HOOVER, Ala. – A short time ago I had the pleasure of having a semi-exclusive interview with LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger before he began to make the media rounds here at the Wynfrey Hotel. A couple of LSU beat writers and I were able to spend 10 minutes talking to Mettenberger in the Buckingham Room here soon after he and his coach and teammates arrived for SEC Media Days.
Mettenberger is, of course, a former Georgia player who was dismissed from the team shortly before pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery in the spring of 2010. He grew up in Watkinsville, Ga., as a huge Georgia fan and his mother has worked in the Bulldogs’ football office for 10 years.
Now he finds himself as the starting quarterback for national championship-contender LSU. You need to know nothing more than the fact that the Tigers chose to bring him to Media Days despite Mettenberger having never started a game to know how they feel about him.
I’m writing a story that will appear in tomorrow’s print section — and online as well — but I wanted to go ahead and share the interview I had with Zach as a Q&A since it’s the most extensive opportunity I’ve had to talk to him since he left for Butler Community College in Kansas in the summer of 2010.
So here you go . . .
Q: Were you surprised that LSU asked you to represent the team here today?
A: “Not really. I’ve just been working hard to be a leader on the team and I think the coaches have seen that hard work in me. They believe I’m a well-spoken individual who’s capable of representing this team. It means a lot that they had that trust in me to let me come here and know that I’m going to represent the team well. I’m a little nervous being here, but if I can get through these butterflies then I’m going to be all right.”
Q: Does it feel like a practice run?
A: “It’s kind of a big first practice [laughs]. There’s a lot of people here. I’m just going to try to have fun today and learn from it.”
Q: How does is feel to now be the undisputed starting quarterback?
A: “I’m very comfortable. It’s definitely a lot different. I guess I won’t really know until we get on the field and start playing.”
Q: Have you spent much time contemplating the event that got you to this place?
A: “No, not really. My Mom working at Georgia and being at Georgia my whole life, I thought I’d be at Georgia now. But that’s not how God wanted it. That’s not the path he had for me. So I’ve dealt with the adversity and I think I’ve handled myself pretty well. So I’ve just got to keep working every day to better myself as a player and a person.”
Q: Is it your ultimate desire to face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game?
A: “Just getting to the SEC Championship Game my first year as a starter would mean a lot. It wouldn’t matter who we played. Regardless, it’s a goal I have this year. Hopefully we can get there.”
Q: What do you think it would be like facing Georgia?
A: “It’d be, not awkward, but it’d be kind of funny seeing all my old roommates and old buddies over on the other sideline and playing against them. It’s something I look forward to, but not any more than if we played South Carolina or Florida.”
Q: Do you have any Georgia gear anymore?
A: “No I don’t actually. I left it all at my house in Watkinsville.”
Q: Have you been back home much since leaving UGA?
A: “Maybe three or four times I’ve been back. I don’t get back a lot. I don’t have a lot of time to drive 10 hours and go see my parents. When they have a chance they come see me as much as I can.”
Q: When were you last in the Athens area?
A: “Actually I was there over spring break. I was in Gulf Shores (Ala.) and I just drove up to Athens one day and showed up at Mom’s work. It was a surprise for her. She was happy to see me and I was glad I did that.
Q: Did it feel strange being in enemy territory like that?
A: “It’s different, but it’s my hometown. It’s really not awkward or weird for me to go back. A lot of those coaches have known me since I was 10 years old.”
Q: Did you get a chance to visit with your old position coach, Mike Bobo?
A: “I saw him. We had a good talk. That’s a guy I’ve known since he was a G.A. for Georgia and my mom first got the job. It’s been great having him as almost a father-figure in my life. He gave me some good advice while I was back home.”
Q: Are you still good friends with any of the Georgia players?
A: “Me and Aaron are definitely good friends. We lived together for a year. I know we had the competition but, despite that, we’re very good friends. I roomed with Dallas Lee, Austin Long, Blake Sailors. Blake and I went to high school together and I grew up with him. So there are a lot of guys I’m really good friends with.”
Q: Are parents going to LSU games?
A: “Yeah, as many as they can make. I can’t wait to see them. Hopefully they can make them all.”
Q: Doesn’t your mom go to all the Georgia games?
A: “She hasn’t been to a Georgia game since I left.”
Q: Is there something behind that?
A: “No, she supports everybody on that team because my buddies are all like sons to her. But because I’m not playing there’s really no point for her to go. She’d rather stay home and watch it on TV.
Q: How has being the starting quarterback changed you?
A: “I’m just trying to everyday develop my leadership ability. This team doesn’t have a lot of leaders right now, so we need some guys to step into that role. I’ve been working hard every day trying to get the guys to rally around me to be the offensive leader. We’re just trying to make the offense better and hopefully we can go out there this year and execute.”
Q: Are you feeling any pressure about the position you’re in?
A: “Not really. I was just telling somebody, I’d rather be in The Swamp right now playing a night game than talking to all you guys. I’ve never really gotten nervous before a football game. I don’t know what it is about me but that’s the way it’s been since peewee and high school is over. I really haven’t gotten nervous.”
Q: Word is you guys are going to be airing it out behind your big arm this season. That true?
A: “I’m definitely excited. As long as I can get the ball in the hands of the playmakers on our team, my job is easy. If we have to run the ball 100 times I’m will to do that. I’m here to win ballgames, not to promote myself as a quarterback, just to be a winner for LSU.”
Q: Are your parents still big Georgia fans?
A: “Both of my parents are more LSU fans now than Georgia fans now. That’s just because they love me and support me so much.”

