UGA football: Some questions answered, others linger for Bulldogs

The best thing about spring for Georgia coach Mark Richt, here jogging off the field after the G-Day Game, is the Bulldogs escaped without a single serious injury. (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)

ATHENS – Georgia wrapped up its spring practice with a surprisingly exciting G-Day Game on April 14, won by the offense-oriented Red team 32-31 over the Black.

But, truthfully, there is really not much anyone can take out of a spring scrimmage. Did the offense look good or was the defense bad, etc.? Georgia coach Mark Richt probably put it all in perspective the best when he talked this week about the Bulldogs’ spring accomplishments.

“The most exciting thing for me might have been the fact that no one had an injury that would last more than a week or two after spring ball,” Richt said. “Right now the entire team should be healthy beginning in June to go through the entire off-season program. So if we don’t have any setbacks this summer, when we roll into camp it might be the first time since I’ve been at Georgia that we don’t have somebody in the red cross area. So that’s good.”

Cornerback/wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell (hamstring), freshman tailback Keith Marshall (hamstring) and safety Shawn Williams (knee) all missed the spring game with minor injuries, while offensive linemen Zach DeBell (ankle) and Xzavier Ward (knee) and defensive end Sterling Bailey (foot) sat out while recovering from preexisting injuries.

But there were a few tangible conclusions we could make from the 15-practice spring period:

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER(S)

The good news for Georgia is there were several candidates in this area. But for the sheer expanse of improvement made, Justin Scott-Wesley has to be at the top of the list.

The redshirt freshman wide receiver was completely raw as a skill player when he arrived from Camilla as a true freshman last summer. And despite splitting his time with the track team – he’s a multiple state championship sprinter – this 6-foot, 220-pound athlete showed great promise and turned a lot of heads both in the practices and the spring game. Scott-Wesley led the Red team with three catches for 46 yards, including a 21-yarder for a first down on third and long that required him to go up high and haul in a pass over his outside shoulder with senior cornerback Branden Smith on his inside hip in tight coverage. Scott-Wesley competed his way into the playing rotation for this fall.

Honorable mentions: Offensive lineman Kolton Houston, linebacker Ramik Wilson, tailback Ken Malcome and tight end Jay Rome.

POSITION BATTLE RESULTS

Georgia was left with three major voids on the offensive line due to the graduation left tackle Cordy Glenn, center Ben Jones and right tackle Justin Anderson. The most important of these position battles ended up not being one as junior Kenarious Gates (6-foot-5, 328 pounds) grabbed the left tackle job by the throat and never let go.

Meanwhile, Houston (6-5, 291) turned out to be the unexpected winner of the sweepstakes at right tackle. After missing all last season with NCAA “eligibility issues,” Houston was expected to earn playing time at one of the guard positions. But midway through camp, line coach Will Friend decided to give him a look out wide and the former Under Armour All-American from Buford out-performed Watts Dantzler and Austin Long at the position and came out as the starter.

Sophomore David Andrews (6-2, 280) appears to have held onto the center job. But Friend continues to experiment by working larger players in there such as Chris Burnette (6-2, 313) and Dallas Lee (6-4, 303) in the hopes of eventually settling on the five best overall players. Also, 5-star signee John Theus will be thrown into the mix in August.

“There’s no question we made a lot of progress up front,” Richt said. “As the spring went on, we got a little more settled in the top five. . . . We have other guys fighting for spots, and we have freshmen who can come in and fight for a position as well.”

DEEPEST GROUP

Georgia enjoys more quality depth on the defensive line – followed closely by linebackers — than at any other position on the field and it’s for that reason that the Bulldogs have to be in the SEC championship conversation.

Georgia features a pair of 350-pound noseguards in John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers that are the envy of any of the top programs in college football, much less the SEC. Meanwhile, under-appreciated end/tackle Abry Jones is back, Cornelius Washington proved to be a beast in his move to defensive end from outside linebacker and Garrison Smith, who played a lot of quality snaps late last season, was un-blockable at times.

Combine that with an All-American pass rusher in Jarvis Jones at outside linebacker, seasoned veterans Alec Ogletree, Michael Gillard and Christian Robinson at inside linebacker and versatile up-and-comers Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson, and the Bulldogs feature one of the most formidable front sevens in football.

