UPDATE III: Georgia TB Isaiah Crowell dismissed after weapons arrest

UPDATED: CROWELL DISMISSED FROM TEAM
ATHENS – Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team following his arrest early Friday morning on three weapons charges.
Georgia coach Mark Richt made the announcement in short news release sent out by UGA Sports Communications at 5 p.m. on Friday.
“We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season,” Richt said. “Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort.”
Crowell, a sophomore from Columbus, was booked at 3:37 a.m. on charges of possessing a concealed weapon, having a weapon in a school zone and having an altered ID mark on that weapon. His bond, originally set at $7,500, was raised to $9,500 late Friday morning. According to booking records, Crowell was released early Friday afternoon.
According to the police report, four other Georgia football players were also in Crowell’s vehicle, including three 2012 freshman signees. Those persons were outside linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons, wide receiver Blake Tibbs and defensive back Sheldon Dawson. Also present was sophomore defensive back Quintavius Harrow. None of the four were charged.
According to Athens-Clarke police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow, Crowell was arrested at a “vehicle check-point” — or road block — on East Campus Road at Green Street at 2:20 a.m. Friday. Officer Kathryn Thornton reported smelling the odor of marijuana in Crowell’s silver four-door 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. Crowell gave consent to search the vehicle, himself and four other occupants. No marijuana was discovered but a black 9-mm Luger handgun with an altered serial number was found under the driver’s seat. Crowell was immediately arrested and taken to jail.
According to the police report, Crowell denied knowing the gun was in the car and said people drive the vehicle. He. The owner of the vehicle is listed as Crowell’s mother Debbie. The report also indicted that the five were coming from the nightclub Aftermath, where Crowell said the smell of marijuana originated.
The police report also indicated that Crowell has no criminal history.
Crowell’s mother, Debbie, was clearly distressed when reached by telephone Friday. “I don’t want to talk to a reporter right now,” she said. “”If I want to talk to anybody it’s God.”
Crowell, who came to UGA in 2011 as the No. 1-rated running back prospect in America, was slated to start for the Bulldogs at tailback this season. He rushed for 850 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman despite missing playing time due to suspensions and injuries. He was benched for the first quarter of the Vanderbilt game on Oct. 15 as a punishment for an undisclosed disciplinary infraction and he was suspended for the Nov. 5 New Mexico State game, reportedly for failing a drug test.
With Crowell out of the fold, Georgia will turn to redshirt sophomore Ken Malcome and senior Richard Samuel to carry the load early on, along with junior Brandon Harton. The Bulldogs also signed Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. — the top running back prospect in the country, according to 247Sports.com — and four-star prospect Todd Gurley of Tarboro, N.C., to play running back. Marshall enrolled in January.
Marshall and other running backs were offering support for Crowell via Twitter.
“Pray for Isaiah & that he will learn from his mistake,” wrote Marshall from @Truthh4.
Derrick Henry, a highly-touted running back prospect from Florida who once was committed to Georgia, also weighed in via his Twitter account, @KingHenry_2: “Pray for Crowell instead [of] bashing him . . . because everyone wasn’t raised the same. . . . So everyone should just pray he sees a better way”

Though this arrest is certainly justified (two guns Isaiah…come on son), I still say that we never would have heard about something like this about an Auburn or Bama player getting arrested in Auburn or Tuscaloosa. Even those places have questionable morals in regards to their football programs, I don’t think all these player arrests that have occurred in Athens over the past few years in comparison to the lack there of in the locations of our competitors has helped US win any national championships.

I think he has seen the light before, but it doesn’t seem to have registered. He has little or no common sense and certainly no integrity. I know nothing about his family, but I will assume it is not a positive force. He is not a kid and has shown nothing but disrespect for the school, team, and coache, who have tried to help him. Enough already, get rid of him and give someone who deserves the opportunity that Crowell has blown!

I apologize for the shot at Carver-Columbus High School earlier. It was not right or fair to make that kind of blanket statement about a school.
It is the decisions made by individuals that cause those individuals to have success or failure. Unfortunately, some individuals are a part of a culture that breeds these kind of decisions. I really wish there were a way to intervene and help these kids understand the valuable gift they are given and trained to make good choices so they can turn in around and be successful.
I really hope and pray Isaiah will finally learn a lesson and reverse the path he is on. It’s not just about football at this point.

After approaching the road block the officer reported that Crowell didn’t have his seatbelt on, and that Thornton said she smelled marijuana from the car.
Crowell said he’d been at the club “Aftermath” and that was likely where the smell was coming from. Thornton asked if marijuana had been smoked in the car… Crowell said no, but that the smell was likely from the club.
Right, that happens all the time.

I don’t recall anyone saying Crowell should have a huge year last year? It was widely noted that UGA was thin at RB and starting a freshmen is far from an ideal situation. Crowell showed up out of shape and with an attitude. It’s also notable that Crowell was the SEC Freshmen of the year.

@phil.. Not making any excuses at all..McClendon, Garner, should have gotten to him or let him go long ago..Concerning the serial number charge, Neither you nor I know what that really is about. There are mechanisms in place to retrieve altered or damaged serial numbers on weapons. At some point we will know if its stolen.. If it is, I’ll apologized on this forum. hope you will do the same. An example of the things that happen to weapons.. I worked as a Deputy while going to law school, At the gun range one morning, My Lt walks in and says she cant get the magazine out of her weapon. Ok,..I ask did anything happen to it? “well I was using it as a hammer to fix something”…why the hell would you do that? ” I couldn’t find my hammer”..I’ve seen a lotta things…

This kid is just not very bright. He won’t know what he lost until a few years down the road when he hopefully, grows up. He obviously needs a full time mentor/nanny to keep him on the straight and narrow. What steams me is that he had four of his younger teammates with him that he should have been mentoring. Instead, he is taking them down with him. God help them all.

First Jasper Sanks and now Crowell!!!!!!!! He is about out of chances! A college education is a priviledge and not a right. I’m tired of kids killing this type of opportunity with straight stupidity!!! Give his scholarship to someone who cares! There are so many people out busting their butts in everyday reality that would kill to be where he is or was. He deserves no excuses! He is 19 and legally a grown man who can make decisions on his own. They are just not good decisions! Georgia will be fine without him! We have a stable of runningbacks that know how to do the right thing. I’m also tired of some of the comments about everybody is raised different. He is 19 and not 5! I hope when he is 25 or 30 he realizes how much he was blowing or blew such a great chance. These high schools that send athletes to school care so much about winning that they forget to teach these kids life lessons so they have to learn the hard way later on! I will pray he turns his life around but I think its about time he did it at a smaller college because he is not ready for the bright lights!