I wish Mettenberger nothing but the best, but he needs to realize God didn’t make him get thrown off the team. That was his decision and God forgave him and allowed him to have a second chance. I hope he makes the best of his playing time unless it is UGA vs LSU in the SECCG!

I think the kid is saying that after the problems at Georgia happened…..God opened the door at LSU and he is doing well there. I agree totally that God didnt want him to committ a crime of sexual assault but rather….will take us when we do make a mess and work it out for us. I hope that is what he is saying at least!

What a disgusting answer. “God had different path?” Zack, YOU chose this path. It was bad enough what you did in that bar but then you went outside and made it worse. Then you came home and lied to Richt’s face.

Hutson Mason is better than aaron murray but will never get to play. The canning at UGA will give Mett an opportunity to play QB at a great college and venue each week not the mention the millions now obtainable after getting away from richt and UGA.
H Mason should have transferred to VANDY, sat out this year and started the last two years giving himself a chance at Pro football. Never will happen at UGA unless AM gets hurt whcih no one wishes on any player.

Yeah this one stings because we all know the Mettenberger is slightly better than Murray skill-wise…decision-making is still up in the air. And the whole “God chose this path” part…maybe, maybe not because he works in mysterious ways, but I don’t think making someone else a victim is God’s way of paving a path. Dude is not on our team anymore so we really shouldn’t care too much. How about some interviews with current players please.

What a joke! God led him to where he is today. Yeah, God would really force you to do harm to a girl. Idiot. Glad CMR cut you loose. Sounds like CMR needs to cut his mom loose to. That way she can just move to LSU with her MettenBaby.
There should be a new rule. If you are thrown off a team in D1 football then you cannot ever play D1 football again. There shouldn’t be additional chances for low lifes that cannot follow the rules the first time. There are so many more kids that deserve a college scholarship but instead we give two, three, four and five chances to idots like Mettenberger, Crowell and the likes. The NCAA should step up and put a rule like this in place.

Mason is a taller Joe Cox. Brings nothing to the table. If Lemay isn’t ready to go by the time Murray leaves, it will speak volumes about him. If UGA is lucky, Murray will stay two more years, Lemay will get one or two, then Brice Ramsey will take over. If Mason finds his way into the fold, something is very wrong.

If we were all punished for life for something we did at 18 years old, none of us would have jobs. My family knows his, and I can tell you first hand: he is a great kid who did something colossally stupid. He paid the price, got a second chance somewhere else and has done everything right since he got it. There is no God. Everyone makes their own decisions. There is no zombie son of God either. Jesus may have lived back in the day but he wasn’t the son of God, he was a spiritual teacher. Live for today, not for the promise of a happy afterlife. What good does that do for the world we all know and live in? Not the next life some believe in.

@ lil_bit1…you said “Im glad some of you know God so well that you know how He personally deals with Zach. Thruth is, you can not say that God didn’t allow Zach’s actions just to bring him where he is now, spiritually, physically and mentally.”
———-
The truth really is that any person that has read the Bible will be able to say with confidence that God had nothing to do with Mettenberger’s choice of actions. God did not make him do anything or encourage him to commit his actions.
Simply put…God could not have been involved in Mettenberger’s actions because had HE had anything to do with Mettenberger’s actions, then that would make God just as guilty. If God was guilty of doing anything wrong, then God would immediately cease being God because HE would be less than holy and perfect. Therefore, God was not involved in a sinful act.
The good news is that God is a God of forgiveness and grace. His unmerited grace extends toward everyone that asks for forgiveness of any sinful behavior. Let’s assume that Zach is genuinely sorry for his actions and has asked for God’s forgiveness. According to the Bible (God’s authoritative word), God forgives everyone that comes to Him in repentance and puts their sinful past as far as the east is from the west.
Consequently, since God has forgiven Zach Mettenberger and knowingly acts as though it has never occurred, shouldn’t the rest of us forgive the young man and hope that he moves on with his life in a positive manner? Everyone makes mistakes.
Zach has tried to move on to a new opportunity…support him…encourage him…be happy for him.

