Concussion sidelines Ray Drew from UGA practice (updated w/ practice notes)

(Updated 3:50 p.m.)

ATHENS – Georgia’s football team held its first full-pads practice of preseason camp today, minus a half-dozen injured or ill players.

Among the injured: defensive ends Abry Jones, out with a left knee contusion, and Ray Drew, sidelined by a concussion.

Georgia disclosed the injuries as part of a new policy of providing reporters covering practice a daily, written “injury-illness report” from director of sports medicine Ron Courson.  Today’s report provided no indication how long Jones and Drew will be sidelined from practice, nor any further detail on their injuries.

Coach Mark Richt, who in the past has tended to answer reporters’ questions about injuries after practices, sometimes with incomplete information, said the new policy was decided upon in the off-season.

“It wasn’t my idea, it wasn’t my brainstorm, but I’m part of the team,” Richt said. “I think it’s just to give you guys exactly what we want to give you [regarding injuries], and if you ask me a question about it, I’ll say, ‘Just read the report.’ And that’ll kind of be the way we go. But if you want to ask me about how does that affect the depth chart or something like that, [fine].

“I think, in football, injury reports are important; people want to know about what’s going on. But then you’ve got family members that we want to consider when we throw stuff out there.”

Also missing today’s practice: offensive lineman Chris Burnette (illness), safety Marc Deas (right hamstring strain), walk-on tight end Hugh Williams (third metacarpal fracture on left hand) and walk-on receiver Curtis Wyatt (illness).

According to the injury-illness report: Burnette is probable to return to practice Tuesday; Deas’ status is day-to-day; Williams will miss 10 to 14 days of practice after having out-patient surgery today at St. Mary’s Hospital; and Wyatt is probable to return to practice  Wednesday.

Richt acknowledged that Drew, a sophomore who moved from linebacker to defensive end in the spring, is missing needed practice time.

“He needs reps, no doubt,” Richt said. “Even the veterans, they need a certain amount of reps to get to where they’re sharp.”

On the Bulldogs’ latest depth chart, Jones and Cornelius Washington are the starting defensive ends and Drew a second-teamer.  To have two players, Jones and Drew, miss practice time at the same position compounds the effect, Richt said.

“Once a guy or two starts to miss practice, it usually takes a little bit more of a toll on that position group,” Richt said. “We’ve got some good quality depth, but it’s not like it’s unlimited in that area. As a matter of fact, in the 105[-player preseason roster],  there’s a lot more offensive players than defensive players. Our scholarships guys are about equal, but the majority of the walk-ons are offense.”

Etc.

Georgia will practice twice Tuesday. Two-a-day practices have become increasingly rare in college football; the Bulldogs have just one other two-practice day scheduled this preseason. . . . Tuesday’s first practice will focus on the kicking game. So far, Richt said, he has seen what he expected from freshman placekicker Marshall Morgan and freshman punter Collin Barber. . . . Freshman tailback Todd Gurley “is picking things up really fast,” according to senior wide receiver Tavarres King. . . . Richt told Richard Samuel “we need you to be ready” to play either tailback or fullback. “I told him continuing to get reps at tailback wouldn’t keep him from being a starting fullback,” Richt said. . . . The player making “the most direct hits” in Monday’s practice, Richt said, was linebacker Alec Ogletree. . . . Quarterback Aaron Murray said the offensive line “has looked great the first five days” and “definitely has picked up where [it] left off this spring.”

If these guys survive this month of practice they will be able to stay with anyone . They are pushing each other around pretty good for the 3RD practice. I think the Strength and Conditioning is going to pay off. I hope we don’t get a lot of injuries like in 2008.

Richt raved about his punter and kicker today after practice.

Great hang time, even when he didn’t get his best punt off. Still plenty of time to get the gunners down there.

Very accurate, very strong leg. Not much effort required to get the medium range FG’s.

Though I would be in favor of playing a decent team to start the season instead of Buffalo, players getting banged up in fall camp is an example of why coaches schedule creampuffs. You think with inexperienced players at each position replacing them things will be any better? As long as walk ons are covering punts and kicks and no special teams coach is hired the results will be similar. Hopefully he won’t punt to the Honey Badger if UGA makes it back to the SECCG.

