Notebook: Georgia confirms Chase Vasser’s May DUI arrest

ATHENS — Georgia had more offseason troubles than we originally thought.

Vasser

Vasser

Chase Vasser, a junior outside linebacker from Gainesville, was arrested for driving under the influence back in May in Atlanta, Georgia officials confirmed on Thursday. The 21-year-old projected starter has been suspended for the first two games of the season as per UGA’s student-athlete conduct code, team spokesman Claude Felton confirmed late Thursday evening.

No other information was immediately available on Vasser’s arrest, which occurred May 11 in Buckhead. However, the Athens Banner-Herald reports that Vasser has a scheduled court appearance on Aug. 21 at the City of Atlanta Municipal Court.

The suspension of Vasser, who is 21, makes him at least the fourth defensive starter expected to miss playing time for the Bulldogs this season. Cornerback Sanders Commings is already suspended two games for a January arrest on domestic violence charges. Cornerback Branden Smith, safety Bacarri Rambo and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree are also facing suspensions for team rules violations but Georgia has not announced their punishments.

Meanwhile, four other Georgia players have been dismissed since the end of last season. Starting tailback Isaiah Crowell was arrested on June 29 on three weapons charges and kicked off the team that same day. Defensive backs Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders and wide receiver Sanford Seay were dismissed in early February for their involvement in the theft of a teammates’ dorm room.

Dogs ranked No. 6 by coaches

Despite all the offseason troubles, there continues to be high expectations for the Bulldogs this season. Georgia was ranked No. 6 by college coaches in the USA Today preseason poll released on Thursday.

“We’re not worried about it,” junior quarterback Aaron Murray said. “Last year we ignored the negativity and all the bad talk about Georgia and this year we’re going to ignore all the positive stuff. We’re just going to focus on what we need to do, and that’s work hard, show up to practice every day with the right attitude, get in the film room, get in the weight room and do a lot of little things to make sure we have a successful season.”

Sixth is the school’s highest preseason ranking since it opened the 2008 season ranked No. 1. The Bulldogs actually dropped to No. 3 without losing a game the first four weeks that year, then fell to 11th after losing to Alabama 41-30 in the infamous “blackout game.” They finished 10-3 after a win in the Capital One Bowl.

LSU and Alabama, who played in the national championship last season, were ranked 1 and 2, respectively second and Southern California third. Oklahoma and Oregon round out the top five.

Dawg talk

Thursday was preseason media day for the Bulldogs, so selected players were made available for interviews before practice. Here’s some of their comments:

Sophomore Malcolm Mitchell on playing both cornerback and wide receiver:

“At first it was just something I wanted to do to expand my game, but now it’s become a necessity. But it’s something I look forward to doing to help the team until we can regroup and get everybody back here. . . . It’s fun and I like doing them both. You just have to push yourself.”

Senior tailback Richard Samuel on third position change:

“I feel like switching between running back and linebacker slowed down my development because I didn’t have much time to get used to the linebacker position. Switching between fullback and running back hasn’t slowed my down too much because it’s basically the same plays and I just have to learn the little differences.”

All-America outside linebacker Jarvis Jones on expectations:

“We know what we’re capable of. We had a lot of hype last year, and we had a great run. This year, we know that people are expecting us to be way better. We’re just going to take it all in stride. We’re going to go out there everyday and make it our best, practice at our best, and then try to take it from there. Everything starts in practice so we’re just going to go through these days in camp and have fun doing it to try to get out everything we can before September 1.”

Senior strong safety Shawn Williams on playing for defensive coordinator Todd Grantham:

“One thing that I’ve picked up from him is to be accountable and to know your stuff. That proves how valuable you are in the system that we run. Having him here is like a blessing to us, and his mindset that he brings to the table helps us a lot.”

Freshman numbers

It’s always interesting to see what numbers first-year players will get as they embark on Georgia careers. Defensive back Sheldon  Dawson of Memphis snapped up the No. 2 previously worn by Brandon Boykin, wide receiver Blake Tibbs snatched the No. 8 once donned by A.J. Green and place-kicker Marshall Morgan got the lucky No. 13 that punter Drew Butler had the last four years.

Other jersey numbers claimed by incoming freshmen who weren’t midyear enrollees include: Punter Collin Barber (32), linebacker Josh Dawson (91), linebacker James DeLoach (89), tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith (80), tailback Todd Gurley (3), linebacker/safety Josh Harvey-Clemons (25), fullback Quayvon Hicks (48), linebacker Jordan Jenkins (59), offensive lineman Greg Pyke (73), defensive lineman John Taylor (94) and offensive lineman John Theus (71).

Scene and heard

The Bulldogs practiced for two hours in their first of 28 preseason workouts… . The first-string offensive line lined up this way: left tackle Kenarious Gates, left guard Dallas Lee, center David Andrews, right guard Chris Burnette and right tackle Watts Dantzler… . Highly-touted freshman Josh Harvey-Clemons was wearing the No. 25 and was working with the safeties.

