UPDATE III: Georgia TB Isaiah Crowell dismissed after weapons arrest

UPDATED: CROWELL DISMISSED FROM TEAM
ATHENS – Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team following his arrest early Friday morning on three weapons charges.
Georgia coach Mark Richt made the announcement in short news release sent out by UGA Sports Communications at 5 p.m. on Friday.
“We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season,” Richt said. “Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort.”
Crowell, a sophomore from Columbus, was booked at 3:37 a.m. on charges of possessing a concealed weapon, having a weapon in a school zone and having an altered ID mark on that weapon. His bond, originally set at $7,500, was raised to $9,500 late Friday morning. According to booking records, Crowell was released early Friday afternoon.
According to the police report, four other Georgia football players were also in Crowell’s vehicle, including three 2012 freshman signees. Those persons were outside linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons, wide receiver Blake Tibbs and defensive back Sheldon Dawson. Also present was sophomore defensive back Quintavius Harrow. None of the four were charged.
According to Athens-Clarke police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow, Crowell was arrested at a “vehicle check-point” — or road block — on East Campus Road at Green Street at 2:20 a.m. Friday. Officer Kathryn Thornton reported smelling the odor of marijuana in Crowell’s silver four-door 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. Crowell gave consent to search the vehicle, himself and four other occupants. No marijuana was discovered but a black 9-mm Luger handgun with an altered serial number was found under the driver’s seat. Crowell was immediately arrested and taken to jail.
According to the police report, Crowell denied knowing the gun was in the car and said people drive the vehicle. He. The owner of the vehicle is listed as Crowell’s mother Debbie. The report also indicted that the five were coming from the nightclub Aftermath, where Crowell said the smell of marijuana originated.
The police report also indicated that Crowell has no criminal history.
Crowell’s mother, Debbie, was clearly distressed when reached by telephone Friday. “I don’t want to talk to a reporter right now,” she said. “”If I want to talk to anybody it’s God.”
Crowell, who came to UGA in 2011 as the No. 1-rated running back prospect in America, was slated to start for the Bulldogs at tailback this season. He rushed for 850 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman despite missing playing time due to suspensions and injuries. He was benched for the first quarter of the Vanderbilt game on Oct. 15 as a punishment for an undisclosed disciplinary infraction and he was suspended for the Nov. 5 New Mexico State game, reportedly for failing a drug test.
With Crowell out of the fold, Georgia will turn to redshirt sophomore Ken Malcome and senior Richard Samuel to carry the load early on, along with junior Brandon Harton. The Bulldogs also signed Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. — the top running back prospect in the country, according to 247Sports.com — and four-star prospect Todd Gurley of Tarboro, N.C., to play running back. Marshall enrolled in January.
Marshall and other running backs were offering support for Crowell via Twitter.
“Pray for Isaiah & that he will learn from his mistake,” wrote Marshall from @Truthh4.
Derrick Henry, a highly-touted running back prospect from Florida who once was committed to Georgia, also weighed in via his Twitter account, @KingHenry_2: “Pray for Crowell instead [of] bashing him . . . because everyone wasn’t raised the same. . . . So everyone should just pray he sees a better way”

If you want to see a racially intense environment…….go to downtown St. Pete……be a white soldier…..and watch 4 young black men chase you down and beat the hell out of you for just walking down the street. Then come up to Clearwater and watch a young white woman riding a bike through a “hood” neighborhood by mistake….and watch her be murdered….after stealing her food from her backpack.
Your black sons are much safer on a “white” college campus than they are in most “black” inner city neighborhoods. But you are welcome to keep those who carry Lugars under their car seat in the hood and away from college campuses.

Crowell had three 2012 signees in the car with him. I think we need to find a better mentor than Crowell for the young Dawgs. At least Crowell was smart enough to cruise the streets, packing heat with Josh Harvey-Clemons in the car. Josh’s family owns a bail bond company and probably bonded Isaiah out of jail.