AREA OF CONCERN

It didn’t look like it at the end of last season, but Georgia’s defensive secondary is suddenly the biggest question mark. The Bulldogs already knew they would be without Hornung Award winner Brandon Boykin, who will be selected in the early rounds of this week’s NFL draft. But then All-America free safety Bacarri Rambo and cornerbacks Sanders Commings and Smith ran into off-season trouble and face multiple-game suspensions early in the season. So shaky is the situation that UGA’s coaches made the bold decision to move Mitchell, their most explosive offensive play-maker, from wideout to corner to shore up depth.

Meanwhile, Georgia is relying on a pair of freshman signees in Collin Barber and Marshall Morgan to step in punter and place-kicker, respectively. That’s a challenge in itself but especially when replacing such special teams stalwarts as Drew Butler and Blair Walsh.

QUESTION GOING INTO SUMMER

Soon after news leaked of Rambo’s impending suspension due to a failed drug test, there was rampant speculation that several other players were facing disciplinary action due to similar violations of athletic department policy. Georgia has already lost 10 players to transfer, dismissal or suspension, so the Bulldog Nation will be holding its collective breath in hopes that the team remains intact come September.

Not worried about the secondary. They will be fine. All the shuffling around and “experimenting” on the O-line sounds like business as usual and is cause for concern. We never have any stability there.

Oh well. Let’s just blame it all on Aaron Murray.

I don’t know if the secondary is the biggest “area of concern” chip. It’s true that losing Rambo and Cummings is unfortunate, but we have other very talented back ups that can hold us together while they are out. That’s the benefit of recruting properly. Plus, the front end of our schedule is week and it will be a good time to get these guys some reps. For me, the main “areas of concern” are:

1). Aaron Murray: I’ve read the article Bill King wrote praising him and all the posts surrounding the topic. The bottom line is he needs to learn not to hurt his own team and learn to throw the ball away.
If he can transform into the game manager we need him to be, we have a good chance of doing something special with the schedule we have. If not, we will have a simialr year to last year. No more benefit of the doubt with him, he’s a Junior and we need a higher level of decision making from him.

2). Offensive Line: we’ve been spoon fed this nonsense every spring for the last 5 years. There is no reason for me to beleive that we are going to be any better with the patch work O-line we’ve fielded cosnsistently. I don;t understand why the coaches dont “get it. Theus was highly touted, but hasnt proved squat on the field yet. Again, I hope I am wrong but I do not have high hopes this year. We’ll see.

3). TB’s: For no other reason than Richt plays senority over talent. He believes that you “earn” a chance to play if you have been in the program long eneough. BS! Put the best person on the field. I don;t expect Marshall or Gurley to get that many reps unless we have another “my ankle hurts” season from Crowell. That sounds harsh, and it probably is, but this kid gives us the best chance at 100 yrds per game than anyone Ive seen yet. He’s got those type of skills when he’s healthy.

All in all, I am trying to reign in my hopes for this year. For me, and some of you may disagree, I am reserving judgement until I am proved wrong. Yea, I hope we win every game. We very well could but there are too many “if”s right now for me to even consider any championship talk.

If Aaron Murray is to transform in to the game manager that we need him to be we will have to establish some semblance of a running game. You are putting the cart before the horse pal.

Good point. What do you want to bet that Andrews rarely has to go up against Jenkins and Geathers in practice? We’re too busy “experimenting” and working on the cute stuff for these guys to learn how to man up and block somebody. Then we wonder why the O-line gets its arses kicked by teams like LSU and Michigan State.

You said you wanted him to be a better game manager. He needs a running game to do that. We do not have one against good teams. Without a running game the entire offense is on Murray’s shoulders. He’s too busy trying to make plays and get us down the field to manage the game. He needs a running game and he needs an O-line with some sack.

Fortunately the secondary should be back to strength when we hit the meat of a pretty soft schedule, MO being the only early worry (but their QB will likely be less than 100%). OL has to be the biggest concern as usual and if GDay were any indication, they will have problems if any of the first five get injured. Having good depth at TB should help make up for any shaky line play however. Losing Mitchell as a WR hurts a lot so some WR’s need to step up. Bennett is solid and Conley showed promise but you need more than 3 WR that can play.

