Rodney Garner believes Georgia's 2012 defensive line can stack up with some of the best he has coached for the Bulldogs. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS – Georgia defensive line coach Rodney Garner is not one to toss a lot of bouquets, especially in the middle of the summer with actual games still three months from being played. But he can’t suppress his excitement (a relative term here) when it comes to the group set to hold the line for the Bulldogs this fall.
Noseguards Kwame Geathers and John Jenkins, defensive ends Abry Jones and Garrison Smith and backups Sterling Bailey, Ray Drew, Mike Thornton and Cornelius Washington, provide Georgia with the three most important needs of an exceptional D-line — size, athleticism and depth. They also bring some intangibles to the equation, according to Garner.
“I’m proud of these guys. I really am,” Garner said this past week. “I’m proud of the type of young men that the are. I’m proud of the things they bring to the table, not just from an athleticism standpoint, but for overall work ethic, for leadership qualities, everything. I’ll be honest with you, I’m really honored just to have the opportunity to coach them, just looking at how they’ve matured over the years.”
Garner has coached some great defensive lines in his 15 seasons with the Bulldogs. He stops short of labeling the 2012 group as the best he’s had — for him, the 2000 D-line is a slam dunk in that regard. But he said this year’s line does remind him a little of that unit, which included Richard Seymour, Marcus Stroud, Charles Grant and Josh Mallard, with Johnathan Sullivan as the primary backup.
Seymour (6th) and Stroud (13th), Grant (25th) and Sullivan (6th) all became NFL first-round draft picks, while Mallard and backup Demetric Evans also played in the NFL.
“Four first-round picks on the same D-line; that’s a pretty good deal,” Garner said. “And Tyrone Robertson was supposed to be on that team, too, but he got in some academic trouble and had to go to Hines (Community College). Jonathan Sullivan was the No. 1 backup as a true freshman and he blacked up Richard and Marcus pretty good [in practice].”
Garner wasn’t sure if the 2012 unit is destined for the level of NFL success the 2000 line did, but he likes what he sees in these individuals. His observations:
On Jones, the senior defensive end . . .
“I look at Abry, who I think is a heck of a player who doesn’t get nearly the recognition I think he deserves. I mean, this kid comes to play every day, he plays with energy, he plays with passion. And he’s been a very productive player for us. He made some really good plays last year and did some nice things. I just like his leadership; I like everything he stands for. I’m just looking forward to him having a real good year.”
On Jenkins and Geathers at noseguard and tackle, each of them a 350-pounder . . .
“The two big boys. They’re big men who are very athletic. It’s very rare that you can find guys who are that big who can move the way they move. God was good to them when they got in the line for talent.”
On Smith, the junior defensive end from Atlanta, and Thornton, of Stone Mountain . . .
“I think Garrison might have had the best spring of any of them. He’s coming on like gangbusters. I think he has a chance to really put his mark on that position. And I thought Mike had a good spring, too. He really did. Mike can play.”
On Washington, Drew and Bailey, each making the conversion from outside linebacker to end, or 5-technique tackle:
“Cornelius is adjusting to playing inside, which is different for him. But he’s bought into it and he’s adjusting to it and I think he’ll continue to improve and eventually be a different type of change-up guy in there. . . .
“I think Ray Drew’s going to be really good. Have you looked at how big he is? He’s 280 pounds. [Moving to defensive tackle] was not a negative thing at all; I hope people understand that. He saw it himself. It is what it is. Ray could’ve sat around and starved himself, but it wasn’t going to happen. He’s going to be a 300-pounder; that’s what God intended him to be. Ain’t nothing he can do about it. Next year he’ll probably play at about 290 and the next year he’ll probably be 300. That’s what his body is built for. Him moving in there is not a negative. In a 3-4, that’s just where he needs to be. In a 4-3, he could be a defensive end. He’s a good 5-technique tackle. He’s a great athlete. He’s going to be fine. . . .
“Same thing with Sterling Bailey. That’s what people have to understand. Those are guys who are very athletic at those positions. Sterling’s like 285. Of course he’s coming off that [foot surgery], but he’s a great athlete, too.”
Garner stops short of predicting greatness for this group. But he’s certainly excited about the possibilities.
“They’re a great group of young men,” he said. “I’m eager to see what they can do.”

