MORNING PRACTICE UPDATE
Updated with comments from coach Mark Richt . . .
ATHENS – Todd Gurley’s standout performance in yesterday’s scrimmage did not appear to alter the pecking order in Georgia’s offensive backfield.
Take it for what it’s worth, but Gurley was still running as third-team tailback when the Bulldogs went through drills early in Thursday’s practice. Gurley, a 6-foot-1, 218-pound freshman from Tarboro, N.C., was Georgia’s leading rusher in the first scrimmage of the preseason on Wednesday. He had 58 yards on six carries and scored on a 40-yard run.
When the running backs were doing drill work with coach Bryan McClendon Thursday morning, the rotation stacked up like this:
Again, it doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things. It’s pretty clear that all six of those players — plus Brandon Harton and Kyle Karempelis, too — are probably going to see action for the Bulldogs this season.
“They’re really rolling like they’re all co-No. 1s,” coach Mark Richt said. “It’s not like the Nos. 3 & 4 on the depth chart only get reps wit h the second team. WE’ve been repping everybody. The top couple of guys haven’t gone with the 2s.”
Malcome had 32 yards on five carries in Wednesday’s scrimmage, Harton seven for 25, Karempelis four for 15 and Marshall seven for 11. Coach Mark Richt downplayed statistics from the scrimmage based on the varying circumstances and lineups.
Murray on ESPN with Pollack
Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray and former Bulldog All-American linebacker David Pollack on Wednesday taped an edition of ESPN’s “Inside the Program” on campus. The segment is set to air duringon Thursday’s Sports Center.
Pollack and Murray discussed the ins and outs of the quarterback position, with Murray demonstrating skills including throwing the fade. Inside the Program is airing all this week on ESPN.
Pollack will serve as an analyst for ESPN’s Thursday Night Football in 2012 and will return as a host on ESPN’s College Gameday.
Injury report
Cornerback Branden Smith was in a green, non-contact jersey due to a shoulder contusion but was participating. Another new addition to the injury report was tailback Brandon Harton, who sat out with a hip contusion. . . . Fellow DB Damian Swann (neck) also remains in green. . . . Players who remain sidelined include DE Ray Drew (concussion), safety Marc Deas (hamstring), outside linebacker Dester Morant (shoulder) and tight end Hugh Williams (hand).
Richt’s “shout out” for Branden Smith
Richt opened his post-practice remarks Thursday by saying he wanted to give a “shout-out to Branden Smith.” He said the senior cornerback has stood out throughout preseason camp and going back to last spring really.
“He has been making plays every day. He’s playing with a lot of intensity every rep,. He l;ooks like a senior trying to lead out there. He doesn’t say much. He just plays hard and makes plays. Ive been really happy with what he’s been doing. He’s stood out. It just seems like something good has been happening with his play.”
Richt was asked if he thought Smith’s exemplary play could be connected to his recent announcement that Smith would not miss playing time despite his March arrest for marijuana possession. Smith accepted pretrial intervention in that case and passed UGA and court-ordered drug tests, so Richt wave the 10 percent competition suspension usually employed for marijuana-use violations.
“He’s known for a little while that he was going to play,” Richt said. “But I think to have it come out in the public probably was a boost for him and his family. But, you know, he had a great spring, too. He’s just practicing really hard. And he had his best summer by far from what the boys were commenting on. His stamina has been better throughout practice, and hopefully it will be throughout the season as well.”
O-line shows improvement
Asked for any insights he was able to make after reviewing video of Wednesday’s scrimmage, Richt said he liked what he saw from the offensive line.
“The No. 1 unit played very well I thought,” he said. “The No. 2 unit had some moments where they put it all together. . . . I saw guys individually getting better. So I think that group’s coming along.”
Some other observations from Richt:
On punt and kickoff return . . .
“The problem with kick return and punt return is we really haven’t gone live where you could say this guy is doing better than that guy or whatever. They’re catching punts in prepractive warmups and drillwork. The closer we get to the game we’ll have more opportunities to put them under a little pressure. Right now we haven’t gotten that far yet.
On place-kicking . . .
“Right now I would say that Marshall Morgan is our extra point and field goal guy. That’s what I’d say.”