Freshman missile: Speaking of running backs, Richt said freshman fullback Quayvon Hicks might be playing with a bit too much enthusiasm thus far. He compared Hicks’ desire to blast an opponent to that of former Bulldogs big-hitting safety Greg Blue, but said Hicks needs to play with a bit more control.

“He’s like a missile wanting to strike, but if the target moves enough, he’s going to miss it or he’s going to get a piece of him,” Richt said. “So he’s got to learn to get his eyes up a little bit better and be in a position to make sure that he gets a good fit and then follow through rather than just trying to knock somebody out every time.”

What is up with Drew? Scooter wreck last year basically ruined his season, now a flukey concussion? As big a waste of a scholarship as the 20 (?) walk-ons so far.

Richt should thumb his nose at the rest of the SEC and only make ‘Tree and Rambo sit for the first game, ONLY. They wouldn’t even get that with the rest of the NCAA teams.

When the other SEC programs start suspending their All-Americans, fine, do it here. Otherwise, tic-for-tac . . .

Who knows DIL? Richt thinks it’s as simple as “spending a little more time” on STs? Damn! So he never spent more time on them last season? All seaon? Our KO and punt teams were as bad at the end of the season as they were in the very first game.

I say fight fire with fire. Richt should hire some analysts (Nick Saban style) for the special teams.

If Richt doesn’t plug these holes, UGA cannot compete with Bama an LSU. Special teams gave the SECCG to LSU last year.

2) Florida will lose at least 7 games this year. You heard it here first. Worst set of quarterbacks in the conferrence. (Well maybe Auburn would give them a run.)

Poopdawg,
Mike Gillislee is going to be our starting TB. Read today where true freshman Matt Jones is doing really well so far in camp and will push for playing time. Both are MUCH bigger than what we had last year in Demps and Rainey, so they should be able to run between the tackles. We couldn’t do that at all last year. Obviously, neither has the pure breakaway speed that Demps and Rainey possessed.
My pick for the west is LSU. I think Bama has too many players to replace from last year’s squad but I wouldn’t be willing to bet against them. Saban has been stockpiling talent…inexperienced or not.
UGA is my pick for the East but, of course, I’ll be pulling for the Gators to win it.

Since Nicks only 3-2 vs Richt all time , I am sure when he brought in his defending National championship team from LSU to Athens in 2004 and got beat 45-16 he left wishing he would’ve analyzed how to stop a deep pass. Perhaps in 2010 he should’ve anlyzed what Richt did wrong in 2008. Since Bama entered the season ranked # 1 and went 10-3 just like Georgia did in 2008. Or in 2007 when Georgia beat Bama in overtime in Tuscaloosa . It seems like Richts has won 2 out of last 3 vs Nick. Sabans a great coach, dissing Georgia and Richt only makes you look small.

Brent Pease….who coached perhaps the best college QB in the country…..completely disagrees with your analysis of Jeff Driskell and Jacoby Brissett….and he knows a little more about football than you. Yes, they were thrown into a very difficult situation last year and were not prepared to play well as freshmen. Well….they aren’t freshmen any more and the talent that had them so highly rated by every recruiting is still there….which would be both over 6′3 and both over 220 lbs and both with NFL type throwing arms…and both very athletic and mobile. They will understand the entire offense this year….will have experience….and will make you eat your words (I copied them to my running Dawg fan predictions) by the end of the year…..and most likely the last weekend in October.

You predicting 7 losses by the Gators….well…just laughable. The team won 7 games last year with no QB and no offense. Reminder….you great Georgia team played that bad Florida team (offense only) and managing to overwhelm the Gators by 4 points. We will see if those 4 points hold up this year.

Florida will lose to South Carolina, LSU, and Tennessee. Tennessee will lose to Georgia, Bama, and will be upset by one other team. Vandy will lose 4 or 5. Kentucky will be winless in the East. Georgia again benefits from playing the least challenging SEC schedule and wins the East…..making Spurrier even madder….but will lose again by more than 15 to LSU in Atlanta. But will beat a Big Ten team in a bowl game.

