ATHENS – Georgia held its first full-scale, controlled scrimmage of the preseason at Sanford Stadium on Wednesday. Head coach Mark Richt called it a “good scrimmage” with “some bumps and bruises, but I don’t think anything came from it.”
Following are the “unofficial official stats,” as Richt likes to call them. Below that are some comments from coaches and players and general observations.
RUSHING
PASSING
RECEIVING
DEFENSE
KICKING
GEORGIA COACH MARK RICHT
“Overall the No. 1 units played well. The No. 1 offense actually scored touchdowns on their first three drives. The No. 1 defense didn’t allow but one first down on the first three drives. So I thought both No. 1 units were dominant, which I like this time of year.”
“Todd, he ran the ball well, but he had some good space provided for him at times where some other guys didn’t. I mean, Marshall had a great three-yard run one time but that doensn’t impress anybody unless you see it in person. I thought all the backs ran well really. There were a cpouple of times I didn’t think they hit it like they should have or could have. But it wasn’t bad.”
“He has started hot. He’s been hot this whole camp. He’s been outstanding. We’re all just praying that he stays healthy and he does well. He really has had a great camp. We were saying this a year ago.”
“Offensively I thought the pass protection improved, even with the No. 2 unit. There were still some sacks but, as many times as we threw it, there were some times [the quarterbacks] could stand up in there and make their reads and make a throw. I don’t know if the No. 1 offensive line gave up a sack.”
“I like it when my No. 1 defense is getting sacks. It doesn’t really bother me. You’ve got guys like [Bacarri] Rambo and [Alec] Ogletree, John Jenkins, Jarvis Jone and Cornelius Washington; you hope and expect to get sacks from those guys. If it’s you’re first unit getting beat real bad, then you get concerned. But I’m not too concerned because they’re going against some pretty good guys.”
WR MARLON BROWN
“It was from Hutson Mason. I was just kind of running down the middle of the field and he put it on me. I was wide open.
“At the beginning of the scrimmage I had a ball across the middle I should have caught. But I realaxed a little bit. It was an easy touchdown and I kind of dropped my hands a little bit and it went through my hands. After that I was like, Man, I’m not missing anymore passes today.”
SS SHAWN WILLIAMS
“[Alec] Ogletree got a good hit on short yardage on Todd Gurley. He hit him and I was like, ‘wow!’ I liked hjow it sounded. I got pretty hyped.”
Also, on freshman RBs . . .
“They’re doing real well. Both of them, Keith and Todd, they’re going to go I there and get the job done. They’re running the ball hard and not shying away from hits or blows. They’re trying to take it to you. I feel like we’re making them better an d they’re making us better.”
NG JOHN JENKINS
“It’s like a big tease, man. I’m just looking forward to the games. Just to be back in the stadium between the hedges gets you excited.”
INJURY REPORT
TIDBITS
While special teams was not the focus of Wednesday’s scrimmage, freshman place-kicker Marshall Morgan missed on his only attempt of the day. Richt could not say how far it was but did say the line of scrimmage was inside the 20-yard line, so it was “relatively short range.” Morgan did make all his extra points, however. . . . “You can tell they’re nervous,” Richt said of the kickers. “They’re human. Everybody’s talking about them. I’m sure they’re feeling it a little bit.” . . . Walkon punter Adam Erickson, a redshirt sophomore from Athens, has established himself as the holder from placement kicks. . . .
Freshman John Theus worked with No. 1 offense at right tackle on the No. 1 offense’s first possession. He’s competing with sophomore Watts Dantzler for the starting job. . . . Starting RG Chris Burnette was back in action on Wednesday. He split time with Dantzler. . . . Richt said he would ask the coaches to begin formulating the travel list for their respective positions so they might begin to assimilate a 70-man SEC roster.
Richt said the plan is still for Mason, the junior quarterback from Marietta, to redshirt this season. But Wednesday’s play distribution once again underscored that he remains Plan B should Murray be injured. LeMay (3-for-6, 44 yards, interception) got less work and that was limited mainly to the second and third units. “We’re going to work all three of those guys a lot,” Richt said. “Like I’ve said before, if something happens today, Hutson’s No. 2. Things could change throughout camp, but Hutson simply has a tremendous feel for what he’s doing. He’s got another year under his belt compared to LeMay. LeMay is getting there as far as progress. But as of right now, if something happened to Murray it would be Hutson.”

