Vince Dooley: ‘I look forward to Bulldog Nation uniting under new leadership’

ATHENS – I just returned a short time ago from the UGA Chapel where Dr. Michael Adams’ announced he was retiring as the University of Georgia’s president after 15 years. It was a very brief and matter-of-fact affair where Adams essentially read from a prepared statement that he had handed out to reporters beforehand, greeted well wishers at the end and took questions for about five minutes.

One of the first calls I made afterward was to former Georgia football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley. Clearly Coach Dooley was expecting some calls as he spoke as though he might be reading from a prepared statement. Not surprisingly, he rebuffed repeated attempts to get him to engage in the his controversial relationship with Adams, who refused to extend his contract in 2003 and essentially forced Dooley into retirement.

Here’s what Dooley said/read:

“First of all, I commend President Adams on his retirement, his service and his contributions to the University of Georgia. I do believe it is time for a change and I look forward to the Bulldog Nation uniting under new leadership in the near future.”

I quickly followed by asking Dooley if he felt the “Bulldog Nation” — aka athletic association supporters — was divided under Adams’ leadership.

“I can’t say that,” he said, stepping away from script for just a moment. “Regardless of the situation, I think new leadership would be good. But I’m going to stick with my statement.”

I asked Dooley if he had some ideas of what type of leader the next president should be. He recently profiled every president in his new book, “History and Reminiscences of the University of Georgia.”

“I really don’t want to get into anything like that,” Dooley said. “If you look at the history of presidents, as you change presidents there’s a sense of renewal and unification under new leadership.”

Dooley did intimate that he thought the 13-month period before Adams’ actual retirement was excessively long. But otherwise he stayed clear of criticizing the man or the process.

Asked what he thought Adams’ legacy would be regarding athletics, Dooley let loose a hardy laugh. “I’m not going to say anymore publically,” he said.

Honestly I think they’re both a couple of egomaniacs. Both have done good things for UGA, and both have their personality and character flaws. Dooley wasn’t the beloved figure amongst his former players that everyone tries to make him out to be. I know a couple of his former players personally, and both had very tempestuous relationships with him. That being said, he is UGA’s greatest coach, and Adams could have saved himself a lot of trouble by letting him stay another year or two. I mean who cares? It’s not like Damon Evans turned out to be that great of an AD in the final analysis. Dooley wasn’t a phenomenal AD, but he wasn’t horrible either, so why force him out? I don’t understand leaders who force guys out just so they can have ” their guy” in there. If the old guard sucks, then yes its time for a change. But if the guy is doing his job, why push him out? Just a whole bunch of BS all the way around.

It is conceivable that one’s career mobility could include going from UGA President to Masters Chairman, however, I think the reverse of that statement would be highly unlikely.

UGA needs an academic visionary to pick up where Dr. Adams will leave off. Someone with fresh perspective, bold ideas, the know how to get things done, and enough sense to keep his/her mitts off the athletic programs and let the AD do his job.

Vince will always be a gentleman . . . even when discussing that arrogant twit Michael Adams. Yes the University has moved forward under Adams but it could have done much more with much less division if he possessed just half the class of our esteemed ex-athletic director and head coach. It was a power play pure and simple to move Dooley out quicker than he would have preferred and it was all so unnecessary the way he treated him. A university should not be run like a Fortune 500 corporation or a third world dictatorship and if Herr Adams had checked he ego at the arch, a great deal more might have been possible and we might be celebrating one of greatest administrations in the history of the university. There are two ways to get things done . . . autocratically or cooperatively. Adams chose the former and alienated a large portion of those with UGA ties. So I will lift my cup high to celebrate his retirement and wish only he would go right now! Ding dong, the SOB is almost gone! Goodbye and good riddance!

