ATHENS – I had a brief conversation with Greg McGarity yesterday and it was clear to me that the annual all-sports standings are very important to Georgia’s still relatively new AD.

McGarity
It was revealed earlier this week that the Bulldogs finished 18th in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings (formerly known as Sears Cup), presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). That was up slightly from 20th last year. I honestly didn’t think much of it and McGarity wanted to know if I was going to write anything about it. I told him I planned to mention it in some upcoming notes but hadn’t planned to do much more with it.
Taking a closer look, I saw that Georgia tallied 833.25 points — third among SEC teams (Florida and LSU were ranked ahead) — and produced five top 10 national finishes in women’s swimming (2nd), women’s tennis (5th), men’s tennis (5th), women’s gymnastics (7th) and softball (9th). Stanford was first in the rankings — for the 18th consecutive year — with 1,444.25 points, followed by Florida (1314), UCLA (1142.75), Ohio State (1104.25) and Florida State (1061). LSU was the next highest SEC school at 13th with 967.75 points.
I asked McGarity how he felt about Georgia’s overall performance.
“What you want to see annually is improvement,” said McGarity, who is closing on two years as the Bulldogs’ director of athletics. “While it’s not anywhere close to where we want to be, it does show a measure of improvement nationally. At the end of the day, this is something on which everybody in the world of athletics is judged on a national basis. That is where you stand as a result of NCAA championship competition.”
McGarity’s interest piqued my interest, so I decided to take a closer look at these annual rankings and how Georgia has done over the years. I remembered that Georgia finished real high, somewhere in the top five, around the turn of the century under then AD Vince Dooley. Sure enough, the Bulldogs finished No. 2 in 1998-99. They won four national championships that year — in men’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving.
I wondered how Georgia has done over the years, so I called UGA’s sports communications office and they were able to provide the following list:
Honestly, I had never taken a close look at the standings or how they are complied before now. You have to realize that the rankings somewhat favor the schools that field a lot of sports. The points are compiled from 20 varsity sports, which is all Georgia fields (21 if one includes equestrian, which is not currently NCAA sanctioned). But if a school fields 34 or 36 varsity sports — as do Stanford and Ohio State, respectively — they record the top 20 finishers among those teams.
So the rankings look different — and a little better — for Georgia if you break it down among schools utilizing the same sports. Using that sampling, the top 10 would look like this:
Still good but probably not as good as McGarity would like.
Again, for many of you I’m sure this seems much ado about nothing. But, as I said, clearly it something that’s important to McGarity. And it goes a long way to explain some of his recent actions, which included replacing the gymnastics and women’s golf coaches at UGA. Those are traditionally national championship contenders for the Bulldogs, but haven’t been lately.
Thoughts?

Expectations? UGA’s AD, UGA ADM. EXEC Staff, UGA influential alumni and heavy contributors? THESE are the people that are expecting big things with the football program for 2012/2013, albeit very quietly.
UGA should have a quality QB with 2 high quality back ups, quality receivers, D line, LBs, Corners, Safeties, and Running backs. UGA needs to develop a durable, worthy of SEC play O line and a Special Teams esprit de’ corps and swagger. These last areas will be where UGA sinks of swims.
IF the pieces all come together with an EXPECTED QUIET Summer, UGA minimally should end up in the SEC CG and have a 50-50% shot at that, then go from there. If we fall short, ending up in the Chic Fil A or the Outback, it might surprise a lot of people with sudden change. UGA would not want to limp into 2013 with a renwed lame duck coaching staff like last summer into fall. No way.
UGA needs to win big this year to indicate major progress and renewed direction.

Excellent post
McGarity wants championships and the table is set for football 2012. What is interesting is to see the floor for replacing Richt if the season does not pan out with great success.
He is clearly expected to do great things.
I personally have very high expectations for this team.