This defense is developing some depth to it…. I believe in Coach Grantham, Olivadotti, Garner, Lakatos to get the #2’s ready to play!

Look on the positive… these five players will be fresh when we will need them most at USCe.

Believe in the “G”…. quit the violin playing…. will not do any good…. we have to GATA with what we got!

I think this is more telling of the sorry state of affairs that Coach St. Richt has brought to this undisciplined team when the supposed LEADER of the team – Arron Murray – states that “We’re not worried about it,” when referring to the players who have to miss the first couple of games because Saint Richt has NO discipline for his players.

Ramik Wilson can replace Vasser (faster) – Chris Robinson (experience) will fill in for Tree – Malcolm Mitchell will be a (star) in place of Commings – (Ditto) for Josh Harvey-Clemons for Rambo – Damian Swann will replace Smith. The only worry I see here could that some of these starters might need to worry about losing their #1 positions!

UGA nation is this glass half empty or half full? Believe in the “G”

Of course they are ranked 6th. It’s about that high shook schedule not about quality of team. Aol go 10-3 and not even win sec east. Usc spans em hard. If they do make secC they get drilled by either lay or al. Only way they make secC is if usc slips up.

I’m surprised none of the new players claimed the extra #1 jersey that is now going unused. After all, you can never have too many #1’s on the roster.

Ah yes! They might as well go ahead and carve U-G-A on the Fulmer cup again!!! Now we know why UGA always has such a pansy schedule at the start of the season — to compensate for all of the suspended players!!! Just messin’ with ya’ll though. I don’t really see where this is even a story. A college kid got a DUI?!?!?!?! Oh the horror of it all!!!!! Surely it can’t be!!!! I mean come on folks, How many of you made it through 4 (or 5 or 6, lol) years of college without ever getting into ANY alcohol-related trouble? …………(sound of crickets)……………… If you did — Shame on you! Because you wasted the best years of your life being a bump on a log!!!! Part of being a kid in college is going out and having fun with your new frinds, and that generally will involve alcohol (and likely other things too!!). People want to put these guys on some kind of pedestal , but you’ve got to remember THESE ARE KIDS, who are more often than not away from home for the first time in their lives. You shoule EXPECT them to get into mischief from time to time. It’s called being a human being. Deal with it folks, and quit bashing on some kid for doing what kids do.

It’s not that people are talking bad about UGA! It’s not normal for roughly 8 players to face suspension, or elimination because they got caught on multiple weapons charges, assault charges, or any other issue. Put a leash on your Dogs CMR or you’ll find yourself without a litter for the season.

Not a big deal with Vasser being sidelined. Ramik Wilson, TJ Strippling or Reuben F. will step in for Vasser for the first two (2) games. I would rather this happen now than mid-season and the replacement not get the first team snaps for fall practice. This basically just flipped the depth chart with Vasser going back to 2nd team and Wilson moving to first team. Good for Ramik Wilson! Keep your head in the game and you will get to play! Also, remember that Grantham could pull Cornelus Washington back into that spot and start Ray Drew at DE. Just saying……

Another thought….You could see #59 get to play Vasser’s OLB position opposite of Jarvis Jones. Jordan Jenkins was brought to UGA to play OLB and play early. Here is a chance for him to get two early starts!

TJ Stripling will be starting at this position so it really dont matter. But it’s so sad that when African American kids that’s doing the same thing as white kids get into trouble they are called out of there names. What will you call this guy, beside calling him a cutie. It’s 2012 and still the same old mess about race.

Actually, Vasser is very talented. Runs a 4.5 forty. He’s just been biding his time. The few times he played last year,he played well. One thing that has held him back is that he is a bit of a party animal. Looks like its bit him again.

I was thinking the same thing. Hate this for Vasser but, like the others, he has to suffer for his actions. Hope he learns his lesson and don’t put himself in the same situation again.

Does anybody keep records on this stuff. This has got to be a record number of suspensions and just pure players being kick off the team. Watch how this goes down. If the Dawgs lose to Spurrier or anybody early this will start to be published as a record number, if they win no one will care. I think Georgia’s third string talent could win games if they had coaching, but a lot of this disciple is the sloppiness of the coaches keeping up with the players. You pay these guys a lot of money and I am betting most of these coaches especially the defensive ones don’t see these guys much off the field. After the Vandy and Florida games I would not be surprise if the defensive coaches are immature enough to be out partying with the players.

These players are stupid! Georgia is already short to begin with. That game at Missouri is looking more like a lose. I think the big question here is what are Georgia’s policy or communication for letting players know what is right and wrong? it’s like they dont know!

My question is, WHY should the AJC make a story like this public? What good does it serve anybody to report about this kid in this matter. My feeling is that it does NOTHING positive, and should NEVER be reported in the sports section of the AJC! This kid made a mistake, and he will suffer the consequences of this mistake. He doesn’t need some hack reporter in a 2nd tier newspaper to crucify him… Pathetic!