The best defense in the country is in Baton Rouge, LA….LSU. Sorry.

And Florida actually has 5 QBs on their roster……two previously being two of the highest rated QB recruits in the country….and they are now being coached up by Brent Pease….who coached up a lesser rated QB at Boise State….you might remember him and Brent Pease’s offense from last year. Get ready for it in late October….and those no QBs at Florida. Also….you are going to be really surprised how good Mike Gillislee is going to be this year….if he stays healthy. But Florida does lack quality and experienced depth behind him.

Your’e right Tampa Gator. Saying Florida will lose 7 games is a joke and the worse case scenario. If quarterback and running back play is consistently good and 1 or 2 WR’s step up the Gators could win the the east. I know that’s a lot of questions but a good offensive line should help solve alot of those problems. I’ll give the Gators 8-10 wins this year depending on how long it takes the offense to find its rhythym. Also good news on Tunsil, I’m hoping he decides to sign with UGA. He is much needed.

Bhahahahahha…Reality disagrees with this is absurd statement.

That “great” defense just came off giving up 38 pts a game the last two times it went on the field and only in disney dawg land does that get you an contract extension and a raise. Stacked deep, huh? Care to explain the repeated 2nd hafl collapses with all those stacked deep players?

“best D in all NCAA”
Bhahhaha…hades UGA is the 3rd best Defense in its division behind SC\UF and that puts it in 5th place in the SEC behind BAMA\LSU from the West.

SEC Defenses:
LSU
BAMA
SC
UF
MSU
ARK
AUB
UT…who cares after this…

Reality is that UGA has been good for about a half of decent defense but collapses against better teams because of their lack of depth and Grantham’s inability to make halftime adjustments.

I really liked that add on…….”on offense.” Great start to the Gator practices. Look forward to getting some news once they put on the pads and start knocking each other around.

By the way……Dante Fowler is up to 277 lbs and has not lost a step according to Muschamp. He could make a big impact on DE….this year. I wonder how Jonathan Bullard is coming along since he missed all of the summer workouts with the team. Georgia gave up 45 points to South Carolina but the Defense only cause like 19 of those points. The rest of the points were cause by Murray turnovers and special teams doing a very bad job. Our defense was ranked 5TH in the nation last year , that is a great defense and I can tell you they are better this year. But, our special teams was one of the worst in the nation and Murray’s turnover were very high. Our lack of depth did kill us in the LSU game in the second half because the offense had so many 3 and out’s. Grantham did his job better than any of the coaches , including CMR but football is a team sport and everybody suffers when only one key coach doesn’t do their job. Our 4 losses were because of one of the worst field goal kickers in in Division 1 last year and because of Bobo’s offense not holding up their part of the job. Specifically, Murray’s panic turnovers and no consistent running game.

Richt and Booboo fail once again to recruit offensive linemen necessary to compete vs. SEC calibre defenses. They going to start a 6′1″ 280 lb. center from a private school who acknowledges being out weighed in some cases by 90 freakin’ lbs! , And Richt/Booboo, rather than acknowledging the utter insanity of playing the kid, put their typical “SPIN” on it. “This guy’s intelligent and has really(and this is their favorite) “picked up the system”. We can’t move 6′3″ 330lb. Chris Burnette to Center (and in doing so, pick up 50lbs, 3 years more experience, and a ton more athleticism), because 6′4″ 330lb OG Mark Beard, “can’t pick up the system.” Ques. to all DAWG fans: When are you going to start questioning the sanity of this guy Richt?

Wow! I am making almost zero progress here, despite trying to teach the basics of logical reasoning. Give me just one quality post to encourage me to keep working with you- instead I am getting the same old drivel. Well, I am not giving up yet. Today’s lesson is how to come across as a real Bama fan.

1. When Bama misses out on a Cam Newton or Anthony Jennings, you are supposed to be upset (or at least fake it).
2. When Georgia misses out on Anthony Jennings or any of these numerous lineman, you are supposed to be happy- remember you are NOT pulling for the Dogs, but for Bama.
3. Georgia’s relatively low scholarship numbers are not Bama’s problem, so don’t act so upset about it- remember you are NOT a UGA fan.
4. From your posts, you are more upset about the Dogs’ OL than any UGA fan that posts here. Remember you are trying to come across as a Bama fan, so don’t act so concerned about whatever problems you think Georgia has. Its not your problem.
5. It is not good for your case of being a Bama fan to continually be putting down guys like Barrett Jones because of where he went to high school or his skin color. That will turn off true Bama fans real quick.

