Football season arrives with annual SEC Media Days gathering

Birmingham — I’m here at SEC Football Media Days with AJC colleagues Jeff Schultz and Tim Tucker. We’ll be providing you online coverage all afternoon. Schultz already has posted one of his infamous “Digi-Blogs.”

The actual event doesn’t get started until 1:30 p.m. EST when Commissioner Mike Slive gives the state of the SEC address — they take this stuff very serious — but the Wynfrey Hotel is already abuzz with activity. According to the SEC, more than 1,100 media professionals have been credentialed for this year’s festivities, which is a record.

Of course, foremost on the agenda this year is the expansion of the league to 14 teams. New members Missouri and Texas A&M will both meet the press today. I wrote a story that you can LINK TO HERE previewing this year’s event and reviewing all the work that has gone into adding these two programs over the last nine months.

One of the highlights of this event is the annual polling of the media, who pick a preseason All-SEC team and predict the order of finish. Don’t go running to Las Vegas to put money on our projected champion.

Since the last expansion in 1992, the media is 4-16 at predicting a champion. We got two in a row right in 1994-95 (Florida) and back-to-back in 2007-08 (LSU, Florida). Otherwise we’ve whiffed, including 11 consecutive misses from 1996-2006.

Following is a list of predictions provided by the SEC. Thanks for keeping track guys:

Year—-Projected Champion—–Eventual champion

1992—–Florida—–Alabama
1993—–Alabama—–Florida
1994—–Florida—–Florida
1995—–Florida—–Florida
1996—–Tennessee—–Florida
1997—–Florida—–Tennessee
1998—–Florida—–Tennessee
1999—–Tennessee—–Alabama
2000—–Alabama—– Florida
2001—–Florida—–LSU
2002—–Tennessee—–Georgia
2003—–Auburn—–LSU
2004—–Georgia—–Auburn
2005—–Tennessee—–Georgia
2006—–Auburn—–Florida
2007—–LSU—–LSU
2008—–Florida—–Florida
2009—–Florida—–Alabama
2010—–Alabama—–Auburn
2011—–Alabama—–LSU

So who do you think we should pick this year?

Remember to check back right here all day as we’ll be providing blogs after each school’s turn at the podium. Today’s agenda in order of appearance is:  Commissioner Slive, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Missouri and Vanderbilt.

To: Wet Willie…….Blackoutanyone…..and all Bama fans……

Since the inception of the SEC Championship game, who has the most SEC titles? Well, let me help you if you can’t figure it out from the list above:

1. Florida – 7
2. LSU – 4
3. Bama – 3
4. Tennessee – 2
5. Auburn – 1
6. Georgia – 1

Hey….if Bama wins the next four SEC titles….your team will be tied with Florida for the most wins in SEC Championship game history. Good luck with that.

Good to know some things don’t change..like the ability of a Gator to count. :)

Long shot, Arky……my heart says UGA but my gut says either Bama or LSU. And they say oversigning don’t pay.

I will have to try and catch Spurrier’s conference. He is always the most entertaining by far. I’m gonna lay odds that he says something about UGA because that’s usually a given. I think he will also say something about scheduling and permanent opponents.

@Counter Point….

Today is the start of SEC Media Days…..everyone talking about winning the SEC title….not the national title. But we all know and accept that Bama dominated back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. No doubt.,

“Hey, if UF wins the next 11 national championships you will be tied with Bama. Good luck with that.”

I’m not sure how many titles Bama really has. Some of those claimed titles came without a trophy and an actual title game played. But with that said, Bama still has more than any other SEC school. Tennessee has 6-7 national championship titles. As for UF, before Spurrier arrived, UF was sort of like Vandy.

The team that has a winning record against all other SEC schools? University of Alabama!

SEC championship this year will be between either Bama/LSU vs or UGA or USC. UGA has an EASY schedule and if they don’t make to the big game then they really do suck. UGA can not compete with Bama or LSU in the west. In fact, Bama, LSU, Arky and Auburn will all be good this year. Auburn’s defense will surprise a lot of folks.

That is true. The only school that is coming close to evening the score against Bama is Auburn. Ever since Bear died, Bama has a losing record against Auburn.

Skitty Friddy…

Sort of like the 6-6 Alabama in 2007? Lots of parallels between that Bama team and the 2011 Florida team. Only 0difference…..Florida did not lose to any lousy teams like LA-Monroe. But both went on to win their bowl games. Bama then went 13-0 the following year before losing to Florida in the 2008 title game. Not saying Florida will be 13-0 this year…..but they are going to be a potentially, very dangerous team for anyone to play…..and who knows what may happen….the reason they have a footblall season. I doubt anyone thought Bama would go 13-0 in 2008…..right?

Yeah…..Those Steve Sprurrier (the ones for which he was the QB), Jack Youngblood, Wilber Marshall, and Emmitt Smith teams really sucked in the 70s and 80s. Very good teams….just didn’t win the SEC title.

Also interesting–since the year 2000 who has won more SEC titles Georgia or Alabama. Answer: Georgia. But none of this stuff really matters anymore. It’s 2012, this season alone counts now. Past glories are just that!

TampaGator. I do agree with you about your Gators this year. I expect they’ll lose several but, they’ll beat some this year too. The SEC East likely will be moving back to solidify their perch atop the SEC. It’s been three years and the tide is beginning to move