This is sad because I want these guys to stay out of trouble away from football. Coach Richt has his hand full with players not playing early in the season and now this. I pray for these guys to due well in the community, get their degree, stay clean, and play football on the side. Anything less makes me sick!!!!

people read this…………MOST Illegal gun owners know about it. A pistol grip that has a Raised Grip Texture doesn’t HOLD full Finger Prints. Most finger prints are found on the Ejected casings. Use a Revolver but you will only have 6 to 9 shots as opposed to a 14 to 21 round automatic.
Sig P226 is great and the gun the Secret Service carries. I have one and the P-229.

tampa gator – you know nothing about GA gun laws. How many firearms have you purchased in GA lately? In the last year I have purchased several. When you buy a gun in GA they run a background check on you to see if you are a convicted felon. This happens in about 5 minutes and if you are clear then you pay and walk out of the store with your firearm. They do this using your SSN (as with any background check). The serial numbe on the gun stops with the dealer. It is to control the sales of guns and is not traced to the buyer. Noone on this earth knows the serial number on the guns in my house or in my vehicle. They do, however, know where the guns were purchased.

It is not against the law to have a gun in the car. It becomes a problem when it is under his seat and not in the glove box or in its holster with the snap closed. An altered serial # is a different story, now! If it is found to be a gun that had been used in a crime, all bets are off.

I have a Fraternity brother that is a Campus Police Chief at a university and another that is a Lead Investigator at another one….. It makes a big difference if he had the gun on campus property. If he was on campus with the weapon standard procedure is expulsion and a court date for trial. I don’t see how prison time can be avoided.

Tampa Gator-the road blocks and high patrol was design to regulate the “black element” in that area.
I plead with any parent of, especially single black mothers, think about before you send your sons to Athens GA, it is still the good ol boy network dont get it twisted.
Yes IC is not that bright but the enviroment he is happens to be the worst place for him or any other kid with slight character issues.
Until that outlook on how ot deal with these type of “Student Athletes” it will be an at risk enviroment.
Should I remind you of the time that Quincy Carter aka problem child sent in Athens. It is just not a good enviroment for a lot of talented yet at risk black kids.

That is the point…..and you have been missing the point….the serial number can be traced back to the place and person who bought the gun. Therefore…..the serial number was altered so it could not be traced. Why would Crowell do that? Because it was a stolen gun.
I live in Florida. I used to live in Georgia. When I did, I purchased shot guns and one hand gun…..which was later stolen from our house when we were robbed while on vacation. It was not a Lugar…..thank goodness…..but….because the serial number had been altered….it could not have been traced back to me if it had been a Lugar.

So what exactly is the Georgia law on this?
I know if you carry a concealed gun on you without a license it is a crime and if you carry it strapped to your leg out in the open it is legal in most places.
So if drive with a gun out of site it is a crime. If it is laying in plain view is it a crime?
If I borrow my neighbor’s truck and he has a gun stashed behind the seat and I don’t know about it is it a crime?
Does the gun have to be loaded for it to be a crime?
If my house is in a school zone and I have a gun in my car either in plain view or under the seat is that a crime?
And isn’t it the court’s responsiblity to determine from some expert if the serial number was altered or not?
I’m just saying that we are all innocent until proven guilty in a court of law by a jury of our peers and that includes IC. If I were IC I would get a lawyer and start asking questions.
I would also ask if the traffic stop was stopping all cars or just certain cars, ie profiling. If so the search may be ruled illegal and thrown out.
IC is stupid if he knew the gun was there. He was unfortunate if he did not. Either way, IC get a good attorney that knows the law and let him ask the right questions.

Innocent until proven guilty: I would suggest that before convicting Crowell of crimes and disrespecting the young man with all the name calling, on this blog, that it would be wise to await the legal system as it work’s through it’s due-process. It’s up to the Athens Police Department to prove his guilt in a court of law. Our justice system presumes innocence, which means that legally speaking, even the obviously guilty are treated as though they are innocent, until they are proven otherwise.