For all my fellow GT fans that like to play the “Academics Card” every time an article appears talking about Talent at UGA or another College.
Remember this, GT vigorously Recruited, Garrison Smith, Mike Thornton, Ray Drew, and Sterling Bailey, and they were all Academic Qualifiers for GT.
If we sign half of those guys or even just one of them, mainly Garrison Smith whose brother graduated from GT, we strengthen our FB program and weaken UGA’s at the same time.
This is why most BCS-level HCs say that Recruiting is directly related to 80% of your success as a BCS-Level HC.
CPJ will never be a great Recruiter for 4 or 5 years in a row.
Ergo, GT will never win consistently vs. UGA or vs. “tough teams”.

Very encouraging to even get mention with the 2000 D-line. I hope he’s correct in his assessments. Looking at them from past production, ability and prospective there really is no reason they shouldn’t be the premier defensive front in 2012

yes we know…WE ALL KNOW THE DEFENSE WILL BE GOOD!! What about the Offense?? What about the special teams? what about Bobo being able to change and roll with the punches? We have a good set of RB’s now. and loaded with weapons to throw to…Will we use them? Will we use them at the right time? Will Murray understand that you can do it all, and sometimes you have to go 3 and out (better than trying to force it and turning it over) ?? How about our kickers? will 30 yard attemps be good? So many questions..so few answers…I hope the S&C has built the guys up more as well..gotta have gas in the tank in the 4th…I also hope the players don’t read anything about ranking or tallent..but read everything Cry baby Steve of the chickens said, and make him cry more this year! All valid points you raise. To which no one knows the answer. However, for your consumption, Bama and LSU have proven over the last 4 years that prolific offenses do not make the difference that do prolific defenses. I have hope but little else that CMR and CMB will show us much more than the milktoast offense we’re already familiar with. There are more horses in the backfield. That will be an improvement over last year but not the end all I am afraid.

Very good Georgia DL…with plenty of depth……but
Florida counters that DL with Jonathan Bullard, Sharrif Floyd, Omar Hunter, Dominque Ealey, Leon Orr, Larentree McCray, Ronald Powell (when he returns from injury at mid season) and others…..no way I trade those for yours….and I am sure all Dawg fans feel the same way about yours.
P.S. NCAA 13 has rated Florida’s overall defense higher (better) than Georgia’s overall defense. The Florida secondary this year will be second to none in the country, and the LBs are terriffic as well. Everything for Florida rides on the development of Driskett and Brissett. Should be interesting to watch. The SEC East is going to be tough this year……and much, much improved.

Your guys have talent but lack character or production. They get in trouble off the field and they really got handled in games during the season. Jenkins will be a top 10 pick, Kwame will go first round also. Abry will go under the radar but will be at least a 3rd rounder. Didn’t see that class of the SEC East is the LSU (second half) or the Michigan State (complete game) games. I did see Florida’s defense dominate FSU’s offense and Ohio State’s offense….while absolutely not having any offensive support at all from the Gator offense. They will get that support this year….and the D will be even better. Time will tell, of course, but I think Florida, not Georgia, will have the class D in the East……and no one will have a defense as good as LSU…in the in SEC…or in the nation. Not Georgia. Not Florida. Not SC. Not Bama……and not So Cal either.

I’m liking the looks of our D line, that’s where it all starts. And I’m liking the quality depth we’ll have there. Nothing at all wrong with having a Ray Drew at end. He won’t have as much room, but he can still beat his man and create pressure up the middle. Very few OLs will be able to block these boys without committing extra players against them.
We saw in the SECCG how solid our starters have become, but it’s depth like this that will enable us to go for 4 quarters against the best.

