HOOVER Ala. — SEC director of officials Steve Shaw was first up on Day 2 of SEC Football Media Days and there was much to discuss with regard to rule changes in 2012.
First and foremost is the change on kickoffs. For safety reasons, the placement of the ball has been moved up from the 30- to the 35-yard line. Shaw said the move was made in order to induce “more touchbacks, less collisions.”
However, touchbacks have also been moved up for the offensive team from the 20- to the 25-yard line. So defensive-minded coaches aren’t necessarily inclined to readily give up those five yards.
Florida coach Will Muschamp, for instance, said the Gators are discussing alternatives.
“We have talked about some sky kick situations,” Muschamp said. “We’re looking at directional kicking the ball with height and see if we can pin them back a little further.”
They’ve also instituted a rule that protects the receiver when the kicking team attempts an onsides kick with a high one-hopper. In the past, the kicking team could strike the receiver before he touched the ball. Now that receiver is protected from being hit until he has had a chance to field the ball.
Other changes, mainly designed for player safety, include:
And finally, “coaches’ sideline behavior” will be closely monitored.
“We have great coaches in this league and we don’t think there will be anything here for us,” Shaw said. “But I think nationally we’ve all agreed that anytime the coaches’ behavior on the sideline is demeaning to the game we have to deal with it. And we will.”
You’ll recall that, Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin had a nose-to-nose, postgame confrontation this past season.

ESPN talking heads this morning predicted a 7-5 season for Florida….with Florida losing to Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, South Carolina, and FSU. One even said that Florida might have difficulty beating Jacksonville State. All I have to say is…..there will be a lot of egg of ESPN faces at the end of the year.
One of the ESPN reporters interview Jon Bostic, Florida talented MLB, and Jon told her what I have been saying on these blogs……Florida’s offensive line is going to be greatly improved.
Muschamp again proved he is not a head coach you mess with if you are a player…..by doing something that embarrasses the U fo F…….you go elsewhere…..A.C. Leonard, the very talented but stupid TE…..is transferring (here that, Ole Miss?).
One thing about Muschamp (from watching him again this morning)…..he is all business and extremely serious about the kind of program he is building at Florida. He is defintely the polar opposite of Steve Spurrier….personality wise.

Good for Muschamp. I like that guy. Always have since he was at LSU. Those close to the program knew he wasn’t just babysitting Saban’s defense. He was more of a DC than the media led people to believe. He had his guys pleying hard in BR long after the game was decided, and Miles told everyone who would listen that he expected Muschamp would turn the Gators around sooner than most expected.

The new rule on onside kicks is going to create a lot of controversy. If there are 3 or 4 guys in the area to field the kick, what is the kickoff team supposed to do? Wait patiently until one guy grabs the ball? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of an onside kick?

Also, the idea that Grantham is great is based only on 2011, certainly not 2010. Look at the offenses we played last year, how well did we stop any of good offenses? LSU in 1/2 game? Florida with a qb that was falling down on his own, Tech with 230 lb linemen and a 170 lb qb, Boisie, Michigan State. What good offense did we really stop?

Don’t I remember them moving the ball (TB) out to the 25 back in the md 80s for a while? I’m thinking it was actually the 30. We called it the Butler Rule. Lasted about a year. Or am I disremembering that.
Hard to know how this will really affect the KOs in term of limiting run-backs (collisions). Even kicking it into the endzone, much less the returner bringing it out is a pretty rare occurance now anyway. I guess downing it (behind the line) would be a no brainer for the receiving team now. But who knows what the kicking team is going to do in light of this.

I do NOT get the helmet rule. Maybe work with the manufacturer on it, or stess it, figure out the problem. What does forcing the player sitting out a play accomplish? And finally, “coaches’ sideline behavior” will be closely monitored.
I think they are refering to Muschamp as well….
A botched punt return by Chris Rainey may have been the pivotal moment of the Gators’ 17-6 loss at No. 24 Auburn. The Tigers took the ball back at Florida 32-yard line and scored a touchdown three plays later.
Replays showed that Auburn’s Onterio McCalebb may have interfered with Rainey, who had signaled for a fair catch. Florida coach Will Muschamp clearly believed that and he made his opinion forcefully clear on the field.
After the game, he said he could not talk about it — probably because the SEC would penalize him for publicly ripping the officiating.
But if you want to know Muschamp’s opinion in his own words, the website sportsgrid.com has footage of Muschamp screaming at the officials with pretty clear audio. This video is not suitable for kids. Click here to view it. I don’t think I can post it on our website because of the language.
Among the advice Muschamp gave the refs: “You guys ain’t got no guts, man. Throw the flag. Be a [expletive] man.”

