South Carolina: Spurrier would prefer Georgia’s schedule

HOOVER, Ala. – The question was about the perceived advantage of the open date on South Carolina’s schedule before the Gamecocks’ Nov. 10 game against Arkansas. But South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier veered in a different direction with the answer.

“You think I make the schedule?” Spurrier said from the podium at SEC Media Days. “If I made the schedule, Georgia would be playing LSU, and we’d be playing Ole Miss.”

The schedule says otherwise, of course — South Carolina at LSU on Oct. 13 and Georgia vs. Ole Miss in Athens on Nov. 3.

Spurrier didn’t make more of the issue, quickly moving on by saying: “Not complaining about that other part I mentioned there.”

But he had made the point, not for the first time, that South Carolina’s cross-division schedule is more imposing than Georgia’s. Last month, at the SEC meetings in Destin, Fla., Spurrier proposed that such schedule inequities be remedied by counting only intra-division games in determining the SEC East and West champions. That proposal went nowhere.

Georgia this season draws SEC West opponents Ole Miss and Auburn (a combined 4-12 in league play last season), while South Carolina draws Arkansas and LSU (a combined 14-2 in the league last season). The Gamecocks have lost to Arkansas each of the past three seasons and five of the past six.

We also just weaseled out of playing Alabama.

That isn’t what happened at all but hey, don’t let the facts get in your way of pretending to be a GT fan.

What do a maggot and an Alabama fan have in common?

They can both live off of a dead bear for 20 years.

The guy has not won the SEC since he left Floriduh. He has become irrelevant except for an occasional dumb comment in the media. I would rather listen to the Missouri coach speak then the Kock coach.

Keep kicking that dead horse. Kinda like the kicking you’ll probably get by LSU that day!

Tech goes 1-2 against those three teams if they play them. At best.

Spurrier putting his foot in UGA’s butt several years in a row has him feeling pretty good it seems?

Might as well go ahead and crown the dawgs as east winners. No need to play the games.

Mocking UGA’s schedule this year is idiotic by any standard. The SEC sets the conference schedule. UGA does not.

Where were all the folks who are whining about UGA’s “easy” schedule in previous years when UGA drew horrific schedules that a consensus of national writers and analysts called among, if not THE, toughest in the nation? Where were they when other teams in the SEC had the “easy” draw on the SEC slate? Spurrier has drawn his share of easy schedules as a coach in the SEC over the years as well. I don’t recall him mocking his own schedule in those years or pointing out how difficult someone else’s schedule was.

If we played our 2nd string we would beat all three by double digits and we aren’t very good.

Fair enough. If twisting things around to try to make GT look good at all times when facts don’t support your argument is your M.O., feel free to go for it. It’s not my cup of tea. I’d rather deal in reality without the spin doctoring and nonsense.

It seems as though most of your audience here is already wise to your routine and pretty much ignore you anyway.. ;-)

The fact that the SEC set it doesn’t really change the fact that it is an incredibly easy schedule.

This should be good. S. Carolina will beat UGA again but lose out on the division because of the harder schedule. UGA fans will get all excited about winning the east then they will get dumped on by LSU or Alabama in the conference championship…AGAIN. UGA will then wind up playing in the Outcast Bowl (pun intended) and lose AGAIN to some Big 10 team and the rest of the SEC will be shaking their heads in shame.

Well – Spurrier does have a point. GA has such a powder-puff schedule that most good teams would be able to win the SEC-East this year. Just like last year – who does UGA really play that is good this year?? You play a very bad UT team, one of the worst UF teams in 20+ years, an OK Auburn team (but nothing like they have been in the last 20+ as well). Other than that – NO ONE.
We saw what happened when your pups played BSU and the SC – got beat. And then the best of all – your puppies LOST to Mich State.
Maybe that is why UGA DROPPED the Alabama game for this year?? The doggies didn’t want to play a high caliber team. And please don’t give me that crap about “we held LSU in the 1st half of the SEC Champ game” – so did Miss State. In fact it was only 6-3 at the half – against lowly Miss State.
Even pitiful GT could win the SEC-East with UGA’s schedule this year. But UGA is TOO chicken to play Alabama. Roll Tide.

Steve Spurrier did not say anything untrue. Heck yes he would like to have UGA’s schedule along with 13 other teams. At the same time he is adding pressure to CMR by stating that UGA’s schedule is by far the easiest in the league. No, UGA did not make their conference schedule, it is not their issue, they are playing what is dealt to them.

Now moving on to the folks who keep bring up UGA’s RECORD against Alabama and LSU. Apparently not winning a BCS title is low on your success indicator list. Winning that final game of the year is much bigger than any win any other time. And LSU and Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee have pulled their weight when it counted.

Most Alabama fans are not calling for BCS titles, most realize that the defense is not going to be the force as they were the past 3 or 4 years, We do feel like we will be in the top 10 to 15 at the end of the year.

Htook advantage of a lot of easy schedules and Florida. If he coaches long enough, the pendulum will swing and Carolina will have an easier schedule than UGA. This is just proof that he is obsessed with what goes on at UGA. He fits in well with all the chicken people…they’re obsessed with UGA too.

RamblinWreck90, if you think GT “weaseled” out of playing Alabama, then you are sorely mistaken. Alabama approached GT on the idea of rescheduling for later and Tech agreed, it was a mutual decision. I’m friends with coach Klein so I’m pretty positive he knows what happened. I don’t even know why you would post this on a UGA blog anyway, but I happened to read it and wanted to make sure you know the facts.