Since you seem to be a guy who follws college football, surely your KNOWledge of how that game will pan out is a lot deeper than you reading some place that we had a few secondary players in our rotation sitting it out. Right?
And exploiting our secondary hardly equates to our defense staying on the field longer, does it?. That’s not even the logical conclusion. Actually, it’s the opposite.

The defensive tackle was rated as a three star recruit by Rivals.com and receives offers from Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami (FL), Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. Jafar Mann also goes by @jayruu_uf on Twitter and posted this ill advised photo on Instagram. The photo contained possible plans for “bottles, blunts, music, and *******!” and listed an address for something that was probably taking place on June 8th. We don’t know if he was the one to type the note and just because they discuss these topics doesn’t mean he is partaking in them. So . . . I read Chip’s blog (UGA Sports, by the way), then scan over the comments. I had to back out and go back to Chip’s article to make sure it is about UGA.
First, Tampa Gator comes on the playground to say his daddy is stronger than ours… I mean, UF’s D-line is better than ours – and he knows this in June.
Then, geez, now we got an obnoxious fsu fan on here too? And suprise, his DL is better than ours too. The silver lining is Beast of the East gets distracted by the seminole, and forgets to insult UGA.
Well welcome all, and sure sorry to hear there are no online blogs for Florida colleges so you can brag to you own fans . . .

Glad to hear that Garner feels our defensive line is that good because the opponents offensive line will have their hands full which will let our great linebackers and other defensive backs blitz and be effective the whole game. I will be patient and try to explain how recruiting works. If this isn’t enough detail, let me know and I will kindly try to elaborate.
Recruiting is a mutual thing. First a school has to offer, then the recruit has to accept. If either of these parts are omitted, there is no deal. So when you refer to Georgia “allowing these in-state studs to leave,” surely you are not suggesting they should be forcibly enrolled at UGA.
Regarding Theus, he was more highly rated than Greene, although UGA wanted both and offered Greene (see above about how this works).
Some of the examples you like to quote of UGA “misses” become obvious after time. Notice you left off one of your usual examples, after some problems with the law. Also one of your examples is doubtful to be admitted to his school of choice.
As to Devine, don’t know you knew Georgia recruited him. They were not going to offer a package deal with his teammate however, Tech did, good for the Jackets, got some quality talent.
This is shaping up as the nation’s #1 offensive line haul for 2013 if we land Tunsil. If not, it is still an excellent group that will meet needs.

The D line is strong, and the D line is the heart of the defense. The LB’s are strong and deep also, especially if Ogletree’s suspension is only for the first game. The front seven can take a lot of pressure off the D backs, which is a good thing with the suspensions. Again, Smith’s suspension may be only one game. BTW, here in Southwest Ga there is very little hatred for the ‘Noles. Maybe among the Tech fans, but too many local boys have played for FSU for us to hate them, and Bowden was liked by the Dawg fans down here. You know, he kind of talks like us. He spoke at the FCA meeting in Albany and was well received by both ‘Nole and Dawg.

Audit: Ga. Tech professor using school trips for sexual escapades…..
ATLANTA —
State authorities want to know if a prominent Georgia Tech professor was using university trips for sexual escapades.
Georgia Tech paid Professor Michael Meyer a big salary, and records show he spent nearly $100,000 on state travel in the most recent four years.
Meyer is a former chairman of Georgia Tech’s department of civil engineering and an internationally recognized expert on urban transportation.
But sexually suggestive emails written while Professor Meyer was traveling for Georgia Tech caught the attention of Georgia Tech’s legal office, which called in the auditors.
One of the references in it is to a 2011 trip that Meyer took to Bangkok, Thailand and there’s a specific reference to the Nana hotel.
The report said it’s known for being right next to Bangkok’s red light district.
In an email about the trip, Meyer said, “The Nana is everything you said it was….great location!!!!!” He went on to say, “I want to tell you the sex trade is unbelievable. Gorgeous women to stay the night with you for $30 to $40.”
The audit includes a picture of the professor and notes, “Dr. Meyer’s travel expenses certainly give the appearance of thinly veiled vacations.”

