South Carolina: Spurrier would prefer Georgia’s schedule

HOOVER, Ala. – The question was about the perceived advantage of the open date on South Carolina’s schedule before the Gamecocks’ Nov. 10 game against Arkansas. But South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier veered in a different direction with the answer.

“You think I make the schedule?” Spurrier said from the podium at SEC Media Days. “If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.”

The schedule says otherwise, of course — South Carolina at LSU on Oct. 13 and Georgia vs. Ole Miss in Athens on Nov. 3.

Spurrier didn’t make more of the issue, quickly moving on by saying: “Not complaining about that other part I mentioned there.”

But he had made the point, not for the first time, that South Carolina’s cross-division schedule is more imposing than Georgia’s. Last month, at the SEC meetings in Destin, Fla., Spurrier proposed that such schedule inequities be remedied by counting only intra-division games in determining the SEC East and West champions. That proposal went nowhere.

Georgia this season draws SEC West opponents Ole Miss and Auburn (a combined 4-12 in league play last season), while South Carolina draws Arkansas and LSU (a combined 14-2 in the league last season). The Gamecocks have lost to Arkansas each of the past three seasons and five of the past six.

Mocking UGA’s schedule this year is idiotic by any standard. The SEC sets the conference schedule. UGA does not.
________________

True enough, but the issue should be the OOC schedule, which UGA DOES set. It continues to be a disgrace and an embarrassment–and to reflect the cowardice of McGarity.

DawgNola, beside the point. WE put our foot in his teams butt last year. They needed some mistakes by us to pull out a lucky win. Sometimes you just have to be lucky.

Are you people really that ignorant or do you really not know that we don’t pick our SEC schedule. The schedule rotates and sometimes that works out well and sometimes it does not. Spurrier can whine all he wants, but he would not be if the rotation was going his way.

Maybe that is why UGA DROPPED the Alabama game for this year?? The doggies didn’t want to play a high caliber team . . . Even pitiful GT could win the SEC-East with UGA’s schedule this year. But UGA is TOO chicken to play Alabama. Roll Tide.

You’re WAY out of your league on this blog. The SEC alone is responsible for conference scheduling, so no, UGA didn’t “drop” Bama. UGA had no say in the matter. Neither did Bama, for that matter.

Educate yourself before you come on here wasting space.

Eddie,
what’s crazy is that little stevie knows this too. He knows that he has benifitted from the same rotation before and never said a word. Now that UGA benifits from an schedule where Fla. & Tn. are not as dominant as they normally are, lil stevie and the whiners want to CRY, CRY, BABY…

worm it proves you are Stupid and talking out of you butt with your comments. Tech has problems with UGa but not the average SEC teams. Saban wanted to move the Tech game until he is probably retired. Tenn will not even play us. Auburn is the only SEC that likes to play Tech every few years.

UGA does luck out this year and miss the big 3 from the west which will clearly help the win loss column. However, I believe most UGA fans were upset when they found out bama was being dropped, I was really looking forward to making that trip.

Don’t anyone, not find it funny as he!!, that not once, when UGA was playing Alabama and LSU and Auburn, you never heard the dawg fans complaining about how hard the schedule was. Where were the turd fans and the techies and the ole crybaby SC coach when UGA was playing those teams? I’ll tell you where they were. They were hiding, keeping their crybaby mouths shut. That’s where they were.

No one on this blog knows what Georgia’s true strength of schedule is until year’s end. This could be the year the three strongest teams in the SEC are in the EAST (UGA, USC, FLA). All three will have great defenses, and that is what it takes to win in this league. If the DAWGS win the EAST, one thing is sure – they will NOT be ducking the best the West has to offer. GO DOGGIES!

The old school way was to keep your mouth shut and then go out and kick your opponents fanny.

SS has decided to let his mouth go and as long as he can back it up(which he has done for 2 years in a row) he can sit up there and look down his nose at UGA. In practical sense he has taken teams with much less talent and beat a UGA team with top 10 talent who did not get it done against top ranked teams. Now this is a new year and SS is just planting some very deep roots into the minds of the SEC schedulers in Birmingham. Will it work? Who knows, but he knows how to coach, and has proven it at three schools.

it’s just the way the scheduling has worked … a few years ago GA was playing the LSUs and BAMAs. It just so happens that LSU and Bama weren’t as good as they are now.

Nothing SS can do about SEC scheduling. It’s the coward McGarity who sets the utterly embarrassing
NC schedule … BUFFALO, FL Atlantic, GA Southern. And I think SS benefited from McGarity when he coached the Gators. Anyone else see the similarities of UGA’s NC schedule compared to when McGarity was at UF?

GA played FOUR teams that were consistently good in 2011 (Boise, SC, LSU, Mich St), and surrendered 35+ to all 4, going 0-4. Auburn & their “little bro” GT were GA’s signature Ws in 2011.

GA will appear to be a very good team in 2012 b/c their schedule is more favorable that 2011 (i.e. NO Boise St) GA fans just better hope the trip to Mizzou isn’t similar to the trip to Colorado a few years ago, and that Ole Miss, UT, Vandy, or UK aren’t improved from 2011 or there might be a couple Ls hidding in those games.

You’re right on the money about McGarity.

One thing you could say about Damon Evans was that he at least tried to include decent OOC games (Okla St, Colo, Ariz St, Oregon, etc.)–and had the guts to schedule them home and home. His idea–and it was a good one–was to “spread the UGA brand” out of the Southeast. Yeah, we lost a couple of those road games, but I’d rather do that than engage in the shameful practice of buying Ws over cupcakes. Of course, the Oregon series was never played; McGarity couldn’t get the Ducks off the schedule fast enough when he got here from fla, where he was a master of the soft OOC schedule (aside from FSU).

UGA OOC scheduling–disgusting, embarrassing, cowardly. The Dawgs are far from the only ones who do it, obviously, but that sure as hell doesn’t make it right.
