WR Tavarres King: Bulldogs in great shape, eager start preseason camp

ATHENS — For Tavarres King, the football season can’t get here fast enough. The last time we saw him in game action, he was running up and down the field at Raymond James Stadium to the tune of 205 receiving yards with an 80-yard touchdown. However, his personal highlights got lost in what ended up being a gut-wrenching loss to Michigan State in triple overtime.

“I’ve been extremely eager all off-season to get back out there to continue where I left off,” said King, a senior flanker for the Bulldogs. “It was an extremely high note personally, but not as a team. So we’ve been getting after it this summer. Guys have been participating in drills and workouts. We’ve had pretty much perfect attendance all summer. Everybody’s eager to get back on the field and tackle this thing.”

King and his teammates don’t have much longer to wait. Players report for preseason camp on Tuesday.

Of course, none of them really ever left. According to King, the Bulldogs had 100 percent participation during summer workouts from returning lettermen and incoming freshman. Seventeen of Georgia’s 19 signees enrolled in classes in June and have worked out with the team all summer. Two others — defensive lineman John Atkins of Thomson and defensive end Leonard Floyd of Eastman — were unable to attain freshman eligibility and will attend prep school.

But about 100 players — 75 on scholarship and another 25 walkons — have remained in Athens to attend classes and participate in the Bulldogs’ revamped offseason strength and conditioning program. Program director Joe Tereshinski added  added longtime Penn State strength and conditioning director John Thomas and speed and agility specialist Sherman Armstrong to his staff after last season.

“It’s very different, and different is good. It’s definitely good,” King said. “We’ve adapted to the changes that have been made and everybody’s on board with what those guys bring to the table.”

King said he and the other skill players have been drawn particularly to Armstrong. The former track All-American at Illinois has been in Tampa training players for the NFL combine since 2008.

“Sherman’s a guy who knows how to run and runs well himself,” King said. “He’s a guy that us skill guys, we want to imitate his moves and learn everything we can from him because it makes us better.”

The Bulldogs’ summer routine included running and lifting on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and doing boxing and agility drills on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with team runs on those afternoons. They also run pass skeleton and position drills at least two days a week.

“Tuesdays and Thursday are long days because you wake up and do that boxing, then you go to class, eat lunch, come back over here, do speed and agility, then pass skel or position drills,” King said. “So those are long days, but they’re definitely beneficial.”

After first official team meeting of the season on Tuesday, the Bulldogs will undergo medical and physical testing on Wednesday and have the first practice Thursday on the Woodruff Practice Fields.

King said he is in the best shape of his life. He said he can speak for the entire team when he says there is no dread and nothing but anticipation for the opening of Georgia’s preseason football program.

“We’re ready to go,” King said. “This is what we train for. We train to play football. So we’re ready to get out there and compete with each other and make each other better.”

Those Penn State players better get “ready to go” since practice starts on Tuesday. I think Monday is the deadline that many teams are giving the Penn State players to decide on transferring or not. I think they will lose a few….but not many. I think the RB and a LB are the only ones that have come out and said they were thinking about it.

Once Mitchell comes back, look for the deep threats to take off, and the rushing game to benefit, as teams roll 8 out of the box because of the deep threat. Tavarres King makes big plays, in big games.

I read where they were not only boxing but they were undergoing MMA training. Some of them where saying that was what was getting them into great shape. Since we face 8 teams that finished top 30 in pass defense, I don’t expect big passing numbers, this season must be about the rushing game, as we only face 1 team that finished top 30 in run defense.

Jim. I really think that Mitchell will be so good at CB that he will not go back to offense for more than a few plays a game. I thing the guy to watch this year is going to be Justin Scott-Wesley. I think he is going to do what Mitchell did last year at receiver.

If we try to throw on 8 of the top 30 pass defenses in the country, you’re looking at 20 interceptions, maybe 40 sacks, and an 8-4 record. I don’t see how you do that with an inexperienced o-line, that combines for 30 starts.

On the other hand, we only play 1 top 30 run defense, Mizzou. So, I say line them up, and run the ball and hope your defense hold teams to under 30 points.

kerryb

Jim, I disagree with you. Missouri ranked 61st in defense last year and lost some D-linemen. They are not even 2 deep on the D-line with good players. I think the other receivers Bennett, Conley, Scott-Wesley, Brown, and if Wooten comes back healthy are good enough to keep the double team off King.

I love the fact we play USCe in October and think we have a decent shot of being undefeated at the UF game. However I worry about that game and I think UF will be greatly improved. USCe is overated and the loss of Ellis really hurts. No LB’s or DBacks. Spurrier is carrying on about the schedule because he knows he is gonna lose about 4 or 5 and maybe he can still get them into a Jan 1 bowl if he bitches enough. He knows it’s all about the money.