If I correctly recall…..Ogeltree plays MLB. Florida has this year’s all-SEC MLB in Joe Bostic. And yes, Joe Bostic is better than the talented Ogeltree right now. So is Jelani Jenkins at OLB. But Jarvis Jones would start at the other OLB position for the Gators. Both Bostic and Jenkins have put on major muscle and needed weight under the new S&C coach….and neither has lost of step….very fast. Now…both are big and strong….and very fast. And both will be high draft picks into the NFL this year (Bostic a senior and Jenkins a junior).

Tampa Gator is at it again..
Yeah Florida will be better in 2012 than they were in 2011. They could not get much worse. The defense at Florida was never the problem, being on the field too long WAS a problem because the offense was so horrific.
I would not go as far over the top as TG did and say their DB’s will as good as anyone in the country or the SEC, however they will be decent early in games, but if the defense has to be on the field for most of the game due to the offense then life will be very long for the Gator fans.
The gators should compete in every game and will make a run at the SEC East, but they need to improve alot and will need to find a fullback or big back who can tote the rock to compete reqularly.
They however will not be in the same league as LSU or Alabama but they have the same or better overall talent as UGA or USC, Tennessee.

This is a Championship defense. We should be able to compete nationally with a Defense like that. However, until we do the small things and all the intangibles, we will be in the same position. Murray has to take care of the ball and not force it. He has done that numerous times in his career. We need to run power up middle and use our speed with our new backs to mix things up. In the past we have been so predictable and that has been our achilles heel. I think we will turn the corner this year and Malcome Mitchell will be 2012’s Champ Bailey.

TG,
You must be drunk or stoned today. There is no way UF’s depth on the d-line will hold up this year. Powell will not be back at all until mid-season, and he won’t be full strength until the end of the year at best. Omar Hunter is 5′11 and quick, but he is only a 2-down player. I think I recall that Easley tore up his knee late last year. Who’s to say he is full strength until mid-season. I believe Bullard is a true freshman. Floyd is the real deal, but he is your only quality, experienced d-lineman who can play.
UGA’s D-line is full of mature, grown MEN. You know enough about the SEC to know that it’s not about your starters. It’s about quality depth, which UF does NOT have.

Yes, the same team who has been ranked in the Top 10, Pre-season No.1, Pre- Season Top 15, Pre-Season Top 25 ONLY to go backwards, not beat a Top 25 ranked team, and loses any game that really means anything of importance. Yet once again Summer SEC Champs, Summer BCS Team, Summer All Everything.
No one thinks the talent is not on the campus at UGA, they are loaded, but no outside of Georgia or UGA fans has any confidence that CMR and his staff are able to win the big games to get themselves into the big boy talk. If CMR does not do it this year with all this talent, then he will not make it and the UGA fans should revolt instead of making excuses for the losses.

This Defense will measure up to the D’s of Bama & Lsu. It could be the BEST of all D’s at UGA. Speaking from front to middle to the rear. They will be 2 deep at every position & 3 in some. Their DL has some big men who have some big-time talent. At linebacker, it certainly doesn’t hurt that the best LB in the country in Jarvis Jones is rushing the passer from his OLB position. This front seven will try and prove they are tops in the country. [AJC] [...]

I for one do not think that UF will be down. I have always said that there is too much talent over there. However, the reason why I feel that UGA should be favored in that game this year is that our offense is just a TD better than UF’s. Both defenses will be very good.
everyone loves to say that UGA has an easy schedule coming up. If you look at it that they don’t play Bama or LSU and that’s it, then that would be correct. However, for those that think UF & Auburn are going to be push overs this year, I have swamp to sell you in the Mojave desert. They will be tough!
Sleepers will be UT & Vandy. They won’t be patsies. It’s really not as easy of a schedule overall than what most people think. @Mizzou, @So. Car. @ JAX @ Auburn. How is that easy?
For those that want to jump on this, I’m not saying it’s the hardest schedule in the SEC, only that it’s not as easy as many believe it is. That’s why I think UGA loses 2 games min. this year.
Just my opinion!