The big thing is having consistent metrics across common sports – I would like to see the NCAA list metrics based on common sports – then a ranking on schools based on “extended” sports. A school could be horrible in football, baseball, basketball, golf, track N field – but field teams where there is not much competition – like men’s soccer, lacrosse, water polo, beach volleyball, etc.
I am glad that Stanford and other schools have these sports – but a lot of schools need can not offer due to title 9 and the associated costs.
Mens sports:
Football
Basketball
Baseball
Swimming & Diving
Golf
Cross Country
Track & Field
(Wrestling, Lacrosse, Soccer, water polo, volleyball, etc would be extended sports)
Women:
Soccer
basketball
softball
golf
cross country’
track and field
swimming and diving
maybe gymnastics
equestrian, water polo, lacrosse, etc would be extended sports
At any rate – common metrics would be the way to do this.

If he wants better results he needs to get better coaches plain and simple. He will wind up firing every coach except football, basketball and baseball Then he will turn to the alumni and say what more do you want, I’m not afraid to grab the bull by the horns> I hope the equestrian gal doesn’t screw up because she will be gone next!!!!!!

McGarity’s average finish is #19, which is the worst 2 years average in 20 years. I do think he’s in over his head. Your really judged by 2 sports, basketball and football. I won’t even comment on the state of the basketball team. The football team hasn’t won a single game in McGarity’s 2 seasons against a team that finished in the AP Polls top 25. That’s something Richt has never experienced in a 2 year span as a coach at Georgia, so it’s obvious whatever AD Greg M is TRYING to do, to help Mark Richt, man, has everything he has TRIED failed. Let’s put it simply, if the football doesn’t beat a high ranekd team for the 3rd year, I think AD Greg M will, and should be, fired. The only saving grace would be if that happened, if the baskeytball team finished in the top 25. Averaging a #19 nationally isn’t an improvement over any 2 year span over the last 2 decades and would match the worst ranking of any AD over the 2 decades.

Looks like McGarity’s hoping that his incompetence in football and basketball, will be covered up, by looking at how the swin and tennis teams do. Those make no money for the college.
It’s hotseat time for the AD Greg McG, finish top 10 in football, as preseason polls suggest, or finish top 25 in basketball, or get out and give the job to someone who can.

Football is about the only sport that makes money. Georgia may break even on a few more, but for the most part schools that have as many as 36 teams are going to be private or charge a lot more per student to make up the defiant. Why have a team if nobody cares to go watch them and just run up the cost per student without any good reason. Georgia should be always in the top 10 when comparing us to schools that play the same sports. We rank 9TH and if you go back to 1998 I think you would find out that we are in the top 10 mast every year. That’s pretty good if you ask me. If McGarity wants to get us in the top 5 , go knock yourself out , either way I am satisfied.

Looking at this from a statistical standpoint, the worst years overall were during the “red pantie days” of the Damon Evans era. Evans years showed a decline every year and his last two years were just as bad as @Brent’s reference to McGarity’s. Actually, McGarity’s is decreasing in his first two years which means he is showing improvement. As long as he keeps improving the overall athletic department I’m happy. Those who want the quick fix generally find that the fix doesn’t last long and needs sooner repairs.

There are only 5 sports that in my opinion we need to have arguably the best facilities in the country , none should be better. Baseball, Basketball, Swimming, Gymnastics and football. In Football we should have built a full indoor practice facility instead of just 40 yards. Other sports could have used it like soccer but it makes Georgia look cheap and with some recruits it doesn’t come close to impressing them as the teams that show them a new state of the art full field.
Our baseball fiels could be better even though it is great compared to what I practiced on in the 70’s.
Our Basketball facility is pathetic compared to the best. The facilities for Swimming and Gymnastics do not have the WOW factor that I would have. Every recruit that come to Georgia for any sport should repeat the word WOW, WOW, WOW. We have the money and the fans we just need our leaders to have a little imagination and find out what WOW means.

