South Carolina: Spurrier would prefer Georgia’s schedule

HOOVER, Ala. – The question was about the perceived advantage of the open date on South Carolina’s schedule before the Gamecocks’ Nov. 10 game against Arkansas. But South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier veered in a different direction with the answer.

“You think I make the schedule?” Spurrier said from the podium at SEC Media Days. “If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.”

The schedule says otherwise, of course — South Carolina at LSU on Oct. 13 and Georgia vs. Ole Miss in Athens on Nov. 3.

Spurrier didn’t make more of the issue, quickly moving on by saying: “Not complaining about that other part I mentioned there.”

But he had made the point, not for the first time, that South Carolina’s cross-division schedule is more imposing than Georgia’s. Last month, at the SEC meetings in Destin, Fla., Spurrier proposed that such schedule inequities be remedied by counting only intra-division games in determining the SEC East and West champions. That proposal went nowhere.

Georgia this season draws SEC West opponents Ole Miss and Auburn (a combined 4-12 in league play last season), while South Carolina draws Arkansas and LSU (a combined 14-2 in the league last season). The Gamecocks have lost to Arkansas each of the past three seasons and five of the past six.

How many times will he cry me a river. Of course he did not make the schedule, nor did any head coach. I like Richt’s Answer. you line em up, make the rules and we will play the games. The real barb was at Saban and Alabama when mentioned its easier to win the NC than SEC. You will not hear it spun that direction, however.

Any one know ALA record against UGA and USC under Nick Saban’s rule? Wait for it…… one loss and one win each. That’s right a Whopping 500 against the the two front runners in the east and ALA does not have to play either. You know what Sabans record is against the only other decent team in the west. Thats right 500. So really when Saban sees tough competition he is right around the flip of a coin. Seems like ALA should be happy regarding their east schedule and shut up. be thankful your schedule has Kentucky, Vandy, Tenn of FLA.

And since when is playing USCe, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, GT and now MO considered weak.

Last I checked – Florida beat Ohio State.
USCe hammered Nebraska
Tennessee is improving
Auburn is getting back to being Auburn
And USCe is actually a very good team

My view on this effort: Stevie “One Hit” Wonder doing what he do. He takes shots at UGA and his base loves it. I don’t like the man. I don’t respect the man. But South Carolina guys do so enjoy. Mocking UGA’s schedule this year is idiotic by any standard. The SEC sets the conference schedule. UGA does not.

Where were all the folks who are whining about UGA’s “easy” schedule in previous years when UGA drew horrific schedules that a consensus of national writers and analysts called among, if not THE, toughest in the nation? Where were they when other teams in the SEC had the “easy” draw on the SEC slate? Spurrier has drawn his share of easy schedules as a coach in the SEC over the years as well. I don’t recall him mocking his own schedule in those years or pointing out how difficult someone else’s schedule was.

Mocking UGA’s schedule this year is idiotic by any standard. The SEC sets the conference schedule. UGA does not.

The fact that the SEC set it doesn’t really change the fact that it is an incredibly easy schedule.

This should be good. S. Carolina will beat UGA again but lose out on the division because of the harder schedule. UGA fans will get all excited about winning the east then they will get dumped on by LSU or Alabama in the conference championship…AGAIN. UGA will then wind up playing in the Outcast Bowl (pun intended) and lose AGAIN to some Big 10 team and the rest of the SEC will be shaking their heads in shame.

Well – Spurrier does have a point. GA has such a powder-puff schedule that most good teams would be able to win the SEC-East this year. Just like last year – who does UGA really play that is good this year?? You play a very bad UT team, one of the worst UF teams in 20+ years, an OK Auburn team (but nothing like they have been in the last 20+ as well). Other than that – NO ONE.
We saw what happened when your pups played BSU and the SC – got beat. And then the best of all – your puppies LOST to Mich State.
Maybe that is why UGA DROPPED the Alabama game for this year?? The doggies didn’t want to play a high caliber team. And please don’t give me that crap about “we held LSU in the 1st half of the SEC Champ game” – so did Miss State. In fact it was only 6-3 at the half – against lowly Miss State.
Even pitiful GT could win the SEC-East with UGA’s schedule this year. But UGA is TOO chicken to play Alabama. Roll Tide.

Steve Spurrier did not say anything untrue. Heck yes he would like to have UGA’s schedule along with 13 other teams. At the same time he is adding pressure to CMR by stating that UGA’s schedule is by far the easiest in the league. No, UGA did not make their conference schedule, it is not their issue, they are playing what is dealt to them.

