ATHENS — Georgia senior cornerback Branden Smith, who was facing suspension because of a marijuana arrest in back in March, was cleared by the school to play in the Bulldogs’ season opener.
Coach Mark Richt made the announcement shortly after Georgia completed its third practice of preseason football camp on Saturday in Athens.
“Branden Smith will play Game One,” Richt said. “After [reviewing] all the information that we’ve gathered, we’ve decided that he’ll be available to play in the first game and he’ll be available to talk about any details. After determining what happened, we’ve got peace that we’re doing the right thing.”
Smith was expected to miss at least one game as per the UGA athletic association’s conduct code, which calls for an automatic suspension for 10 percent of competition dates for violators of the marijuana-use policy. But central to Georgia’s decision to waive that penalty was the fact that Smith said passed two separate drug tests shortly after he was arrested in a traffic stop on March 14 in south Alabama.
“I came back right away to get tested [by UGA],” Smith said Saturday. “I was clean. I went to court, got tested, I was clean. I don’t do drugs. Now I’m just moving on from this incident. I’d like to apologize for the university and my family as far as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Smith was placed in the Henry County (Ala.) court’s pretrial intervention program and since completed the requirements to have the marijuana charges expunged from his record.
Smith’s reinstatement is the first bit of good news in an offseason that has been rife with bad news for the Bulldogs. Two defensive starters are expected to miss the first two games each due to arrests in cornerback Sanders Commings (domestic battery) and outside linebacker Chase Vasser (DUI). Meanwhile, Georgia has yet to confirm or deny multiple media reports that free safety Bacarri Rambo and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree face multiple-games suspensions for second-offenses of the athletic association’s marijuana-use policy.
“There were some off-field situations that came up that’s going to keep some of our guys out for the first few games or so,” sophomore defensive end Ray Drew said. “But there is strength in numbers and just having [Smith] back boosts us just little bit more knowing that we have our brother playing beside us and helping us go out and get the job done.”
With Smith back in the fold, it appears that he and converted wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell will be the starting cornerbacks for the Bulldogs’ first two games. They open the season against Buffalo at Sanford Stadium on Sept. 1, then face pass-happy Missouri on the road the following week.
“I most definitely think I can help the secondary,” said Smith, who has started 17 games and played in 36 for the Bulldogs. “We have our whole defense coming back. We were out there today practicing hard, strong, fast. Everybody’s having fun out there. We’re just ready for the season to start. We’re out there as a group and we’re going with it.”
ATHENS – In an offseason that seems like it has been filled with bad news, Georgia finally offered some good for its fans on Saturday.
Coach Mark Richt revealed after Saturday’s practice that starting cornerback Branden Smith will be available to play Bulldogs’ season-opening game against Buffalo. Smith was facing a suspension after his arrest in Alabama in March on misdemeanor marijuana possession charges. He was granted pretrial intervention status in court and has since completed the conditions to have those charges dismissed.
“After just gathering all the information, determining what happened, we’ve got peace that we’re doing the right thing on Branden,” Richt said.
Smith told reporters after Saturday’s practice that he immediately returned to Athens after his arrest during a traffic stop in Headland, Ala., and passed a drug test. He said he also passed a court-ordered drug test and that’s why the Bulldogs cleared him to play.
“I don’t do drugs,” Smith insisted. “So right now I’ve just moved on. Like I said, I apologize to the university and my family for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
It was generally thought that Smith would miss Georgia’s first game as per the athletic association’s conduct code regarding marijuana offenses. That policy stipulates a 10 percent suspension for competition dates for violations.
Smith’s return relieves some of the stress on Georgia’s secondary, which already knows it will be without follow starting cornerback Sanders Commings and possibly others. Commings is suspended for the first two games of the season after pleading guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charges in February. Starting outside linebacker Chase Vasser is also out the first two games because of a May arrest for DUI and free safety Bacarri Rambo and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree reportedly are facing suspensions for marijuana policy violations.

Great news! With Smith back and Mitchell’s seemingly easy move to the secondary, we may not be in terrible shape for Missouri. I’d like to know soon how long Ogletree will miss, though I believe we’ve got plenty of depth at linebacker, unlike safety. We still don’t have anyone with great size to cover their 6′6 freshman, but we’ll see how that goes.

They need to bring in former All-American and 1st round pick Bernard Williams to talk to these clowns about throwing away a NFL career and possible hall of fame induction because of something as silly as marijuana. For those that don’t know, after 15 failed drug tests (that he can remember) he was banned from the league after starting all games his rookie year at left tackle. He didn’t sniff a pro football field against for 6 years when he showed up in the XFL. After that, he played several more years in the CFL, but never became the superstar (or multi-millionaire) he was destined to become.

