ATHENS — “Currently, Georgia is not pursuing any of Penn State’s football players. We wish Coach O’Brien and the players the best.”
That statement came from the UGA’s sports communication office to beat reporters a little after 5 p.m. on Friday. It came as a raw statement without any context or explanation.
I happened to be talking to Christopher Lakos, one of Georgia’s associate directors of sports communications, just before the email was sent out. All he could tell me was the release was simply “a message Coach Richt wants to get out about something he’s been getting a lot of calls about.”
You’ll recall that Richt on Monday told reporters covering the annual Greater Atlanta UGA Days event at Cobb Galleria that the Bulldogs would in fact be interested in recruiting some of the Nittany Lions players. The NCAA, in its historic ruling against Penn State for covering up child sex atrocities committed by a former assistant coach, announced that Penn State players would be allowed to transfer anywhere without penalty and that schools would be allowed to openly recruit them.
Here’s what Richt said Monday:
“We do have some space available and if somebody fits a need and they’re excited about coming we would look into that possibility,” he said at the Cobb Galleria Centre. “There may not be anybody. But we’re at least going to explore. … I don’t want people to think we’re trying to load up a bunch of them. It could be zero, it could be one or two.”
One of two things has had to happen since then: One, no Penn State players expressed any interest in transferring to Georgia; or, two, Richt and UGA had a change of heart.
I was skeptical from the get-go about what Penn State might have to offer Georgia. The Bulldogs were recruiting finalist for two of their players, redshirt freshman defensive end Deion Barnes and junior linebacker Khairi Fortt. As we all know, Georgia is pretty well set on the defensive side of the ball. Penn State running back Silas Redd is apparently close to transferring to Southern Cal. Otherwise, it doesn’t appear there is going to be a lot of movement.
It’s late on a Friday and I have somewhere to be this evening, so for now I can just throw it out there for you guys and see what you think about it. The Bulldogs report for camp next week and we’ll start having regular access to Coach Richt and players, so we’ll get more from then later.

Think that UGA decided to get first interest from a player rather than recruit and none were forthcoming.
Their OL is not big enough for the SEC anyway.

Sure they’re not big enough. The rushed for more yards on Bama than Florida, Vandy, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss State, and Auburn combined. Only LSU rushed for more yards against the Tide than PSU. I think Georgia could have used 1 or more of those guys.

I don’t really care if we get any of their players or not but why would anyone in their right mind want to play or coach there now? Even if you rush for 2500 yards and 40 touchdowns, they are still going to mention child abuse before they talk about your stats. Everything that program does now will be associated with the molestation of young boys. Just sad. I would transfer as quick as they would let me. And If I was O’Brien I would beg Belichik for my job back.

Not sure what UGA and CMR are thinking on this one… If I were a student athlete it would be difficult to continue at PSU, not only because of the NCAA sanctions, but because it would be hard to be loyal to a University that would hide such atrocities. The University of Georgia should offer these young men a place to continue their careers, and they are needed at UGA. The Univeristy is making a mistake in favor of ‘politically correctness’. Just my opinion

There appears to be some trouble interpreting a simple statement. UGA is not (currently) pursuing any Penn St. players. That could change tomorrow if a Penn St. player contacted UGA. I don’t expect it to happen but it would require a player to show initiative.
This is going to be a great fall. I am looking forward to a healthy Brown showing what he can do as a starting WR. Last year he avg. over 15 yards per catch, he’s listed at 6′5″, 222 lbs., and is a sprinter. If people double King, Brown can make them pay.

We don’t need the slow Big 10s players when we got SEC talent with speed from Dream Teams. The Big 10 is always getting spanked by the SEC. It cause we better and knows how to playing best at football. Coach Richt won more games last decade than Joe “kiddie showers” Pa. And that even with the sorry schedules in Big 10 where all the badly stinkys teams plays each others. But truth is none of them could make team for Dawgs and they used to losing to.
The one thing that Penn St players gets if they play for Coach Richt is learning to be Christian instead of Sanduksy treatment of kids. But they not getting that even though they needs it. Cause they not good enough to play for Dawgs and learn to walk in path of Lord under Coach Richt.