Jim, don’t believe all of this hype about Missouri. They don’t match up with us on offense or defense. My prediction is that we will win that game by 2 or 3 TD’s. Their QB is going to have a hard time staying upright to throw the ball with our front 7 coming after him. I also don’t worry as much as some about our OL. We’ll have a good mix of some veterans with experience and some good young athletic players instead of the big slugs we had last year.

Wacky, you are right. Look at Murray’s stats compared to Andrew Luck’s last year. He compared well to him and only threw 4 more INT’s than he did. I read an article on the NFL Network site a couple of weeks ago when he was at the Manning Camp. An NFL scout loved him. The only knock he had on him was his height but he said he was just as good as Matt Barkley. Said Murray had smooth footwork (so he apparently has been working on that) had a surprisingly strong and accurate arm for his size. Said he had no problem making all the throws from all the levels. This will be a big breakout year for Murray. QB’s make huge jumps from their So to Junior year if they had started all three years.

Apparently not very many fans know that Mitchell was one of the best Defensive Backs I think Corners, in High School. We just needed a fast receiver last year so he ended up on the Offense . If we use him correctly he will be a difference maker and will be All American before he leaves. Future First round draft choice.

So Mizzou is not one of the 5 losses?

Jim

July 27th, 2012
1:52 pm

Tight ends won’t be a factor this year in the big games, they have 0 starts, no experience, don’t even know what to do on the field. If we don’t find another deep ball threat early on in the season, since teams will take Tavarres out of the equation, then like the LSU plan, teams will sneak a safety up, blitz, forcing early throws and quick decisions. Until we show we can beat it, look for teams to use that LSU plan on us, 8 in the box, stop the run, blitz Murray, make us throw deep, low percentage passes. I think Murray went 39% completions in that game, with 3 turnovers.

ESPN did a deep analysis of Murray when blitzed, and it showed he basically has no poise. Expect to see a lot of that.

LeftCoastDawg

Jim – to kerryb’s point, Mizzou can roll coverage to Tavarres all day but that doesn’t mean they will stop him for one, and secondly it will mean that Murray (who is very good at checking off his receivers) will have a field day using his TE’s, Brown, JSW, etc…

I just don’t see Missouri being able to stop all of our weapons on offense. I don’t think their defense is going to be good enough. I was listening to a radio show that had one of their media guys on it. He was thinking they may go 8-5 or 9-4 this year because they have no depth.

LeftCoastDawg

@Jim – so you don’t think Richt and company realize these same points? Murray has improved each year and no doubt will improve on the poise factor as well this season. Having game films like the ones from LSU and Michigan St will only serve as education. The mark of a good team is how they overcome their mistakes. AND, one last thought, your comment about the TE’s having 0 game experience doesn’t hold a cup of water. Orson Charles came in as a freshman and performed admirably. Jay Rome has been in the program long enough to step on the field and make an impact in this system. Watch and see, then come back and admit how wrong you were about it all.

McGarity has stated that he expects Georgia to improve every year. If the Defense is as good as we all hope, they will be able to play for 60 minutes and will prove last year was not a fluke and that we indeed have a great Defensive Coordinator in Grantham. This will put tremendous pressure on Bobo to prove he is worthy to stay Offensive Coordinator.
Grantham has been at Georgia 2 full years now with his recruits, can’t count the first year because he changed from 4-3 to 3-4. But when Georgia is mentioned by anybody all they talk about is the Defense. A pretty good complement for Grantham and the potential as a top 5 Defense in the country.
Bobo has been Offensive Coordinator for 5 -6 years now and very few complements from anybody. All you hear is underachieving with the talent he has on Offense. This year will be Bobo’s put up or shut up year.MCGARITY IS WATCHING.

I like that this upcoming Georgia team seems to have chemistry and that to a great extent, there are really no big name players. I mean, don’t get me wrong; J.J., Murray, Mitchell, and a few others may have some cache, but I think that this group can really draw together on the whole TEAM concept.

I think this can be a very good group. I think they can overcome some of their inexperience and depth issues. I think the coaching staff is going to have to play to their strength and make some adjustments in the early going. Overall, I like what I am seeing today.

I just don’t see us having the depth to do much more than we did last year. We have an unproven O-line. We haven’t had a good O-line in years. Love the defense, but they wore down at times last year and ran out of gas. Whose going to run the ball, tin man Richard Samuel? We don’t have a big time running back and the Richt/Bobo brain trust doesn’t let freshmen running backs do anything of substance. We’ll have gobs of young talent wasting away on the sidelines because they haven’t learned how to pick up the blitz in the triple X 24 takeoff 48(b) double HH package.

