It looked like Richard Samuel's career at tailback was going to take off when he broke off this 80-yard touchdown run against Arkansas in 2009. (AP photo)
Athens – Richard Samuel has a reputation for being the ultimate team player for Georgia, and deservedly so. Since arriving in Athens as a 17-year-old in 2008, he has been asked to change positions — and accepted those requests — three times due to depth issues on one side of the ball or the other.
As the page turns to 2012, Samuel is coming to the rescue again. With the recent dismissal of tailback Isaiah Crowell, Samuel is going to be asked to pick up the slack at that position this fall. Samuel had his mind set on playing fullback this fall, but now he will work “primarily” at tailback, according to offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, especially in the early going.
“I don’t think too much about it,” said Samuel as he signed autographs during Countdown to Kickoff at UGA this past Saturday. “Back in the spring I was preparing for both, tailback and fullback. So now it looks like I’ll be leaning more to tailback, which is fine. But I hope I get some time at fullback. I don’t want it to be like linebacker where I prepared for linebacker but never got to rep at it. So I’m just hoping I get a little mix of fullback in there.”
When Samuel (6-foot-2, 243 pounds) signed with the Bulldogs out of Bartow County’s Cass High in 2008, he came in as a 5-star prospect who could play either running back or linebacker. What position he should play in college was a hotly-debated topic. In order to win his recruiting battle, the Bulldogs said they’d leave it up to him and, as these things tend to turn out, Samuel chose to run the football.
It wasn’t necessarily a bad decision. Samuel played in 11 games as a true freshman backup to All-SEC tailback Knowshon Moreno. He finished with 133 yards on 26 carries (5.1 ypc average) and had 401 yards on kickoff returns.
Samuel took over as the starter in 2009 after Moreno left for the NFL and was impressive early on. He had an 80-yard TD run and finished with 104 yards at Arkansas in Game 3. But he fell behind Caleb King and Washaun Ealey and lost the No. 1 spot by midseason.
The decision was made the next year to switch Samuel to defense and he was redshirted in order to acclimate to the new position. Samuel was sharing reps with Alec Ogletree at “Mo” inside linebacker through spring practice and was looking forward to playing defense in 2011. But before the Bulldogs could get to preseason camp, Ealey was pointed toward the door, King flunked out and Carlton Thomas was suspended for the opening game.
So the coaches turned to Samuel and asked him if he’d be willing to come back to offense to help out. As has been his inclination, Samuel answered the call. He started three games at tailback, played in eight and, for all practical purposes, won the Florida game for the Bulldogs when he rushed for 58 yards and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the 24-20 victory. Unfortunately for Georgia, Samuel injured an ankle on the last play of the Florida game. He had ankle surgery the next week and missed the next five games.
Heading into this year, Georgia seemed set at tailback with the return of Crowell, Ken Malcome and Brandon Harton and the additions of highly-rated signees Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley. The Bulldogs also lost fullback Bruce Figgins to graduation. So Samuel was pretty happy about the coaches’ decision to cross-train him at fullback with the idea of him primarily playing that position this fall.
“I like contact,” Samuel said. “Fullback is close to linebacker to me so I enjoy that as well. I enjoy the contact part of it.”
Then came the Crowell catastrophe and Samuel finds himself back at square one.
“I’ve talked to [running backs coach Bryan] McClendon about it and he says it’ll be interchangeable,” Samuel said. “He said I might be the fullback in the gun or we might have two tailbacks or whatever. It all depends on the plays that are called and the down and distance. We’ll see.”
Samuel was asked if he is ever frustrated by the continued movement.
“I understand the need,” said the fifth-year senior. “There are certain areas where we have needs and right now those are tailback and fullback. If it were a completely different position, that might be overkill. But I enjoy both positions I’ll be playing.”
Bobo, for one, is extremely thankful to have Samuel to turn to.
“Richard’s going to do what’s best for the football team,” Bobo said. “I think if he stays healthy, he can be productive for us. He’s a senior and he knows we’re counting on him.”
As always.

Why I appreciate his dedication, Samuel is not a true TB. I think he will do well at FB but I think his best position would have been at LB. When you go back and watch his highlights from high school, he really stuck to guys at LB.