When did the word explore & pursue start having the same meaning ? You can’t make me believe that some other colleges aren’t going to look into a player who might be EXCITED about transfering to their school ! It’s the players choice. They have the right to if they wish to. It’s not the players fault that Penn St. is in this mess. If I had a son there I would advice them to make the best of their college experence ! Bowles Championships National exposure ETC. It’s still fresh you’ll see some players wish to transfer. BE REAL PEOPLE This is a once in a life time for these young men. What about those who opt for the NFL early. Does that make the NFL the bad guy ? These young men where recruited under a false promise SO way not let them have the full college DREAM ! The guilt is not theirs to bare nor any school that weclomes them ! GET REAL

The comment from Bob was about rushing yards against Alabama.
PSU rushed for 107 yards aganst ALA which was more than Arkansas (17 rushing yards), Florida (15), Vandy (41), Ole Miss (28) MSU (12) combined.
These numbers certainly show a “well established mismatch” between the SEC and other conferences.

I don’t think Richt was ever really “recruiting” their players to begin with. He simply said UGA was interested if they were interested in UGA. Coach O’Brien even commented on Richt calling him and letting him know his interest, and even commended Richt on doing so, saying “he did it the right way”. I still think if one of their guys really wanted to come to UGA, Richt would give him a shot, and as well he should. There is a big difference in what Richt and a few other coaches did and “poaching”.

Getting a Penn St player is not going to help UGA. They have been put on this high pedestal this year of winning the EAST but that is not going to happen. Everytime UGA is put on a lofty pedestal they fall quickly. There OL is not experience and their running backs are mostly inexperienced. I bet they have a lot of fumbles this year and Murray when under pressure will crack and cough it up just like he has done in the past.

The players from Penn State needed to know if there were programs out there that would take them at this late date before renouncing their Penn State scholarships. The Penn St players would have been crazy to just walk away from PS and their scholarships and not have schools that would welcome them on campus with a scholarship.

It is really pretty simple to almost all of the trolls on here, who have now shown they wouldn’t know what a football is, if they set on one and it became a permanent part of their anatomy, that in fact, a lot of the kids at PSU are going to stick it out. It has become a “We will show you”, type of situation. To take a kid with maybe one year of ball to play, in the case of seniors and juniors would not have made sense, and secondly, these kids are playing there because they like the region. Half only know what they learned about the south from a 7th grade geography class, and the other half know, they wouldn’t have a lot of chance for playing time. Up north and in the mid west, football is a diversion but in the south, it is everything.

I agree with Richt about chasing players already in the school. However, I believe they should go after any commits not yet enrolled–that seems to be fair game for everybody. Penn State has a tight end commited for next year that was interested in UGA and Ga. seems to have missed on all the upper tier tight ends ( I think the kid’s name is Brenderman??)

That what we always knew is Saban is a cheating. He come into GA and try to steal recruits that Dawgs own. But that why we don’t need the Joe “kiddie showers” Pa slow poke players. We own recruiting in GA where talent is better than stinky Penn St. Why we want to waste time recruiting slows players from Penn St when we are the dawgs and gets any player we wants.

Penn State didn’t go under because of a corruption of players like SMU. I imagine a lot of those players at Penn State would look at Georgia as another candidate for negative things to happen. The reason Georgia has room on their roster is exactly what this Penn State crowd doesn’t need after what they have gone through. In many respects UGA is a looser outfit than Penn State. They keep telling us and the press repeats it, that they are fitting it, yet here they are looking for more bodies because they have not fitted it. And now Richt has made a decision, the dicision was made for him by disinterested players at Penn State I am sure.

Three, kind man that he is, Richt probably doesn’t want to act like a vulture circling over Penn State (like Lane Kiffin). Except for IL and one other coach, the Other HC’s from the big 10 said they would not go after PSU players for moral and ethical reasons. could be CMR followed their lead and issued statement GA would not pursue those players. Thats not to say any one of these coaches nor other coaches in the US would turn PSU players away if they came calling and had a spot for them. From reports out of happy valley these kids are sticking together at least for this season. May see some defections in coming seasons from the younger players especially if things go south and losses pile up. The new PSU HC is former asst coach from the Patriots and listening to him in interviews one is impressed w/his attitude and pedigree. I wouldn’t doubt they’ll show up and be in every game they play. Wish them all the best.