Both Coach Dooley and Dr. Adams have served the University well in many ways.
The unfortunate rivalry between athletics and the University as a whole should dimimish over time
with enlightened new leadership.
Neither gentleman personifies UGA .
We should always remember that it was a unanimous Board Of Regents who truly called the shots.I believe that they felt that the athletic program generally was much too influential in the overall scope of the mission of the University and needed to be reigned in and relegated to its proper role.
To the extent that Coach Dooley was the longtime head of the Athletic Department that change would have been rendered ,in their collective mindset, much more difficult.
That being said “Long live UGA”. May it continue to prosper and thrive.

Probably would have lost it also, if it hadn’t been for Bobby Petrino under the bleachers with a cheerleader. Heck, even UGA with Ray Goff beat the Buckeyes in the 93 Citrus Bowl. The 2nd change is to get the Athens Police to back off and treat the alumni/fans with respect, not harrass them as soon as they open their trunks and wallets. These are the people that bring spend millions every saturday in the fall. Time to let the fans enjoy their trips to Athens. I am a big UGA football fan. But I do realize that there is a big separation between the University’s mission and that of the Athletic Dept. All in all, Adams left the football team alone until it started embarrassing the school or tried to run over the school as a whole. So his legacy should be judged by the school’s educational performance, not W-L records. Face it, Dooley had too much power toward the end. And we have seen repeatedly where that leads.

Can someone explain to me how Dooley acting as if bulldog nation is devided is “classy” on Dooleys part? Why do people feel Dooley is classy? I don’t see it. He is a bitter old man in my opinion. Anyone the looks at the big picture will agree that Adams was a very effective president for Georgia. Is the university better off than it was 13 years ago. I would say yes

Sorry but if Dooley were “classy” he would have said Adams did good things for Georgia and I wish him the best. To say bulldog nation is divided and it is time for a change is NOT classy.

Stand up, Dr. Adams…oh, sorry, you are standing up. I agree with Big Time Dawg-You have definitely ruined some family loyalties and legacies in this state, including my own. I also agree with Robdawg re: the Athens police. They harass us donors when all we are doing is walking to the game. You can trace that back to Adams also-everyone would be on campus if he hadnt run us off. God, what a nightmare he has been.

Glad the a-hole is gone – or almost. So in 13 months I can finally start giving to my alma mater again. Every year they call I say the same thing: “I will never give a dime to UGA as long as that arrogant pr*ck Adams is president. And every time I say that the undergrad fund-raiser snickers and says something like “well sir, I’d be lying if I said that I have not heard that before.”

Then folks try to justify Adams’ reign of terror by saying things like “sure Adams was arrogant and had a brusque management style, but look at how many new buildings were built and how much UGA’s academic standing increased under his watch.” That’s like saying, “sure Hitler was evil, but he did build some awesome autobahns.” Or “Saddam may have been a bit harsh in his treatment of the Kurds, but he established an impressive university system.” Michael Adams will never have the respect of older alumni because, as someone from the Left Coast, he actually thought he was so much better than us rednecks.

TROLL IDIOT, wasn’t talking about Bobo. After the 6-7 season of ‘10, McGarity hired someone to take Richt’s “administrative duties,” so “he could focus on just coaching.”

I only use one name, and I fully support the UGA football program, but am critical of Mark Richt from time to time.

Adams did the most importanr thing: he raised huge amounts of money for the academic side of the university and raised academic standards and quality across the board. Whatever he did for athletics was nice, but secondary. As for his management style and goals ~ you can’t please everybody.

How many who have commented on this blog, have ever had the responsibility of Athletic Director or School President. Just wondering since there are so many people who think that these jobs are so simple. I had plenty of leadership roles in my military career, but I doubt at any time I approached the level of complexity of either of these jobs. I suspect I am not alone at this either.

How can a University president who completely divided the alumni have been a GOOD president? I’ve seen exponentially more “Good Riddance…now I can start contributing again” posts than “Sorry to see him leave” posts. Let’s be honest here, the vast majority of the Bulldog nation is thrilled that he’s leaving. I can’t believe the Regents let him stay this long. As for the new president, let’s get the best QUALIFIED candidate out there (NOT Sonny!!!!…he’s liable to tear down Ramsey and put a bass pond in….what an idiot black eye he was for the Republican party I’m very sorry to say). I heard someone mention Condi Rice…she might be good. Billy’s seems like a good guy, but why would he want to leave that piece of heaven on earth in Augusta? Regardless, none of these are probably the BEST candidate available. We’ll see.