“He’s too busy trying to make plays and get us down the field to manage the game. He needs a running game and he needs an O-line with some sack..”

That’s the problem..he’s too busy trying to make plays to manage the game. All I’m saying is it’s ok to throw the ball away, it’s ok to punt sometimes. Murray, unfortunately, has not accepted this yet. I know he is trying to make plays for the team, but he single handidly has cost us points in close games that we should have won because of his decision making. That has nothing to do with the TB’s. However, it does have something to do with the O-line. I will concede that point.

We will have a running game as long as we aren’t running it up the gut. When they start stopping us outside, then we go back up the gut. We have the RBs this year, that can go inside outside. Quit being so negative. People who are negative all the time, are losers. People who say, “we can’t do this or that “are also losers. This is a new year and a new team, what do you base your expert ,negative opinions on? If you say history, then you’re saying things never change. In that case you’re an idiot. Alabama was bad before they got good. Florida was good before they got bad. Be positive or be negative, it’s your choice…

dawgustus – I hope Mitchell gets some offensive time as well. He’s our biggest deep threat guy and you’re right, we can’t afford not to have him off the field. Conley and Bennett should be studs, I’m hoping that Wesley and Marlon Brown have big years. Why did we get away from using FB’s and TE’s in our offense? Bobo is just awful.

Kingdaddy: calling someone an idiot for voicing a different perspective than your own show’s your own intellectual depth, or lack thereof. This is not the “if I think it, and beleive it, it must be true” blog. That’s over on the GA Tech page. These problems that we all have identitifed have been pervasive in our program for the past 5 or so years. They are not new. I, and some others on this page, am not being “negative”. The artticle points out areas of concern..thats what we’re talking about. And who cares about Florida or Alabama? They have nothing to do with what we are talking about.

If we can find a way to beat Missouri in their sec home debut, these suspensions won’t matter. I don’t consider Buffalo or Fla Atlantic as threats. I think the leaner, more athletic OL will be perfect for sweeps, screens and roll-out passes. When you get them used to chasing you outside, you bust a long one up the middle. Hope to see some two tightend sets with one of the tail-backs running behind Lynch at Full-back. We have to run the ball this year to set-up the pass better and take some pressure off of Murray…

Everyone in the SEC starts off with a 0-0 record next fall (including the almighty Crimson Tide)…..and none of the outcomes of the games played during the 2012 season will be determined by any of the games the teams played during the previous 18 months!!! So….what exactly was the logic or purpose of the answer to your post question? Georgia will likely begin the 2012 season as a projected top 5 team in the BCS. So will Bama. So will LSU. South Carolina will not be far behind. Florida will most likely be in the top 20. The SEC will be a much better conference from top to bottom next year. It will not be an easy road to the title for any team, including you Tide.

Recruiting too many baby fat kids for the OL. The OL makes the offense run and I think UGA need to be pursuing more top caliber OL, but with a nobody as the OL Coach, it seems to me that Aub, Fla, Ala, Stanford and USC are signing them all. With the lack of top OL, one would think that the top players would be flocking to UGA but, you have to actually recruit the best to get the best. There is not enough emphasis being placed on recruiting better OL for the offense, but Grantham seems to be doing quite well stocking up the DL and also we can’t seem to recruit better WR. Yea UGA gets one maybe every other year but, a stable of them would be nice. 2013, at least 3 top WR need to be brought in. I know it is early but, they are dissappering off the board very fast. UGA has done a decent job recruiting so far this year but, seems to me that the only meaningful OL they are recrutiing is Tunsil out of Fla. They put all their chips on Avery Young last year and missed out. With such a great need for OL, the top twenty should have been offered and pursued. The recruiting still needs to get better. With the opportunity to bring in at least 33 recruits in 2013, and the lack there of brought in for 2012, the recruits need to be a higher quality than the David Andrews and the Watts Dantzlers. I don’t care if there parent played for UGA or not, IF they are not good, don’t recruit them. The time is out for just giving out schollys just to have a body on the sideline. If they can’t produce cutem’ loose. It’s time for CMR to step up and get this team to the NC level and that also goes for the coaches as well. Talk is cheap and its been since 1980 and I am tired of saying maybe next year. In order to be Champions, you have to recruit, coach and play like champions.