Now moving on to the folks who keep bring up UGA’s RECORD against Alabama and LSU. Apparently not winning a BCS title is low on your success indicator list. Winning that final game of the year is much bigger than any win any other time. And LSU and Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee have pulled their weight when it counted.

No one on this blog knows what Georgia’s true strength of schedule is until year’s end. This could be the year the three strongest teams in the SEC are in the EAST (UGA, USC, FLA). All three will have great defenses, and that is what it takes to win in this league. If the DAWGS win the EAST, one thing is sure – they will NOT be ducking the best the West has to offer. GO DOGGIES!

The old school way was to keep your mouth shut and then go out and kick your opponents fanny.

SS has decided to let his mouth go and as long as he can back it up(which he has done for 2 years in a row) he can sit up there and look down his nose at UGA. In practical sense he has taken teams with much less talent and beat a UGA team with top 10 talent who did not get it done against top ranked teams. Now this is a new year and SS is just planting some very deep roots into the minds of the SEC schedulers in Birmingham. Will it work? Who knows, but he knows how to coach, and has proven it at three schools.

it’s just the way the scheduling has worked … a few years ago GA was playing the LSUs and BAMAs. It just so happens that LSU and Bama weren’t as good as they are now.

Nothing SS can do about SEC scheduling. It’s the coward McGarity who sets the utterly embarrassing
NC schedule … BUFFALO, FL Atlantic, GA Southern. And I think SS benefited from McGarity when he coached the Gators. Anyone else see the similarities of UGA’s NC schedule compared to when McGarity was at UF?

GA played FOUR teams that were consistently good in 2011 (Boise, SC, LSU, Mich St), and surrendered 35+ to all 4, going 0-4. Auburn & their “little bro” GT were GA’s signature Ws in 2011.

GA will appear to be a very good team in 2012 b/c their schedule is more favorable that 2011 (i.e. NO Boise St) GA fans just better hope the trip to Mizzou isn’t similar to the trip to Colorado a few years ago, and that Ole Miss, UT, Vandy, or UK aren’t improved from 2011 or there might be a couple Ls hidding in those games.

You’re right on the money about McGarity.

One thing you could say about Damon Evans was that he at least tried to include decent OOC games (Okla St, Colo, Ariz St, Oregon, etc.)–and had the guts to schedule them home and home. His idea–and it was a good one–was to “spread the UGA brand” out of the Southeast. Yeah, we lost a couple of those road games, but I’d rather do that than engage in the shameful practice of buying Ws over cupcakes. Of course, the Oregon series was never played; McGarity couldn’t get the Ducks off the schedule fast enough when he got here from fla, where he was a master of the soft OOC schedule (aside from FSU).

UGA OOC scheduling–disgusting, embarrassing, cowardly. The Dawgs are far from the only ones who do it, obviously, but that sure as hell doesn’t make it right.

@Heavyweight… you are telling me we schedule teams in our own division? no way man… Get a damn clue. 5 years ago the East was the division dominating. It’s all cyclical and it will swing back. Also, I am glad you included Louisiana Monroe bc the mighty tide got it handed to them in Ttown by this cupcake.

The ole ball coach is just stating the obvious. Why is everyone jumping on him? He’s done a great job at USC – certainly better than I expected. If he beats the Dawgs this year, and I think he will, I think he’ll win the east. I see UGA losing to Mizzou, USC and UF at least. Possibly AU as well.

bham dawg, I am saying that because I’m not impressed with your offensive line or your defense, especially considering the offenses you faced last year, including ours, which was slightly better than mediocre. Mizzou’s offense will be a challenge for the Dawgs, with or without Rambo. I think the Gators will be significantly improved, as will Auburn. As for USC, I don’t think that game will be close, especially if Lattimore is 100%

ARdawg, I stated an opinion. No need to show your ass by resorting to name calling. Spurrier has had a tougher time recruiting at USC. The talent base is much smaller than in GA or FL. Given that, I think he’s got it going. That’s not idiotic.

Now, hoping my second year DC becomes my HC, or giving him a big raise after one marginally successful season – that’s idiotic.

@GATiger… yea we never play USC close. Hard to be impressed with an offensive line you have never seen so I will hold off on my opinion of them until after a few games but i agree this is probably our weakest link right now. As for the defense… You must know nothing about football. We have argueably the best linebacking corp in the entire country. Espn just ranked that unit best of the SEC and if its the best in the conference it will be hard to find a better one outside the SEC. The defensive line is stacked and our starting secondary is scary. 45-7

bham dawg, I know a fair amount about football, and I’m still not impressed with your defense, regardless of what ESPN might say. They also had your defense ranked 9th best in football last season, but that didn’t take into account the offensive competition. As for your secondary, I still have vivid memories of Alfred Blue sprinting past Boykin and Rambo, while neither of them even tried to bring him down.

