Performance bonuses will be doubled in (still unfinished) Richt contract

GREENSBORO, Ga. — We’ll have a full story later, but here are the quick highlights from this morning’s UGA Athletic Association board of directors meeting at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation:

  • UGA President Michael Adams and athletic director Greg McGarity said the contract extensions still are not completed with head football coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.  McGarity did say for the first time that Richt’s new contract will keep his salary “basically the same” — about $2.8 million per year — as his current deal but that the incentive bonuses, for things such as winning SEC and national championships, will be doubled as a way of “rewarding excellence.”  As previously disclosed, three years will be added to Richt’s contract, extending it through 2016, and two years to Grantham’s, extending it through 2014.   McGarity said again that there are no major unresolved issues with the contracts. Adams attributed the delays to routine legal work.
  • McGarity said during a break in the meeting that baseball coach David Perno definitely will be back next season as the Bulldogs’ coach.
  • The board approved an Athletic Association budget of $92.1 million for fiscal year 2013, up from $90 million this year.
  • The board approved spending $2.73 million on several facilities projects. These include improvements to the landscape beyond the outfield fences at Foley Field; upgrading the scoreboards at the baseball, softball and soccer stadiums to gain more video capability; and reworking Gate 10 at Sanford Stadium. The $2.73 million also includes funds to begin design work on a possible eventual renovation of the main entrance, concourse and press box at Foley Field; that project, if eventually undertaken, probably would cost around $10 million.
  • It was reported to the board that the Athletic Association had another strong year financially and will add about $2 million to its reserve funds, which now are above $70 million.
  • More to come later this afternoon.

This is good news! I think all coaches should have a performance clause in their contract! I hope this will inspire CMR and Grantham to do a better job. The DAWGS are on the move and should show improvement over last season if they are to compete with Ala. and LSU. It’s time to hunker down. A winning team will attract good players and the state of Georgia is blessed with an abundance with all too many slipping away! This needs to stop! GO DAWGS!!

Are you kidding me? Muschamp makes more than Mark Richt? What an insult to the 10th winningest coach in the NCAA with over 5 years experience.

Does AD McGarity understand if you keep UNDERPAYING your STAFF, they will LEAVE, like 100% of Joe T’s assistants did? Richt won 10 games, won the East, had a great recruiting year, for what? to be the 7th highest paid guy in the conference?

I favor performance incentives. Extra money is a definite motivator.

Laker

McGarity has set Richt up to achieve great things

Weak OOC schedule
SEC schedule excludes Bama and LSU(I know GM did not do that)

The set up is there for 11-1 or 12-0 and a return to ATL

That’s why no raise with heavy performance incentives

No more excuses time in Athens

Coach Paul Johnson deserves to be paid more than Coach Helen Hunt.

After all, Coach Johnson is THE New Sheriff in Town.

We WILL Run This State, beginning in November in that Cesspool up north.

I agree with DIL 100%. CMR and UGA have the perfect set-up this year for a good run and it’s put up or shut up time in Athens. I love CMR and the Dawgs and I hope they can do it, but only time will tell.

Dawg 38, is it Perno’s fault that a lot of the returning seniors had subpar years and that the SEC’s leading closer from last year missed the entire season with an injury? Granted, we need to find a way to improve our power, but the pitching and defense has greatly improved the last two seasons. I am like everybody else who follows the Diamond Dawgs, disapointed that the year ended like it did especially with all the expectations, but the SEC is tough. Only two teams in the SEC had combined winning records over the last two years is LSU and FL. If we would have not lost the last game of they year against AL, we would have as well. I have had season tickets for 11 years at baseball and only missed three home games this year. So I think I qualify as someone who cares.

We do a good job recruiting, but we have to attract (and keep) a good o-line. I know I harp on this but LSU, ‘Bama, and Boise State whipped us up front, and good!! This is why we cannot run the ball against the good teams, and why our pass protection at crunch time is below average at best. Kudo’s to coaches, but remember…..no matter how many super stars you get, until we get the hosses up front we will beat the bad teams and lose to the good ones. The game is, was, and always shall be won in the trenches, and we need to find (and keep) some good ones, or all these contracts, bonus additions, etc. will be worthless! Watch closely, those who have ever played the game, and see what I mean. Yeah, we got one or two in the pros, but as a unit our line is BEHIND the uppet tier teams. Untill we recognize and address that, we will have a decent record, but WILL NOT be on the LSU or Bama level! Bring ‘em in, coach ‘em up, and watch what heppens!

OUR PITCHING IS NOT VERY GOOD , TAKE AWAY THE WOODS KIDS AND WE ARE REALLY SUBPAR, WE STRUGGLED IN MID WEEK GAMES. WE CANT THROW ANYONE OUT ON THE BASES, OUR BEST CATCHER HAS TO HAVE TJ BECAUSE WE HAD HIM IN THE PEN THROWING BECAUSE OUR STAFF WAS SO WEAK. THE SEC IS TOUGH BUT OTHERS SEEM TO BE ABLE TO COMPETE. How is Perno not in trouble? We lose 2 out of 3 to the worst team in the SEC on the last weekend, then lose two straight in the tourney. It is pathetic..apparantly no one cares abot baseball at the UGA AD.

And the landscaping improvments to foley field..that is just another way of saying they are going to plant trees to block the view green house and the brick house views..hoping that those crowds will not gather there any more. Cant have that devil beer drinking going on. Awful.

I guess the scenery around Athens does get pretty mundane day in and day out. Lets run down to Reynolds plantation where water is $5 a bottle. And a beer, well I can’t afford a beer there! We just got beat in baseball by the worst team in the field. Therefore proving we are the worst team in the field. Why bring Perno back?

LOVE IT!! I have heard that bonuses would make him one of the highest paid coaches if he wins SEC a NC. I’m in sales, if I want a raise I sell more. If you wanna make more money…win more games and win the BIG games. But it shows about CMR what those that know him, already know. He is a class act and it’s not about money. He loves UGA and wants to win at UGA. Also from what I’ve heard alot of the staff ( Todd G. especially ) has circled the USC chicken game. Dome bound LSU/UGA II GO DAWGS!!! GATA

For starters, I couldn’t care any less about baseball, so Perno can stay, go, whatever…. I am glad that there are some performance clauses in Richt’s contract, as they should be in all coaches contracts. Enough with the 3, 4 and 5 million $$ contracts and let them earn their money with results. But then again, that would make the cheating and underhanded practices skyrocket because it would only be about “win, baby, win” and nothing else. You want more money? Then produce with results. The coaching change merry go round would be spinning like a top because there would be no job security for coaches unless they are winning 10+ games a year. Whichever way you choose….pick your poison.

The 2013 season will test Mark’s coaching ( yes, I know he;s proven, but the mountain top has been reached and the train has been in decline, and please don’t bring up last year as a success. It wasn’t)
He’ll have a very young team in 13 with a lot harder schedule.

Good commit at 3:38. I agree I heard Richt gives away 1 million a year to charities. He just wants to stay at Georgia. But McGarity is going to make him earn the right to stay , as it should be. Grantham deserves a raise and I hope he gets a good one plus incentives.I think this years defense will be the standouts of the SEC.
But, South Carolina will have a great defense also and a very good Quarterback which will make the Georgia – South Carolina game a great game. The biggest question mark will be whether Lattimore will be able to come back from his ACL and be dominate like he was before the injury.