To prey upon someone when they are down aint’ exactly “Christian” anyway. Coach O’bien, doesn’t deserve this. None of this mess his fault. Now, if a player comes to you own their own, that’s a bit different. My advice is to try to control your own players. Put in place some mechanism that will stop your freshmen recruits from “clubbing” at 3 in the morning. Also would see if I could figure out how to “game plan” for the second half. The whole world knows we get outcoached during the games.

Those abused that way were the PSU players by the NCAA. They didn’t do nothing but now they can’t go to any bowls and have to play short handed with less schollies. The only way the PSU players don’t get violated that way by NCAA is to transfer out immediately. But we don’t need them at UGA cause we got better players already. The PSU players could probably transfer and helps a team like the Vandy Commodes, Kens Tuck, Dooley Boy Orange Pumkins or even your Gaytors.

Plus I have a feeling some people (PLAYERS, COACHES AND OTHERS) made it clear to CMR that they simply do not want any PSU players on the roster. Georgia Tech has the nation’s highest average SAT score for football players, and also the highest average high school GPA.
UGA, on the other hand, has one of the very lowest SAT averages, as well as a very low GPA average. As a result, three-fourths of UGA players are “special admits,” when means that they can not meet the minimum educational and intelligence requirements for admission to UGA, even as low as that is.
Yes, it would be great if Tech was more competitive with UGA, but Tech fans are proud of our heritage of having intelligent, responsible athletes who go on to rewarding careers and contribute to society.
Contrast this with the very unintelligent dummies that UGA recruits. The fifty arrests over the last four years is proof enough, not to mention winning the Fulmer Cup. Most of these goons are tossed out after their eligibility is over, and many end up on welfare.
UGA is clearly just a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y dedicated to winning at all costs, and most UGA fans are okay with this, with no concern about the embarrassment this brings to the State of Georgia.
Mark Richt is the architect of this situation. As long as he is paid a huge salary, he will continue to recruit the illiterate brain-dead t-h-u-g-s who he thinks will win. Unfortunately for UGA fans, he’s not remotely in the same league with the top coaches in the SEC.
So the bottom line is that Georgia Tech – win or lose – does so with honor and integrity, while the lowlife punks, woman beaters, drug users, and drunks in Athens continue to embarrass us all.

You know there have been years (RECENTLY) that GT wassn’t graduating their athletes any better than UGA. And the GT athlete comes in with better high grades and test scores (so you say). IF GT recruits athletes have say 1800 SATs and 3.7+ GPAS out of HS (which the vast majority DO NOT) that does NOT make GT or ANY school more honorable than other schools. And if 1800s and 3.7s don’t graduate from college any better than 1400s and 2.7s, then what? PENNY: until GT is Stanford is athletics and academics (nowhere close) HUSH YOUR MOUTH ABOUT HONOR AND INTEGRITY!

CMR would have taken players from Penn St, if they showed an interest in UGA. I think the vultures (Lame Kitten – USC) and other coaches should approach Bill O’ Brian (Penn St. HFC) before contacting the players. If Will Muschamp is contacting Penn St players, I hope he has gone thru’ the coach first. They are still Penn St. players even tho’ the NCAA says they don’t have to be.

The right thing to do.
After the national media and Lane Kiffin shamelessly recruited Silas Redd for USC, this was the right thing to do. Apparently the media is tired of the SEC dominating the national championship series and want to do everything in their power to promote USC. Their active recruiting of Mr. Redd on behalf of USC was disgusting. I wish Mr. Redd all the best if he decides to go, but I don’t have to respect his decision or his new team if he does. Besides, there are no Georgia born players on the PSU squad. I would not expect that they would be interested in GA. If the roles were reversed, I don’t know of any Dawg who would necessarily have Happy Valley as their priority.

(NBC sports – I have no respect for NY based media either) And it should not be news that none of the players were interested. Many are from the Penn area. Do you really think after this scandal they would transplant all the way to Georgia? Richt is different from Kiffin in that Kiffin will do what ever it takes to win. Richt won’t. And then Dawgs have more talent and depth this year unlike last year. Aaron Murray knows how to beat Gaytors and Coach Grantham has D best it been in years. That makes Dawgs top in East and just looking for rematch to beat the LUSer Tigers. Sure they aren’t but its not like HD wouldn’t accept them if a couple of guys wanted to switch, most limpet Richt saw what a douche kiffin looked like by going after their RB and decided to have a little class. Something kiffin knows nothing about.

