Performance bonuses will be doubled in (still unfinished) Richt contract

GREENSBORO, Ga. — We’ll have a full story later, but here are the quick highlights from this morning’s UGA Athletic Association board of directors meeting at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation:

  • UGA President Michael Adams and athletic director Greg McGarity said the contract extensions still are not completed with head football coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.  McGarity did say for the first time that Richt’s new contract will keep his salary “basically the same” — about $2.8 million per year — as his current deal but that the incentive bonuses, for things such as winning SEC and national championships, will be doubled as a way of “rewarding excellence.”  As previously disclosed, three years will be added to Richt’s contract, extending it through 2016, and two years to Grantham’s, extending it through 2014.   McGarity said again that there are no major unresolved issues with the contracts. Adams attributed the delays to routine legal work.
  • McGarity said during a break in the meeting that baseball coach David Perno definitely will be back next season as the Bulldogs’ coach.
  • The board approved an Athletic Association budget of $92.1 million for fiscal year 2013, up from $90 million this year.
  • The board approved spending $2.73 million on several facilities projects. These include improvements to the landscape beyond the outfield fences at Foley Field; upgrading the scoreboards at the baseball, softball and soccer stadiums to gain more video capability; and reworking Gate 10 at Sanford Stadium. The $2.73 million also includes funds to begin design work on a possible eventual renovation of the main entrance, concourse and press box at Foley Field; that project, if eventually undertaken, probably would cost around $10 million.
  • It was reported to the board that the Athletic Association had another strong year financially and will add about $2 million to its reserve funds, which now are above $70 million.
  • More to come later this afternoon.

I hate to say it but Perno has to go. We need more leadership on the field and a better politician off field to influence upgrades to Foley. Foley is terrible compared to LSU, arkansas, etc…

We are looking forward to the Tide coming to Death Valley. Unless one of the 2 teams is a disappointment, I don’t see how either side can be confident of a win right now.

Doggy Style – Foley Field is getting rennovations done. Coach Perno deserves to stay. It shouldn’t even be an issue. He has been through more in the last two years than any coach in the country with two of his players that he brought to UGA being paralyzed. I don’t remember UGA baseball being much other than 1990, years with Coach Polk and the years with Coach Perno. Go Coach Perno and Dawgs.

I love how all these redneck Bama fans crow and strut around (insert USCe fans here as well since it’s convenient) as if they actually had anything to do with that teams success. Forget Kool-aid drinkers (a term I hate actually.) These guys obviously drink out of the hose. Guess we’re all supposed to be jealous…

[...] Mark Richt’s contract is still unfinished but details emerge. Richt’s base salary of $2.8 million is basically the same as it has been; however, incentive bonuses are doubled. I actually really like this because they are rewarding him for on-the-field success. I’m all about rewarding for success, and I’m quite sure Richt was instrumental in this as well. Three years will be added to his contract, extending him through 2016. DC Todd Grantham received a two-year extension through 2014. [AJC] [...]

McGarity is SUCH A VEGETABLE. PAY RICHT MORE THAN SPURRIER AND HE”LL SHOW HIS APPRECIATION BY KICKING SOME BUTT. ATTEMPTING TO MANIPULATE HIM WITH PERFORMANCE BONUSES DOESN”T FIT RICHT’S PERSONALITY AND IN FACT, IS SOMEWHAT INSULTING. JUST PROVES MCGARITY AND UGA DON’T REALLY WANT TO GET THERE. LIKE JOE T, MIKE BOBO AND ANY OTHER FORMER UGA PLAYER INVOLVED WITH THE PROGRAM, MCGARITY LACKS THE QUALIFICATIOS FOR THE POSITION HE HOLDS.

It’s always been clear that CMR is not overly concerned about his paycheck. He gets paid enough to keep his family comfortable; works where he wants to work; does what he wants to do; gives A LOT of money to charity. Doubling the performance bonuses are the absolute right way to handle the current situation. CMR’s job was in jeopardy at the beginning of 2011 season, no doubt. He pulled it out. That doesn’t mean he gets a huge reward in salary. He can keep pat until he can prove that he really can get over that “SEC East Champ” hurdle again. At the end of this new contract, if he’s gotten over those hurdles, watch his salary jump; if not, watch UGA let him go.

Game Changer

@altamaha

Damon Evans was a puppet for Adams but I liked his way of handling alum letters and scheduling:

As a true competitior Evans understood that playing out of conference big game west of the Mississippi was very important for UGA on a national level. McGarity and the blue hairs do not and for this we will never get respected anytime soon.

Evans always copied the Head Coach alum emails and letters and when necessary for a response expected such from the coach, if that coach did not respond additional actions were taken. Evans would have made major changes with the staffs by now but McGarity would rather make examples out of ( girl sports head coaches ), something 99% of UGA fans dont follow. It is very disheartening to read about the AD meetings and more of the same is promoted. I guess a 5th place finish in SEC football, 11th place in SEC basketball, 8th place in SEC baseball, each out of 12 total teams is a big success. One thing is for sure, 2012 / 2013 will be an improvement because no way to go lower or is there?

Brainiac, your real handle should be “loser” as you are so obsessed with Alabama while avoiding the fact that UGA cannot and will not win a BCS title under Richt. You are so blind to the fact that UGA is a second tier program in the standards of winning and Championships it hurts you to face reality.

What UGA needs is a better fan base. I’m an alumus who lives 200 miles from Athens yet I go to basketball and baseball games on a regular basis. They are as fun as football without all the negatives such as parking, crowds, etc. Fox can’t recruit because the Stege is half empty. I know. I know. ” I would go if we were good”. No, UGA fans would go if we were good, playing Kentucky, had good tickets, and there was nothing else going on that weekend. We suck as fans. The football is all about the tailgating. We show up after kickoff and leave early to starting drinking again. Recruits notice this especially when they visit other campuses and compare the experiences. We are our own worst enemy.

Second verse, same as the first. Give Richt a contract extension with no raise, and it will make no difference in his performance. Richt is gonna disappoint Georgia fans one more time. Some won’t let him fool them again. Has Richt changed? No, he’s the same coach, but now in addition to beating Spurrier(or getting his shirt handed to him by Spurrier(again), he has Saban and Miles. In his earlier success years they were not yet established. True, the latter two aren’t on the 2012 schedule, but either will be in Atlanta at season’s end. No amount of majic pixie dust and/or wishful thinking will suddenly turn the mediocre Richt into a eventual coaching genius. And, wait for the Missouri ambush and shoddy showings on a cupcake schedule, and Richt will show again why he is Richt, with his best work behind him.

UGA should have extended Grantham’s contract to 2016 to match Richt’s contract. Nick, the “gnome” gets $6 mil a year now. LSU is rated over Bummer in the west – there is one big “if” however. Muttenbubba has to quit molesting the girls… as there is no QB behind him that has ever played a down of college football. Duh’Rick has had more off field issues but they have been swept under the rug at Tick Hound “U”….. since Doody is on the hot seat. The only way to get rid of the”gnome” is to beat him on the field and he will take the next bus out of town.