Richard Samuel is a class act, and the ultimate team player. But, I don’t buy into the crap of being jerked around. He chose RB over LB initially and would have probably remained one of the starters, except for fumbles and lack of cutting ability. He is extremely fast, but I always questioned his ability to be an SEC RB, cause it always seemed to be so easy to trip him up, in addition to him struggling to hold on to the ball. So it made sense to move him to LB, where alot of prople felt like was his better position all along. But, for whatever reasons, he was unable to crack the starting line-up, ultimately redshirting. Then when UGA found itself with no experienced RB’s, thanks to Ealey and Kings departure, Richard was asked if he would consider RB again. I mean you gotta love the fact that he wants to help the team, and also wants to play at whatever position gets him on the field. Then, he finally puts it all together with a monster game against Florida, but severely injures his ankle at the end of the game. Dang, his luck has been second only to Uga. Nothing would make me happier than to see Richard have an awesome year, but I don’t see how you fault UGA with the way all of it has gone, up to this point. I wish the absolute BEST for Richard, and GO DAWGS!

I don’t think Samuels has been jerked around and I think he would agree. He is a power runner so he is slow hitting the holes until he can get a head of steam going , then he has good speed so his ideal running back position would be Fullback which is where he will probably get his chance in the Pro’s. He likes contact which is 70% of what Fullback’s do, block for the tailback. He didn’t play enough Linebacker to see if he is fast enough but if he was better than average in practice at the Linebacker position you can bet Grantham would be fighting for him . He has certainly been a DGD and will be a great candidate to come back one day and coach at Georgia.
I think he has done enough to get a chance at the Pro’s and in the long run that is all he can ask for.

Versatility is good but I’m not a fan of the offense to defense and vice versa. If you recruit the positions adequately you’d have an adequate number of players to evaluate and fill the positions. Malcom Mitchell may very well be capable of moving over to the defensive side this year but there should be enough guys competing in the secondary to avoid moving him.

If Richard gains 575+ yds and scores 6, 7, TDs AND blocks well as a tailback/fullback, he will have done his job. These stats are very decent in the SEC and are realistic. Coupled with another 450-550 yds out of Ken Boo Malcome, UGA will have done well replacing IC. The 2 new N Carolina guys can come in and add another dimension of both size and speed and throw in say, 575-750 total yds., then the UGA overall rushing attack will be excellent.
Look for UGA this year to really utilize the tight ends with Frosh Jay Rome and Artie Lynch. These two guys can play that position and will add yet one more dimension to UGA’s total O putput. This position has been vastly underutilized lately.
If Murray can stay clam in his drop with his up front linemen doing their job, his bone headed, panic throws, fumbles might be greatly reduced.
We shall see.

Marshall , Malcome and Gurley have been Tailbacks most of their lives so Bobo needs to treat them like they know that position and after Summer practice in August play them at the Tailback position and let Samuels play Fullback from the start.
Spurrier played Lattimore at Tailback from the start of his Freshman year and look how that ended up. Bobo needs to stop treating these kids like they are still in Pee Wee ball. Marshall and Gurley can learn the blocking schemes on the fly but don’t wait until the 5TH or 6TH games to move Samuels to Fullback because Fullback is a very demanding position and Ogletree and Quayvon Hicks will need help.

My prediction is that Samuel is running some at tailback to teach Marshall and gurley how to pass protect. By game 4 or 5, Marshall will be rotating with Malcome and Gurley and Samuel will be splitting time at fullback with Quavon Hicks. Hicks is 250 pounds and bench presses a house. Florida will have a stout D this year, but they will struggle on offense. The Qb position is a problem, as is a RB who can run between the tackles. They have had a roster full of jailbreak type WR’s from the spread, but don’t have any experienced disciplined route runners.

75, I hate to pick on your comment becasue it seems like I do that to you too often, not really meaning to. But if Tree and Hick need help, it’ would be at backing up Merrit Hall who is the projected starter right now, and I am certain they can handle that. I would suspect we would see Samuel at FB situationally, but not becasue of need.
As far as Bobo being willing to let a freshman play feature TB, when was he not? We’ve been doing that going on, how many years in a row now?
I personally don’t need to look at Lattimore to see how anything works out. (Aside from him being an execption, not the rule). I can point to THIS team and scoring situations blown up, and games lost, as a result of mistakes by Frosh RBs, so IF we can finally get a bit of experience back there during the crunch time, late in a game, why wouldn’t we? I guarantee you that Spurrier would agree with that in theory, too.