No answers for the O.L. in spring. Same old song and dance for Richt and his program. UGA has never under RIcht had a dominating O.L. The guy just doesn’t get it. He runs off Benedict who was the best O.L UGA has signed under Richt. Even with his surgically repaired knee, he would be better than any O.L UGA has on campus. If you don’t believe me, why is he starting for Va.Tech.? Yet Richt supports his idiot S&C old man, and runs off such talent. That is why UGA is in such terrible shape every year on the O.L. Richt has no clue how to have a power running game, he actually hates it. He never had a power running game at Fl.st, he was all sissy ass ACC football. And now he hires the worst possible candidate for the O.L coach, and what do you have? The worst O.L in the SEC east. Friend is another terrible hire by the wonderful Richt. The only reaason he hired this clown was because he was friends of Bobo. OOPS, talk about another terrible hire. My GOD, when you have one of the worst O.C. in the conference, and probably the worst O.L coach, what do you expect to happen? Friend which is a good name for him, because he wouldn’t have the job if it weren’t for his friend Bobo, has proven after 2 years that he is the worst recruiter of O.L. in the SEC. UGA got none of the top 3 O.L in the state last year. They all went to competitive SEC schools. S.C, LSU,and Bama. That is totally unacceptable, but i forgot Richt doesn’t hold any of his coaches responsible for their coaching ability or recruiting ability. Then this wonderful Friend, loses a big UGA lean to Florida last weekend in Garcia, and he already lost one of the top O.L. in Outlaw to the Gators. Add to that, UGA isn’t leading for any of the other top O.L’s in state, and you have a total disaster this fall and the next couple of years.to come. It is so embarrassing to watch LSU and Bama with their power running games, and then you have to compare that to what UGA puts on the field. When will this nightmare ever end???????

RE: OL

Does anyone really think Bean anderson can’t be replaced?

He won’t get drafted

God bless him for trying but he is the reason we hardly ever ran a toss sweep to his side. No lateral movement. Just big

I find it difficult to believe that one of the guys on the team now can’t do better.

Jones is replacable but his leadership and understanding of the line set to call is hard to replace.

Glenn was a stud. We have good players but none at his level.

There will eventually be more depth but the young pups have to learn.

Probably going to be 5 games in before we really know what we have

I agree with Banker dawg. This season is all about our quarterback and the offensive line. I just know in a big time game Aron Murray will crash. The kid is good but he lack the instict talent that makes players like Manning brothers. When he is pressured he start to panic. You will see when we play Alabama or LSU in the SEC championship game. About the o line every year Mark and the guys talk about how big and good these guys are. But the truth is the o line has not dominated a defensive line yet. Yes we looked good against Auburn last year, but that was not a team with any defense. If the line blocks then it won’t matter who is running behind it.

“This is a new year and a new team, what do you base your expert ,negative opinions on?”
**********************************************
Well, kingdaddy, first and foremost, we still have the same two guys (Richt/Bobo) running the offense. If you are expecting big changes in the offense this season, like less predictability in the 2nd half, or a serious running game, just remember, a leopard can’t change its spots. I mean, If Richt didn’t tweek his offensive philosophy last season, while supposedly on a hot seat, why would he do it now, with the new contract in hand?

That’s not negativity – that’s living in “Realville.”

Chris
If(when) we get by Missouri, our OL should be in game shape and playing as a team. By the time we get to the other Columbia, Coach Bobo should have a good feel for his offense. If the OL isn’t up to par, there are lots of plays that take the pressure off of a line if Bobo will just use his brain. Even in pro football there is such a thing as a sophomore jinx. Lots of QBs go through this. Nobody knows for sure, but the so called experts seem to think A. Murray will have a monster year this year. Please give him the chance he deserves this year before you rip his arms and legs off. This QB controversy stuff is for the birds. If Murray can’t handle it this year, UGA is blessed with other options. Murray deserves the chance to succede this year, before you kick him to the curb…

A more athletic offensive line will produce better results than just plugging huge guys in there and hoping they block. I expect to see more toss sweeps and short screen passes this season as a result.