Anyway, I predict a season very similar to last year. We’ll be a solid top 15 to top 20 caliber team because of the defense and some playmakers on offense, but a lack of depth, sub par O-line play and Mike Bobo’s flag football play calling will hold us back from achieving any more than that.

Thanks.

The OL is going to surprise folks because they are athletic and not as big as last year’s group.

Still gonna be 315, 310, 300, 310 and 315 with backups of 305, 310, 305, 295 and 300.

We have 7 right now ready to play SEC football and 3 others trying to get there. If Beard, Theus and Ward can learn techniques, we have 10 to rotate.

The nose guards are both up to 365 each. NO ONE is going to run the ball on UGA.

Me, I’m just looking, optimistically, forward to the season and choose to believe that we are as good as some people believe we can be. And why the hell not? I mean what good does it do the ‘Jims’ of this blog to be so damned pessimistic? Are you/they angling for the ‘I told you so’ award? Nobody around here’s giving those out so far as I know, so why? Are they simply trolls whose only purpose is to yank on Bulldog leashes just to hear/see us growl? Regardless, I’m looking forward to a successful season where Steve Superior gets his butt whipped enough, including by us, that he’ll decide that maybe its time to get back on down to Florida…where we meet a ‘Brother’ Saban-coached Alabama in the SEC game and thrash his a$$ severely…and where Jim here decides its time to move on, or at least change his ‘handle’ (or whatever they call it…then again he probably does that several times a day already).

From what I’ve read, Mizzou’s major threat is J Franklin’s arm and legs. He’s close to Tebowesque but not as good. He also doesn’t have the supporting cast level talent that Tebow did. A decent OL, a decent TB and mediocre receivers. If the Dawgs defense remains stout, Mizzous offense shouldn’t be a problem. Mizzou’s defense is certainly the expected weak spot on the team of a team that wasn’t impressive last year and they lost 7 starters

Not to open up a can of worms, but how could there be 100% participation during the summer, if Aaron Murray was allowed to attend the Manning Camp then spending two weeks on the west coast being a counselor at the Nike Opening (Oregon) and then (California) at the Elite 11 Camp?

Just asking?

Mitchell will be used on Defense but all you have to do is line him up on the line and Missouri will automatically have to double team him. He doesn’t even have to go anywhere and get worn out since he will be primarily playing Defense but just his presence will demand respect from Missouri. Let him rest some but using him as a decoy to take up two Missouri Defensive backs will open up the other receivers.

This is Friend’s second year coaching the o-line, so I expect more consistency. The talent is there. Also, boxing and MMA training is great for offensive linemen learning to punch out on defenders.

College football rosters are in a constant state of turnover so I don’t rely much on last year’s team stats. Different players, opponents, etc. make it difficult to generalize. I do believe you can look at individual players, but even there a lot goes to how future opponents adjust and how the player’s skills continue to develop during the off season.

UGA strugged to run last year. I don’t expect that this year. Malcome, Samuel, Marshall, and Gurley are all quality backs that were highly recruited. I also expect Marlon Brown is also a big, fast receiver who started delivering on his potential last year. Last year’s team had little balance on offense and I expect that balance to return this year.

The real concern during this off season has been the losses and suspensions in the defensive backfield. Moving Mitchell will help but that is the major vulnerability of the Dawgs. Especially early in the season. Richt has said Mitchell fill focus on defense, especially early in the season with the heat, and they will work him in on offense as the season progresses and the temperatures drop.

I agree the biggest bright spot we had was Defense last year.
Even with all of Murray’s turnovers and disastrous special team play we would have won two of the 4 losses if our SENIOR field goal kicker hadn’t missed half of his attempts. I will never understand the criticism of any of the Defense and Grantham.

Good analysis and I agree with it mostly. However, last year performance is really the only yardstick available for comparisons IMHO. It’s nothing more than a place to start. Remaining players usually only improve with experience and time. How much is the hardest to gauge

Bhahahahahah, UGA the perennial underperformers in early season road games is going to show up in Columbia, Missouri and roll Missouri by 3 TDs?

Good lord, did happy hour start three hours ago? Ask Colorado if Mizzou should be worried about this occurring at all. In all likelihood, UGA will be lucky to score 3 times much less win by 3 TDs.

In reality, reading unbiased sources about Missouri, this is shaping up to be an embarrassing trip to the Midwest. Missouri apparently is loaded at WR with a stable of quality personnel to match up against UGA depleted and suspended secondary. Without a dependable running game on which Bobo can turn to protect his overmatched CB, look for a shootout which forces Murray to again make some ugly plays as the pressure builds which results in a loss to Missouri.

