Video: Georgia’s biggest surprises, greatest concerns at halfway point of preseason practice

Following is a video chat I had with Noah Coslov of CineSport about Georgia football Tuesday afternoon. We’ll be having these chats weekly for the rest of the preseason and throughout the regular season. In this “episode,” Coslov asks me me to talk about the biggest surprises so far, work still to be done and try to assess the Bulldogs’ ability to handle high expectations this season.

The season, just like every season, will boil down to leadership and coaching. If Richt and Bobo can’t get an SEC ring this year, they need to catch the midnight train to Tallahassee…

Frankly, I, too, am a bit surprised with our ranking given the changes in the club this year. I suspect the hype is because of the defense which had the potential to be outstanding. For some reason, I am not as concerned about the line because they were underachievers in my book. Let’s see what a new group can do.

Every team has holes to fill….UGA has less holes to fill than SC, Florida, Bama, Arky or even LSU….go dawgs….

If you seriously care whether UGA is an UGA or a Russ you can’t be a true fan. To think for one second that it matters is ridiculous. Russ looks enough like UGA for me and I’m an alumni and season ticket holder. Let’s concentrate on something more important like will all the UGA co-eds still be going with that blak mini-shirts and cowboy boot look this fall which drove my mind to dark places or where do they get those guys that work at the Taco Stand? They’ve looked exactly the same since the 70’s when I ate there. Is there some genetic experiment going on that produces these guys. Or is the Varsity still worh going to even though they won’t refill your coke for free and you can’t get filled up for less that $10 anymore. Those, my friend, are things to sit up late and lose sleep over, not Russ’ gene pool or lack there of.

Go Dawgs!

And seriously, sic ‘em Doody, after several bourbon and cokes (Melted ice and that black particulate that always ends up in the bottom of your cup after the game) can you truthfully say you can see Russ that clearly? My old and faded eyes are always following the nearest set of cowboy boots connected to a miniskirt in front of me headed to my car.

LOL, us against the world…. That’s funny… Small team… How many more excuses will you give this team… A team that has recruited in the top 10 for the last 10 years… I am a little surprised that there vaunted DC has not been in the news… Now there is a joke for ya…

That joke of a DC that has a DL that Tech won’t be able to block. 80 yards I think it was after halftime last year in a true physical, made them quit beatdown that was not near as close as the final 31-17 score.

The whole numbers thing is a big bunch of nothing.

You can only travel with 70 anyway and only 45 of them will play

Merritt Hall huh. That’s exactly why UGA can’t finish the drill! These offensive coaches are jokes! No way this guy should be in front of Richard Samuel or even the freshman. Only at UGA do they recruit 4 and 5 star talent to back up walk-ons. This kid was barely 200lbs. when he showed up to UGA. The weight that he’s added is blown up, not natural. When he gets stuffed constantly by naturally big LB’s and clogs things up, I can just hear all the rednecks now, just crapping on the Tailbacks. What a joke this program has become under Richt! you won’t see Saban, LSU or even Auburn giving out scolly’s in mass to walk-ons! UGA fans, please don’t expect to reach those 1980 expectations with the good Preacher at the helm.

Bernie Matt, are you Tide Roll posting on here under a different name? You know I warned you to stay off these blogs until you finished you critical thinking assignments.

If you are not Tide Roll, that post is definitely Tide Roll caliber, and that is not a compliment.

I will try to work you into my tutoring sessions if you wish to avoid being the recipient of brick bats on here from other posters.

I’m Bernie Matt, been around this town and around elite athletes a lot longer than most of you. I’m just telling you what the word is in my circles. You can take it for what it’s worth. If I had to confess, I would say that I probably want UGA to win more than most, it being the home state school and all. But I’m just telling you what the word is on the street.

This year for the first time ever, I am very fortunate enough to take up someones seats as a season ticket holder. Dream come true! Furthermore, with the schedule, I would love to see the Dawgs somehow eek out a win at the Dome and barbeque Southern Cals asses in molasses at the NC game.
That would for sure frustrate ESPN and their posterchild Barkley to no end. For that matter, any SEC team to shut em up once and for all……Go Dawgs!

So what you’re saying Bernie Matt is there should be no competition for a starting job? The 4 or 5 star recruit should automatically get the nod to start? You’re an idiot!!

Maybe we can get a walk on UGA.

Spanky – Agreed on Southerlin. Mack Strong may be the last, “great,” fullback we had. I wouldn’t even say that Henderson was great. Maybe is Veron could have stayed at fullback.

Bernie Matt

@ bug squasher – What competition? Richard is a 5 star recruit being told that “we need you to practice at 2 positions” not to mention the move to LB. And being told in the same breath, he hasn’t done enough to unseat the walk-on, whose only asked to concentrate on 1 position. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME! No i think you’re the idiot or grossly uninformed. Try someone on your own level. I got too much information! Way more than what’s reported in the AJC or the Athens Herald.

Seems like the TEAM attitude is really POSITIVE this year! Love what I am hearing and seeing. A lot of leadership from the “young guys” especially. I like the “hunger” these new players are bringing to the team

Bernie Matt

@ Bug Squasher – Also, just so you know. At programs that have won national titles recently, they put 4 and 5 star recruits on the field first and force them to either prove the hype or run down the field on the kick-off team. Then they proceed to recruit over them. That’s the way it’s really done with big-time winners.

hey bernie matt

What did Richt do in 2002, his 2nd year, that all the other national title coaches did?

Went 13-1
won the SEC

The difference is he was hosed out of the title game by 2 cheating programs. Also, the SEC was not getting the auto invite that they get now. Otherwise, he has his title.

And Merritt Hall is killing people in ractice and is up to 220 pounds. He broke a tackling sled he hit the dam thing so hard.

Don’t pretend you are a Dawg when you are not.

@ Dawgin Lex and Top Dawg – First, stop crying about 2002. Man that’s _hit getting old. Second, I already know what his weight is up to. I stated early he had put on muscle builders weight, but that’s not the natural size that needed to compete at the elite level for a FB in the SEC. Third, please don’t tell anybody else that you know what a player did to a blocking sled! It makes you look like a joke. (and I’m saying that as a favor to you). STUPID, blocking sleds don’t move side to side and they don’t hit back! I’m embarrassed to even respond to you. I now think that you are a woman on the other end of this blog, bragging about what a player did to a blocking sled. Lastly, you’re right CMR probably has forgotten a lot about football. The trick though, is to learn some new things cause this game changes just like every thing else.

I agree with Bernie. I cant beleive that a major school is giving 7 scolarships to walk ons. To answer the question.. No.. You wont see Urban Meyer or Nick Saben giving out these free rides to people that were not good enough to get a free ride in the beginning. What a Damn joke.

@ dawg whisperer – thanks for the advice. But I’m not losing any sleep. Just tripping on people who think they know. But I don’t talk to coach’s. If you want to know the real about a program. Talk to the players that are there or the ones being recruited. Even if the information is not accurate, perception of a program goes a long way. So for me, high school coach’s and prospects are a better resource.

IF you guys haven’t learned by now that this is all a ploy to fly under radar, then that proves none of youse guys know what you talking about. This is all a strategy to keep target of Dawgs back. UGA main weakness other than poor OL is the hype. These kids are in a candy store like a bull in china shop. Bernie Mac may have some validity to his info. Until UGA gains the swagger of a true powerhouse, CMR and the dawgs cant be radar riders!