I don’t think Mettenberger meant to say it like that but it’s to bad that he had to learn the hard way. What will get you kicked off Georgia faster than anything is to lie to Richt, that’s where he draws the line. Sounds like Mett. is a lot more mature now than he was when he got into trouble but it does should like he and his family does have at least a small grudge and if that is the case neither he or his family think what he did warranted him getting kicked off. I hope he doesn’t have a sister because I still don’t hear any deep sorrowful regret. I paid my debt is all I am hearing. What he did was a felony but to keep him out of jail and Pro football the victim must have agreed to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor.
I have two daughters and I guarantee he wouldn’t be at LSU right now if he had done that to one of them. I wouldn’t have been so easy .

Amusing to regularly read posts on here about how Mason should be starting over Murray.
1. We are supposed to believe Mason is a better QB, and would give UGA a better chance to win, but Richt will play Murray over him? That makes a lot of sense.
2. Forgive me for thinking someone who has coached two Heisman QBs, the one time winningest QB in the college game, and the #1 NFL draft choice, may actually know a little more about evaluating that position than some guy posting on an AJC blog.

Falcon Fred…if you had a daughter and a loudmouth, drunk, punk sexually assaulted her, how would you feel about young Mr Mettenberger’s coppin the God’s Will angle? Cause if she were my daughter the kid’s Dad would have had my a$$ to whip. As for his lying to his coaches, clearly that’s got as much to do with his being gone as anything else. And I still say that any player that’s dismissed from an SEC member school for ’cause’ – like his kid and like Cam Newton – should have to serve more of a penalty than if they had simply transferred and sat out a year, and that all the other members should honor at least a two year ban.

I agree with Joe_T. God did not choose this exact path for him, and to say that is totally incorrect. We are given free will to choose in life. To understate the obvious, Zach made the wrong choice that led to his dismissal from UGA, a dismissal that was absolutely justified and correct. Its not the choice God wanted him to make. After that fact, God has not given up on Zach, and may very well have opened this door for him to turn things around at LSU.
Thats the thing about God’s grace. No matter how many bad choices we make or how severe they are, He never gives up on us and always opens a new door. Hopefully Zach learned from his mistakes, and will grow into the man God wants him to be.

I get angry whenever I read about this guy starting at LSU. Then everyone is all over CMR for the discipline problems at UGA but for the 2nd year in a row LSU will start a QB that has had problems in their past. The Gators have problems because Urban had no discipline.

By the way GOD could care less about who wins a football game. His only concern is how each one will spend eternity, in heaven or hell!!!! He created us and loves us so much that he sent his son Jesus to die for us while we were yet sinners and anyone one who beleives in him shall be saved. That’s all there is to it.

Well said BRO and you forgot to include Isaiah Crowell. I guess UGA will be playing against Crowell in a year or two but Crowell very likely will suffer some financial loss if he makes it to the NFL because they do a lot of background checks on people that will be making big bucks.
Unless Crowell stays sweeky clean his signing bonas will be approximately the same as my son’s allowance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next, Mettenberger did play better then murray in a spring game, but that was a spring game. So many people on here act like mettenberger has proven something already, he hasn’t. I forgot who it was, but stafford got outplayed in the spring game one year and he was the first pick in the NFL draft. Look at Murray’s numbers facing SEC defenses, with a horrendous running game and offensive line. Mettenberger may have a great season, but at this point he has not proven a thing to me.

This hate for Mett makes me sick. His dream was to b e a DAWG. He committed to UGA in high school and never wavered. One disputed “grab” in Valdosta ended all of it. But we all know that 100% of accusations made by drinking college girls are accurate and small town cops never seek attention with trumped up charges. Even if the accusation was completely true, is it worth losing all of that? No. This was life-changing and likely still hurts. The haters are showing their ignorant, HYPOCRITICAL backsides on this one. Show some class.

For those of you who hate Murrary, Mettenberger had as much to do with him being entrenched as the UGA qb as anyone. In Murray’s 2 seasons as the starter the Dawgs have started 1-4 and 0-2. Those starts weren’t all Murray’s fault, but Richt would have tried a popular and qualified Mettenberger to give the team a boost. If Murray struggles this year I believe that LeMay or Mason will get a chance. As a Dawg fan I hope Murray has a great year because that will be good for UGA, but I also hope that LeMay gets some playing time.