Have you been to Stegeman lately? Upgrades have improved it significantly. Not a showplace, but good enough not to hurt recruiting. The gymnastics and basketball practice facilities are state of the art- few are better. Swimming facility is not that old. Interesting that once it was built, Bauerle started winning SEC and national titles. Tennis setup is the best in the collegiate business. Baseball needs upgrading as you mentioned.

I think McGarity is doing a great job. Some on this blog want to criticize him for not being a magician. It will take 5 maybe 10 years to get everything into place that needs to change. It is not McGarity’s fault that Evans was not qualified to be an Athletic Director. McGarity spent one year just accessing what needed to be done, which he should have. No need to change something if it isn’t broke. Now you are seeing a lot of changes and a lot more are coming. For example if Bobo doesn’t do any better as an Offensive Coordinator than he did last year he will be replaced and with Mike Adams leaving McGarity will have a much greater say in what the changes need to be without the President’s involvement. Nobody is safe if they don’t win or give one HE@@ of an effort.

I forgot about the Tennis facility and I agree with you. Stegeman is much better but I don’t think the recruit’s say WOW when they go into the building. I wouldn’t tear it down because of the history but Georgia could build a much better new facility that would be second to none.
The swimming facility and the Gymnastic isn’t bad but when I go into the building , it’s just a big building and I don’t get the WOW factor that I think you should get. Don’t get me wrong, things have improved a million times in the last 10 to 20 years but more CLASS AND SOPHISTICATION should be obvious than it is, which would give a DA@@ NICE LOOKING FACILITY response and change it to WOW, WOW.

I agree with 7576DAWG, McGarity is putting his imprint on the athletic program and doing a great job. I understand some fans’ frustration that he decided to keep Perno on (I too wanted him gone and a fresh start for the baseball program), and obviously Richt let the program slide and deserves to be on notice from here on out. I think Richt, Fox, and Perno need to have big years in ‘12/13….I fear Fox’s subpar recruiting is gonna come back to bite him.

The problem here is that people actually think athletics makes money for the university, the athletics program makes money for the athletic association. I think college sports are far more interesting than the pro variety, but I also think we should stop allowing schools to perpetuate the student-athlete myth. Do not recruit athletes who have no chance of EARNING an actual college degree. The majors of most basketball and football players are so laughable they aren’t even listed anymore, at one time they were. In fact just eliminate athletic scholarships completely, place the emphasis in college on academics, with athletics being what it should be, an extra curricular activity. Stop the insane recruiting process and glorification of whoever had the fastest 40 or best jumpshot, imagine if instead the emphasis were placed on those young adults who actually did what they were supposed to in high school, and had a 3.8+ GPA with a 32 or better on the ACT. Universities are supposed to places of learning, the football and basketball coaches shouldn’t make more than the total English department budget. Instead of donating thousands or millions to the athletic associations, well heeled alumni could donate instead to the general scholarship fund, or even establish academic scholarships in the name of a family member. Wouldn’t it be better if the University of Georgia were renowned for the success of it’s graduates and quality of it’s Academics, rather than as a football school.

I’d like to make a comment about Richt’s bowl record. After 11 years, he is 7-4 in bowl games. When you compare his bowl record vs Dooley and Bryant, he’s a wizard! Dooley was 4-7 after 11 years and 8-10-2. Bryant was 5-5-1 in his first 11 years at Bama and 12-10-2 throughout his coaching career.
Woody Hayes was 5-6 in Bowls and Nick Saban is 5-6. And Darth Visor is 8-11 in bowls.
Based on the bowl records of Dooley and Bryant, both College Hall of Fame members, and other coaches, Richt’s doing pretty well.

