UPDATED: CROWELL DISMISSED FROM TEAM

ATHENS – Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team following his arrest early Friday morning on three weapons charges.

Georgia coach Mark Richt made the announcement in  short news release sent out by UGA Sports Communications at 5 p.m. on Friday.

“We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season,” Richt said. “Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort.”

Crowell, a sophomore from Columbus, was booked at 3:37 a.m. on charges of possessing a concealed weapon, having a weapon in a school zone and having an altered ID mark on that weapon. His bond, originally set at $7,500, was raised to $9,500 late Friday morning. According to booking records, Crowell was released early Friday afternoon.

According to the police report, four other Georgia football players were also in Crowell’s vehicle, including three 2012 freshman signees. Those persons were outside linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons, wide receiver Blake Tibbs and defensive back Sheldon Dawson. Also present was sophomore defensive back Quintavius Harrow. None of the four were charged.

According to Athens-Clarke police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow, Crowell was arrested at a “vehicle check-point” — or road block — on East Campus Road at Green Street at 2:20 a.m. Friday. Officer Kathryn Thornton reported smelling the odor of marijuana in Crowell’s silver four-door 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis. Crowell gave consent to search the vehicle, himself and four other  occupants. No marijuana was discovered but a black 9-mm Luger handgun with an altered serial number was found under the driver’s seat. Crowell was immediately arrested and taken to jail.

According to the police report, Crowell denied knowing the gun was in the car and said people drive the vehicle. He. The owner of the vehicle is listed as Crowell’s mother Debbie. The report also indicted that the five were coming from the  nightclub Aftermath, where Crowell said the smell of marijuana originated.

The police report also indicated that Crowell has no criminal history.

Crowell’s mother, Debbie, was clearly distressed when reached by telephone Friday. “I don’t want to talk to a reporter right now,” she said. “”If I want to talk to anybody it’s God.”

Crowell, who came to UGA in 2011 as the No. 1-rated running back prospect in America, was slated to start for the Bulldogs at tailback this season. He rushed for 850 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman despite missing playing time due to suspensions and injuries. He was benched for the first quarter of the Vanderbilt game on Oct. 15 as a punishment for an undisclosed disciplinary infraction and he was suspended for the Nov. 5 New Mexico State game, reportedly for failing a drug test.

With Crowell out of the fold, Georgia will turn to redshirt sophomore Ken Malcome and senior Richard Samuel to carry the load early on, along with junior Brandon Harton. The Bulldogs also signed Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. — the top running back prospect in the country, according to 247Sports.com — and four-star prospect Todd Gurley of Tarboro, N.C., to play running back. Marshall enrolled in January.

Marshall and other running backs were offering support for Crowell via Twitter.

“Pray for Isaiah & that he will learn from his mistake,” wrote Marshall from @Truthh4.

Derrick Henry, a highly-touted running back prospect from Florida who once was committed to Georgia, also weighed in via his Twitter account, @KingHenry_2: “Pray for Crowell instead [of] bashing him . . . because everyone wasn’t raised the same. . . . So everyone should just pray he sees a better way”

More information to come when it’s available.

If you did not see this coming you need a guide dog!

One of his running buddies caught stealing out of the UGA locker room last year while on a recruiting visit.

Another buddy busted for selling drugs in Columbus.

Suspensions for drug use.

Academic questions.

The total culture at UGA is in dire consequences and arrest after arrest after failed drug test after failed drug test should tell ANY parent of a recruit to not allow your kid on that campus until some major changes are made. It is called being a responsible parent.

Okay, what kind of concealed weapon? Gun, knife, nun-chuks? I have a CCW permit and I can carry my weapons into a school zone in my vehicle. Most people don’t seem to know that a law abiding and legal citizen can carry his weapons onto school grounds(not into a school) in a state where specifically allowed by law and GA is such a state.