“I’m no apologist for Murray, he had a few bone head plays but the OL last year was atrocious”
***********************************
ARdawg, that’s true about the O-line. But Murray is now a 3rd year starter, and he’s got to tuck the ball and take the sack, or throw it in the stands. His “bone head plays” cost us dearly last year.

His 4th quarter vs SC was amazing – TD pass for us – fumble for SC TD. TD pass for us – pick-6 for SC, etc, etc.etc. I don’t know if UGA would have been in that game without him – 42 offensive points – but in the end, he gave it away with the fumbles and Ints.

Hopefully, he cleans that up – if so, we should roll . . .

Joey

Hollywould, you do realize that the “Honey Badger” didn’t play against our D, right?

Go watch the game again. Most of those yards came after the fact, after our offense had about 10 straight 3-and-outs in the 2nd half.

The D didn’t lose that game, or the SC game, or the MSU game. Even in the Boise game, the D played well, even without our two stars (Ogletree and Rambo), until our short punts and offensive 3-and-outs took its toll.

Ask Paul Johnson, Gene Chitzik, Spurrier and Muschamp about our D.

Hate to rain on the fantasy parade but the other side of the coin is wide open WRs streaking unmolested across the field are easy to hit before the lumbering UGA DL are able to make it to that QB and with the huge problems which UGA will have in their secondary for that game.

I disagree with anything you said. It should be noted that the Sophomore curse is alive and well. Yes he cost us dearly with the picks and turnovers. But, IMHO, as I stated, it wasn’t all on his shoulders. An atrocious line, shackled with some very weak play calling and add to this his own missteps it was a disaster. He put us in a position to win and to lose a number of times

With that said, 3rd year starter, much more mature, experienced and overall better in every facet. We can and should expect more from him this year and I believe we’ll get it. Yes, he should have tucked and took the sack much more than he did and it cost us. He’s much more prepared for that this year. Will the OL perform, will the play calliing improve?

UGA does not have a huge problem in it’s secondary. Damian Swan was a top corner coming out of high school and played in some games last year. Brandon Smith will miss the first game and not the second, Lakatos and Grantham are already saying that Mitchell is probably the best CB and that’s including Commings. They’ve also had some good things to say about Devin Bowman at CB. Corey Moore will be filling in for Rambo. Moore was one of the top safeties in the country out of high school and he had playing time last year. UGA’s secondary is more than enough to handle anything that Missou will throw at them. Especially with a true freshman WR. Now, try to talk about something you may actually know something about. It’s not football.

We saw how far that defense came along during last season. Now, it is all together for one more year. Why do guys think ESPN ranked Murray as the #2 most overrated QB in the nation? His 14 interceptions, 33 sacks, 0-9 record vs. top 20 teams, 0-2 Bowl record or something else?

We do not what to tell ALA and LSU that UGA players are working extra hard. They will work harder. UGA let’s go get our national championship rings this year.

Sounds like the ghost of Erk Russel is in those meetings w/strength & conditioning coaches. He ran his defensive players until the sun went down but come 4th qtr they were still getting after it not drag a$$in. Maybe we’ll see the same this season as coach T gets players to buy in to it. Only thing to do now is fix the special teams and not get outcoached during big games.

If the defense is as good as we all think Mitchell may not have to play but 3 plays on defense, then they punt. If offense controls the ball and Defense is stiffling He should have plenty of time to play offense.I cannot imagine him sitting on the bench when the defense keeps the other team off the field and we have long drives for TD’s…Oh yes…I forgot..we are a passing team…But as I said if the defense holds the opponent to 22 minutes on the field and the offense is on the field 38 minutes he should be rested.

We need to have T King show up for all 12 games this year, instead of the 1 regular season game where he broke 50 yards last year.

yep- what a wasted effort- once again, we can lay it at the feet of our “award winning” QB and our FG kicker……same story- just a different game.
This comment has me concerned…..
He said he can speak for the entire team when he says there is no dread and nothing but anticipation for the opening of Georgia’s preseason football program.

Dread?????????????? really?????????????????????????? that probably can explain why we are where we are and Bama, LSU, Auburn and Fla have won NC….dread for a season to start?????????? Coach that is BS!!!!!

Comment above meant it sounded as if there was ‘dread” before but not this year

We also need to have a QB that quits handing points to the opponent and giving them the ball on STUPID decisions and mistakes. My bet is Murray will have at least 2 int in the missouri game….one will lead to a Tiger TD. Afterwards, we can listen to him blame a receiver…..CMR will blame the defense……and we will be 1-1……….on our way to a 9-3 year.
