UPDATED THROUGHOUT . . .
HOOVER, Ala. — I’m going to have a lot more for you a little bit later, but for now I’m going to give you just the high points and raw quotes from the beat-writer’s session with Georgia coach Mark Richt here at SEC Football Media Days this morning.
Richt will address the full media contingent here at the Wynfrey Hotel later today. Players Jarvis Jones, Abry Jones and Tavarres King are also here and I talked to them as well and will share their thoughts as soon as I can get around to it.
Now for Richt . . .
>>>As you might expect, the conversation was dominated about team discipline. We hadn’t had a chance to talk to Richt about Isaiah Crowell’s dismissal since it happened on June 29. So he talked about that and about the perception that there is a lack of discipline at Georgia.
On having to kick Crowell off the team: “Well, no decision to dismiss a guy from the team is an easy decision. It’s always tough because I care very much about all these guys. Having to make those kinds of decisions are tough. But, in the end, I think we did what was in the best interest of the program. I wish Isaiah the very best in his future and I hope everything will work out for him.”
>>> On type of kids they’re recruiting: “We’re not recruiting bad kids,” Richt said. “We’re competing for the same guys everybody else is in the league.”
>>> On perception there is a discipline problem at UGA: “We’re certainly going to have an expectation for how we want our guys to behave. If they don’t behave, we’re going to discipline them. So if the discipline involves running up and down the stairs at the stadium or some things that might be at the level of losing playing time or it might be something at the level of losing your ability toi stay at Georgia, the thing we’re going to do at Georgia is we’re gpoing to take care of any issues that do come up in the proper way. And so, if a guy does end up having to leave, it’s for the best interest of the group. From time to time that has to happen. It’s sad that it does but we’re going to keep taking care of business in that way.”
>>> Richt remained mum on whether suspensions are imminent for safety Bacarri Rambo, cornerback Branden Smith and linebacker Alec Ogletree. All have been reported to have run afoul of Georgia’s drug policy and Smith is known to have been arrested for marijuana possession.
Asked if he knew what personnel would be available for Missouri, Richt said” “Do I know? I do know, yeah.”
Asked if he cared to share that information, Richt said: “We’ll share it sometime, but not today. I’ll announce that if there needs to be an announcement on those guys.”
>>> On tailback situation without Crowell: “We’ve got some really good backs. It’s going to change Richard Samuel’s role certainly.”
>>> Richt on being picked by media here to win the SEC Eastern Division. LSU was tabbed as overall champion:
“I hope the media is right. I was looking at the record of picking the eventual champion and it wasn’t real good (4-16). Maybe you guys are a lot better at picking divisional champions anyway. But it would be nice to get back to Atlanta.”
>>> On how much Malcolm Mitchell might play wide receiver this season: “We’re getting him ready to play as much defense as he can. . . . I think by the time the season is over we will have seen a lot of Malcolm on offense. Early on, I don’t know.”

I agree with GTBob, The excuses for Richt are pathetic. Of course the other SEC teams have their issues as well but once again UGA is in the running for the fulmer cup and the image of the university has been tarnished. If the people in charge of UGA are going to have a stricter policy than the other SEC schools then they also need to be stricter in the kind of kids they are bringing into the university.

Also , not sure who told you this was “equivalent ” to a 16 player probation cut. When that happens, the NCAA doesn’t ask you which 16 player you want to get rid of that aren’t working out for whatever reasons.
Not saying being down in number is a good thing, obviously. But this is apples and oranges of being limited 16 scholarship scholarships.

Seems to me, players who cant hack the rules or constantly get in trouble…want to transfer to where they can get away with more nonsense. Theres a low tolerance around Athens these days with law enforcement, and the university.

If it makes you feel better about the mess in Athens, keep believing that G-Dawg. The problems will end just about the same time a new leader is announced. My guess is about a week after the Tech game.

Careful what you wish for,GTBob. You ever heard of the Death Penalty – 3 seperate Probations REQUIRE it. Two down, and One to go!
I have nothing against Tech – even pull for them in their big games. I just have to retaliate a little against petty techies like you gtbobbie.

There are no requirements for the death penalty and GT is in no danger at all of getting it. Sorry to kill your dreams.

Wow you are one sad little loser, huh? From a quick glance it looks like you have been on the ajc blogs all day for maybe several mnths and all you do is bash Georgia. First of all get a job you deadbeat welfare cheat. There are few things more pathetic than someone like you who has time to run his suck all day every day but won’t work. LOL LOL LOL
In fact I won’t even ask who your team is because it’s obvious you are another of the many ga text boys who is too ashamed to claim his team. I bet falcon fred has never even read a Falcons blog much less posted on one. LOL What a pathetic little sack of nothing.
Really?

Fulmer Cup

Bad Dawg says, “once again UGA is in the running for the Fulmer Cup.” Have you bothered to look up the Fulmer Cup standings? Even after the Crowell incident, which was worth 8 points, UGA has a relatively measly 12 points, tied with South Carolina and Pitt for 6th place, far behind Arkansas with 68, and TCU with 37.
And the year UGA “won” the cup, they had 21 points, well behind Bama’s winning score of 28 in 2008, and Auburn’s record-setting 81 points in 2011.
Now you can argue that “winning” once is too much, but don’t come on here making stuff up, though to be kind, there is much misinformation being spread on these blogs about UGA, and you probably posted in innocence.

I would like to see documentation on what was posted about the OU president saying they were not interested in joining the SEC because of academics and the recruiting cesspool. That does not sound like something a college prez would say, and I am guessing his actual statement was altered by the poster, who I take it is not an SEC fan.
IF that is the exact wording, my apologies to the one posting.
I kind of doubt it because OU is not exactly an academic powerhouse, to my knowledge (someone may want to post their academic ranking and prove me wrong) and the school that employed Barry Switzer should probably not be throwing stones concerning recruiting. (Reference Marcus Dupree and the house Mama Dupree wound up living in, as an example.)

AD,
Lord knows if Richt had the same “deal” with the Athens PD as my hometown PD has with our high school football coach, and UGA had the same drug testing penalties as most NCAA football programs, we would never hear a negative peep out of our football program (other than a shameful loss or two). In fact there was an article on ESPN.com about that a month or so ago.
And I’m not saying I like it – to me, all programs should have the exact, same rules and penalties. We are at a disadvantage numbers wise because of this.

falcon fred, if you knew a little about UGA football, you would know the “Tech game” is the reason UGA hasn’t changed its “leader” in 11 years.
Appologies on your decade-long coma . . .

Fulmer Cup, Anywhere in the top 10 makes the university look bad especially when your favorite team is on the list year in and year out. I never said UGA was going to win it all but they are certainly in the running. I would much rather UGA be considered an actual top 6 team in the AP than a top 6 team for the Fulmer Cup.

Richt is a longtime pathological liar. Believe nothing that he says, it’s all part of his delusional condition.
