South Carolina: Spurrier would prefer Georgia’s schedule

HOOVER, Ala. – The question was about the perceived advantage of the open date on South Carolina’s schedule before the Gamecocks’ Nov. 10 game against Arkansas. But South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier veered in a different direction with the answer.

“You think I make the schedule?” Spurrier said from the podium at SEC Media Days. “If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.”

The schedule says otherwise, of course — South Carolina at LSU on Oct. 13 and Georgia vs. Ole Miss in Athens on Nov. 3.

Spurrier didn’t make more of the issue, quickly moving on by saying: “Not complaining about that other part I mentioned there.”

But he had made the point, not for the first time, that South Carolina’s cross-division schedule is more imposing than Georgia’s. Last month, at the SEC meetings in Destin, Fla., Spurrier proposed that such schedule inequities be remedied by counting only intra-division games in determining the SEC East and West champions. That proposal went nowhere.

Georgia this season draws SEC West opponents Ole Miss and Auburn (a combined 4-12 in league play last season), while South Carolina draws Arkansas and LSU (a combined 14-2 in the league last season). The Gamecocks have lost to Arkansas each of the past three seasons and five of the past six.

Haha! Spurrier hates UGA. Why? His Heisman trophy season, he lost one game. To guess who? The University of Georgia. Every time I think about that, I smile.

People complain like UGA officials secretly set up the schedule. There has been a constant rotation between east and west team play for decades. Never now when a team rotates back on your schedule if they will be up or down. Don’t recall Richt complaining when UGA drew 2 of the 3 west teams a few Yeats ago. What’s that…they weren’t all as good then? That’s my point! Wasn’t too long ago that the SEC W

Of course this article would have the most responses (8 pages and counting)…it’s because UGA fans are hyper-sensitive when college football fans point out the FACT that UGA has the easiest schedule anyone can remember.

News flash UGA fans…everybody knows that the schedule (at least the SEC portion) is set by the SEC office. You don’t have to keep saying that “we can only play the schedule that give us…” However, everybody also knows that the schedule that was handed to you is cake. You will win a ton of games, and it’s not your fault, be get over it…people are noticing.

Spurrier won the Heisman but not the SEC in 1966. You guessed it, because he lost to Georgia (throwing 3 INTs.) It has been eating at him for 46 years. He doesn’t have the team in 2012, so he has to shift the focus. This could backfire, if he finishes in the middle of the pack in the East, fans may suggest, “hey coach, less whining and more coaching!”

“The seventh-ranked 1966 Florida Gators entered the game with a 7–0 record and the opportunity to clinch a share of their first-ever SEC title.[30] The Gators’ senior quarterback, Steve Spurrier, had just locked up the Heisman trophy the previous week with a stellar performance versus the Auburn Tigers.[31] The Florida–Georgia game turned out very differently, however, as the Bulldogs defense dominated the game, and Spurrier threw three interceptions in the 27–10 Georgia victory.[32]“

spurrier does have one good point here… if a team goes undefeated in their division i believe they should be named the division champs. I can’t see any possible injustice with that rule.

Say soomething about UGA non-conference games this year but not the last several huh Roll tide? I seen a few of bama the last few years….very non-impressive. UGA’s non-conference games over the last 10 years are much more impressives than Bama playing those junior colleges….who did UGA open with last year…..who did Bama open with?

The tide will be stopped THIS year and they will go downhill from there on out and when Saban finishes his contract(if he does) Bama will be back where they were prior to Saban…..looking up at the rest of us, changing coaches every 2 years and on probation where they belong…

Its 2 divisions Stevie, not 2 conferences….get over it. You play who the SEC schedules you to play and you beat them or you dont. It has always been that way and always will be. A few years ago it was reversed and you did not hear UGA and Richt being little whiny babies did you? its not UGA’s fault Florida, Tenn , Auburn, Ole Miss and Miss St are down right now. It is UGA’s fault that they GAVE you more points last year than your offense scored and GAVE you the game or we would not even be having this conversation….GOOD LUCK WITH THAT THIS YEAR!