Don’t see how Murray going against the No 2 defense gets him ready for SEC competition. He needs to be going against the No 1’s. Nice to see his accuracy go up, and he finally threw a td pass this Spring, but geez, against the No 2 defense, come on man, TEST THIS GUY, get him ready if you’re convinced, for whatever dumbfounding reasons, that he’s the best QB on the team. Aaron is going pro this year and that leaves next year to Hutson. Lets hope Marlon lives up to all the hype that he came into Athens will. ALso give the rock to Gurley. He’s our new work horse. These are practice stats guys. Come on. Let’s not blow our wads just yet. As far as the Murray and Mason argument, this is getting old. We are all aware of Murray’s record against top ranked teams and we all know about the problems with int’s. As far as Mason is concerned, he looks good in practice but we dont know what he would do in the big game. Joe Cox had great stats in practice. Look what he did on game day. Murray is our best chance of winning this year, like it or not. That said, he better grow up quick and learn to throw the ball away. I’d like to see what Mason can actually do. Hopefully we’re up enough on Buffalo and Florida Atlantic (or whoever) enough to see both Mason and Lemay get some action. We need to start preparing another QB.

Aaron Murray had almost as many passing attempts (17) as the entire team had rushing attempts (29). None of the running backs that participated in this scrimmage have any experience whatsoever but not a single one of them got more than 7 carries. How in the good holy hell are we going to develop a running game if they aren’t doing any damn running in practice? Meanwhile they let our proven QB who everyone knows can run this offense take 17 passing attempts?

I disagree with the comment above complaining about Murray having almost as many pass attempts (17) as all back had running attempts (29). That is actually about half as many passes as runs, and we need to work the receivers as well as the backs. We also don’t know the focus from the coaches perspective. They won’t run each practice with the same focus. Trust that the coaches are doing the best to get ready for the season, and hit Taco Mac for your two a days.

My take is that they know who can “run” the ball. Having them do it over and over and over in drills is how will develop those instints. But they wanted to see what they could do in live action, when they sent the LB blitzing, which could be harder to simulate in drills, and that why they had less rushing attempts, and more passing situations set up in the scrimmage today. I would think this was not intended to be a game plan for any particular opponent, but rather working on some specific things. Reasonable guess?

I will use the same analogy that I alway use in response to this typical argument. Just because I don’t know how to fly a plane doesn’t mean I can’t say something to the pilot when the damn thing is nosediving to the ground at 600 mph.
“Actually 3 of the 5 RB that played today have playing experience. 2 of them have been starters before.”
Oh give me a break. You should be a politician. Harton started against New Mexico freaking State. That doesn’t count. Malcome’s only start came against Tech and the bowl game as far as I can remember. We didn’t even run the damn ball against Tech hardly. This is a green group. They need reps, reps and more reps. Aaron Murray does not need reps. We know what he can do.
“I disagree with the comment above complaining about Murray having almost as many pass attempts (17) as all back had running attempts (29). That is actually about half as many passes as runs”

True. If the plane was in a 600 mph nosedive, I would say it doesnt take a pilot to figure that out. If that was in any way an good analogy to the state of the program, that might be a good point.
But if you were trying to tell an actual real pilot what the exact degree of right aileron to use given a certain airspeed and cross wind, and you don’t know what the hell you are talking about, you might want to go take a seat and let the professional do his job.

In the meantime, we’ve lost basically every big game that we’ve played in, had a losing season and have been completely irrelevant. It doesn’t take a head football coach to know that getting blown out by 32 points in the SECCG is not a good thing. You see, how it works is, the point of the game is to win. When that isn’t happening something is wrong.

At least I respond to your points. You ignore any that don’t help your argument, such as how getting blown out by 32 points might be an indication that this coaching staff doesn’t know what its doing.

I guess all those things you mentioned is why Murray is considered one the top college QBs in the nation this year, right? How many TD passes did Murray throw last year? And I don’t think Murray is the one that let Javon Clowney rush in untouched on that decisive play….and turnover TD…..last year….and let all those Michigan State DL and LBs through to him during the bowl game. Give Murray time and he is going to pick even the best defenses apart…..don’t…and he become an average to less than average QB….as any QB would. And by the way….Mr. Mason…has never faced teams in the SEC with the game on the line…..but he has looked good in mop up situations and in preseason practice…which does not mean much.

Once again the word is Hutson Mason outperforms Murray again in the first scrimmage. Players are already voicing that Mason gives the team a better chance for success and winning.
No one can be positive about what results will be under the leadership of Mason but one thing is for sure, we know Murray hurts the team and has since day one.
WHY IN THE HELL IS RICHT SUCH A PANSY FOR MURRAY?????
UGA has no second string defense, absolutely no second string — so Murray competes against walk ons and kids just out of high school and in thier first college scrimmage, QUIT BLOWING SMOKE SPORTS WRITERS, tell the truth about what is taking place, let the readers and fans then decide.