I’ve got an idea of this guy’s circumstances and of the type of gun he was carrying(some kind of handgun). However according to the letter of the law he could have been openly carrying an AK-47 and if he had been, he could not have been charged. Look it up. He could have claimed that he was a collector, a hunter, etc. and nothing would have happened with the cops anyway.

The problem here is that someone at UGA needs to educate these kids about the legal details of carrying weapons if they choose to. They are on the edge of being adults(literally & legally) and there are different age standards for different types of guns(to carry a rifle they have to be 18 and to carry a handgun, 21).

He didn’t hurt or kill anyone, so give him a break.

The 9mm might not have been Crowell’s gun..it might have belong to one of the three in back seat who put it under seat when they saw the road block. Just saying did he say it way his?

Can We get this sorry excuse for an Institution of Higher Learning out of the Conference already??!!

You’re an idiot, typical Bammer. There is not a team in this country that dont have these problems. UGA can only move on from this waste of a great talent, they will be fine.

Im sure we can dig up many from the Bammer program and any other program out there, we all have these problems time to time. The start players are way to coddled at the HS level and recruiters. Stupid fans like you have no class, but then again your a Bammer!

ALL HAND Guns must be registered.
he could have it in the car.
Not within reach and hidden. In the trunk or locked glove box would have been fine

I did say Florida backed off Wilder because of character issues……and I have said that Muschamp has clearly stated…..and shown already…..that character matters big time when he offers recruits. That does not mean that he may have issues with some recruit down the road. Florida has not more or less problems with these types of issues vs. any major college program. But Muschamp is working hard to limit them now. That is what I am saying.

“Florida has not more or less problems with these type issues vs any major colllege program.”

That statement would only be true if you added …in the past week or 10 days. UF under Meyer had has many or more than ANY other school in country. And that is a fact. Now Muschamp had to deal with all the crumbling infrastructure Urban left and has done a good job dealing with those problems Urban allowed to happen. Some of those decisions by Muschamp have hurt his program but even under Muschamp the problems have continued but not at the rate as they did under Meyer.

Slydog, no it isn’t legal to carry an unlicensed, unregistered, concealed firearm in Georgia. Otherwise you wouldn’t need to apply for a concealed weapons permit and Mr. Crowell wouldn’t be charged with a felony.

This has nothing to do with the color of his skin. It has everything to do with incredibly poor judgement. Another life wasted because he wasn’t able to get out of his own way.

We can have all the debates we want about marijuana, but the fact remains it’s illegal. Driving around and smoking it in a car in Athens is mind numbingly stupid. Adding an illegal firearm to that is just inexplicable. Especially for a guy with so much at stake. All he had to do was not drive around doing anything illegal and he had all the opportunity in the world to succede.

This is yet another sad, miserable story of bad choices, not skin color.

This comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed IC on twitter. Most of the UGA players post fun, humorous or uplifting messages while IC’s post were all threatening, negative, used the “n” word, etc. Jarvis Jones proves you can come from the same background and be a success on and off the field. For those blaming Richt, not sure how he can monitor the team when he is not allowed to have contact with them in the offseason. Also, ever since they eliminated the “jock dorm” the players live all over the place and are impossible to monitor. Dawgs will be fine, maybe better, without IC. Plenty of talent in the backfield and we could have more coming.

50 arrests people. 50…Thats gotta be hard to overlook. Or maybe not in Georgia’s case. When does this get to be a serious issue for the crowd in Athens? Is there a “magic number” that has to be achieved before changes at the top are made? AD’s department probably working right now on a “50th arrest jail cell-a-bration” patch to be worn on the jersey’s for the thrilling Buffalo opener. read the law , having a gun on a college campus without a georgia weapon license is a felony and with a license it can only be in your car , not carried on your person ect.. I am willing to bet he did not have a weapon carry permit and with the numbers scratched off that is a federal crime ..

laws are laws and if your going to carry a gun read up on them .. Seems to be the only people who do are the ones who legally carry a weapon with a permit .
