Video: College football approves four-team playoff

The university presidents and chancellors who oversee the BCS agreed Tuesday, at a meeting in Washington, to introduce a four-team college-football playoff beginning in the 2014 season. Check out this CineSport video for details on the playoff and comments from the chairman of the BCS presidential oversight committee:

Actually, Freddo, UGA should be excited about this … they haven’t won a Championship during the current BCS system … why be anything but optimistic about the new Playoff system?? SEC Conference Champion will be a LOCK for being selected for the Playoffs, so just win the Conference, genius.

Will they never get rid of these Bowls? The Bowls have been robbing college football for decades. What kind of hold do these Bowl committees have over the college presidents?

The only fans who don’t like this arrangement are those outside the SEC. The SEC will have at least 2 teams in the final 4 for years to come. Might have 3 or 4 if the pollsters do the right thing. Sorry Big 10, sorry Big 12, sorry…….ahem…..ACC, them’s the facts.

Not that I think it will happen but I really can’t figure out why SEC fans would want this. It makes your conference championship completely meaningless and doesn’t really prove anything.

Uh oh, AD G McGarity messed up again with his EASY CUPCAKE WALK 2014 schedule.

He should have had the foresight to see this one coming.

ANOTHER pathetic decision by our rookie AD.

All about strength of schedule now, not AD G McGarity’s philosophy, he likes to schedule cupcakes. But now, his error prone philosophy will cost us a shot in 2014.

Agreed on the the strength of schedule, but 2014 might be ok. Clemson and GT out of conference. Most schools are going to still have two cupcake games because they need the revenue from the extra home games, but you aren’t going to be able to get away with three, like UGA has in 2012. Better also stop playing FCS schools – that would be an easy tiebreaker for the selection committee.

Why is everyone so excited about the playoff? This decision hasABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with improving ANYTHING in college sports. It’s all about the 5 BILLION dollars it will generate and line the pockets of media executives and university coffers. If anything, you just w itnessed an already corrupt and convoluted system become even more so. In the end, a few people on some committee will still make a completely arbitrary decision on who the 4teams will be. This solves nothing. But it’s going to make afew people a lot of money. Amatuer sports? The concept is extinct. Let’s quit recruiting high school kids and just offer them 4 year contracts and bid for thrir services. It’s the next logical step.

They’ve preserved some level of importance for the regular season, which I applaud. The new 4-Team Playoffs will essentially be the SECOND round of Playoffs … with the regular season being the first. Win your Division and/or Conference, and you’ve got a better chance of being one of those 4 teams.

For the SEC:: Every SEC team will already be recognized as having a great strength of schedule … couple that with a Conference Championship win and you’re a lock for the 4-Team Playoffs.

And as for the academic and mental superiority of Tech students ~ I see now where they are shooting each other at the North Avenue trade school. The shooter will have a hard time convincing a judge he was in fear of his life when there were three of them vs one incoherent and drugged up intruder. They now say the intruder thought he was breaking into his own apt. which he had locked himself out of. I hope the young man recovers fully. Yep, the best and brightest are surely going to Tech these days.

I don’t know what was in the video, as I have yet to watch one in my years of following AJC blogs. Nevertheless, I am pleased that there is a playoff, but I am not pleased that conference championship status has been relegated to a “consideration.” Why bother, then, with playing the CCG? Maybe in another 14 years, after the expiration of this new agreement, it will have been figured out. Eliminate the CCG, cut back the season to 11 games (since some conferences are going to play on 8 conference games, and use that extra 2 weeks to expand the playoffs.

@Delbert D, I agree. Get rid of the conference championship game and name the conference champion the team that won the most conference games with the tie breaker being rankings. Expand the playoff to 8 teams. That is only 3 games the winner and runner up play…. minus the conference championship game, it is only 2 post season games. (same as with the new playoff)

More fans, players and couches would be satisfied and the cash flow to the NCAA will be greatly enhanced.

This is all about money, moolah, green, cabbage, etc or whatever you call it. Why do the NCAA and the school presidents keep trying to get a little bit pregnant? If this is really going to be a “playoff” you need at least 8 teams minimum.

@tell me again, et al

I agree. There’s still going to be controversy over who’s on the selection committee and which teams end up being the final four. Fans all over the country will be raising Cain that some team(s) didn’t get picked.

They’re flirting with an absurdly long season with too many games. This aint the pros. Perhaps if we had a 10-game regular season? A Div II-type playoff system?

One thing I hope they do is lessen the weighting of the coaches poll. Most coaches have no idea about most other teams; just they one’s on their schedules.

Anyway, like some of us are pointing out; still going to be a lot of controversy. This four team playoff isn’t a whole lot better than the status quo BCS formula and it’s leading to way too many games being played by amateurs who aren’t getting paid.

There will always be a chance the best team isn’t picked until they go to an eight team playoff. The Championship should go to the best team at the end of the year and many times the coaches don’t even have their starters playing until the second, third or fourth game. So if the best team had to play two really hard games to start the season and lost both but had the team set after the second game and they beat everybody easily after that they wouldn’t even be given a chance in a four team playoff but if the playoff was the best eight schools they would get in.

The good thing about any playoff ,whether it the best 4 teams or best 8 teams is TCU, Boise State, Notre Dame Utah and a half dozen more are not ever going to be able to get into the playoff unless they plat 3 or 5 really good teams throughout the entire season. Beating one great team to start the season just will not cut it . These freeloaders trying to beat the system will have to play somebody hard in the middle and end of the season. It will be hard to believe Notre Dame want join a Conference now and until they do I hope they will be frozen out of the playoff’s.