The thing that bothers me is less than 50% of the plays were running plays. I know its just one scrimmage, but it continues a theme of “FSU” style football from Richt. All of the signs I look for before a season have been positive for the Dawgs and I expect a big season. However, the lack of a running game troubles me deeply and this running to passing ratio is not a good sign.

Murray 2 & 9 vs. top 25. He did have a couple of decent wins against GT & Aub this year. The other wins were against bad teams with bad records.
ESPN’s KC Joyner said Murray was No 2 most OVER valued player in the NCAA. I tend to agree.
But I am a BIG Huston Mason fan, he has earned my respect by the way he has outperformed Murray so consistently, I think Mason would have helped us go 14-0 last season, 5 or 6 interceptions, tops, and @70% completions, maybe 10 sacks. He’s quite a bit taller than Murray.

When a Gator fan makes more sense than us Dawg fans in evaluating our team than we do it is sad. It was a scrimmage and only shows us little bits and pieces of what the team might be. 1. Murray is not as good as Mason

3. That Jarvis Jones is going to play ever down in preseason scrimages and Connor Norman will be help out to protect him for the season (since Connor Norman has already proven that he is one of Georgia’s best players)
4. That Devin Bowman is going to make more tackles than John Jenkins or Geathers this year.

I don’t some people understand why the 1st string offense plays against the 2nd string defense and same for 2 string offense to play against the 1st string defense. It’s not so much to get the 1st stringers ready, maybe just broken in and put in game mode. It’s more for the 2nd stringers to get some needed reps against the 1 squad. You don’t win without some depth and knowing your depth going into the season you need to put some pressure on your backups. The backups you see performing well in fall practice will eventually make it to some starting jobs during the year via injuries /attrition or just flat outplaying the other fella.

Practicing 1’s against 2’s is normal operating procedure in football. The reasoning behind it is you want you #1’s to have some success so they know what it looks like and have practice completing the game plan, especially if one side is dominant. Later on in the season it makes sense to have more 1’s against 1’s scrimmages.

Dawgfan, the plane analogy might not be a great one. If your pilot doesn’t realize he’s in a 600mph dive, and you do, you definitely need a new pilot; unfortunately, you probably won’t live to see another one. UGA football is hardly in a dive. A better analogy might be that a terrible rumbling occurs under the plane while you are in a steep descent 10 miles from your destination. You tell the pilot something is wrong, when he informs you that everything is under control–you are just hearing the gear and flaps extending. I would dare say that Richt and Bobo have collectively forgotten more about Xs and Os than most of us put together will ever know…

There are a lot of complaining from bloggers that either don’t listen to what Mark Richt has to say or have no idea what they are saying about what it takes to get a team ready to play GAMES in the SEC.
What you said about why the #1 Offense go’s against the #2 Defense and the # 2 Offense go’s against the # 1 Defense is exactly right. You have got to have depth in the SEC if you are one of the best and making the # 2 Offense and # 2 Defense practice against better players, it will help them the most to get better . Also, stats don’t mean very much in practice. The coaches can control who gets the best stats. They are trying to get at least 2 depth at every position and not fall off as far as talent.
One thing I would like to add is they will have fewer injuries when the # 1 Defense and the # 1 Offense doesn’t go after each other. The Juniors and seniors on the 1ST team can tell the # 2 by telling them why they didn’t beat them on the play or out block them while the scrimmage is being played.
The matter concerning Mason was answered by Richt today. He said that Murray would start and if he got injured in the first part of the season that Mason would have to play because he is better than LeMay is right now but he hopes that Murray will not get hurt and LeMay can come in for mop up duty. Then later on if Murray gets hurt and LeMay has progressed enough that he is as good or better than Mason then LeMay will start and Mason will Red shirt.

I don’t get this rivalry thing with our QBs. Murray is clearly number 1, picked by many to be one of the top QBs in the country. Yea I remember him; I remember how this coaching staff when he was a freshman blew his redshirt by putting him on the field for one play and then made the statement that they didnt realize he was put on the field
and he has done good job while he has been allowed to play but just another player not utilized here

Folks asking about Jay Rome, he was out there, just didn’t catch any passes I guess. . . . As for fights or any other good stuff like that, it was a closed scrimmage so we have only the team’s reported statistics to go on.

Nobody officially starts both ways. Not sure why the #1 units do not face each other. It’s summer camp and that is what it is all about. Working your tail off and earning and or retaining a starting spot. We seem to entitle spots and play scared out of fear of injuries, then always start the season slow.