The “superiority” of the SEC over other conferences is actually the superiority of the one or two best SEC teams over the one or two top teams from the other conferences. I mean, does anyone think that the 3rd or 4th best SEC team would beat Oregon, USC, Ohio State, Texas or Oklahoma most years? Or Boise State and TCU? Maybe once out of ten tries. It’s not like we sweep all of our bowl games every season.

Case in point: Georgia, last year’s SEC East winner, has lost to Oklahoma State, UCF, Boise State, and Michigan State in recent years.

The top teams in SEC like Dawgs would do a beat down on other conferences. It cause we stockpiled deep talent that we always unloading the whooping can on scrub teams that best in other conefrences. Coach Richt knows how to build depth from recruiting best players based on getting them to NFL. Wel’l show how bad Big 12 is when we expose Mizzou to real football in the SEC. Then they know how far away they are from SEC quality.

The last few posters hateing on UGA were on one of the teams we spanked last year, lol. The four losses were to teams ranked in the top 11 in the country. Have to do better this year. To you losers on a UGA blog posting hate, one question, did your team beat a team ranked in the top 11? Probably not…

king daddy is whether or not you’ll even be able to field a team this year. what are you frawgs at now? 65 players on your team.
not only that but the recruits are finely wising up to the fact that the dawgs more often than not are 3d place also rans. but for playing in a weak division last year the dawgs would have probably lost to ucf in the bowls again.
how many recruits have picked other schools than the dawgs this week?

UGA had a bad week all the way around over the last seven days, I don’t know what in the hell CMR was thinking on this one, but it has only caused more distraction and mayhem.
Recruiting is a mess, we are short on players for the season and little to nothing is being done about it….
Season tickets and parking are high as hell and keep going up! Somebody better get with the program or people will quit paying these exorbitant prices from mediocre results…

[...] After recently expressing interest in reaching out to Penn State players, Mark Richt now says he is not pursuing them. Here is what Richt said in a statement: “Currently, Georgia is not pursuing any of Penn State’s football players. We wish Coach O’Brien and the players the best.” Richt either had a change of heart or the Penn State players showed no interest. [AJC] [...]

After 11 years on the job, I think it is safe to say that we pretty know what we’re going to get from Mark Richt. Some Bad, some Great, and a whole lot of Good. Richt is no Nick Saban, who despite his epic failure at the Pro level, clearly knows what he is doing when it comes to building a college powerhouse. Richt is also no Les Miles, who knows how to come into an established program and keep it at peak level. What Richt IS: is a guy who can overachieve with “B-level” talent( David Greene, Thomas Brown, Fred Gibson etc.) but when he has NFL 1st rounders like Knowshon Moreno, Matthew Stafford, and A.J. Green; he just can’t put it all together. Theoretically, a team should improve when their talent improves, but at UGA that is not the case.
Taking into account that Richt overachieves with “B-level talent”( which is what he currently has), I think the Dawgs will have a decent year IF everyone can remain healthy. Overall, the 2012 schedule is very navigable. Getting Bama off the schedule is a huge break, and facing South Carolina in October will benefit the Dawgs as opposed to having to play them at the beginning of the year. Richt’s teams tend to get better as the season goes on, and I think the Dawgs will go on a bit of a run in 2012 like they did in 2011. Florida is horrible, as is Tennessee. The Dawgs will beat both of those teams again, although those games probably won’t be the blowouts we as fans will want/expect them to be.
I like the Dawgs to win the SEC East, go 11-1( losing to a Mizzou team on the road early in the year), and get to the SEC title game.Either LSU or Alabama will emerge from the West. I say the Tigers or Tide win something along the lines of 37-24 or 35-14. The Dawgs will then get hosed and end up in a non-BCS bowl( I’m thinking Chick-fil-A or Capital One) with that game being a tossup depending on how much the players actually give a crap.
I say the Dawgs finish 11-3 or 12-2, leaving the Bulldog faithful with our traditional ” What if’s, shoulda woulda’s, and wait until next(recruiting)season!