If you haven’t received salvation in Jesus Christ and read your Holy Bible good bit, then you should not speak in ignorance about God and just talk about football. I like talking football, but knowing God and being confident in eternity in heaven is the most important thing. You, like us all will bow down someday and say, “Jesus is Lord!” Hopefully, though, you will know God’s love for you before death so you’re not eternally seperated form God and burning in hell. No business more serious than that.

I hope that UGA and LSU meet while M is LSU’s QB, and I hope he beats Richt’s brains out on the field. Poetic justice. Richt should have pulled his scholarship for a year but should have given him the option of a second chance if he, Mettenberger, acknowledged his disgusting behavior, expressed remorse for his actions and promised to walk the straight and narrow. If not, then kick him off. I do not condone what he did, but I believe in a second chance. Richt has overlooked a lot in his tenure at UGA. Seems Richt has only “seen the light” the past few years.

Pitiful dawg fans like Adawg, dawgster, Ryan ,7576 dawg all make UGa sound like they are the dominant team in the league and are among the best in the nation. They talk about good CMR is and the SEC titles and Eastern division titles but yet none of happened in the past five years with the exception of the “gift” given to them by the SEC schedule makers and even them they lost EVERY game that meant something. Boise, USC, LSU, MSU all put the doggie pups back on the hind teat.
Where are the BCS titles, where are the BCS CG appearances. UGA cannot win the outback bowl, or even Liberty Bowl. And now we find out that CMR is so desperate he is allowing drug test failures to play against Missouri.
CMR and UGA fans are desperate and those are the real facts.

He’s at LSU because he knows that in all likelihood he’s either going to win a championship or be a runner up for a championship year end and year out. In case you forgot LSU has won two championships the last couple of years and was the national championship runner up this past year. As a Georgia fan I can still be ticked off that Mett’s immaturity and poor decision-making cost me the chance to see a great QB talent play for my team, and that even worse, I know have to watch a rival club scoop him up and use those talents AGAINST my team.
It the same with Vick – as a Falcons fan it still ticks me off to watch him play against my team. He’s a gifted, exciting talent that screwed me out of the chance to watch him lead my team to great things.
And then both of them have the nerve to play up some vendetta, as if their departure had nothing to do with their own idiocy.

Get a clue. UGA hung 52 on your boys in your own stadium last time in that dump. Then you were dominated in the first half of the SECC game until UGA shot itself in the foot. Les Miles is only 2-2 vs. UGA. One title win…one loss. Last time LSU was in Athens, UGA was having a bad year. It still took a phatom penalty to get you the win. Dominant? Owns UGA?
Thats not ownership ignoramous. Don’t let facts get in the way though.

Stafford had as much talent as any coming out of high school and was very good at UGA but was not utilized to his full potential. Hope that he is able to stay healthy again this season because him and megatron are a good combo. Stafford knows if he has any doubt at all, just throw it up his way and tron is usually going to come up with the catch.

This isn’t a Georgia story…its an LSU story. Pathetic to still try and take shots at UGA. Why doesn’t the ajc just quit covering UGA? You guys despise them anyway. Always looking for the negative. Gutless.

It’s funny how everyone says Zach is better than Murray. They base it on him throwing a couple of TDs in a spring game against a second string defense in a new system. When he throws for 59 TDs and over 6,000 yds in two seasons I might want to give your argument some merrit. Right now let’s just enjoy what we have, and what that is, is the soon to be most prolific passer in school history. Check the numbers. I don’t want to hear about his record either. Freshmen season’s can be thrown out record wise. If he blows it this season, then you can call it whatever you want. I personally think we’re fortunate to have a talent like Murray.

Truth, no, I was not around then. However, historians and archaeologists have used “The Book” for guides to find many historical places that previous archaeologists had given up on finding, by using the Book of Acts to locate these now buried historical evidence that The Book is true. By the way, the Bible is a collection of letter, of first hand witnesses to the fact that they knew Jesus. Read the first verses if Luke, John, 1st John to read their first hand comments.

God does not choose anything you do. he has no control whatsoever over what you do. It’s nothing but a crutch, for all of you “so called christens” to fall back on. You hide behind the bible to cover your mistakes because it gives it a reason, albeit a twisted one. I grew up in the Christen church and this is what I have observed over many years. Lets get down to the human fact here. YOU are responsible for what you do. No one makes you sexually take advantage of another, only to make it a path to redemption. I completely understand why you don’t come home to Oconee to much, as it is a small town and there are many people who are not too happy with you still. It would be nice if the young upcoming “stars” would realize that they should behave, or at least learn to behave and use their gifts wisely.

