New title comes along with raise, contract extension for D-coordinator Todd Grantham

Athens – That Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham received a new three-year contract and $75,000-a-year raise this year has been well-documented. What hasn’t been, however, is that he also received a title change as well.

In addition to defensive coordinator, Grantham now is also the Bulldogs’ associate head coach. Georgia didn’t make an announcement or anything to that effect.  The title simply appears below his name and above Grantham’s bio on page 22 of the recently-released 2012 media guide.

Grantham was asked on Friday what the new role would entail for him. It doesn’t sound like much if anything will change. Here’s his convoluted answer:

“As far as the new title — and the salary, too, for that matter — obviously I’m appreciative of President Adams, Mr. McGarity and Coach Richt for allowing me to continue to be a part of this program and continue to move it forward to where we feel like we can go. There’s a lot of tradition here at the University of Georgia, which is one of the reasons I wanted to come here. And I feel like we’ve really just scratched the surface on what we can do. We just have to understand the things that got us here last year and continue to work hard to improve, because there are still things we can continue to improve upon and make the program better as well as make this season a good season.”

Grantham was asked if it would mean more responsibilities for him.

“Do more?,” he asked rhetorically. “As far as that goes, from a defensive perspective, I pretty much handle everything that needs to be handled from a defensive perspective. So, obviously if there are things in recruiting or things like that, they obviously will go through the head coach. But from a defensive perspective I’m pretty much going to handle the areas that you would think a defensive coordinator would handle.”

All of which is to say, Grantham’s day-to-day won’t change. However, his new contract does mandate a few more public appearances and the like. As of this past week, Grantham still hasn’t signed the new 29-page contract, which guarantees him $825,000 for the next three seasons. But Grantham’s comments indicate the deal is done in his mind.

“In any profession, the ability to have some stability for your family is critical because it allows you to really focus on the task at hand,” Grantham said, “and that’s getting our program where we want it to go. We had a good year last year, but I think there are obviously things left undone and it allows you to continue to work and focus in on that task. So I think that’s critical.”

Grantham and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo each had 30-minute interview sessions with beat reporters on Friday. Bobo talked about backfield adjustments being made in the wake of tailback Isaiah Crowell’s dismissal and other challenges facing the offense this fall. The coaches all returned from vacations this past week and are in the planning stages of preseason camp, which begins July 31.

Meanwhile, the annual “Countdown to Kickoff” event hosted by former Bulldogs David Greene, Jon Stinchcomb and Matt Stinchcomb, gets underway at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Woodruff Practice Fields. I profiled Jon Stinchcomb a couple of weeks ago. Information on the event can be found at ugakickoff.com.

When you get near the top in defense, there is not a lot of room to go up any further. Yet, Grantham will be at the top with his defense this year. Then he will have to work on staying there. He knows what he is doing and wants his players to be smart and aggressive. I just hope he plans to stay at Georgia many more years. There will be a lot of ADs calling and offering him head coaching positions. Let’s hope none of them are appealing to Grantham. Go Dawgs!

BTW, I wouldn’t include LSU on any list of great offenses UGA faced last year. By the end of the season, weren’t “run first”, but “run only”. Miles grew less trustful of his passing game as the year progressed, and for good reason. Even Grantham figured out that we weren’t a passing threat. Our offense didn’t beat you, our defense and special teams did.

Very true, GATiger. It was a good game until the Dawgs decided to pack up at halftime. LSU just had weapons for which Georgia had no answer, especially on special teams. What’s your prediction for the Tigers this season? Back to the Dome?

@ Yeah that “great…..

The defense did not cost UGA a single game. The offense cost us the USCe game as it did the MSU game. Boise was a better team at the point we played them and our D held LSU to ZERO 1st downs in the first half but we didn’t have enough depth to hold LSU down. Our O and Special Teams cost us the chance to play LSU close in the 2nd half. The 2 dropped SURE TDs .in the 1st half could easily have had UGA at 24 – 0 instead of 10 – 0 and would have definitely been much harder for LSU to overcome!!!!!!!!!!

We had NO RUNNING GAME all year except early on with IC before he started taking himself out of the game, getting injured, turning his back on CMR when CMR was trying to discuss some of ICs foul ups, getting suspended for various infractions and whatever else you may want to throw in. This forced everything onto AMs shoulders to win the game with his passing/scrambling etc. IC could have made a huge difference this coming season but I believe/hope our incoming freshmen RBs can contribute significantly as game breakers and we are not doomed if we have to rely on Malcom and Samuels. MM can go both ways and he asked CMR to let him go both so with IC gone I expect that to contribute greatly to get us where we want to be..

You know less about more than anybody on here!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Math douche: Forty-four out of 111 members of the University of Georgia Football team were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the spring of 2012. Student-athletes earn these honors for finishing the semester with a grade point average of 3.00 or better.