I read a interesting article today in regards to coach Mike Bobo. It seems he spent the off season visiting with Jim Harbaugh, in San Fransisco, talking Philosophy. Jim Harbaugh did a tremendous job at Stanford with offensive run blocking schemes, of the physical smash-mouth type, before UGA turned into a finesse type offense, UGA was also know for running the ball.
Harbaugh is also famous for using one back two Tight End sets of power running formations… with Arthur Lynch at 6′5″ 260 lbs and Jay Rome at 6′6″ 257 lbs UGA should be able to run the ball while protecting their young OT’s
This offense is about to happen…. smash-mouth is coming back!

I sense disaster building for the G. I went back and read articles ffrom 2011, about how the signing of IC was the biggest day in UGA football since 1980. And now he is gone, the super talented back, and we are supposed to believe everything is ok? I don’t believe it. Jarvis Jones will be regretting his decision to stay and will cost him big $, most likely. I see disaster for Dawgs, as anything but undefeated will be a let down. 3 to 5 regular season losses (SC, AU both road games, and FL) maybe others.

1) Murray.
2) Bobo.
Anybody who thinks the early suspensions will hurt our chances hasn’t looked at the depleted offensive lines our experienced defensive 7 will be facing in the first quarter of the season. Missouri just lost two more linemen to injuries and SC only has two returners on their line.

Tell me again, who’s the expert? Are you an NFL evaluator? Aaron does have most of the tools, except height, but he has to cut down on the interceptions. In 14 games last season he had at least one pick in 10 of those games, as opposed to 2010 when he only had 5 games where he threw an interception. Additionally he has to better his record against ranked competition. Cold facts.

Special teams is going to really be a problem. I just don’t understand why CMR doesn’t focus on it more. It cost us atleast 2 games last year and almost the Vandy game. CMR could go undefeated but we have a freshman pc and punter and 67 scholarship players so many walk-ons will be on punt and receiver team. We also don’t have a ST coach so mistakes like punting to Honey Badger twice will still happen.

6 of the punts during the LSU game were executed to perfection. The 2 that were not, its widely known that those were just plain too low, and the coverage paid for it. Everybody can see that, its been discussed. Its been explained. That’s how it went down. It happens, especiallly standing in the back of your own end zone, but it was an error in execution, not strategy. And no ST only coach would have called it any differently.
Nor would a ST coach just pull some more regular players out of his hip pocket, which is what you have said is the issue…..personel. So how does that change?
And as everybody keeps asking, who do you want to fire to open that spot?

It’s not like there is some secret strategies that ONLY a coach named “special teams” knows about. I’d guess pretty much every person who coaches for a living already knows all of that. Decades of football have pretty much settled the debate on best way to punt and cover it.
The only way that a ST coach can add value to the equation, is that if his focused attention makes sure that the players are working harder, and longer. But given the time restraints I wonder how much HE can really change that. AS a staff they can decided to apply more of thier alloted time to ST. Which I understand we have already done.
The other part of equation (which applies most to us, IMO, and as you keep saying, you agree with) is who is on the field. A ST teams coach I would think has very limited input on recruiting. He is trying to field his squad out of regular players. So given our current situation, I do not see how he is going to be working with anybody more than what we have. I understand they have decided to take a risk and use more of them.
To me, a big part of having one guy is that it frees up the other coaches NOT to worry about it.They don;t shere the burden or the blame/praise. I would guess that is actually why some coaches believe in it. To free up his other position coaches,. not because they think he knows something they don’t. For all but one year of his tenue, Richt HAS had somebody co-ordinating that, but shared coaching responsibility. SO that sort of a hybrid, which I think its the most common set-up around the country.
Richt has said, when ask, given THIS current staff, he preferes they all share BOTH the responsibility AND the task. Appearantly he wanted Olividatto, more than he wanted a LB coach who could co-ordinate special teams. I would bet that could change on the next flip of a staff member.
But to insist that if we only hired this One guy, for a opening we don’t have, all of the ST problem would some how majically disapear without fixing the actual real issues, just doesnt hold up IMO.

I wouldn’t read too much into Lemay going 50% in the scrimmage against the No 1 defense.
Murray went 40% on G-Day against the No 1’s, so Lemay did better going 50% than Murray’s 40%.
Thought Mason and Lemay looked very sharp on G-Day, both threw for around 60-70% accurate, Murray, well, he was down around 40%.
Murray completed 70% yesterday, AGAINST THE NO 2 DEFENSE. I sure wouldn’t read anything into that, as Murray rarely completes 70% against a No 1 defense on any team.
