what it’ll come down to.

I was glad to see CMR finally give some critiszium toward Murray for a change. As you pointed out in this blog, Murray turned the ball over 19 times (14 interceptions & 5 lose fumbles) last year in 12 games, which averages 1.58 per game. So yesterday’s scrimmage with an int & fumble puts him right on course for what he did last year. Murray turned it over yesterday without being touched. Murray knows that whatever he does in practice or games doesn’t matter because he’s CMR’s boy. Any running back or wide receiver that turned the ball over as much as Murray, would get benched.

Calm down people about the defense not playing well. First, the # 1 offense runs against the # 2 defense and the #2 offense runs against the #1 defense. Second, scrimmage stats mean nothing because your starters dont play much. You dont have guys like Jarvis Jones out there very long. Everyone knows what he can do so there is no need for him to be out there much. Kind of like pre-season NFL, scrimmages are to see what the younger guys can do. That being said, I think Marshall and Gurley are going to be a great 1-2 punch for us this year! GO DAWGS

You can’t hide talent ! If Gurley is the man then he will be there. KM & RS have earned their stripes. Early on in RS career he had fumbleitis. I didn’t see that from him last year. KM has put a rocky start behind him. He is a bruiser of a back and will show the way for UGA. Marshall and Gurley will have brilliant careers at UGA. Next year they will dominate the SEC with their talent, although I suspect all of the KM doubters will be shut up this year. What about the recruiting class Ga is putting together for next year? They are addressing immediate needs with JC guys, and recruiting hard nosed kids that want to work hard! GO DAWGS !

Despite an interception and a fumble for quarterback Aaron Murray, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback actually had an “outstanding” scrimmage.
“The one interception he had was a protection blowdown and he had to run up in the pocket and the DB made a great play,” Bobo said. “The one interception was really not his fault.”

I was terrific to read this story. It bruoght back memories of my youth when my mother would open her small file with recipes hand written from her sisters and some recipes she had written from memory. My daughter now has this file and on special occasions she will cook for me. Since my mother is now passed away, my daughter preparing these recipes that I remember as a child is very heart warming.