I think someone mentioned it earlier that this puts the Football, B-ball, and Baseball coaches on alert. With the schedule set up as it is in football, now two years running, CMR had better not go 10-4, losing to the only quality teams he played. And, poor CMF. I think the man can coach, but his recruiting is not good, but who with top b-ball credentials really has UGA on their short list? As far as the other b-ball, Perno has let that program really slide downward since the CWS run of 2008. A question for someone in the know….do Women’s sports come under McGarity’s jurisdiction? If so, ole Andy needs to go for sure. The game seems to have passed him by! My biggest concern with UGA athletics is that so many of the best recruits, particularly in football are leaving the state. I know that some just want to go away, or we cannot sign them all, but we seem to be back peddling with regard to many of the top players on the state. Maybe winning more in the major sports would help, so I think our AD has that on his radar perhaps.

McGarity is a powerful leader when it comes to minor sports and firing women. But to “man up” and take down a respected but underachieving football coach …. well that thought gives him diarrhea.
He will take mediocrity to avoid the chance that he might make a mistake on a new coach. He’s weak but his job is safe.

I’m starting to become convinced that UGA and the three major pro sports franchises in Atlanta are in some kind of sick symbiosis with each other. They all share three common traits: resistance to change, a preference for character over talent, and complete failure on the biggest stages. Heck, you could probably include Tech in that group as well.
If McGarity is serious about getting UGA’s athletics program back to an elite level, he’s going to have to make some hard decisions on some very well-respected coaches.
It’s probably time for a new coach to lead the baseball program. Perno has had some great moments, but there’s been far too much inconsistency.
The women’s basketball program is also not where it should be. It’d be hard to fire a legend like Landers, but it may be a necessary evil at this point. The best thing would be for him to step aside gracefully.
I’m a Richt fan, but if the Dawgs lay another stinker of a season with huge expectations, a la 2008, then it may even be time for him to go, as sad as that is for me to say.
I believe McGarity has the stones to make the tough decisions, and he may have to very soon. UGA athletics should not be this mediocre.

Look where UF stands on these lists. McGarity learned under Foley, who is the best AD in the land. Have some faith in the guy and know that he will bring UGA athletics up to a similar level with UF within the next 5-7 years. He knows what he’s doing and I’m sure he is pretty passionate about it because he was a UGA student-athlete, himself. I still believe he was a GREAT hire and will ensure the Dawg Nation is proud of their athletic programs under his watch.

I have 2 thoughts: 1- The trend has not been good the last 4-5 years; 2- non-revenue sports are carrying most of the weight…as they go, so goes the ranking. If we’re going to be where we want to be as a total athletic program, that has to change.

The standard set by previous AD’s like Evans, as far as competing with the best teams, in sports like football and basketball, has fallen to a low I can’t remember since maybe early 80’s? I mean, how does the football team go 0 & 9 vs. teams that end up top 25 under the new AD, when they did much better under Evans? i’ll tell you why? Some guys just arn’t leaders, like Derek Dooley, just because Derek Dooley coached under Nick Saban, doesn’t mean he can lead like Saban or make Saban like decisions and get Saban like results. Same is true of this amateur AD, just because he served under Foley, obviously, due to his anemic leadership skills, his atrocious judgment, and his dismal results (0 & 9 mentioned above), he will be fired within minutes after the Oct 2012 loss to Florida is my guess (assuming UGA loses to South Carolina for the 3rd straight year too). Just can’t let a guy like that continue to run the program into the ground.