Murray, Mett, Mason — Who is the best of the three
After 2 years of Murray I can honestly say that he is no better than average QB in the SEC, definitely not a winner or leader:
Murray == short, weak arm, poor timing, poor decisions, not smart
Mason == tall, great timing, better than average arm strength, good decisions, very smart
Mett == tall, better than average timing, very strong arm, better than avg decisions, avg smarts
2012, failure will rest on the shoulders of the UGA qb JUST AS THE FAILURE OF 09, 10, 11.

I’m not jumping on the bandwagon that says Huston Mason was better cause he’s probably Joe Cox 2.0.

You must attend UGA practices to know all that about Hutson Mason. I hope your not going off of his High School Career because he played at weak a** Lassiter High. Aaron Murray has something more important than Hutson Mason or Zach Mett. Wins in the SEC as a starting QB. While Aaron Murray was starting in the SEC Zack was starting at a Junior College. Chris Mortensen was on 680 The Fan yesterday and was at the camp this summer that so many high profile collegiate QBs attended. Without equivocation, he stated that Aaron Murray was the best QB. He was interpreting from how the QBs would be evaluated by NFL teams when he arrived at the conclusion that Murray was better than the competition at this camp that included Mettenberger, Barkley @ USC, etc.
So here’s the rub… we can consider Game Changer’s opinion about Murray (and for that matter his views on Richt & McGarity) or, in this instance, an expert. While Game Changer uses the term “we” when referring to UGA, consider the context of his messages. Game Changer has not changed his game.

I doubt it.
His answer is just a way of evading a true answer to the question and taking responsibility for his actions.
A better answer would be that he made a poor choice and lost his Georgia scholarship and LSU offereded him the opportunity for a second chance and he will not make that type of mistake again.
He doesn’t appear to have grown up a bit and may have problems at Baton Rouge too.

You didnt like his choise of words. Great. But you are reading into his heart now? Really?
I have read 2 other articles out today on that same interview and he sounds very much taking responsibility for his actions. Which seems as if that would be the logical guess, not even reading a word he said.
And on the specific topic: Either you believe God has a plan for your life or you do not. Simply a matter of belief. But if a person does, and since we all make mistakes along the way, that’s part of it, is it not?

God — despite what ZM said in this interview — had nothing to do with Zach Mettenberger being at LSU. The fact he put his hand up the skirt of a woman and grabbed her crotch….then LIED to Mark Richt about what he did is why he is at LSU.
Mett may very well be a decent individual. I hope he is. He could be the second coming of Dan Marino on the football field. I wish his all the success in the world.
However a man who gropes a woman then starts a ruckuss, then LIES about what he did….sir…take responsibility for your actions and OWN IT. Say “I messed up.”
Don’t ever say “God had another plan for me.”
You got another opportunity, Zach — and i’m glad you did — i believe in 2nd chances.
However don’t bring God into it when you groped a woman and lied and that’s the real reason you’re at LSU.

And do you really think he meant that God made him grab some girl’s butt? He made a big mistake at the age of 18. He paid a price. I’m sure getting booted from the team was a blow to him and the year at Butler was filled with uncertainty.
The kid got himself back together and put himself in position to get a second chance. He got that chance only through some harsh intervention with Danny Abramowics, former Saints WR, who is a good Christian man and testified for him to Miles.

If God is omnipotent, God could have directed Mettenberger’s path in a very different manner. Did God allow those closest to Job to die? Yes. Yet God chose to allow things to occur and Mettenberger ends up starting for LSU. God is either omnipotent, or He is not God. @AltamahaDawg…and a paltry few others…once again the voice of reason. Such vitriol on these blogs is, sadly, far too commonplace. I dare say that if the Mettenberger could have replied to the Q&A in writing; with ample time to say things “just right”, well, his responses would be a little different. But it seems every article here brings out negative reactions. Way too many ‘glass half empty’ types.
I agree totally that Zack seems to have paid the price and moved on. We should move on too and not create ulterior claptrap.
What does the Mettenberger Q&A have to do with Murray vs Mason? The vast majority of pundits and coaches across the country have Murray being all-SEC and even Heisman material. Just the fact that CMR and CMB have him as the starter should prove something. But, alas, many bloggers are spotless in their daily lives, have never made mistakes, and know more about football than CMR and CMB.