3.50-3.99 GPA: Faton Bauta (W. Palm Beach, Fla.), Scott Eichler (Oakwood, Ga.), Ty Frix (Calhoun, Ga.), Wright Gazaway (Buford, Ga.), Ricky Lowe (Duluth, Ga.), Keith Marshall (Raleigh, N.C.), Hutson Mason (Marietta, Ga.), Aaron Murray (Tampa, Fla.), Lucas Redd (Jefferson, Ga.), Ben Reynolds (Bainbridge, Ga.), Dustin Royston (Royston, Ga.), Kosta Vavlas (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) and Wes Van Dyk (Highland Park, Tex.).

3.00-3.49 GPA: David Andrews (Johns Creek, Ga.), John Bodin (Covington, Ga.), Brandon Bogotay (San Diego, Cal.), Chris Burnette (LaGrange, Ga.), Corey Campbell (Hephzibah, Ga.), Chris Conley (Dallas, Ga.), Watts Dantzler (Dalton, Ga.), Zach DeBell (Tarpon Springs, Fla.), Caleb Drake (Hogansville, Ga.), Michael Erdman (Merritt Island, Fla.), Adam Erickson (Athens, Ga.), Cody Johnson (Marietta, Ga.), Greg Lanier (Clarkesville, Ga.), Jamie Lindley (Savannah, Ga.), Arthur Lynch (Dartmouth, Mass.), Rhett McGowan (Calhoun, Ga.), Greg Mulkey (Fairmount, Ga.), Geoff Rapp (Kennesaw, Ga.) Blake Sailors (Athens, Ga.), Garrison Smith (Atlanta, Ga.), Mike Thornton (Stone Mountain, Ga.), Xzavier Ward (Moultrie, Ga.), Hugh Williams (Atlanta, Ga.), and Chris Young (Hinesville, Ga.).

The 111 student-athletes that are a part of the football team earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.80 for the spring semester of 2012.

Ill take that. If these kids want to be Doctors after college that’s fine with me. If they want to come and get a degree in anything else, I’ll take that too. If they want to come here and play football for 3 years and try it in the NFL, fine with me.

I just don’t understand the anointing of Grantham, yet. The Dawgs only played 4 decent teams last year, and they lost to all of them. In those games, Grantham’s “great” defense gave up 35, 45, 42 and 33 points! Bobo and his “inept” offensive play calling scored 21, 42, 10 and 30 in those losses. A good defense would’ve won 2 or 3 of those games. So, which one is the great coordinator?

85 players get free room and board and free education every year. The total cost of one player being on Scholarship per year is probably $50,000 when you add all the benefits each get.
Where are you getting that players don’t get anything. A free education, since that is the MAIN reason the players are there in the first place is an amazing thing. Approx. 10% of all players will get a chance at the Pro level so I hope they are all there for the right reason since 90% of all players are playing football in exchange for that free education. I wish UGA would have paid for the 4 years that my son was in Athens. Hope only paid about half of the total cost.

Um, Bama LOST the first time they played. Bama has more depth than us on defense. Bama watched the tape on us shutting down LSU for a entire half without giving up a first down. They used the same gameplan we run only kept it up the entire game. TG’s defense showed the world how to stop LSU. Our offense had to many 3 and outs which led the DEF to get gased. ILLogical, you are truely an idiot. Ask your, “New Sheriff in Town” (PJ) how Grantham has done vs his ingenius offense. And Grantham’s D only gave up about half of the points in our losses last year. Special teams and a QB who fumbled and pick-6 ed us to death (Murray) provided the rest.

You should stick to something you know about – maybe post some comments on the “Knitting and Needlepoint” blogs. I bet the old gals would love your kind over there . . .

It has become glaringly obvious that on one side of the ball we have a great coach who is paid according to what the market bears and to try and keep him here. It is also obvious that he is making double what the offensive side of the balls coordinator is making. If we can have a great coach on defense why can’t we expect the same for the offense. This program makes way too much money and charges way to much for tickets (especially the glorified scrimmages) that we should expect more. Richt is shortchanging this offense (like he did with the defense for all the Willie years) and it has hurt us for years.

I don’t normally defend CMB but he hung 42 on a very good S.C. Defense last year. I exoect UGAs offense to be very potent this year. Don’t know why so many non-UGA fans seem to be so concerned about our offense and defense this year? If you’re so scared of UGA FOOTBALL, maybe you should take up another hobby…

Another indication of priorities at UGA. Apparently character doesn’t count. Give the choke sign and curse opposing student athletes, get into a shoving, shouting match with opposing student athletes and coaches and get made Associate Head Coach. And UGA wonders why they have the problems they do!