All the Richt school zombies will pooh pooh this rating, but the numbers do not lie. We have gone from one of the very best programs ten years ago, around the time that Richt was hired, down to average today. This also corresponds to the era of Red Panties Vince Dooley poster child Damon “Red Panties” Evans.
McGarrity is just a UGA good ole boy. He isn’t going to rock the boat, and probably doesn’t have the acumen to improve the lot even if he wanted. He really flexed his muscles by firing the Gym Dawgs coach and the women’s golf coach, huh?!? Meanwhile, Preacha Man got a contract extension with his incompetent buddy Mike Bobo. To say that CMR’s entire tenure as head coach has been a disaster would be unfair. Count me as one Dawg fan that is not happy about the results the last 4 years. I can gurantee you that you can also count AD McGarity as a Dawg fan who isn’t happy either. He learned his way @ UF under Foley, who is one of the best in collegiate sports. You can believe it or ignore it, I don’t care, But I gurantee you if your scenario of 9-3 or 8-4 plays out, UGA will be looking for a new head coach. McGarity has a window with Adams leaving to make changes and he won’t miss that chance if a change is warranted. All those other sports are great for the participants and their parents, but don’t pay the bills, or all those salaries for the army of assoc. AD’s over there. Football is king. It’s the money, the passion, the masses. When you sell 95,000 tickets to a tennis match and split a billion dollar TV contract, get back to me. If McGarity took 100 questions from alum, 90+ would be about football. And as of now, we ain’t beat a good team in 3 years. Name one big win if I’m wrong. That’s what he better be worried about.

No we find out, as everyone expected, that strength of schedule will be a major factor in the new playoff system starting in 2014.
So, AS USUAL, this AD’s STRATEGY, PLANNING, was DEAD WRONG. This guy’s schduling will set us back years, his whole strategy and training was on how to win National Championships with the weakest strength of schedule.
McGarity doesn’t have the tools in his toolbox for the new playoff scenario, as such, the Board should move, AS QUICKLY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE, to REVERSE this DECISION before McGarity does a DECADE of damage with his scheduling. McGarity is UNFIT for the job.

Check out Florida’s OOC schedule in the years they won the MNC and then repost your thoughts. You may also want to check the OOC schedule of Bama and Auburn in the years they won the MNC recently. I think McGarity is smarter than most of you posters. Snoop, I agree with your opinion on Richt, I just choose to be a little more subtle when criticizing him. Lakedawg, you are a kool aid guzzling maniac, no matter what the results, you would continue to support Richt. Despite the public show of support, if Richt doesn’t have a successful season I think he’s gone, his choice, or McGarity’s. He’s stubbornly stayed the course, to long with Martinez, Bobo, and others. I admire his loyalty to a point, but not at the programs expense. I think he had a legitimate chance to bring the Fridge on as OC but didn’t have the backbone to do it. We’re not paying him to build a family environment, we’re paying him to build and maintain a championship program. I try and be supportive but in reality, if you don’t agree with a cause, why try and hide it for political correctness.
On another note, God Bless America, we’re in trouble, the great people of this country have made several stands in history, another may be necessary to save what we have worked for. To many people are taking things for granted. What we have could be gone in the near future. Football is entertainment, not life.

Wake up Linwe, this isn’t Kansas. McGarity has bent over backwards to help Richt succeed. It’s now or never for Richt, JMO.

Look at those rankings from the Dooley era and then the Damon Evans era. It appears that after a or so under Evans’ leadership, the rankings started going downhill.
I believe the opposite will be true under McGarity leadership.

it is what it is—–until those who have the power choose to set things right—–it is going to be what it is ——–I cannot change any of it——powerless I am. Hope everyone has a great weekend!! Maybe one dayin the future UGA will be a powerhouse in the SEC. But we all know that the tweak has not happened yet.

Did McGarity mean: IN the Court, or ON the court.

Old Dawg, those coaches were in MAJOR bowls most if not all of those years. Richt has not been in but three or four major bowls. He has won two Sugar Bowls and lost one. Not bad. Cap One Bowl, he has won every one of them.

How has Crowell’s Performance Off Field going so far Mr. McGarity?
When will you hold Richt and his coaches responsible for this ongoing joke of an NCAA Football Program!?
Of course the above is only my private opinion and I could be wrong.

That’s the burning question that a lot of people want answered. We’re talking about both on-field and off-field performance, too. UGA has become a total disgrace.

“AD Greg McGarity looking for better overall performance from UGA athletics”
Really? How can that be? He extended Richt’s contract.