You mean you would be able to pull yourself away from staring at pictures of Justin Beiber in a Tech uniform to give Branden Smith advice about drug use?

The AU football program had need of signing around 35 kids in their 2010 frosh class. Then, they loaded up with 34 or 35 kids and went out and won the MNC. It is a fact and it clearly illustrates that from time to time, very solid football programs do see higher player attrition rates than normal, so they go and and remedy that with targeted recruiting and life goes on. It did for AU two years ago and this coming year, UGA will also load up with around 35 frosh for the 2013 class. This is college football. Kids come and they go. Not all kids are really made out for college academically anyway. We ALL know that.
This year UGA ought to do very well on the field and possibly less so in 2013 but far better again in 2014 and 2015. This is the mark of a solid program. No, UGA is not an Alabama, nor do we want to be, nor do we expect to be.
UGA is academcis first, sports second, and has been for about 25 -30 years.

Running that many Backs in and out during important games will guarantee TURNOVERS. Richt should know by now that the old FSU offensive style no longer works, expecially in the SEC. If you can’t get a Back 20 carries at minimum, he won’t develop consistency and the result will be turnovers from trying to hard. Anyone who understands football knows this. Looks like another 8 or 9 win season due to this failed offensive philosophy which never seems to adjust to today’s strategy.

Chuck, When you running “that many backs” in and out …How many is that? What exactly do you think they intend on doing in that regards?

LSU doesnt typically have one back with 20 carried minimum. This past year was the first time Alabama had done so in years, probably because Richardson was far and away their best option. (some what like when Richt HAS done in that situation) But going back to Ingram/Richardson and Coffee/Ingram….Saban rotated those guys, under 20 carries. I bet we don’t see any Back at Bama getting 20 carries a game this year.
I would more tend to believe that a single RB getting over 20 carries is more a function of HAVING a guy who is just so much better than the #2 guy, and not so much the goal itself. Also, I have never seen Coach Richt to be very stubborn one way or the other. Like everybody else, it’s situational.
As far as that being an SEC thing, I think if you will look at the actual stats, 20+ carries has been the rare exception, not the rule, for quite some time. I think we have some coaches in the league that do “understand footbal”.

Last 4 out of 5 National Champs, all SEC teams, had a 1000 rusher:
2011, Richardson
2010, Newton
2009, Ingram
2008, Florida had 4 600 yard rushers
2007, Hester
If Richt really wants to win it, he needs a 1000 yard rusher.

What happened w Tree as FB? Is he hurt? I knew coaches were looking for a FB to lay someone out before preseason started. Who was the walk on FB they was talking about? Is is just hard to believe Tree got beat out by everyone, when Tree started all of last season.

We do need permanent RB. I hate when CMR and Boboboo takes out a hot RB during a game. It does not make any sense. I hate when a RB takes his self out of the game, also.

Hey BC…..From your logic Trent Richardson should have never started at Alabama. I mean against same opponets and defenses he had a less ypc than Eddie Lacy. Damn Saban is an idiot.

I don’t think you’ll find LSU or Alabama will give a back who consistently averages 2.9 yards per carry, like Samuel does, more carries than a guy who consistently averages 4.95 yards per carry, like Carlton Thomas did.
Most folks understand that 2.9 is 60% LESS productive than 4.95.
Now Gurley averages 10 yards per carry, Marshall 1, and Marshall is ahead of Gurley because he got to UGA a few weeks earlier, NOT because he performed well in the scrimmage.
Don’t want to keep losing the most productive back to transfer for the third straight year, because you don’t give him the ball enough.
Jumping to conclusions- what can you say?
August 10th, 2012
1:45 pm
A poster makes an assumption that after one scrimmage he can tell who UGA’s most productive back is.
A more amazing assumption is the suggestion that Gurley may want to transfer (he’s only been in school a few weeks) because he was not promoted after one scrimmage.
This is the type of simplistic thinking, going strictly by numbers, that leads to the conclusion that Ealey was Herschel’s peer because his ypc one year was similar. Or that AJ was not UGA’s best receiver because there were games from time to time when another WR had better stats.
Do you really think that if Gurley out gains Marshall practice after practice that he will not overtake him on the depth chart and get more carries?