Of all of our worries, Grantham, I’m not worried about.

UGA Insider(???) keeps telling us that we are going to be a power running team that plays strong defense.

Anybody buying that?

OL depth is the biggest question mark. If you are a power running team, not only do your starters have to be powerful, you must have depth to sustain long drives.

Don’t know if I am buying that one

Good morning Joey
You have no idea how mad I got last year watching Carlton Thomas run up the gut on 1&2 down, only to then watch Murray throw a bomb for an int. or inc. I went to the big Bulldog parties and son, I can tell you, a lot of people were and still are P.Od. Alright, this is important, our running back corp was in shatters and an OL that needed to go on a diet and get in better shape. You can’t win consistantly without a running game and defense. A running game this year will keep Murray from trying to win the game by himself. All the pieces of this puzzle can come togeather this year. Coach Bobo is the KEY. During the G-day game, Bobo ran a lot of outside runs, screens and half-back passes, and he got the tightends involved. I won’t giveup until we start losing the same way we lost last year…

Not taking up for any quarterback anywhere but it sure would make for a clearer picture of the Q.B.’s ability if we didn’t classify a ball that hit the reciever in the numbers, bounced off his facemask, went l0 feet into the air and then into a D.B.’s hands only to be classified as an interception. In basketball the player gets credit for a shot block without even knowing if the ball was going in the basket. At least one half of all so called interceptions are reflections that should be charged to the receiver as a mishandled pass catch.

I agree (9:58) point by point. I am hopeful, as always, for a big season, but that’s a scary statement right there – “Coach Bobo is the KEY.”

It just seems in our biggest games, Bobo finds ways to give up momentum to the opponent. Granted, Murray gave up many turnovers (and points) in those big games, but Bobo had already started his 3-and-out madness. If he game-planned and called plays every game as he did in the SC and AU games,I would shut up. But too often, when good DCs make adjustments, he can’t respond.

But Bobo is a DGD, and I appreciate his contributions to UGA all these years.

Print out and hang on to all of these spring coverage write-ups. It will be interesting to see how accurate they are by mid season of 2012. Usually the early hype is just that – hype. Remember all the accolades that Crowell got last year, pre and early season. But later in the season many Dog fans wanted to run him out of Athens and basically branded him a wuss and a quiter. That may just be true, but since he was a true freshman let’s give him another season and see if he toughens up. Look forward to Fall. Go Dogs!

Last year certainly left much to be desired in special teams, Gary, no doubt. If it’s any consolation, Marshall Morgan looks to be the real deal. I got Dec. 1st circled on my calendar for another smackdown in atlanta! Mettenberger is going to flat out outplay Murray in ever statline.
yall need to quit hyping up that team so much before the season when they havent played well or won a sec championship since ‘05.
Im no fan of Uga but theyre a historically good team. Id really like to see them in a bcs bowl in the next two years but it doesnt look like that’s going to happen.
In my opinion, yall just need a clean sweep of that entire offensive coaching staff and get richt out of there! That man shows no discipline!
Maybe stealing Todd Monken (OC at Ok. St), Mark Helfrich (OC at Oregon), or Dabo Swinney (@ Clemson) by offering at OC or Head coach would bring some fire power to that offense, look at how their schools are doing now!
Richt is too soft of a coach, he thinks hes invincible cause the people love him.
Yeah he wins games, but not the ones that matter. Boise St., S. Car., LSU, Michigan St. just last year, and that was a fluff schedule they had.
In the end none of this really matters, for uga will not win a Nat’l Championship for a long time.
As long as LSU, Bama, Arky, Auburn, and the newly rising powerhouse Tx aTm are in the SEC West, no team in the east stands a chance!
LSU’s D-Line and Secondary is going to be a nightmare for them this year!
Our stable of RB’s is again going to run the ball down their throats!
Mettenberger is going to perform an Air Show in the dome throwing all over that uga secondary!
What looks like a good season next year for yall….is not.
Whether it’s LSU, Bama, or Arky in the dome with yall, youre $h1t out of luck!!