My take

Dooley brought instant class to UGA in 63 or 64 when he arrived unknown, beyond Auburn or Mobile, Alabama. He quickly turned UGA into a solid program with early wins over BEAR and MICHIGAN and UGA began to revisit major bowls within three or four years and win the SEC. He made UGA into a solid contender and well respected team.Coached all over America respeted him for his style and his class and his poise.

He was a perfect role model and one time, as a UGA student back in 69, Coach Dooley stopped and chatted with me about my life goals and my GPA, Major, at the cash register of a drug store out on the Lexington Highway. Amazing that 4 or 5 minute interval was to me. He was a busy man and I was a kid. This says it all.

Adams? He is an administrator, a politician and egotist. His leagacy will be fairly well respected BEYOND sports but he will be saddled with the Jim Harrick scandal, as all the sports world back then, knew the guy’s tainted background BUT Adams insisted on hiring Harrick. THAT will be Adams legacy.

GO Dogs.

Evrybody seems to forget that Vince Dooley for years pressured teachers and adminstrators to pass players who were failing classes so they could play.. I guess Mr. Adams could not be bullied… Maybe that is why they couls not get along.

Adams was from?

May 4th, 2012

Someone here suggested that Adams was from the West Coast. I do believe that he grew up in Sandy Springs, Ga and did his undergrad at W Ky U.

Yes, later on in his career ………….he worked at Pepperdine U. but he is not orginally from there. I could certainly be wrong, too.

@My Take.. Who was the AD during Harricks scandle? Who was supposed to oversee what classes Harrick Jr was teaching? Who was not doing his job? Why is it that people want to pin all of that on Adams when Dooley was the AD? Yes Adams may have had an impact on Harrick being hired, but does that give the AD a free pass not to do his job? I don’t think so. Dooley had such an inflated ego he was not doing his job as AD and deserved to be terminated. Even now he must continue to make comments to try to start a fire. The guy (dooley) needs to retire and go away.

Adams did not divide UGA. Dooley did. Dooley is the one the whined about being terminated when he was not doing his job, then fueled the fire. I stand by Adams on that one. Dooley was just a power hungary ego maniac that dared Adams to fired him. Question, when you pick a fight (as dooley did) with the President of the University, who do you think will win?

I will always remember Vince Dooley as the person who denied Erk Russell the chance to become head coach at UGA, Erk went on to win several national championships at Ga Southern, Had it not been for Erk Russell Vince would never have had the success he enjoyed at UGA, Lets hope the new President keeps Vince at arms length, I’m sure things will run much better without Mr. Dooley’s imput.

Adams made some huge gaffes like hiring Harrick as basketball coach. Dooley had his issues too – like hiring the disgraced Damon Evans and Donnan. It was time for Dooley to retire and it’s time for Adams to go. Hopefully we will get a President with good common sense and leadership ability and someone that won’t worry so much about being politically correct.

CHARGING A TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR PARTY FOR HIS SON’S LAW SCHOOL GRADUATION PARTY FOR OPENERS [HE WAS CALLED OUT ON THIS AND HAD TO GIVE IT BACK] WIFE ON PAYROLL. NEPOTISM DESPITE POLICY, AND THE HIRING OF A BASKETBALL COACH WHOSE SON EMBARASSED THE UNIVERSITY AND MADE UGA THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE NATION. READ THE BOOK, IT’S DOCUMENTED THAT AND MUCH MORE. A WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY NEEDS A WORLD CLASS PRESIDENT AND ADAMS NEVER WAS THE MAN AND POLITICS GOT THIM THERE. HELLO COLUMBUS GA?