Let us all not forget how quickly “cut down the mistakes” banner gets hung on Murray now, and some of the more memorable ones were not so coincidently on plays that our inexperience in the backfield started that chain of events.

If I may quote ChuckDawg:
“I know a lot of people are worried about Mizzou. Unfortunately, I have had the displeasure of watching more Big 12 football than most of you Bulldogs, including Mizzou. I can absolutely assure you of this, they have never, ever faced a front 7 like UGA has this year. They will be so physically dominated that although it may be a scratchy 3 quarters we should “out physicality” them by the 4th Quarter. They are weak on D against pretty much everything we are good at on O. Sure, their deep ball threat against our bubble gum and string secondary is there, but they got to have a QB that can get off a pass. Their only hope would be the 5-10 yard quick passes, but I believe ole Grantham is going to be much more ready for that than against BSU. And MIzzou’s surgical passing is now where near BSU’s last year. It’s hard to want to throw and catch when you’re scared to heck of being pulverized. And we can hit them very, very hard.”

First off Samuel you are a DGD!!! What you did in the Fla game last year will forever keep you in the hearts of UGA fans. Stay at fullback and some team will get a steal with you in the draft next year. Second Richt get a real running backs coach, H Ward anyone?? Someone who can teach these young men better balance and running vision (sadly to say mr samuels problem). And he has NFL exp which would be great in recruiting. Third and most importantly RICHT GET YOUR FIRE BACK!!!! We need the man who came to us in 01′ with something to prove. Get back in the offensive game planning more, thats where YOU shine! If you have to get back up in the box during games and get the overhead view, DO IT and let Granham and Bumo run the sideline. Back at Fla St you would have treated Murray more like C Ward and had more shotgun and BOOTLEGS to use Qbs abilities better and make up for qbs heigths. Bowden said when you were hired you didnt have heart to make the hard choices. Its time to prove them all wrong, the cancers are gone, bring this teams together and make your mark.

Samuel is a DGD, but he isnt our best option at tailback. I knew this would happen too. He will get rewarded for being a 5th year senior and get the number 1 spot on the depth chart. He’s the problem, if he was that good he would have never been changed from that position after Knowshon left. He is a between the tackles guy but other defenses have shown that they have no problem stopping him. I say we start Malcome with Marshall and Gurley getting allot of carries, early with the cream puffs. If we dont, we’re going to stuggle allot this season. Bobo and Richt are pass happy and wont change their mentality. If this holds true we’re looking at a 9-3 season versus a possible 11-1 season.

I agree Flat Tire. The Richard Samuel experiment has already played out. No doubt he single handidly saved the Florida game for us last year, but that was a one off. He’s a talneted player that never found his niche. He would have been a great LB but look at all the talent we’ve had come through here in recent years. They cant play him there. I thought FB was a good choice. He knows the playbook and isnt afraid of contact.
We need to get Malcome,Marshall, and Gurley up to speed as quickly as possible so that they hit their stride and have some confidence getting into the meat of the season. This decision tells allot about our offensive strategy going into this year. Basically, they are going to put it on Murray’s arm to get the job done. Its a mistake and a flawed game plan. Put your playmakers on the field and lets GATA dammit!

First Samuel, next M.M. How many more players will this inept coaching staff have to move around from offense to defense to cover up for their lack of recruiting ability and their lack of roster management.Richt and his pitiful coaching staff have no clue of how to recruit for need. All they know is to take whatever players are left in state that settle on playing for UGA. It’s a shame that for 11 years now, UGA has no O.L. depth and no dominate players on the O.L. It’s also a shame that UGA has no depth at all in the Defensive Backfield, W.R., running back, D.L. Q.B. C.B. Yet the top players at all of these positions are all leaving and headed out of state to play for UGA’s rivals for next year. Anybody that thinks Richt knows what the hell he is doing is crazy. This guy can’t ever sign 25 players in a class. He has no clue on how to manage a roster, UGA has only 69 players on scholarship for the upcoming season, and fall practice hasn’t even started yet. Richt should be fired for this lack of management of his roster, not to mention that he should have been fired for his team’s pitiful play the past 5 years on the field. This guy gets a free pass because he is a good guy. Have a saying that all UGA fans should have learned by now, “Good Guys always finish last”. IF not this year, maybe you cool-aid drinkers should look at next year and the team’s depth. UGA will continue to be the laughing stock of college football this season and especially next year, after the entire defense is gone, and there is no one in this upcoming class to help replace them. All of these 4 and 5 star players have committed to play at Auburn, Bama, S.C. and Fl. Richt and McGarity=NIGHTMARE in Athens!!!