His blog handle is gutless, showing no allegiance to any school because that would actually mean standing up for something and risking criticism when things don’t go well.

Most all of the trolls on the UGA threads are Techies even the ones who try to identify with another team are usually pimple faced, black horned rimmed glasses wearing, high water pants styling Tech fans.

Why else would they be on here? Of course a few of them could be ignorant Bama fans but I digress. 95% are Tech fans with no life, no money and no girlfriend

ARdawg, good way of looking at it. It’s easy to tell a legitimate fan of another team: Big Crimson, The Bear, Beast of the East, etc. from a troll who’s just looking to get a rise out of people.

Kingdaddy – define “troll” for the group. Is it someone from another fan base that comes on this blog to attack GA and it’s fans? Or is it a GA fan that tries to give an honest assesment of what he expects out of this years team and coaching staff. Again, this article was about “areas of concern”. You make yourself irrelevant by attacking other dawg fans for issuing an opposing position. You obvioulsy need to study the game more and take a class in critical thinking. You points are weak and your analysis is that of a pre-teen.

Those are some good guys and there are also some Tech fans who occasionally grace the UGA threads and contribute some good discussion. There use to be quite a few of those along with a few fans from other teams but, they quit coming because of the trolls.

BankerDawg
A troll is anyone who posts hate and vitriol hoping for a negative reaction. Anyone, whether they are a fan or not. Many fans disagree with each other. Disagreeing isn’t trollish. Disliking UGA and it’s fans isn’t trollish. Posting just for negative reaction is. This use to be a fun blog, the idiots, arse holes and trolls like country boy has taken it’s toll

@ B’dawg: great post and interesting point. What you just described is our team during the Van Gorder days in 2002. Let me point out some other nuances that made that team successful and compare them to this year:

1). Defense 2002: Nasty – Greg Blue, Thomas Davis, David Pollack, Sean Jones, Robert Geathers etc. 2012 – Nasty: Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, Bacarri Rambo, Branden Smith, Sanders Cummings, Ray Drew, Kwame Geathers, John Jenkins, Abry Jones, Christina Robinson etc

* You said if we score 24 points a game that we should win all our games. This may be true based on the defense that we are firlding this year. We have that type of talent again and if any Dawg fan doesnt think that Grantham isnt the best things to happen to our program in 10 years then I think this year will change your mind. I have high hopes for this team based on the Defensive side of the ball.

2). Offense: 2002: productive and efficient: David Greene, Freddie Gibson, Billy Bennett, Reggie Brown, Terrence Edwards, Gordon-Ely Kelso, Max Gean -Gilles, Daniel Inman, Quentin Moses, Ben Watson, Musa Smith etc. 2012: potentially explosive/potentially inefficient:

* I am not going to list the 2012 players, we all know them. If you look at the offense in 2002 compared to 2012, I think we have more talent now. The problem is all in the trenches. We haven;t had a great O-line since 2002 and I cannot figure out why. Some would say injury and some would say matriculation. They may all be right. For me, those are excuses. “If”, and its a big “if”, our Oline can come together, and we get 100 yrds a game or more from Crowell, Marshall, Gurley, Malcome or whoever, I think we have the recipe for a 2002 type season and maybe, just maybe, with the some luck and help from above, a shot at the MNC.

*That last line was for KingDaddy, DawginLex, and all the other “pie in the sky” fans.

BankerDawg, good point. One of the issues I have with recruiting nowadays is that the coaches seem too concerned with flash and finesse and not focused enough on quality depth in the trenches, where the game is won. CTG has addressed that issue on the defensive side of the ball, but the O-line leaves much to be desired. I’m hopeful that Coach Friend will get it going this year with a more athletic group of guys. I think Georgia is a solid offensive line away from being a really good team.

Mee too Dawg Haus, its as simple as that. We like to kick Bobo around, and rightfully so. But we seem to forget that we have never been a “Big 12″ (or whatever they are called now) type team. Defense, Oline, and running the ball win games in the SEC. Saban, as much as I hate to admit it, understands this. AJ McCarron is no better than AM, but he has a strong supporting cast and a solid O line to protect him. Thats the only missing ingredient that I see. That, and Murray needs to mature more. I dont expect him to win games for us with his arm but I do expect him not to lose any by turning the ball over and making dumb mistakes.

