Muschamp: Keep Georgia-Florida in Jax; ‘Coach Dooley never complained about it’

HOOVER, Ala. — Will Muschamp, Florida coach and former Georgia player, got the obligatory question at SEC Media Days about whether the Georgia-Florida game should remain in Jacksonville.

Yes, he said unequivocally, citing the tradition and the special setting along the St. John’s River.

Then he added: “Coach Dooley never complained about it being there.”

Georgia was 17-7-1 against the Gators in Jacksonville during Vince Dooley’s 25 years as head coach. Since Dooley’s final season as coach in 1988, Georgia is 5-18 vs. the Gators, including 5-16 in Jacksonville (2-3 in the past five years).

i think this will have to change when the SEC goes to 9 conference games. It will have to. UGa PAYING FANS are not going to lose a Home game with Florida to pay for a Buffalo.

Game will have to go home and home when schedule goes to 9 games. No way Dawgs can afford to play 5 or 6 SEC games on road and 3 or 4 at home every year. To big of a disadvantage, plus robs fans of a quality home game every year.

It’ll stop being in J’ville, when both schools have an extra couple of million dollars laying around that they don’t need.

@ AltahamaDawg – great link that you provided. But I’m confused – I thought UGA was the only place where college athletes ever got in trouble?

I’m with Skitty Fritty – tradition is no reason to keep the game in Jacksonville. Rotating every other year with Atlanta would make good business sense (for the state of Georgia) and give the players a chance to play at the site of the SECCG, which I assume both teams aspire to every year.

It’s the University of Georgia, not the University of Athens or North Metro University. UGA is the flagship university of the State of Georgia. The same goes for the University of Florida. Both teams have a large almuni base throughout their respective states and beyond. Jacksonville is on the state line, whereas Atlanta is nowhere near the state line. It may be further for the team to travel to Jacksonville, but for UGA alumni and fans in Savannah, St Simons, Valdosta, etc., the game in Jax is a tradition and often the only game that is feasible for them to make. That game means a lot more to businesses and the community of Coastal Georgia than it ever would to the city of Atlanta. It would be just another game in Atlanta, and there would be nothing special about it. I’ve been to UGA games in the Georgia Dome (2005 Sugar Bowl, 2006 Chick Fil A Bowl, 2011 Kickoff Classic) and it doesn’t compare to the gameday environment in Jacksonville.

As we play all these high school games in Athens and this years home schedule is awful, we need the Florida game as a home and home. While I agree the programs recently don’t have much to do with location and everything about coaching.

Keep it as it is. In these days of immediate gratification/chasing the almighty buck, something such as tradition needs to be upheld. I get tickets every year and enjoy the trip. As long as they have the stadium split 50/50, who cares? The Atlanta GA Dome didn’t seem to provide any advantage to the Dawgs in the SEC game.

Coach Muschamp is, um, mistaken. In response to price-gouging by Jax merchants and innkeepers, which affected Dawg fans vastly more than those other fans, Coach Dooley declared that the contract was up for renewal the next year, and that “there is nothing magical” about keeping the game in Jacksonville. Room rates and restaurant prices returned to normal the next year. I believe that this occurred in the mid 1980’s.

MONEY for HOME UGa games will make this game move. IF the BIG MONEY So. Ga. fans are willing to PAY to keep the game in JAX it will stay. IF UGa season ticket holders in the Northern part of the state STOP paying for the Ga Sou, Coastal Carolina, and Buffalo’s as part of the season ticket package the game will MOVE. The DOME is good enough. Hop a flight to the ATL get on MARTA go see the Game and do the same to go home. Dad & I did that for the ACC CG against Wake years ago. The RICH UGa fans on St Simon, Jekyll or Sea Island can afford the Trip or own a plane themselves.

Twinkie, the little stub you hold in your hand isn’t the only thing fried. You don’t get to opt for which tickets are purchased in season ticket packages. You take the good with the bad, just so happens this year is pretty bad. We still get TN and the Bugs this year in Athens, both games of which would fetch the cost of a season ticket.

The game is just fine right where it’s been for over 50 yrs. I find it very difficult to understand how anyone who has ever been to Jax for this one of a kind game could suggest discontinuing one of college footballs greatest traditions. For those who suggest the Ga Dome, why? Now that’s a dumb suggestion. So long as the current financial arrangement is in place, we can’t afford to move.

Let’s leave tradition alone.

Forget all the “whereas’” and wherefores’,,,,,, the game in Jacksonville is catagorically not fair. It is a home game for Florida every year. Even Spurrier said that and he now has nothing to gain from it.
Play it in Jacksonville every other year and the GA Dome every other year. Whom every said “Georgia in the Dome did not have the right feel” has not seen the Georgia/Florida game in the Dome so how would he/she know. Florida will always have the advantage in Jacksonville.

Stupid idea, Thd dome doesn’t hold near as many people.

Dooley went 17-7-1 there. Was even joked back then that Georgia won so often that the name should be changed to the Bulldog Bowl.

Believe me, back in the Ray Graves and Doug Dickey days Florida fans complained about it
just like Georgia fans are doing now. Spurrier made the Gators believe they could win in Jax.
Florida looks at that game like its the most important one on the schedule,Georgia prepares for that game like the this is still 1979 and Florida is on par with Vanderbilt.Think about last year we had to come from behind to beat the worst Florida team in over twenty five years last year.We just need to concentraton on winning and stop worrying where the game is played. The stadium is divided half and half
or pretty close anyway.

Some folks are ignorant of the history of the Ga-Fla game and have a short-term perspective. Many of those same folks don’t understand the dynamics of this game. Winning or losing has nothing to do with the fact that it is played in Jacksonville. It has everything to do with the players on the field and in some cases with the coaches on the sidelines. We have won there before and we will win there again!!! You can take that to the bank. It would be an act of total, pathetic surrender to move the game because someone thinks Florida has a “home-field advantage”.

We are going to resume kicking those pompous gator “tails” (substitute the expletive of your choice) and we are going to do it in Jacksonville!!! Any Dawg fan who doesn’t believe that doesn’t deserve to call his/her self a “Dawg”.

florida has all the advantages playing in jacksonville–short bus ride for the players and the dogs have to travel for hours on planes and buses and they are tired out when they get to town. mcgarity needs to demand a lot more money for ga to keep playing there or move the game to athens or atlanta. I’m tired of ga loosing down there almost ever year.

The game has been played in Jax. Regularly since 1933. Leave it there. The Ga. Dome sucks for football. Too much pumped in music. A concert with a footbal game. When Atlanta builds an open air stadium then talk about moving it.

I agree it should stay in Jax- great tradition and environment, unique to Ga-Fla rivalry, but who cares whether Dooley ever complained? That was long ago and the game has changed drastically since Dooley’s day, especially in terms of finances and recruiting.

Now that Ganesville and Athens have paved roads, the UF-UGA game should be played ON CAMPUS to make it fair to rest of SEC Eastern Division teams that have to play HOME and HOME (ON CAMPUS)