I say we kickoff from the endzone so there are no touchbacks at all. Also, I am sick of helmets and pads. They make football players weak, get rid of them. Also, all rules against hitting the QB or helmet to helmet contact should be thrown out. If a player dies on the field then it was his own fault for not playing better. The ISSUE is that the helmets have 4 point chin straps but the Players like to look COOL and only use 2 or 3 points to strap to. Look at the Classic games on TV and see how many players have at least 1 strap flying free in the wind. IF all 4 straps are connected the chance of the helmet coming off are lessened.

You want to stop collisions on kickoffs, so you move the ball up 5 yards. Now if the kickoff team kicks the ball into the endzone and it’s downed, you penalize the kickoff team by bringing the ball out to the 25 yard line instead of the 20.
So for protecting players that the rule is intended to do, you screw the team kicking off. Anybody out there want to help me with this one!!!!!!!!!

The new onside kick rule is asinine. It basically requires the kicking team to allow the receiving team to catch the ball. How high must the ball bounce for the new rule to apply? Can you even imagine an SEC official trying to figure that out? This new rule will basically eliminate the onside kick as we know it. Now you apparently must kick it along the ground and hope it does not hop up into the air. Imagine the collisions that will occur at ground level – looks like a broken neck about to happen – after all, if it doesn’t bounce “high” you can hit him. He’s going to be low and the kicking team guys are all going to be low trying to keep the receiver from getting the ball. That will be an extremely dangerous situation. Under the old rule the receiver just got the hell knocked out of him but no head or neck involved – usually gut or chest area. Talk about something that makes no sense!

Just get rid of onside kicks, which are extremely dangerous for players. Get rid of the live ball after it goes 10 yards and make it like a punt, the kicking team can’t touch the ball until it hits or is touched by a player on the receiving team. If you score with a minute left to get within 7 points and have no timeouts left, tough luck, you lose. Play better next time.

IMO Franklin is a loose cannon and will say/do anything to bring attention to himself and Vandy. Grantham had every right to be upset and I have no problem with his response to Franklin. Franklin tried to turn the table after the fact but the fact is – his player was at fault.

bham….it happens yes. The unsportsmanlike comes into play when it is against players, coaches and sideline players you are not lined up against on the field. A DB talking crap to the WR he is covering is different than the same DB facing the other teams sideline talking crap to coaches and assembled players. the Taunting Rule was created for that purpose as well.

You gotta be kidding me. Richt has been so effective teaching kids to behave with class that UGA is constantly in the news for problems with the football team…beating up girlfriends, failing drug tests, underage drinking, guns in cars, driving without licenses, assaults, and on and on. Wow, what great class!!!

The people who make fun of the “DWAG” sign just show how out of touch with youth culture they are.
If you told them to “Google it” to find out why a college kid might have put “DWAG” on a poster, they’d probably think you were think you were insulting them.

Bham………I watched the Game and I have been to plenty of UGa games and it has been a constant. Look at UGa’s HISTORY of unsportsmanlike play.
I am not picking on trash talking. I am saying UGa players do it with flair and love it. Richt, Goof, Donnan and Dooley loved it and did nothing to discourage being classless. You can be a trash talker and do it right. Michael Jordan was the BEST at it but he did it right at the line. Basketball has the best trash talkers of any sport because the players, fans and bench are right there in your face.

Gratham’s chocking incident a couple of years ago was a new low for UGA, but I think that Muschump’s sideline behavior takes the cake. That guy berates the refs at all times. Nobody likes certain calls, but everyone else seems to realize that there are a lot of judgement calls that just aren’t going to be reversed. I think it was UF/Vandy where he practically followed the refs into the locker room.

schmeckdawg,
I agree with you. The kickoff rule changes are counter-productive. I really wonder what thought actually goes into many of these rule changes. They implement them for a year or two and then reverse them. And it’s not like many of the flaws aren’t obvious to the average fan before they are implemented. It almost seems like the rule changes are designed by people who really don’t understand the game of football.