@UGA Insider – I don’t think they will be 9 to 10 game winners. I just don’t think they will be the pushovers as most perceive. If our LB’s get in in Bray’s face he will melt like a cheap suit.
@Lex – I’d be surprised if SC falls off that much. If somehow, we can take care of business in Columbia (big if), then that could be a possibility because Spurrier hates losing to UGA and every time he does the season turns to crap afterwards.
UF is the sleeper this year! If their offense finds a grove with that defense they will be very tough.

@TG – Usually takes a couple years for the offense to gel unto a new OC. Of course that’s usually and not always the rule of thumb. I like UF’s chances. I hate it that everyone looks at UGA and So. Car. in the east. When no one in the past looked at UF that’s when they come up and get you.

As someone already mentioned, Alabama and LSU have shown us that defenses win championships. To all UGA fans, look how far we have coem since the Willy Martinez defenses. Grantham has done a heck of a job and has us back to being relevant again. The Oline and special teams should be our only concern.

In 1974, the Atlanta Falcons had the best defense in the NFL! For a 14 game schedule, they gave set the all-time record , for a 14 game schedule by allowing the fewest points. They only gave up 127 points all year, and they had 27 interceptions that year. They were led by DC Jerry Glanville and were called the Gritz Blitz! The sad thing was the Falcons only had a 7-7 record that year! Can you imagine how bad their offense was?

Just because some SEC east teams have gone through a transition, doesnt mean it’ll always be a lesser division. I remember for the longest Sec West wasnt that strong, only LSU and Auburn were giving teams a hard time. Bama wasnt even an after thought. But blaming the Dawgs for having an easy schedule…it complete nonsense. Not our fault teams are going through coaching changes. Hell, Bama had the easiest schedule last season…outside of LSU. And no Arky doesnt get any love yet.
Florida did a great job with the Pease hire..and their defense is going to be legit. Dawgs still have alot to prove, mainly with consistency.
As for this FSU talk, great recruiting, alotta talent…but havent seen any substance on the field to think they’ve turned the corner quite yet. Started last year with all the talk about being a darkhorse for a NC. But after the back to back losses, they were never mentioned again. Havent seen any resilience established in them as of yet. I am a diehard SEC and Georgia fan but I am so sick and angry not having 4 key defensive starters for the Mizzou HOME game. It will be their first SEC home game at that. They have developed good talent, have an athletic QB that can run in their spread offense. They also picked up the nations top high school receiver to boot. IF we can get by Mizzou and get the DB’s back I feel we can have a banner year. Just makes me sick that these young men chose stupidity over the team, again. Mizzou plays the run well, so the O-Line better be ready and Murray better have his A game on to throw the ball around. Go Dawgs!

Florida will run the same plays that Weis brought to Florida. Peese is adapting to the offense, not the players to Peese. What Peese has done is incorporate more motion into last year’s offense, as he thought the offense was too predicable. Boise confused teams with their motion, as Peese intends to incorporate that confusing for the opposing teams into Weis’ offense. The Florida players love it already. They will run one play with several different sets and different types of motion so the opposing team will have more difficulty predicting a certain type of play is about to be run. The Florida defensive players said after the spring game that they had difficulty recognizing plays and responding to them. It has worked for Boise, and I hope it works this year for the Gators. Much, as I have stated, depends on the play of Driskell and/or Brissett. I think the Gators are going to be the surprise team in the SEC this year. Their defense is going to be very, very good.