One final piece of friendly advice from your tutor, you keep making illogical rants on here, and the brick bats will continue to fly your way, and you will deserve them. Do NOT keep bringing a knife to a gun fight and expect any other results than the beatdowns you regularly recieve on here from fans of many schools.

Brain — I’m simply looking out for the best interests of the young man.
A concussion is a touch more serious than a hang-nail or a bloody nose.
I wanna make sure this kid is being looked after properly.
The Conference doesn’t need any more bad press coming outta Athens.

@ Big Crimson:

And you and Pan-cho are afraid CMR or the team doctor will run Drew out there in a wheel chair to help shore up the defense??? Have you ever known such to happen under CMR???

There is absolutely no basis for your line of thought. You will recall that CMR let IC go and come in and out of the games at his choosing!!!!!

Seriouly, thanks for your concern!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many job offers has Todd Grantham had? Schools must be clamoring over a guy who’s defense didn’t give up a single point last year (it was all the offensive’s fault)

If Todd Grantham coached at Alabama (a real program) he would have been fired this off season for the embarassing performances to ranked teams…and Vanderbilt

Thank goodness that the conference has you looking out for it. I mean Ron Courson barely knows this stuff…….haven been head of Alabama’s athletic medical staff before coming over to Georgia. President of both the Alabama medical trainer association , and the national associations. Trainers hall of fame. head trainer for the olympic team, and head of the SEC medical committee.

I came on while eating lunch to maybe read about Georgia football and have to read the post of absolutely the three stupidest idiots ever. Roll Tide, Pan-cho, plus some moron Phil that knows nothing about football.

@ The tide is rolling and

Grantham had a job in the NFL as long as he wanted !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now tell us about the 8th Dwarf’s(aka Sabie) tenure in the NFL!!!!!!!!!!

He never got all his sh_ _ unpacked and his family was still living in Louisisana when Miami fans and management sent U-Haul Trucks in the night to get rid of the embarrassing 8th Dwarf. How in hell can one of the BIGGEST failures as NFL HC fire somebody who lived in the NFL???

Even Spurrier lasted longer than the 8th Dwarf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LMAO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The spelling of Atlanta looks alot like Alabama to the moron bamers. They think they are on the Alabama Journal & Constitution. They just aren’t that bright…

Why don’t we hear of these type injuries from other schools, is it that the media is just not covering?

@ King Daddy:

I don’t have a problem what-so-ever with Bammies as a whole. I much prefer them over A-Holes like Tide Roll, Thomas Brown, Game Changer and ANY noise what so ever from a USCe Game Chikun raving about how they are suddenly on par with Bammy and LSU because they actually won a game of significance in their PATHETIC Football History. Every team in the SEC has won an SEC Championship …………………………………EXCEPT(Drum roll please)……………………….Chikun U!!!!!!!!!!!!

OOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There went Chikun U’s backup QB !!!!!!!!!!!

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Fletcher:

You don’t get out very much do you??? EVERY team including HS has injuries every year. Concussions are common although no one has bothetred to post the “How did it happen???” answer!!!!!!

Could have been another episode of “How to operate a Scooter 101″ @ UGA!!!!!!!!!!!

@ King Daddy:

How could a DGD of your caliber be too busy to harrass the competition??

It’s less than a month until the first Kickoff so you need to be at your PRIME just in case UGA actually defeats a team that has played a team that had a ST coach whose father knew a couple of guys he met during the first Gulf War that had grandsons playing(Not starters of course) for a team that lost by one point on a Tuesday after a full moon at 10:00 am to a team that finally finished in the Top 10 but was on probation so that close win never made it into the record books since they were forced to forfiet ALL their games played on any day not named Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Please put this info in a safe place since MORONS R US will be without anything to post about once the aforementioned events occur and are documented!!!!