Preaching to the choir I know but, I don’t consider McCarron as good as AM. It’s easy for a QB to look good with a solid Oline, solid running game and receivers that catch the ball. Last year McCarron had it, Murray didn’t. If the Oline jells this year. I expect Murray will impress quite a few. He is much better than appeared last year

We had the biggest tonnage of any offensive line anywhere in the country last year and they couldn’t block a biscuit. It’s tough to look good as a QB when you are running for your life

Tony – While Blair Walsh was outstanding for 2+ seasons he was a liability last year. The incoming freshman kicker may well be better than Blair was last year. I seriously doubt he can be worse. If he is, we are in deep trouble when it comes to place kicking and we will have wasted a scholarship.

ARdawg – As for AM, I hope you are right when you say he is much better than he appeared to be last season. O/W, we have trouble, real trouble, in River City because it is clear that CMR is not going to give anyone else a shot at playing QB regardless of how AM does.

Dawg Tired, I hear you on Walsh. I hated seeing him self-destruct last season, especially given how great he was from 2008-10. If I’m not mistaken, he leaves UGA as the SEC’s leading scorer. Just shows you how good he was before 2011.

I’ve heard nothing but positive reports on Marshall Morgan, the incoming kicker. He apparently averaged hitting the end zone on kickoffs in high school and is supposed to be extremely accurate with field goals. Take it for what it’s worth, but I think we have ourselves a decent kicker coming in. Time will tell, I suppose.

I hope you guys are right. Special teams was terrible last year – FG’s, kicks ,and coverage. We generally have done a good job recruiting here and usually these guys come in an make an immediate positive impact. I guess that is why im not too worried. I am worried, however, about our special teams coverage. Hoepfully Richt has settled in his mind that walk ons and 3rd string guys dont fair as well as your 4 and 5 star guys vs other 4 and 5 star guys.

The AM commentary is a fair assessment. You guys talked me in to it, I’ll give him a chance to prove me wrong. I’m not one who thinks Mason or Lemay would do a better job for us right now. It’s Murray’s job to lose, and yes I do believe that he should lose his job if he does not show drastic improvement. Thats how life works right? At some point you’ve got to prove why we “hired” ya.

Good discussion today no hate just opinion is refreshing. I do wish that Chip and Michael and other blog leaders would ban the trollers and others that are just immature bloggers that contribute nothing.
I think the rule change concerning kickers kicking 5 yards closer on kick offs and Marshall Morgan already putting some of his kicks into the end zone will be a VERY positive thing for our not so good special teams play. A LOT MORE kick will never be run out since the opposing team will start on the 25 if they don’t run it out.

It’s certainly refreshing to have conversations like these, 7576DAWG. Good point on the rules change on kickoffs. I forgot about that.
I found a Marshall Morgan highlight film on Youtube if anyone’s interested. He apparently did the punting in high school, as well. If he can kick like that at UGA, we’re in good shape.

“What I’m sick and tired of is people b!tchin and moaning about CMR but have no solutions. Why dont you tell us who is available right now that will come in and win the SEC or national championship in their first year.

Why not give it to Todd Grantham? and Why should the Head Coach be expected to produce a SEC or National Championship? Mark Richt certainly won’t this year.

Or a better idea: rather than give MR a new contract, why not pay him a $100,000 base salary, and then pay him a $400,000 bonus per win (cupcake opponents don’t count). Maybe then he would be more interested in winning than playing his favorites.

Come on, homies! Take this from a lifetime Dawg fan who spent the past half century in the shadows of the arches. Are you Richt groupies confusing the willingness to arrest and/or suspend our law breaking players for team discipline? No, that is strictness. That is the willingness to play nanny to a bunch of unruly brats. A well disciplined team is hallmarked by self-discipline. No need for strictness when you have discipline. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Also, I don’t give a rats tuckus about the strictness of other teams OR their legal issues. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO DEFEAT A RANKED TEAM???? When we get a new head coach that understands the difference between strictness and discipline, that’s when!