Stick to banking and let CMR do his job. When the trolls start agreeing with you, then you lose credibility. I can see Hicks (@270 lbs.) opening holes big enough for the Mack Truck to roll through. Richard has plenty of speed and when he’s rolling, he’s a load. He will end up splitting time at fullback/tailback by S.C. game. By then, the freshmen may be able to contribute at an SEC level. Kingdaddy – Your right. I dont have allot of faith in the coaching decisions on the offensive side of the ball. Too often we have lost games because of poor preperation, poor game planning, and the lack of ability to make adjustements. I hope your right about Samuel. I know he’s a load but hasnt proven that he can get to the next level out of the back field. To answer your question about putting it on freshmen…yes. Crowell was a true freshman last year and was SEC rookie of the year. I think we have better talent in Marshall and Gurley. I honestly do. We start frehsmen receivers all the time, why not TB? the reason that most would give is that they are not ready to pass block. Well, Marshall has been enrolled since the spring and should eb up to speed. To be honest, I think we see a healthy dose of all these guys. I just dont think Samuel is the guy to set the pace. For me, I like what I saw in BOO last year. He was moving the chains on LSU even when the game was in hand. The kids plays with heart and doesnt go down easy (unlike Samuel). I hate that Richard was bounced around and it probably messed up his career at UGA but, it was his choice. At the time I thought he was probably going to be a top LB. The mistake the coaching staff made was letting the recruit decide what he was going to play, just to get him, instead of telling him where he should play because of his talent. Samuel would have probably been a 1st round pick LB if he would have came to UGA and dedicated himself to that position. He messed HIMSELF up. Bama AND UGA are messing Derrick Henry up doing the same thing. At 6′3 , 240 Henry will not be a long term RB in the SEC he’s going to be too big. His So. year he’ll probably 270 lbs. DE size.

Yes Joey, I believe we are going considerable better on the front 7 this year, than this time last year. We were very thin at LB that day. Not now. And that was Jenkins first game in big ball. I think he’s got a handle on it now. We were actually pretty “new” at several spots going into BSU. plus it’ll be game 2.
I also look for our offense to come out of the gate FAR more effective than that BSU game. That was the first game after the offseason retool to a faster style, (that you advocated, and I resisted).

Well? would they have been told repeatedly they WILL get tested and seen for thier very own eyes classmates getting tested, and know they would end up on the front page of the newspaper if they do get tested and fail, before they left for spring break?
My guess is that its upper 90 percentile pass rate. same as it was for the football players.

Why all the acclaim? He had a long run against Arkansas and played very well last year in the second half against Fla. That’s it. He was on fire against Fla. He would not be stopped. Now we all know what he has been capable of doing, all along. In his career at Georgia, he’s played less than one whole game with that intensity.

This is what bothers me about Richt and Bobo, Richard Samuel is not a tailback, He is more of a fullback or LB, He does not have the speed or the cutting ability to play tailback, Let the new guys have the ball and see what they can do, And for god’s sake stop moving Samuel around let him play fullback.

@Duronimo
What makes him special is that he has filled-in multiple times when UGa needed his help. He never complains and just wants to help in anyway possible. He is the best example I have ever seen of the perfect team player….and he has great grades to boot. You are correct on your comments, but you are totally incorrect with your last sentence. He has played every play with extreme intensity… Not “less than one full game”. I sincerely believe he will have an incredible year this season and possibly get drafted.

Samuel was actually 16 when he enrolled at UGA. If he is a bust it is because the coaches moved him around do much so they could use the real busts…the ones that are gone…to run the ball….He is still at UGA…that says a lot. When he and Thomas were in the backfield Bobo ran Thomas up the middle and Samuel out wide so much the defense smelled the play. Our linemen were not able to get outside in front of the play. So if anyone was a bust with Samuel it was the coaching staff for not redshirting him the first year when they did not actually need him to run the ball. Hopefully if he wants to play for the NFL tha he has a good year. I will repeat he is still there.