If I were you I wouldn’t base my expectations too much on the geniuses at ESPN. Their research consists of little more than reading stats and viewing highlight reels.

I’m not the one showing my ass here fell’a. That would be you making asinine pie in the sky statements. You come on a UGA blog shooting off predictions that are as lame as most of these GT trolls. OBC is still a pricht yet he continues to recruit. He gets the players, don’t think for a minute he doesn’t. FL and TN will be much improved as should be UGA. You barners have nothing in the offing. Maybe, perhaps you have an improved defense but, don’t count on it in BVG 1st year. He’s good, he’s not special. Why do you think he’s made a half dozen moves in the last 7-8 years. It isn’t success

What does he gain out of this stupid argument? It will not change anything…if anything it looks as though he is making excuses for SCU’s impending
failure to win the East because of his schedule.

Hell….if he would just beaten Auburn last year (at home no less) then they win the East. The Dawgs trashed them 45-7 and yet his team lays an egg vs an
inferior team at home.

Plus, if he had been the genius everyone thinks he is then why
didn’t he let his more talented backup QB play instead of Garcia.
His inept decision to hitch his wagon to Garcia and the lack of being
prepared vs Auburn cost him the Division title…not the damn
schedule.

Plus, in ‘08, SOS wasn’t too concerned with UGA’s schedule when the Dawgs played both LSU and Alabama. Today he’s enamored with our
schedule. He can pound sand.

Gentlemen, the “tiger” in my screen name refers to LSU, not Auburn. Our defense was pretty fair last year and I expect it will be again this year. BTW, I have a daughter at UGA, so I have more than a passing interest in your team. I’ve watched UGA almost as much as LSU, and attended more games in Athens (2) last year than in BR (1). Next to LSU, the Dawgs are my favorite team. I just don’t get why the administration at UGA makes the decisions they make. The Dawg should be an elite program annually, and they haven’t been for some time.

GAtiger: Georgia hasn’t “been elite for some time”?

What does that mean?

Lets see the 10 years the following has happened:

Overall Record : 98-34 SEC Record: 55-25
5 SEC East Championships (3 2nd place finishes)
7 NY Day Bowls (3 BCS Games)
2 SEC Championships
6 Top 10 finishes (2 Top 3 Finishes and 4 Top 6 Finishes)
7 Ten Win Seasons
2-2 Record vs Les Miles at LSU including laying 52 points on the Tigers at LSU in 2008

2011 SEC EAST CHAMPIONS….Yeah its been awhile since Georgia did well in the SEC or Nationally.

But don’t let facts get in the way.

News flash UGA fans…everybody knows that the schedule (at least the SEC portion) is set by the SEC office. You don’t have to keep saying that “we can only play the schedule that give us…” However, everybody also knows that the schedule that was handed to you is cake. Spurrier won the Heisman but not the SEC in 1966. You guessed it, because he lost to Georgia (throwing 3 INTs.) It has been eating at him for 46 years. He doesn’t have the team in 2012, so he has to shift the focus. This could backfire, if he finishes in the middle of the pack in the East, fans may suggest, “hey coach, less whining and more coaching!”

“The seventh-ranked 1966 Florida Gators entered the game with a 7–0 record and the opportunity to clinch a share of their first-ever SEC title.[30] The Gators’ senior quarterback, Steve Spurrier, had just locked up the Heisman trophy the previous week with a stellar performance versus the Auburn Tigers.[31] The Florida–Georgia game turned out very differently, however, as the Bulldogs defense dominated the game, and Spurrier threw three interceptions in the 27–10 Georgia victory.[32]“

The tide will be stopped THIS year and they will go downhill from there on out and when Saban finishes his contract(if he does) Bama will be back where they were prior to Saban…..looking up at the rest of us, changing coaches every 2 years and on probation where they belong…

Its 2 divisions Stevie, not 2 conferences….get over it. You play who the SEC schedules you to play and you beat them or you dont. It has always been that way and always will be. A few years ago it was reversed and you did not hear UGA and Richt being little whiny babies did you? its not UGA’s fault Florida, Tenn , Auburn, Ole Miss and Miss St are down right now. It is UGA’s fault that they GAVE you more points last year than your offense scored and GAVE you the game or we would not even be having this conversation….GOOD LUCK WITH THAT THIS YEAR!