It is about time that UGA finally got the message that you cannot keep suspending our players and have a nationally competitive football team. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t support the drug and alcohol abusers on our football team but we cannot win without them. Maybe they could be punished during the non football season.
You can either have a team full of good boys that cannot play at the level it takes to win a national championship or you can have a team with a few straight arrows and a whole lot of top level athletes. It looks like UGA is moving toward the latter.

If Rambo test has been clean since the spring break brownie thing I don’t think he should get more than one game off and I think with Ogletree this was his first offense with pot , the other incident didn’t have anything to do with alcohol or drugs so he doesn’t deserve more than one game off either.
I think there is finally a different mind set in Athens and punishing these kids too much wouldn’t help any. I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt that they will not repeat any drug use. If Rambo or Ogletree have to miss four game I think that is excess for what they did. You know that Mark Richt hasn’t just let these two sit around without punishment.
I say time served and one game suspension. This will probably be the last year for both players so too much punishment will only hurt the team . The best punishment for someone that won’t be back next year, and that could be as early as January 2013 , is to restrict their extra curricula activity , community service , running steps at 6:00 a.m.

So, school policy is a definite one game suspension, but St. Mark of Athens thumbs his nose at school policy and decides he needs Smith to beat Buffalo. This “coach” has fallen very, very far as a disciplinarian. This was a cut-and-dried punishment, and the guy decides he doesn’t have to abide by rules he helped set up. Nice.

Hey WI, read the highlighted article in the story. Never mind, here is the relevent part:
“UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity, who was also attending the news conference, said marijuana arrests of UGA student-athletes carry a mandatory suspension of 10 percent of competition dates. In football that usually means one game, though it is left up to the head coach’s discretion, McGarity said.”
Seems pretty clear that he should be suspended, but that “head coach’s discretion” means unless we need the player to beat a really crappy MAC team.

The A.D. you should change your initials to D.A.(Bumb Ass) The kid was tested for pot after his arrest, and he has been tested by the courts. He doesn’t smoke pot, and he had none in his system. Just so you understand, pot stays in your systems for up to 30 days, so the kid is innocent. Don’t know what outlaw school you are a fan of, S.C, Auburn, Bama, Tn, or Florida, but the kid would have never missed a game if he was guilty and played on these teams. He would actually have to tested positive 3 or more times for most of these schools, that simply look the other way when it comes to pot. Since Richt and UGA are so soft on kids and discipline, Crowell would still be starting for Auburn, Bama, S.C, Florida or Tn. These schools and their phony ass coaches would have done nothing to Crowell. Hell if he were at S.C. under S.O.S. he would have to be guilty at least 3 or 4 times to miss a snap(Garcia’s discipline by S.C. was a total joke) So go spew somewhere else, because you have no clue how strict Richt & UGA are when it comes to discipline. Actually, other than Vandy, UGA is the only school in the SEC that knows what the word means.

Here is what I think: All UGA fans should flood the NCAA about placing a drug testing policy that is standard for all schools. We have one of the toughest policies in Division I — but yet we get laughed at by schools like Florida, Auburn, etc. who do not test their players. It’s time to make it an even playing field. The NCAA are such hyprocrites — they want to make the playing field level but yet they don’t have a drug testing policy. Give me a break.

For all of you bashers out there, the court dismissed the charge. Why? Because he passed a court administered drug test immediately after the arrest. Technically, ANYTHING found in your car is yours, whether its really yours or a passengers, thus the arrest. However, it became obvious the pot wasn’t Smith’s. Of course the correct answer would have been, No, you do not have permission to search my car. Either arrest me, or let me go!

If you are not a fan of the Dawgs, why do you really care if Branden Smith misses the Buffalo game or not? We could recruit four 90 lb. sousaphonists from the Redcoat band and still beat Buffalo. Smith was never going to miss a game against your school, so why do you care so much? Is it because you know your team won’t beat mine? Ah, your tears are so yummy and sweet! @GTBob Still doesn’t explain why you care? Richt is not your coach, so why does his discipline policies matter to you so much? Let me get this straight. Richt is known to be one of the strictest disciplinarians in CFB, and the one time he uses discretion in the handing out of punishment (and rightfully so to any clear-thinking individual), he gets burned in effigy on the AJC boards by fans of schools he has nothing to do with? Still don’t understand why you so obsessed with what Richt does or doesn’t do, but you don’t know what the outcome was of your own player who fought with cops in Athens a couple of months ago. And for that matter, do you actually truly disagree with Richt’s decision (charges dropped/multiple drug tests passed), or do you just need something to bitch about?