Grantham will never be the Head Coach at UGA. He’s not polished enough based on the last 2 successful coach’s ( Dooley & Richt). The face of the program is important to UGA, and you can say all you want about Dooley and Richt, but representing the program and the University to the world was and is a 10. I would bet you money that big time Tech folks privately cringe at Johnson.

kingdaddy, if he’s such a great coach, why is NO other school trying to hire him and why is Grantham paid twice as much when he’s been here half as long? Because he’s not the best qualified OC in the country and that is what Georgia should have. And by the way its not all Bobo’s fault, Richt is also to blame. That same team you say scored well against SC, they scored 10 against LSU 19 against KY and 20 against TN.

Grantham in his 3rd year has significantly elevated the defensive talent. UGA could have 8-10 players drafted depending on who leaves early. Last year’s defense wasn’t a finished product but this years should be Top 5. Mike Bobo has had 2 great QBs in Stafford and Murray but the running game is a disaster whether its picking the wrong recruits, poor scheme and as OC he is also responsible for the offensive line and its development and that has been mediocre at best. He is responsible for it all. Don’t give me BS or opinions, we are all hacks, but the fact is, if he was the best coach in the country then he should be paid that way and other teams would be coming after him. He is a great recruiter and shouldn’t be let go, but you are kidding yourself if you think we are getting out of this offense what we should.

Our D was on the field way too much with no running game to speak of last year. Give the D a break and decent field position and we will be awesome! CTG for future head coach! I want a HC with FIRE and Brimstone spewing from him. NOT a Vandy crybaby HC…Class means sticiking up for your players! CTG is the man!

You want a HC with fire and brimstone. How about one that has had prior experience and success as a HC? Do you think UGA should be a place where coordinators learn to become HCs, or where position coaches learn to become coordinators, or, for that matter, where asst. ADs learn to become ADs? Is that where Georgia is as a program? Because that’s what’s been happening for the past 10 years.

UGA fans love their team. We look forward to the fun, the excitement, the pagentry and the overall fun of it all. Been doing this since 1959, then with my GT alum grandfather. Yep ………….since 1959.

If we do not win the SEC East and have a shot at the SEC title, then things might change at the head coach level and the entire O side of the ball. Most UGA fans feel that we DO have that better than 50-50% shot at the SEC East Championship AND the resulting SEC CG. That is really all that UGA fans can plan on this season. How fabulous is that??? Easy schedule? I care less, as injuries even it all out anyway for most good teams. You play your schedule and let the chips fall where they may in this world.

Usually for UGA? Over the last many years mostly, UGA alumni and fans have not enjoyed this optimism but this year we can. RICHT NEEDS to bring back the enthusiasm among the players, develop their thirsts to win big and get them focused on each game.
Our D needs to dominate!!! They need to cause TURNOVERS that lead to TDs!!

Go Dogs.

I’d support CTG for a move to the HC position Coach Richt is just too damn nice and like they say nice don’t cut it in the SEC.

Why you think Tennessee has the problems it got now I know Dooley is the coach, but he rubs off as TOO NICE!

I find Grantham’s comments ““In any profession, the ability to have some stability for your family is critical because it allows you to really focus on the task at hand,” very laughable. Heck – you mean to tell me he (and his family) felt “unstable” from the salary he was making???
I make less than $70K a year and Grantham thinks his family was “unstable” and he couldn’t “really focus” on his job while making 10x that???? (And yes – I DO NOT have a contract – the company can let me go at will or anytime). This is what is part of the problem with sports today – too much greed and money.

He will be a head coach somewhere in 1-3 years max. Hopefully at UGA and sooner than later. Let Richt be PR guy while Grantham gets after it and coaches some Georgia football. He is absolutely right. Georgia has not scratched the surface of the potential of where they could and should be with the abundance of talent that we have year after year.
Give someone like a Saban the same talent base that Georgia has and we would win National Championships also. Coach Grantham also has those same characteristics and will not settle for mediocracy. However, just like when Saban went to Bama, he cleaned house with the ones who were not getting it done and brought in his own championship calibur staff. Unless UGA gets serious about winning and competing with the big dogs then it will continue to have 9-3 and 8-4 seasons. Georgia barely won the SEC last year and probably would have lost to Florida again last year against 1st season head coach Wil Muschamp had Brantley not been gimpy. With a schedule like we have this year, anything less than going undefeated will be sub par. Its going to take a guy like Grantham who has a no nonsense attitude and a play to win mentality to clean house, bring in his own guys and start doing things the right way. If UGA does not see this also, I am afraid he will be a head coach somewhere else in a year. He will be the next $3-5 million dollar man. He’s worth alot more than $850K. Go Dawgs and go coach Grantham, you the man!

The title change didn’t come with much fanfare because of the lack of success(up to this point anyway)for Texas, West Virginia, and Florida State. Let’s face it, associate head coach = coach in waiting and right now no AD in their right mind would utter that phrase right now, but it is what it is