I will add I think that all of Samuel’s best plays have been run inside the tackle. Certainly not wide. It blows my mind that the staff did not see that asset.

I’ve heard this “thomas up the middle” complaint a few times in here, and I never understand it. ALL his yards were between tackles (highest average on the team) and he got absolutely flung to the ground for a loss every time we ran him outside. The idea was an attempt to slip him past the big Dlinemen on a draw play.
I understand the complaint about him being our better option whatsoever last year, but running him outside was futile and we got about as much out of him as there was to get.

Hopefully this will work out for the kid showing versatility in the NFL. Unfortunately, we still have Booboo running the offense so I don’t expect much of anything from our Offense.

All you idiots that say that they jerked him around. It’s not that they’re trying to jerk him around. When injuries occur, & nobody can predict that, & they also can’t control which positions the team will suffer those, then they did what was best for the team. The same thing happened w/ Hines Ward. He started out as a WR, moved to RB, & then QB. It’s not that they didn’t know how to evaluate talent, but it was bc they played him where they needed him. It’s a team game, & injuries happen. They key is to get your best players on the field…ideally at their best position, but sometimes we have to go with plan b.

Samual should again return kickoffs he runs hard however with high pad level. As a 5th year senior he should be able to protect the ball. I never played d1 ball only high school but I can tell you that nobody wants to tackle 245 lbs with his downfield speed

I just absolutly love getting all these top flight linebackers, but I’m about ready to turn on the computer and read a story about Georgia getting two 5* pledges that play offensive TACKLE……………….You know, those great big “ol boys what plays on the line, protects the QB, opens big-ass holes for the RBs…………and generally wears down the other guys defense?………………….Yup, I love the LBs……………But needs me some big ‘ol linemen…………………..RED

[...] Since Isaiah Crowell’s dismissal, all eyes have turned to the leadership of Richard Samuel. He originally came to UGA as a RB, then he moved to LB and last year he moved back to RB. He had his mind set on playing FB this fall, but he will transition over to being the No. 1 running back. “I don’t think too much about it,” said Samuel. “Back in the spring I was preparing for both, tailback and fullback. So now it looks like I’ll be leaning more to tailback, which is fine. But I hope I get some time at fullback. I don’t want it to be like linebacker where I prepared for linebacker but never got to rep at it. So I’m just hoping I get a little mix of fullback in there.” [AJC] [...]

He could play for a decade at RB, and it still would not make a difference. He is not a RB. Maybe he would have had a shot at Pro football if he had played LB in college. He simply does not have the skills to play RB.

How sad is it that UGA haters have to come on a UGA blog written about a fine young man and DGD like Richard Samuel? Samuel has character and class, something you haters would know nothing about. I especially love how some of you want to tell Samuel how he should feel! Since you have so much wisdom about why he should and shouldn’t have done, why don’t you show up in Athens and tell him? I promise you that you don’t want to have a private conversation with Richard Samuel about how he feels about UGA!

There was NO SIGNIFICANT evidence that he would go completely batsh_ _ crazy once he got into college!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where do you get your athletic knowledge/expertise of/on what helps and what hurts an NFL prospect???
Edgar Chandler was and All-American oL at UGA but became a Pro-Bowl LB at the Buffalo Bills and there have been hundreds/thousands of College offensive players that changed positions and became successful in the NFL!!!!!!!
At 6′ – 2″ , 245 lbs and 4.5 speed in the 40 I’m quite certain he will be drafted!!!!!!!!!!

You guys who think you know what position Samuel is best suited for are idiots. He’s a DGD without a doubt, but, in reality, he’s just a very good athlete who isn’t much of a football player. He “loves contact” yet, as somebody else put it, he trips over blades of glass. He’s had one good series in his UGA career – about 4 carries vs. Florida last year. Other than that he’s been a bust. He may enjoy contact but he sure does yield to it. Absolutely no reason to believe he’d be any better a LB. Can’t see him shedding blocks any easier than he sheds tackles. Obviously the staff felt the same way. He’d have seen the field if defense was his forte.