If Smith were a gator, he wouldn’t even be running stadium stairs for this. I would assume if your scenario played out as you stated, he would be suspended, however your scenario is a flawed example. A better one would be: If Smith were in Richt’s office with three other people, and a joint fell out of one of the other people’s pocket, would Mark Richt be fired since the weed was in his office? yes, Bobby Ross, shortly after winning a National Championship was actually fired by GT but we sent him to the NFL to make it look better. Nice logic there. Bill Lewis got fired before the UGA game in 1994. Kinda hard to say UGA caused that. Chan Gailey got fired because he had no idea how to win more then 7 games. If he could have won 8-10 games more than once then he would have kept his job. Beating UGA has very little to do with any coaching decisions at GT. We know we are going to lose to UGA.

GT acts as if they are holier than thou. A quick story: A few years ago, O’Leary took GT up to the mountains for summer camp at North Georgia College. They practiced on the drill field, which is huge and holds 5-6 football fields. He bragged about how quiet it was up there with no distractions and nothing for the players to do but practice and go to school. He said everyone was very hospitable and he wanted to make the trip an annual thing. However, a few GT players took some classes there. NGC has a program of study that transfers to GT by mutual consent. And some players needed to pick up some credits. Guess what? Almost to a man, the GT players FAILED their courses at NGC. GT never came back. Never heard another word from O’Leary about NGC.

just watch the mens beach volleyball team beat the russians to advance to the quarters. These vball matches have been so much fun to watch both men and women. I watched the match two days ago i think, that was usa girls (team b) against some country and it was very intense. The third set just kept going and going. I was standing yelling and jumping up and down. Felt like i was watching a college football game. I think beach volleyball if promoted and marketed correctly could be a sport on the rise cause it is very exciting to watch and it is a sport anyone can go out and play. i love playing it when i am on the beach even though i am built like a fullback i love the sport and always surprise them with my vertical even though it is declining as i am aging. they dont expect a 245 pound white boy to sky like i do and i am still dunking too anyway i love that beach volleyball and they said it is the most requested ticket for this and the past olympics and every match has been sold old. Those players said that they love playing in front of 15000 bc they usually dont get but a fourth of that. I hope the sport grows bc it has potentional and those girls look great. They are usually very pretty and athletic but they still are feminine acting unlike some of the other female sports where you wonder is that a man or woman. To me female basketball players are extremely manly looking and acting. I think it is bc of their baggy uniforms but you dont see many sexy femal bball players.

Charges expunged and charges “dismissed” have two different meaning, Lake Dawg. He will no longer have an arrest record….but he was NOT found innocent of the charges either. If he had been found innocent, the charges would have been dismissed. Instead of going to trial to prove his innocence, he completed a pretrail program available to him as a minor and as a first time offender…and avoid a trial. I know Janoris Jenkins did the same thing when he was first arrested for the same offense….and he was suspended for one game…and it was an important game at that.
It looks like UGA is moving toward the latter.”
This is a comment from somebody. Like my GOD, this guy is the epitome of a stupid, typical Georgia Bulldog fan. Hee-larious. Just admit that in the original article on the story, Smith was supposed to be suspended for just being arrested with the grass, for putting himself in a bad situation. Not did he pass a pee test. Not did he pass a second pee test. Not did the grass belong to someone else.
The entire team was told to stay out of trouble; Smith went to spring break with a guy who had been arrested for drugs A WEEK EARLIER; was pulled over; pot was found in the car; ARREST WAS MADE (at this point the suspension was supposed to be automatic). Pot in car; arrest made; no suspension. All for Buffalo; not Missouri. That’s it. It’s not complicated. Stop making excuses.

No arrest this spring or summer under Muschamp…thank goodness. Janoris Jenkins….preseason All-SEC (and a ton better player than Brandon Smith) was kicked off the Florida team by Muschamp. So was Chris Martin. A.C. Leonard was asked politely to take his excellent TE skills elsewhere.
I like the “crap” coming from Muschamp and THE SWAMP concerning discipline of his players and what is expected when you represent the University of Florida. GTBob, maybe you should put more effort in keeping your school out of trouble. After all, Tech has become a habitual violator of NCAA rules. Two years probation in 2005 for using 17 academically ineligible athletes in four sports of which 11 of these players were football players – and you complain that Crowell “maybe should have been ineligible” to play against Florida? Give me a break! Tech paid a fine, vacated games, and lost scholarships. The NCAA investigating committee, said Tech’s registrars and academic advisers were inadequately trained in NCAA regulations. Then, last year, Tech was caught cheating again and was stripped of it’s ACC Championship, fined $100,000.00, 4 years probation, reduction of recruiting days, public reprimand, and censure. And you mouth off about UGA players? Problems with student/athletics pale in comparison to Tech’s multiple violations, especially when the guilty are the Ga. Tech leaders – Athletic Directors (Dave Braine & Dan Radakovich), head coaches, academic advisers, etc. You should be ashamed.

