UPDATE III: Georgia TB Isaiah Crowell dismissed after weapons arrest

UPDATED: CROWELL DISMISSED FROM TEAM
ATHENS – Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team following his arrest early Friday morning on three weapons charges.
Georgia coach Mark Richt made the announcement in short news release sent out by UGA Sports Communications at 5 p.m. on Friday.
“We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season,” Richt said. “Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort.”
Crowell, a sophomore from Columbus, was booked at 3:37 a.m. on charges of possessing a concealed weapon, having a weapon in a school zone and having an altered ID mark on that weapon. His bond, originally set at $7,500, was raised to $9,500 late Friday morning. According to booking records, Crowell was released early Friday afternoon.
According to the police report, four other Georgia football players were also in Crowell’s vehicle, including three 2012 freshman signees. Those persons were outside linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons, wide receiver Blake Tibbs and defensive back Sheldon Dawson. Also present was sophomore defensive back Quintavius Harrow. None of the four were charged.
According to Athens-Clarke police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow, Crowell was arrested at a “vehicle check-point” — or road block — on East Campus Road at Green Street at 2:20 a.m. Friday. Officer Kathryn Thornton reported smelling the odor of marijuana in Crowell’s silver four-door 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. Crowell gave consent to search the vehicle, himself and four other occupants. No marijuana was discovered but a black 9-mm Luger handgun with an altered serial number was found under the driver’s seat. Crowell was immediately arrested and taken to jail.
According to the police report, Crowell denied knowing the gun was in the car and said people drive the vehicle. He. The owner of the vehicle is listed as Crowell’s mother Debbie. The report also indicted that the five were coming from the nightclub Aftermath, where Crowell said the smell of marijuana originated.
The police report also indicated that Crowell has no criminal history.
Crowell’s mother, Debbie, was clearly distressed when reached by telephone Friday. “I don’t want to talk to a reporter right now,” she said. “”If I want to talk to anybody it’s God.”
Crowell, who came to UGA in 2011 as the No. 1-rated running back prospect in America, was slated to start for the Bulldogs at tailback this season. He rushed for 850 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman despite missing playing time due to suspensions and injuries. He was benched for the first quarter of the Vanderbilt game on Oct. 15 as a punishment for an undisclosed disciplinary infraction and he was suspended for the Nov. 5 New Mexico State game, reportedly for failing a drug test.
With Crowell out of the fold, Georgia will turn to redshirt sophomore Ken Malcome and senior Richard Samuel to carry the load early on, along with junior Brandon Harton. The Bulldogs also signed Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. — the top running back prospect in the country, according to 247Sports.com — and four-star prospect Todd Gurley of Tarboro, N.C., to play running back. Marshall enrolled in January.
Marshall and other running backs were offering support for Crowell via Twitter.
“Pray for Isaiah & that he will learn from his mistake,” wrote Marshall from @Truthh4.
Derrick Henry, a highly-touted running back prospect from Florida who once was committed to Georgia, also weighed in via his Twitter account, @KingHenry_2: “Pray for Crowell instead [of] bashing him . . . because everyone wasn’t raised the same. . . . So everyone should just pray he sees a better way”

I think car checks near clubs where alcohol and drugs are regularly used….which obviously defines the club Crowell and friends went to….are designed to regulate the ability to drive a car safely in Athens…..and not to regulate black people. The second option is against all known laws concerning civil rights in America….and protected from it by the U.S. Constitution….these days. This is not 1950.

No, people can’t wait–and shouldn’t. HE HAS A HISTORY. He smelled of marijuana because he’d been at “the club” at 2 a.m. A gun with altered serial number was in the car he was driving. His mother is the registered owner of the car.

And kingdaddy, you obviously didnt get what I was stating. Athens is a good ol boy network just like Carrollton was when I wnet ot school there back in the late 90’s.
I stated if you have a child that may have character issues, do not send them to Athens it is too much of a risk. Black or white, but I can speak on this matter as I choose at risk African American young men need to be in areas that will help them not harm them.
I love UGA football but it is not the area for immature young black kids from the inner city….bottom line, and no kid that I work with will ever be encouraged to go there to play any sport.

I have touched Crand Canyon rocks that have been carbon dated to be 3.5 million years old. Some are even older. People lived in the Grand Canyon thousands of years before Jesus Christ ever walked and talked on this earth. And people…or what we will become over time….will still be walking the earth….hopefully…..millions of years after you and I have returned to dust and the earth….to which we belong. But….if it makes you happier to go through life believing in Jesus coming back to save your soul from enternal damnation…..feel free to do so. You live in America. You have that right….but….as a bumper sticker I saw once said…..”Too bad ignorance does not hurt.” If it did, Mr. Crowell would have been at a medical clinic last night instead of a night club getting into trouble.

no tampa gator…you do not understand the point…in GA a serial number on a gun cannot be traced back to the person who bought it! A background check when you buy the gun has nothing to do with the gun itself…it has to do with determining if you are a convicted felon.

Probably true. But when a coach continues to recruit kids with these types of backgrounds, he bears some responsibility for stepping up and providing the parenting that the prize recruit(s) haven’t had.

I wrote this on this blog in January 2011 when Ealey was in trouble. I Crowell is Richt’s creation.
“It is interesting to read about Ealey because of the parallel to Crowell. Both were highly regarded coming out of high school. Ealey behaved badly in the playoffs, spitting on an opponent. Crowell behaved badly on the sidelines during the playoffs. Ealey went on to lose that game, the finals of “A” class. Crowell went on to lose that game as well, the semi-finals of the “AA” class. Ealey got to UGA and behaved badly because he had a feeling of entitlement and thought the rules did not apply to him. How do you create this mentality? By doing things like making upper classmen line up in formation leaving a spot open for a high school recruit. How do you think those upper classmen felt, especially the running backs. Every team I’ve played on or heard of the freshmen were treated as scum of the earth until they proved otherwise on the field. Crowell will go to UGA thinking he is annointed the team savior and will behave accordingly. That’s how you create a prima donna. Ealey is Richt’s creation.”

Carbon Dating is not fully accurate…..but I think it is very capable of determining if a rock is between 3 and 4 million years old. And the rock I touched down in the canyon and have a photo in my home…..is well over 3 million years old (estimated to be 3.5 million years old…..no question about that time range. The dog pound will suspend him for a couple games against some small school. You can bet your last penny he will be back in time for the tougher teams. This is a repeat prformance year after year. He should be seen in the Federal pen picking up cigarette butts out of the urinals along with some of the other big names in sports. Trash equals trash regardless what team they are on. From the updates it sounds like he just needs to be quiet, they don’t have much on him that can really stick.
It doesn’t sound like he was afraid to be searched, so it’s quite possible he had no idea the gun was in the car or it’s origin. (It would be easy to tell if he’s ever handled it or not) and they found no marijuana.
He needs a good lawyer.