Michigan State moved the ball at will against Georgia in the second half of the bowl game. I watched the replay of the game…..and that was obvious. The MSU QB picked Georiga apart in that second half….as Georgia was worn down by a very big and strong MSU OL. Georgia’s defense should be stronger this year as a result of a lot of the redshirt freshmen being ready now to contribute in a significant way…..allowing the starters on defense to get some rest during games.

So they “dominated” so bad that they would have only lost by 10, without our mistakes.

I believe he was 15/27, and 2 ints, in that second half. That’s what they call “picked apart” is it?

Yeah MSU dominated UGA about how we dominated the Gators in JAX last year then. The Gators might not win another one in the series for three years.TampaGator I know you don’t really believe the Gators are a true SEC contender this season.MAYBE next year but not 2012.

IDK TampaGator…Folks think we might have a tough time with Mizzo but I don’t think you guys get by Texas A&M in week two. That is going to be the shocking early season upset in the East. After losing to LSU and SC I see you guys coming in to the WLOCP with 3 losses.

The biggest difference at Georgia from last year will be we will have a running game. Crowell couldn’t do it all as a Freshman and this year Malcombs attitude is right and will be giving it his all to get playing time , Crowell will show last year was no fluke and the maturity difference will be obvious from the first game. Marshall and Gurly will be the depth that wasn’t there last year. Murray will get a lot of help this year. After the Missouri game we will know a lot. Sure wish we were at full strength for that game.
And who is going to block for these 4 and 5 star High School All Americans? The UGA O-L was horrible last year and will be worse this year. Murray will be running for his life and the tackles for loss will add up……then you keep that UGA defense( which will be good) on the field too long in big games and the losses will come a little easier….just saying.

The UGA OL is going to be the same it has been over the 11 years of CMR’s tenure…good enough to get the job done

The O-line was not “horrible” last year. We have all seen horrible lines over the years, here and others. This wasn’t that. They were insufficient at a couple of positions compounded by very little depth. That’s a problem when we faced the bigger, faster, Dlines. But “horrible” doesn’t accomplish what they DID do. And 5′6″ RB didn’t really help the perception.
Not sure what you base being worse on this year either. They are deeper in numbers and return several starters. I actually think they are more settled as far as who will be in there, than some of the switching they did last year. Not much better, or about the same would be a more logical conclusion.Or even calling it a ?? would be true.

And irrespective on how good Coach Friend really is, any position coach is going to be a lot more comfortable in his second year.

You think the UGA OL was Good? Fair? Average? They were pourous at best and the scrambling, negative plays big game losses prove it.
KEEP FOOLING YOURSELF!

@Bigboy…..
Domination is outscoring another team 33 to 14. And yes, that is what mighty Michigan State did….. scored 33 points on the Dawg defense in the second half including overtime. That is NOT good defense. That is just the truth. Michigan State blocked Georgia’s defensive line in the second half and picked apart the Dawg secondary. Georgia scored aroun 24 (if I remember) on the Gator defense the entire game…..and I know at least 14 of those points came after a very short drive at the end of the first half after a Rainey fumble and on a miracle 4th down TD pass after another Gator turnover. Hardly the same kind of domination.
@SouthGeorgiaDawg….
Texas A&M will be under a new system and a new QB and a new coach. And none of them will have seen a defense like what the Gators will bring to show the 12th man. I do not see them upsetting the Gators. And I have not checked the schedule, but Florida generally plays South Carolina after the JAX game. And yes, I believe the Gators will lose to LSU down there. So would Georgia.

This defense will be good as advertise. The only thing that concern me is but guys like Ray Drew in the inside. Look at Hightower from bama he weighed about 270 at LB or Upshaw he weighed 290. 3-4 sceme suppose to have big inside and outside linebackers this means they can take on blockers. WoW UGA get a clue! Only big line backer we got now is J. Jones and Tree the others are 230 pounds at best.

9-3. I wouldn’t be surprised by a Missouri loss. Sorta like Boise State last year and Oklahoma State the year before.