I’m a Georgia fan and love Georgia Football but not at any price. I don’t think the AD said you had to be caught smoking pot, but charged with a Marijuana infraction, and that’s exactly what happened. I assume the pot just appeared under the car seat out of the blue. He should be suspended for one game and then move on. As for Rambo and Ogletree–If it was their second infraction I would suspend them for at least 4 games and if caught again they would be off the team

For clarification: Those of you claiming he should be suspended for a game still (under the mandatory one game suspension for marijuana related arrests), please stop and think about what that means. Legally, once your charges are dismissed, there was no arrest. Just as in the court of law, once you’re found “not guilty”, it’s as if it never happened. There is no place, in our judicial system or in an athletic program, to punish those who are never found guilty of rule-breaking.

But Janoris Jenkins did play at S.Bama and is going to be one of the starting cornerbacks for the St. Louis Rams this year……already showing his cover and athletic skills in a big way at the Rams camp….

First off THC which is the active ingredient in marijuana remains in a persons system for up to 30 days so if he had been smoking marijuana it would have shown up in his golden flow. Also if they tested his hair then it take a lot longer to clear from your system. Next I expect that Branden learned a lesson that all people should learn, be careful who you associate with.
AD you are an idiot plain and simple- first he was tested for USE and his tests showed he was not using marijuana, also since you seem to think people can not be unjustly arrested and should be further punished for being at the wrong place and wrong time that shows just how ignorant and hateful you are. I pray something similar never happens to you or anyone in your family.

Tampa Gator-
First off you are comparing apples to oranges- the two cases are not similar and you know it Jenkins was using marijuana while Smith was being stupid for hanging around people who do smoke pot. Next this is still America where you are SUPPOSED to be innocent until proven guilty and since he had not been using as the hair follicle test shows use of up to 6 months and the golden flow for 30 days in my humble opinion that would seem to suggest that Mr. Smith meets the latter of having bad judgement in who he associates with. Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson from this close call and does not end his career at Georgia the way Jenkins did at Florida. Yes I realize Mr. Jenkins stands to make a lot of money in the NFL that is if he did in fact learn his lesson which by the way I hope and pray he has. I would only suggest to stop the hating and wish this particular young man success.
Lake Dawg……
Charges expunged and charges “dismissed” have two different meaning, Lake Dawg. He will no longer have an arrest record….but he was NOT found innocent of the charges either. If he had been found innocent, the charges would have been dismissed. Instead of going to trial to prove his innocence, he completed a pretrail program available to him as a minor and as a first time offender…and avoid a trial. I know Janoris Jenkins did the same thing when he was first arrested for the same offense….and he was suspended for one game…and it was an important game at that. So…I guess I was not stirring the “pot” as you claimed I was. But….as I said in that post….I am wondering what message Richt sent with his actions….

Big Dawg, you lack reading comprehension. I never said he didn’t pee clean. I said he was the driver of a car in which a known dealer was a passenger and weed was found during a traffic stop. He was arrested. That right there was grounds for a suspension, no ifs, ands, or buts. UGa’s “tough” policy calls for suspensions IF ARRESTED.
No one at UGa ever said there was no weed in the car or that Smith was never arrested. The policy was very clear and Richt and McGarity ignored it. End of story.

Let me start with this tidbit of knowledge: you can get arrested for ANYTHING that is illegal, whether it’s murder, robbery, or littering. You can be arrested for speeding just 1 mph over the limit. Lawfully the officer can take you in. So when you interpret the 1-game suspension rule for arrests, you have to understand that it depends on the circumstances. Obviously, more often than not, arrests mean the player deserves suspensions, but you cannot lay down a blanket rule that if any police officer sees fit to take a player in, you must suspend him. Branden Smith was not found guilty. Why suspend him?

I wonder if you were to pick up the AJC and read an article “SIX ATLANTA PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS ARRESTED FOR POT”. I bet most of you would be making some very nasty racial comments. However, we know that all of the players who are in violation are African American and they have appeared to garner a great deal of simpathy and a plea for lenient punishment. As long as BLACK BOYS can run, catch, kick and throw a ball white folk always seem to give’em a PASS. If these were MEDICAL STUDENTS they would have more than likely been expelled immediately. immediately.
